It's funny but I think this update is actually a -positive- for PSSR. Since you can change the setting on the fly and the menu is semi-transparent, you can very clearly see it resolving much more detail and an overall cleaner image while on. So while detractors that simply read a headline will hold this up as "proof" that it's flawed, playing the damn thing will prove otherwise.
Also, that 40fps balanced mode is where it's at! RT + smooth framerate = heaven.
Looks surprisingly awesome art direction wise, problem is that I caught a few moments of my biggest beef with the original. That's the simple fact that ENEMIES DON'T REACT OR STAGGER when being hit! This was an absolute gameplay killer to me, as it made timing your attacks (especially with a bigger slower weapon) super frustrating, since baddies could just hit you back mid swing. Not cool.
This is something that From absolutely -nails- and I really hope that they can get the combat flow dialed in for this, since otherwise, it looks pretty metal!
A little PSA for anyone worried about difficulty. Worry not! There is an easy mode that makes it totally manageable.
I ended up throwing it on part way through, as to me, the combat just wasn't precise enough to try and master (and also fairly limited). Had a much better time just crunching through enemies and enjoying the art/atmosphere/narration, which are all fantastic.
To each their own, but as a digital artist/designer the quality of modern game visuals to me can be breathtaking. Having a good photo mode allows for the ability to create images that look nothing like a straight up "gameplay" screenshot.
Go check out http://deadendthrills.com for an example of what in game images are capable of. This dude's been breaking into games for longer than I can remember and taking some truly stunning shots long before photo modes were even invented.
My vote for best usage so far is that damn slot machine in Astros. Seriously, busting balls has never been more satisfying.....
I could certainly see the more nuanced haptics being reserved for mainly 1st party offerings in the future, with 3rd parties kinda phoning it in with just basic rumble.
But those adaptive triggers?! Man, I don't know. As long as it's fairly simple to implement, they add -a lot- to the overall experience in my humble opinion and honestly don't want to go back now. There's always gonna be growing pains with this kind of thing as devs figure out what works and what doesn't but with it being baked into the ps5 so tightly, I'm holding out hope that I'll be able to feel the individual bones snap in some fools neck in TLOU3 shudder or maybe not.
@ericG909 A friendly PSA: Whenever there's the option for performance mode with PS4Pro games, go for it. With both Ghost and God of War (I'm sure there are more ) the fans don't kick up at all in that mode. The visual difference is negligible and the lack of fan noise is -huge-.
Not really sure why, I think native 4k is just a bit much for the pro. Plus, especially with GOW, the frame rate difference is much better gameplay wise, so win-win.
