Re: The Witcher 3 Developer Wishes Free DLC Was The Industry Standard

baconcow

@darkswabber If you read the article on the official website, larger DLC/expansions are not specifically mentioned, as in this PushSquare article. It all comes down to wording. In my view, their free DLC is just unfinished content that could have easily been part of the main game (time permitting and regardless of the huge amount of content already included). Expansion packs are generally higher amounts of DLC content. If they want to be clear, they should state, "small, cut content-sized DLC should be free" (and I definitely agree with them). I will definitely buy their larger expansion DLC. I know I am just splitting hairs, but it is an small, but important, distinction that can be flipped in or out of their favour.

Re: Does Dimming the PS4 Controller's Light Bar Increase Its Battery Life?

baconcow

I have both controllers set on DIM. When playing Child of Light, one is blue and the other is red. The red controller hardly looks dim at all. Even the blue really only seems about 50% of the original setting. I was expecting a nice dim setting that would provide just enough light to see the colour, without being a flashlight. The dim setting is pretty poor at doing just that. My gaming environment is pretty dark, at night, and I have a plasma TV with a fairly reflective glass screen (it is a Panasonic ST-60, so there is a small amount of anti-reflective on it), so even dim reflects in the TV considerably.

It is a start, but Sony doesn't really know what dim means.

Re: There's a Downside to PS4 Racer DriveClub's Outrageous Visuals

@get2sammyb While I do not wish this game does poorly, I do wish it were 60 fps. Being very sensitive to frame rate changes and the difference between locked 30/60/120 fps, in many genres (mainly shooters, racing games, and fighters), I always hope for the best. I was just looking forward to a game that would surpass the experience of Forza 4 for me, as nothing else yet has.

Re: There's a Downside to PS4 Racer DriveClub's Outrageous Visuals

baconcow

Dealbreaker for me. 60 fps is necessary in a racing game, arcade or realistic. PG4 was 30 fps and it was quite noticeable and detracted from the experience. Forza Motorsport 4 ran at a locked 60 fps and it still is the best racing game on the market.

@Carl-G. I am not a hater, and I definitely own a PS4. As mentioned, I won't touch this game at sub 60 fps. 1080p and 60 fps for big PS4 titles is a necessary requirement for me. Otherwise, I'll plug my last gen console in and play a racing game at game at 60 fps.

Re: PS4's Power Advantage Over Xbox One Is Irrelevant, Says Pachter

baconcow

He is essentially saying 720p and 1080p have no differences. On my 55" plasma, they are night and day different. If I wanted 720p, I'd just stick with my PS3/Xbox 360. Power didn't make the choice, I wanted Sony games more. However, the disadvantage the Xbox One has won't have me buying it as a tertiary console anytime soon. He is a poor analyst. If the Xbox One had far better performance than the PS4, it would have sold better. Once my friends (who own Xbox 360) heard it was the weaker console, they all decided they would get a PS4 for Destiny, instead of an Xbox One.

Re: PS4 Firmware Update 1.70 Will Add New Sharing Options and HDCP Support

baconcow

The PS4 OS is still missing many things, some of which that the PS3 had. UI customization (even just the colours), 3D Blu-ray capability (how is this not already implemented?), folders (the Vita has this), capability to play custom music soundtracks during games (Xbox 360 had this, not sure if the PS3 did), etc.. While I feel the OS is clean, it is a step back from the PS3 one in several areas. The hope is that they are adding things and will hopefully improve it over time. But, I still wonder what they were thinking when they decided to NOT give their hardware 3D Blu-ray capability, something I can do on the 2007 PS3 hardware that I own.

Re: This Massive Free Update for Terraria on PS3 and Vita May as Well be DLC

baconcow

@AG_Awesome Just google some gameplay videos on YouTube. It is an action game where you explore the surface and underground of a randomly-generated world. You can build, combat, and more. Has online support. I put over 100 hours in the PC version and around 30, so far, in the PS Vita version. The game is on quite the epic scale, for an indie. Some compare it to a 2D Minecraft with much better combat.

Re: Looks Like Sony's Getting Ready to Release the PS4 in China

baconcow

Saying Chinese cannot afford generation 8 consoles is a poorly informed observation. I have been to China and know several Chinese and they are not considered middle or high income people in their countries. They do, however, seem to be able to afford luxuries like Apple products and other year or two year-old technology. While the majorities will not be able to afford a PS4, there, it doesn't take a majority of a 1.35 billion population to generate tons of sales. With limited ease and proper marketing, in key locations including China, the sales numbers for a console like the PS4 could potentially push Sony to unreachable total numbers, this generation. I do believe, however, the PS Vita suits the Chinese on-the-go lifestyle, more.

Re: Review: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f (PlayStation Vita)

baconcow

@divinelite F2nd is announced for North America (and possibly Europe), so we will all be fine when that releases.

I am liking the game a lot, so far. I enjoy it more than Ouendan because it is slightly easier for me. I suck at rhythm games with a stylus. I do not, however, like it as much as Band Bros. DX. I am finding, however, there is a slight slowdown at times that causes my timing to be off. Would be better with note inputs at 60 fps, instead of what seems to be 30 fps.

Re: Review: Fez (PlayStation 4)

baconcow

Picked this up on the PS Vita. Loving it, so far. While the map isn't ideal, I came to understand it fairly quickly and use it a lot to get around. It would be nice if it was made a little more like the 3D map in the Metroid Prime series, that shows a rough shape of the area and approximate location of the doors.

While there is some minor slowdown, mainly during the spinning segment during level loading, it is minor and rarely impacts gameplay.

Regarding graphics, this game has a very clean style and none of the screenshots do the game justice. Seeing the game in full motion is quite a site, and puts a lot of more modern-styled games to shame. I put this up there near to Spelunky and Hotline Miami as one of the more original indie games available.

Re: April PlayStation Plus Content Reveal Incoming This Week

baconcow

@thedevilsjester Yeah, I get the licensing thing. But, I was meaning it in the sense that, my physical game will still work in 100 years, as long as my system does. Another thing about digital that I don't like is the lack of being able to share the game with my gf. I play Tearaway and then give her it to play, also. Makes me cheap, I guess, but then again I buy tons of games so I don't see the issue. I will likely get PS+ if/when I buy a PS4, as it will likely be required to play online (no?). Looking forward to Destiny.

// Boring rant

Problem with PS Plus, apart from the discounts for indie games (that in no way will add up to $50 a year, for me), I already have all the games I want that they put up. That, and the horrible cost for the Vita's memory cards and my love of physical media, PS Plus is a tempting but necessary thing, for me, at best. I am one to buy the games I really want as they release or shortly after. I also want to avoid having all digital content. If you keep everything on your PC, as opposed to buying more memory cards (I already have a near filled 32 GB and an older now-empty 16 GB and I own one (non-PSN) game digital (Project Diva). PSP and PSone games are quite big and filled up my cards alone. I couldn't imagine owning 100GB+ of rentals just to have to move them around all the time. It is enough of a nuisance to switch games by PC. Also, I hate not owning things, and PS Plus is only a rental service. Technically, Steam and PSN are only license subscriptions, in the end. None of it is ideal and nothing replaces owning a case and cart.

// end Boring rant

Re: Review: inFAMOUS: Second Son (PlayStation 4)

@get2sammyb Best part of the PS4, imo. I've had the Vita since near launch and I am looking forward to my continuing tradition of being able to lay down on my bed and play a game. I have full intentions of having my WiFi router 5 feet away, if necessary.

Re: Review: inFAMOUS: Second Son (PlayStation 4)

@KAPADO An 8/10 is okay when comparing the game to all of the thousands of other yearly released games. This is a big market. For people who rely on ratings to help choose their games, why buy one with an 81% Metacritic average when you can buy 10 others with an 89-93% average. It isn't the number that is mathematically bad. It is the amount of higher rating games that makes the perception of this bad.

Also, in my experience, most games with 75% Metacritic average or lower tend to be kinda poor. A game gets an 8/10 and has a glowing review then another gets a 7/10 and has a review that talks about all of its poor points. If gaming had a higher number of ratings, like IMDb, it may be a more consistent (and likely, lower) result.

In the end of a day, 8+ seems to be what's good these days, for the most part. Anything rated 7 or lower tends to be okay or poor. Niche games (like Etrian Odyssey) can end up being 7's and work well for the specific buyer as they are rated lower for being a niche product (something less people has interest in or like). Games series like Call of Duty GTA V tend to have suspiciously-bloated scores which doesn't help either. It makes buyers skeptical.

I honestly wouldn't mind a world without numerical ratings. The problem is, there are not many reviewers with consistency and quality like PushSquare (look at a review by xxx online reviewer, read their glowing review and then their 7 score). Then read a review by the same reviewer about a almost good, but poor game also receive a 7. Then read their GTA V review that states several issues but receives a 10. Lot's of inconsistencies. The content of the review is the most important part, but people don't have the time or interest to read everything.

@get2sammyb I actually bought my PS3 in October of 2013. I have many games on it that are unplayed. I bought it, partially, to replace my decade-old blu-ray player and then ended up buying many games for it. I am not as excited about Arkham Knight after Origins. The Order looks descent. I would pick up Uncharted. Uncharted 2 has been the best PS3 game I have played, this far. Destiny looks great, and I am not even a big FPS fan. I am hoping for a PS4 bundle with a must-have game, possibly Destiny. My first Xbox 360 game (in 2008) was Halo 3, and that game looks to bring back the coop fun I remember from years ago.
