US retailer GameStop – whose entire flagging business model is built around customers buying physical games – took a swipe at customers during the PSN outage this weekend, as it mocked players for overwhelmingly purchasing digital games.
“Bet y’all want physical games now,” it said in response to the downtime, which lasted for almost an entire day. The message, posted on X (or Twitter), went viral with over 55k likes.
Of course, contrary to common misconception, digitally downloaded games can be played on the PS5 and PS4 even when your consoles are completely offline.
However, those purchases can sometimes get locked out if you’re not playing on your primary account, as the system is not able to identify you own them. It’s a flaw that admittedly doesn’t exist with physical games.
While physical games remain an option on PS5 – and are expected to be available for the PS6 as well – there’s no question that consumers have dramatically transitioned to purchasing digital downloads, with approximately 70% of Sony’s software sales coming through the PS Store.
As a result, GameStop’s business has been on the decline for quite some time, with a raft of stores shut down in the US earlier this year.
While the post from the company is cute and achieved its intended effect, buying physical wouldn’t have necessarily helped gamers take their titles online faster during the outage – and, honestly, there are better retailers to purchase boxed software from anyway.

Physical hasn't felt worth it ever since consoles starting copying disks to their hard drives.
Or you know people might decide to just do something else while its down
@SintasSays apart from being able to get it cheaper at release and for most people it being quicker to install from disc than download. Two significant advantages.
Even as someone who has physical games, not being being able to play Gran Turismo just meant I played another game that I had digitally. Albeit one installed from disc with the disc check disabled due to it being on Plus.
Some physical media couldn't play in a console, but made for excellent freesbees in gaming's newly dubbed 'DARK AGES' that seemed to last forever, according to very reliable commenters such as 'Zachiboi' and 'New_User856'
Im getting every thing physical even when its not available at the start. I rather wait if i even get it all.
Ironic given that most peoples Games did actually Stop
To be fair I only buy physical and those copies aren't coming from GameStop. All they did was remind me why I stopped buying from them, offering gamers peanuts for their secondhand copies never inspired me to shop there.
Nothing wrong with a bit of a fun tweet.
Makes a change from the usual crap that’s on there
So defensive. Felt threatened?
It was a good reminder, for sure.
@SintasSays I still buy them because
A) I enjoying having a curated collection on my shelf
And
B) I'm frequently selling games I don't wish to keep on to cex but with digital I only buy much cheaper titles because I don't want to gamble on something I might not like and regret it.
It is strange, I can't lie. When I was younger the feeling of going to a game shop to buy a new release, or being on the queue for a midnight release hit so different and was so exciting. But then you could go straight home, throw it in the console and start playing. Nowadays, if you have to install it to the console anyway then for me I might as well buy it on the store before I go to bed or before I go to work so that when I have the time to play I can do it straight away. It's just more convenient. It is sad though and I'm glad physical is still there for the collectors.
@Lowdefal cheaper, yes. Install faster... not really.. especially when you can pre load digital.
What's really funny, game stop is the main reason I moved away from physical
So much wrong with this statement.
It isn't the year 2000, all games require installs and most have patches that need downloading. You rarely if ever get a full game on disc.
Smart delivery on Xbox has meant that you often get a different version on the disc to the console you own and Switch carts are often only part of the game.
Plus, during that whole 24 hours I was able to play my digital games no problem - including from PS+, I just couldn't play anything MP.
A disc would have made absolutely no difference.
Nah physical is not worth, too much a hassle for one day in a long time of convenience
Great way to alienate yourself just a bit more from your audience, maybe try advertising a sale next time.
I’m just ready for GameStop to go away completely. If I ever desire physical I just go to Walmart anyway.
@Cutmastavictory If I'm downloading a 90gb game versus installing it, yes it's going to take longer. And games can get delivered early.
Also preload is for people whop buy games without waiting to see how badly they were designed or how bad they run and sensible people don't preorder digital games in advance.
Curiously with current average internet speed it is faster to download and install than install from disk in most cases
Just a random fact
As a kid I lived in the uk version Game
Physical's on its way out which is a shame for those with plenty shelf space.
Got Trails Through Daybreak 2 a week early, can't get that by going digital 😅. Seriously though it's times like this I'm glad my collection is mostly physical, the only time I'm buying a game digitally if it's a game I'm not 100% certain on and it's in a sale.
Strange take...and I like both physical and digital. First; I was playing many of my games already in library....and for example for years I keep all my franchise mode teams in sports games offline so they are playable regardless.
But these days and for quite some time even if you have a disc...if the game is not already installed or updated will it be able to do so during a PSN outage?
Oh, GameStop. I managed one about 20 years ago, and they weren't great to work for, but we had standards. I walk into one now and the place is always frumpy-looking. Shelves disorganized, little doodad boxes all dusty, staff just totally unfriendly. If I buy anything locally, it's at the mom and pop store or BestBuy. Usually it's Amazon or eBay though.
I did randomly pop into my favorite game store last night to find a copy of Onimusha on PS4 for $25. That's gotten very expensive on the secondhand market.
@Lowdefal maybe you're purposefully missing the point of my retort. No the methods aren't equal. But understand, you're speaking with an adult. I can download a video game over night, while I run errands, while at work, etc
Especially with the app. I can do adult things, so it's not a big deal. Maybe to a child with low patience it's a deal breaker, not referring to you. Just saying. You're over selling that aspect.
Mocking and bullying your audience is always a winning strategy...
And theyre right
That joke doesn't really work. I'm pretty sure already downloaded SP games mostly work without online, and MP physical games still are essentially useless without online. Not to mention physical games usually need tons of patches etc.
Gamestop is right.i would never buy a all digital and not have a disc.word up son
Not even considering that some discs are merely just a validity key to unlock (full download still required).
While others may still require a patch / update right out of the ‘box’.
I haven’t tried.
The main benefit of physical to me is that I’m not needlessly throwing away good money on more expensive and untradeable digital games. However, I’m in the U.K, where I can get a vast majority of the value back from CEX. I understand GameStop are a US retailer, and I’ve been told many times that they don’t give good value back. Perhaps if they did adverts like this wouldn’t be needed and people would simply want to buy from them.
@rvk5150 It won't be able to update, obviously. But, if it's already installed it will be updated and fine.
If you delete it and install from the disc again then it won't be updated and your saves will not be compatible. You have to start over. But, it will work. A digital copy needs periodic verification and will stop working when it can't.
Unless, of course, if a firmware update changes that. Naturally, you can't delete it either because if you can't redownload it it will be lost forever.
I have a digital PS5 and I literally told my friends the same thing. LOL.
I would rather stop gaming than give GameStop money.
Love how all the comments are either rattled by game stop or are doing a complete 180 and only wanting digital media.
Like... Pick a lane, guys.
@SintasSays And cost. And ability to resell. And actually owning a game instead of indefinitely renting it.
But sure, totally not worth it.
@medic_alert Most ps4/ps5 discs contain the whole playable game, unlike MS with that annoying smart delivery. (Most Switch games also have the whole game on cart, btw. Microsoft is about the only one that doesn’t these days) It’s only a few outliers on PS that don’t include the full game on-disc. There may be some patches at launch with bug fixes, but only about ten or so games on disc require downloads to be playable. And those are from such wonderful publishers like EA and Ubisoft, paragons of virtue…
GameStop... really?
I went digital because every CEX shop ive been in smelled like a pile of old ladies coats and was always frequented by the red or green haired black hoodie brigade, often in need of a personal hygiene refresher training course, same for the staff 🤣
Why? You could still play all your digital games that were installed on your PS5. Hasn't affected me one bit.
Only thing that affected me was that you couldn't play on your portal.
Game stores that troll people over physical games still makes no difference when you those people play 'Live' games 🤭 making their trolling null and void, and as other people who made a point, you could still play games without licence validation if your PS5 or PS4 is your primary console.
@Jrs1 Yes they do!! The CEX in Southport smells exactly like BO and Cigarettes 🤢
@dskatter cost only really applies to new games.
Anything that is a year or more old tends to be cheaper digital but the ability to resell is a big win for physical particularly if you game on a budget.
I would like to agree with you about ownership too but despite owning a physical piece of plastic and case, the reality is you rarely own anything of value when detached from PSN.
Games released on disc are often incomplete, are usually the worst version of the game without patches that are dropped day 1. Sony often add modes and options down the line and dlc is very often a download code even in so called 'complete' or 'definitive' editions.
So what do you really own? A broken, incomplete game?
For the record i think it is a rubbish situation and I am certainly not happy about it.
@dskatter this is a PushSquare comment section, not Twitter. I promise the snark is unnecessary
@ParboldCoder It's the Wetherspoon's of gaming shops (well probably the only chain in UK once Game is gone)
@dskatter how many 1st party Sony games have the complete game on disc?
Pretty much none of them unless they are re-releases. Sony almost always adds photo modes and other additional modes and since the PS5 they have also gone on to add performance options like the 40fps mode in R&C.
And this doesn't take into account things like DLC and season passes which don't come on disc even in complete editions - examples like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Cyberpunk and many many more.
As for Switch big third party games usually have a download but then there are things like Nintendo Switch Sports which had modes added later, Mario Kart 8 has now got a tonne of tracks not on the cart, Nintendo have gone down this route of adding modes later as well.
So there are a tonne of examples of games where without connection to the Internet you have nowhere near a full game on the disc/cart.
Edit, sorry for the duplication of info in the posts, didn't realise I was replying to the same person.
@ParboldCoder @Jrs1 Charity shops smell like florists compared to CEX.
I'm a physical devotee, and even I think that's a jerk move. Sure, comment on it, but something like, "Hey, come on in and get a game you'd like to play while the network's down," or "Come see why other players have stuck with physical games." Whatever the cause of the outage, you have to know that the multinational corporation will fix it as quickly as possible and won't let it become a common occurrence, so maybe "Not so smart now, are ya?" isn't a wise choice in trying to expand your customer base.
@Medic_alert Now you’re just moving the goalposts. 99.9% of all PS4/PS5 game discs have the fully functional game on-disc. Whether it has optional downloads is completely irrelevant, as are later feature additions.
@SintasSays I included the snark free of charge.
@Lowdefal It might be cheaper but by such a small amount. If it's £15 that's not even enough to order a pizza. For something you're going to be playing for weeks, months maybe, and can come back to for the rest of your life, the price of a footlong Subway meal deal doesn't seem like much.
But what you do get is never having to swap discs, you can't lose or damage the disc (e.g. once my dog knocked over my Xbox and made my Mass Effect 2 disc unplayable), you don't have to take the discs with you if you move house or go to someone else's house with a PS5. You usually get to play the game the second it's released rather than waiting for it to be delivered and then having to install it. And is it that much quicker to install? It took absolutely ages to install FFVII Remake and Horizon Forbidden West, and I had to stick around to swap discs during installation too. My internet isn't that fast but it doesn't take long to download most games - not to mention you can start the installation from your phone when you're out and get back and it's just waiting for you.
A few years ago I used to side with physical copies but there's basically no real practical advantage other than saving a small amount of money that you'd happily spend on some trivial thing without thinking.
@dskatter I'm not moving the goalposts at all.
You don't have a complete game on the disc, that is a fact.
If you are OK with it, that's fine I can understand the preference to at least have the base game available to you in some form - it just isn't the full game and the amount of that game you have is very much a case by case basis.
Physical games are digital games in 2024.
I just purchased a key for KCD2 on my PC. Discs are no different to that key. A disc is not a fully functioning game, it's just a licence that allows one to download it from a server.
There might be niche circumstances where a digital key can't be verified when starting the game due to a network failure, but a disc will work.
However, for 99% of the time discs are as utterly worthless without having access to the game content stored on the servers, as the digital copy is.
You get the full game on the disc in almost all cases. Sure a pre-patched version, but a playable version nonetheless.
With digital, servers go out (like out permanently I mean), you can play nothing. With physical, you get at least an "early" version of the game. Which would you prefer? Something or... nothing? The choice seems so simple to me. Resell value, tradeable w/ friends, often cheaper depending on when you buy.
But yes, your copy of Black Ops 6 is a glorified drink coaster. Also worth mentioning some limited run companies are releasing versions of games with all patches and DLC on disc.
@UnlimitedSevens I wouldn't pay £70 for the garbage on the disc though. Even if it meets some extremely charitable definition of "playable".
@Cornpop76
I mean with extreme cases like Cyberpunk 2077, garbage is right. But like in the good old PS1 and PS2 days, we used to play around the glitches and usually wasn't that big a deal. You got what you got on the disc.
The completely unplayable games like Cyberpunk are actually pretty few and far between. You are getting a rougher version - sometimes a little rougher, sometimes a lot, but it's something is what I'm saying.
I'd just point to what's happening to PS3 games on PSN for anyone paying attention. They are still routinely delisting PS3 games on there, as in taking them off the store. Have been for quite awhile. The price of physical copies of said game then shoots through the roof because there is no alternate way to play it outside of jailbreaking, etc.
It's up to personal taste at the end of the day. I'm sure the Gen Z Fortnite crowd isn't really too concerned about if it's playable in 10-20 years. They'll be playing the next big thing. But me, I like old games. I think they are cool and fun, warts and all.
Yes, that physical version of Concord is really doing people a lot of good!
@ATaco
That is a strictly online only game that has since been executed by the Sony Gods. My PS2 copy of Final Fantasy XI isn't seeing much play time either now that you mention it.
@SintasSays Hard disagree there. As already noted, price and convenience was a big factor.
Plus, it made the consoles so much quieter. When the Xbox 360 gained the ability to install and play games to the hard drive instead of the disc, it was a night and day difference between the noise the console made. If games still ran from disc, the PS5 would be unusable because of how loud the drive is, whereas most people agree it's a really quiet console.
I don't know Gamestop. My digital copy of Persona 3 Reload worked just fine.😄
They got ratioed when people were like u guys tried to sell me a digital copy the last time I was there
Also I was able to play all my digital games without problem and I really don't play online games so I did not have that problem
@UnlimitedSevens "I'd just point to what's happening to PS3 games on PSN for anyone paying attention. They are still routinely delisting PS3 games on there, as in taking them off the store"
Do you know what games they just recently delisted from PS3 store? I hope it's not one from my wishlist.
I just turn on my PS3 slim and bought GTA Vice City from Asia store for like 5 bucks. But i also check my wishlist that i want to buy from US store and all of them still exist such as Maximo Army of Zin, Mega Man Legends 1 & 2, Tron Bonne, Castlevania Lament of Innocence, Neo Contra, etc.
I was sad to see Blockbuster/film rental shops disappear and with them that now nostalgic and magical feeling we'll never get from the entertainment onslaught that is streaming. I will not however be sad to see GameStop or any other chain video game retailer disappear. They always felt a bit sleazy with their ridiculous profit margins on used games in particular. I will miss the smaller independent ones although some fantastic retro game shops still exist but their prices seem to increase every year.
In a nutshell, we've never had more choice, more content, more entertainment yet the magic of scarcity and the overall experience has changed irrevocably.
Ooh how cute. One crappy company dissing another crappy company.
I like owning my games not purchasing a license
@PuppetMaster
I wish it would let me post a link without getting my comment thrown out. There is a website which tracks all delisted games in each region. In my region (US) it's up to 403 delisted games, whether that's big AA-AAA titles or smaller download only stuff. The number increases every time I check it and keeps going up.
Some noteworthy games which were delisted in 2024 are Battlefield 3 / 4 / Hardline and LittleBigPlanet 3. Not anything I'm personally interested in, but still.
I guess my point is while they kept the PS3 servers running, they are culling the games library. And the games disappear almost always with no warning. Some being download only games never released physically, which are now just lost forever (Soul Calibur II HD, The Simpsons Arcade, Afterburner Climax). And in rarer and disappointing cases, delisting physically released games that are still trapped on PS3 / 360 consoles. There are a surprising amount of games marooned on PS3 which have never been ported forward. I guess Battlefield 3 just joined that list, I wasn't even aware until I looked it up to respond to this. It's a real shame.
I guess I'm getting off topic but yeah, they have been slowly shutting everything down it seems. Not sure what the Asia / UK / Japanese stores look like on that front but assume it's similar. Silver lining is if you previously bought the games you can still download them from your library, for the time being.
@Lowdefal while those things may be true the number 1 aspect of digital games is that I have access to 100s of games and I don’t have to have 100s of games sitting around my house.
@Reader297 I'm not touching grass.
@Aladin_Run
Grass is overrated.
People get mad too easy. This was just a fun swipe and nothing to get all riled up about.
Not like ya could play anyway if what ya play is cod or something else online though🤣
@UnlimitedSevens So BF 3 / 4 / Hardline and LBP 3 got delisted...I guess games from my wishlist are still intact, all of them are PS1 & PS2 classics though. But I don't know what games they delisted from Asia store since I only check for PS1 and PS2 classics.
Fortunately i already put 500 gigs on my PS3 slim and downloaded every games from my download list + installed every patch for my physical games, in case whenever Sony finally pull the plug for PS3 store. I still have around 120 gigs, more than enough for maybe 10-15 PS1/PS2 classics.
Shame for Simpsons Arcade and SC 2 HD. I wish i buy them before they got delisted.
But thanks for the info mate 🍻
Rich coming from GameStop. Maybe don't destroy physical copies?
GameStop should've kept retro games the entire time, change my mind.
@PuppetMaster Okay, what you want to do to preserve access to those is get yourself an SSD, the PS3 can take up to 1TB without issues, and clone your HDD to it. When your HDD inevitably crashes, you'll be thankful you did.
Edit: probably should clarify, you want a 2.5" SATA laptop SSD, you don't want M.2 unless they have an adapter, but that'll be one messy install.
@UnlimitedSevens if you still have a PS3, do yourself a favor and clone your HDD to a 2.5" SATA SSD ASAP for future use. You're PS3 HDD will eventually crash, and that will be your way to resurrect your PS3.
@MrPeanutbutterz the disc drive of my PS5 disc edition is silent. My Xbox 360 E was also silent while playing a disc. Never could say that about the PS4 or Xbox One.
That was pretty dumb Gamestop and didn't help you. Gamers that prefer physical games, used or new, have many other online or retail options besides your stores.
Man, yesterday must have been a rough month for Generation Z.
“Of course, contrary to common misconception, digitally downloaded games can be played on the PS5 and PS4 even when your consoles are completely offline.”
I also don't quite understand what the problem is. My Playstation 5 (Pro) has a hard disk.
@Lowdefal this approach varies. The last game I pre-ordered was System Shock on PS5, but that's due to already owning the game on PC and knowing it's good. Pre-orders are meant to be used sparingly, and when you have the upmost faith that the game is what it is. With some devs like NightDive, pre-orders can also encourage them to continue doing what they do, as those that pre-ordered the System Shock remake on PC will get System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition when that comes out (and as someone who played OG System Shock 2, that's a nice bonus).
@Aladin_Run ew no why would anyone want to do that
@GirlVersusGame …and overcharging for the used games that they sell. There was a time they had decent deals…now a used game is like $5 cheaper than brand new.
I had a new GameStop open up near my work a year ago and I have been visiting it weekly to see what new used games they get. I love it. The workers are nice but definitely bored. Sometimes I find some gems for an amazing price. I also just love the nostalgia of browsing physical games. I’ll buy physical till I can’t anymore. GameStop is my go to retailer for games.
@SintasSays i suffer with spotty internet and a house where everyone is always doing something online. having a way to download games without needing to use bandwidth is a big advantage on its own.
Do we actually play off of physical anymore? Pretty sure the major assets are loaded onto the system then patched using online services to make it playable. No real benefit from going physical over digital.
@sd7232 Thats i good point and ill just skip those completely.
I do find it amusing reading some of the pro-digital comments here. I mean, if people are happy to pay higher prices for the convenience of digital games, fine by me.
But when I think that if I sold my physical PS3, PS4, Wii U and Switch game collection tomorrow, I would literally get over a thousand pounds for it, I’m happy to stand up from the sofa and switch the game disc/card over.
Priorities and all that.
"While the post from the company is cute and achieved its intended effect, buying physical wouldn’t have necessarily helped gamers take their titles online faster during the outage – and, honestly, there are better retailers to purchase boxed software from anyway."
Give me a break. Top-notch reporting we have here. Its a stupid tweet from a sinking company. And I thought everyone was crying about game preservation and all things need to be physical... so are we officially past this irritating talking point now that we can't use our physical games during a network outage? Or we can use them, just not all the way, but it's still fine because you can play single-player? How am I supposed to feel Push Square?
@ Sammy Barker. Somebody needs to take away your thesaurus. Nobody calls a collection of anything but logs a "raft".
I will forever want physical copies.
@GravyThief (#88) my fukking man!
@lacerz (#86) bs take in general tbh, but love your profile pic
Physical to the end! Also, **** GameStop.
@GirlVersusGame GameStop regularly has trade in deals where you earn 20% extra credit and other deals where you buy 2 get one free. If you’re a pro member you can make even more. While rare, when timed right you can sometimes get more back than you paid. At the very least you get quite a good return if you’re intentional about it. You’re only getting peanuts if you bought a brand new game years ago and are trying to trade in. If you trade in within 6 months of buying it then it’s not such a bad deal. I traded in a 3-year-old PS4 and got $200 back for it on a trade-in deal. The same amount I originally paid for it on a Black Friday deal. I circulated that $200 for like 3 years of trade-ins.
@PerpetualBoredom
AI Overview
While you can technically insert a physical game disc and start playing, most modern physical games require some initial installation and updates from the internet before you can fully play them due to the need to download additional game data and patches for optimal performance and bug fixes; meaning you usually cannot play a physical game without any updates at all.
Key points to remember:
Installation from disc:
Even with a physical disc, a large portion of the game data needs to be installed on your console's hard drive for faster loading times.
Patches and updates:
Developers often release updates for physical games to fix bugs, add new features, and improve gameplay, which usually need to be downloaded even if you have a physical copy
I played everything but live service online games during the outage. Bet y'all wish you were still relevant huh?
I am a physical enthusiast through and through, but one advantage of digital that I rarely see mentioned is the ability to play the game on two consoles simultaneously with a single purchase. I can buy a digital copy of a multiplayer game and install it on both the consoles in my home. My son can play the game on his account on the system designated as the primary console, and I can play the game with him on our other console using my account. It’s nice to not have to shell out another seventy dollars so we can play a game together. This to me seems the biggest advantage of a digital purchase, but I never see it discussed in the weekly debate.
@Lowdefal game can get delivered early? You have a better chance of seeing Bigfoot. Never once out of the hundreds of games I’ve order has one ever shown up early.
@sd7232 The I only buy physical people refuse to acknowledge that.
Considering most of their locations in Toronto barely have games that anyone wants (why hoard copies of anthem? Really?) and are annoyingly cramped I don’t see why they’re so high and mighty.
Physical is dead. Reminds me of all the people who said MP3 would never replace CD's. Look how that worked out.
I didn’t skip a beat! Played multiple single player games while waiting for ESO to come back up.
@Lavishturtle Reminds me of all those people who said vinyl was dead…
Looks like the bait worked
are they trolling their workers by closing stores?
I mean hey, GS is pulling a Wendy's and I'm all for it xD But yes, haven't stopped buying physical. Only the delusional think it's dead. But I also buy digital when there's a good deal.
This outage wasn't an issue for me, good thing I don't have my PayPal on there. Plus I have PC or other hobbies to do in the meantime. But this is an eye opener, makes me miss PS3 online before that 2011 outage. It ran fine and all compared to paying for it which has not changed much. A few outages here and there. It's so crazy to me how Nintendo's online runs fine and for a good whopping $20 for 12 months! PC online runs fine and it's FREE. Maybe for compensation, how about reverting PS+ to being optional and PSN online free but for good?? No, no one wants that? Just continue being sheeps.... K
Oh wow, Gamestop?
That's a name I haven't heard ever since they pulled out of Sweden five years ago.
Thought they had closed down in the US too.
A desperate Tweet from a desperate dying Company. Gamestop shut down here in Ireland, it's shutting Stores throughout Europe and the U.S too. It's just a matter of time before they shut down everywhere else.
It’s not just for collecting. I’d say 40-50% of games just don’t grab me after a play. I can stick them on eBay and get some of my money back.
GameStop: Champions physical media.
Also GameStop: Shuts down Game Informer and deletes its digital archive.
So much rage over a dumb tweet. People saying it’s bullying need to toughen up a bit. It’s literally a roll your eyes and move on moment. Slow news day, really.
But all these people are getting mad and talking about them so maybe it worked
Physical is one thing and I do enjoy it, having a lower firmware hacked console and none of Sony's services is another. XD
Like I mean the latter I don't care for but I mean those people get by just saying.
That’s stupid. You can still play the digital games you purchased.
Uhhhhh, the outage didn't impact digital purchases any amount more than it also impacted physical purchases unless your console wasn't set as your primary PS4/PS5.
Digital games work without an internet connection just fine as long as there's no mandatory online connection.
@Medic_alert Having the physical discs during the outage meant u could’ve played a game. Downloaded the data and latest update for Cyberpunk 2077 UE during the outage on Saturday without any issues. I just couldn’t redeem Phantom Liberty (PSN code). I do play majority via digitally, but I still buy physical discs as well.
I did think it was funny that around the same time I saw this article, DekuDeals sent me an email saying a handful of physical games on my wishlist went on sale at GameStop.
@WafflingHearts I could play all my digital games without any issues during the whole outage.
Physical discs made zero difference.
Digital games need to 'check in' online now and again don't they? So a day wouldn't affect people, unless I assume you happen to pick that day to turn your console back on after an extended period. A much longer period of downtime would cause issues.
Unless I'm completely wrong, wouldn't be the first time.
@SintasSays Having a wider selection of ways to get games for cheap instead of being beholden to Playstation Store? The ability to sell and trade games you don't want? The list goes on.
@Lavishturtle CDs, cassettes, and vinyl (especially vinyl) are all still around. They're certainly not dead. It seems like you want physical to die, which is strange. Why would you want fewer options?
@UnlimitedSevens I see that you're saying, but they delisted games are not completely lost. You can still play via homebrew or emulation.
@Lanmanna
Yeah thank heavens for homebrew. Some of those games lost to time are really the best on the system. Better than the AAA titles is my hot take, which haven't aged as well as the indie gems. Earthworm Jim HD, let's freaking go.
doesitplay.org
☝️ Database of PS5 games requiring a download to play from a physical disc. Right now, 50 PS5 games in the database (11%) are listed as requiring a download to play - including the ones you would expect, like Concord and Call of Duty and some you wouldn't expect, like Balatro.
Sooooo can everyone in the comments stop saying the discs are just digital licenses or digital keys to download the game in the comments now? No? Okay then.
Most games (89%) are playable off the disc, without internet.
