I'll gladly play 70$ for a game if they don't have DLCs, micro-transactions, season passes and updated re-releases that release after a year of the initial release etc. If I get all of that for the 70$ and it's a game that otherwise gives me huge bang for buck, count me in.
Otherwise, no. Maybe companies should look into how much they're spending on marketing while crushing developers with hard deadlines and crunch time, rather than trying to make consumers pay for it.
People saying that they used to pay exorbitant amount for cartridges don't realize that digital distribution is bigger than ever, and discs cost much less to produce. On top of that you have the aforementioned milking with DLCs, season passes and updated re-releases.
That's a terrible name. Gods and Monsters may sound kinda generic, but it gets the point across. Like Dungeons and Dragons. "Fenyx" sounds like a name I'd think up for an edgy original character when I was at the age of 13. You could just name it Rising Immortals, or Immortals' Rise and I'd be content.
I'm excited. Free to play = free stuff to enjoy. And from what I've seen in the beta, nothing is gated behind paywalls. It's literally if you want to roll for x character. And you even get currency to roll for free, it just takes longer than if you pay. And that's fine by me. I'm pretty patient so I won't be spending a cent.
I thought it was "okay". I really wish they showed more Japanese-made games (Genshin Impact, which I'm looking forward to, is Chinese-made).
Yakuza: Like A Dragon, 13 Sentinels, just to name 2.
It also incredibly sucks that Aeon Must Die is in some kind of trouble. The artstyle was rad, but apparently that trailer was outsourced to artists outside the studio, since the devs had already left. Which tells me the final game is probably not going to look like what was shown.
Godfall still doesn't garner any interest in me, but the aesthetics are awesome.
@GamingFan4Lyf Japan generally ascribes deeper meanings to colours. So you'll see a lot of blue and red when designers want to get certain points across to a Japanese audience. For example, Dante in DMC wears red, while Nero and Vergil wear blue. There's also the fact that in general blue and red are considered opposing colours. Hot-blooded and emotional protagonists usually have some red in their designs.
Gameplay-wise it also helps differentiating between your character and the chaos around it in an action scene. If your character is associated with red, it would be ingrained into you that red sparks and special effects indicated that you ddid whatever move that's on the screen, and blue special effects would mean it's the enemy.
Either way I'm looking forward to more news. They seem to be slowly developing the title and the recent trailer was just to show that it's not dead and announce that there'll be more news next year. I really hope there's some sort of character creator or similar.
@shyhh Unique equipment is something I would've liked but they're sticking with the one from the first Nioh. I don't hate it but it can get tedious to deal with.
@Judal27 You can dodge the spin but the timing is pretty tight. I stuck with low stance and very light equipment for that entire fight, but still had to block those spins every now and then.
I beat the boss of the first mission after a ton of tries. Like the first game you have to use stances to match your situation. Speed for speed. It definitely FEELS harder, but I also remember the first Nioh being extremely difficult until you unlock some of the better skills and abilities. I feel like this will be the same.
This is not saying that they didn't make it harder though. They scatter minibosses around the missions in their own Yokai realms which slow down your stamina regen. The realms don't go away unless you beat the miniboss Yokai, who are tough as nails. And generally "normal" Yokai are a bit tougher now. You really have to utilize the Yokai abilities. I'm still not used to doing the Yokai counter (R2+O) and that gets me slapped pretty hard more than once. I still don't know/understand the timing for the Yokai Counter on the bird guardian spirit.
Still though, the character creation is pretty great and it's basically Nioh, but MORE. Which is great. It also seems like they kept in some of the cheesier aspects (like the Sloth Talismans from the Onmyo skill tree), so I'm definitely looking forward to experimenting with new builds.
@FullbringIchigo I dislike the "think of the children" argument because it's not the developers' job to be parents to children. They shouldn't be censoring games because parents are ignorant. If parents don't want to get involved in their kids hobbies then it's THEIR fault, not the developers. On top of this, education about ratings should be important. Most parents understand movie ratings, so why not try to inform them about video game ratings?
@get2sammyb This is kind of why we had ratings boards as inconsistent as they are. Now it's kind of overbearing to have TWO nannies hovering over games.
PC games aren't safe either, especially if devs port the PS4 versions to PC.
@FullbringIchigo Don't censor it. There'll always be people who cry about it. But in the end gaming is a wide and diverse lake to plunge into. If you don't like this game, you can play another.
A lot of people who play games are adults. I'd be glad if Sony didn't treat us like children.
It's "child pornography" as much as killing people in games is murder. And there are games that allow you to do so in very gruesome ways.
The girls in Senran do not get naked. There's no penetration. For the most part it's fanservice that barely teeters on the edge of pornography. Senran Kagura Reflexions on the Switch (which was localized without censorship) is a game with a more in-depth "intimacy mode" than normal Senran games.
Games that are MORE EXPLICIT have been allowed on the platform before. Where FULL FRONTAL NUDITY has been shown. Games have been allowed where you saw people in half, pull out spines, blow them up, whatever. No one had a problem with either of these things, but now we have a new policy that threatens to censor.
But most gamers who play games KNOW: this is not reality. This is fiction. They can separate it.
Where does a policy (which hasn't been shown to the public or anything) like this stop? How will future games be censored to facilitate this new policy?
That's my main concern about it. People are saying "Oh it's Senran Kagura, it's niche and it's "child molestation"" so it's fine. But what happens when another game that you like, that has a some fanservice also gets censored?
@KingdomHeartsFan There HAVE been studies looking into violent video games. Most people who play them are not violent at all, despite how immersive or gruesome the games may be. There's no evidence that violent video games cause people to act violently. Just like there's no evidence that fanservice and sexy pixels make people go out and molest real people. There are millions of people who play violent video games (GTA V, over 90 million sales, deemed most successful media product of all time). If video games really did make people act out what they saw in them, then the death toll would be much crazier.
Out of those millions of people there'll be a few bad eggs who can't tell the difference between fiction and reality and hey need help. But do the rest of those players deserve to be robbed of their entertainment or have it neutered just for those few?
For the record, I play MH. I don't play Hunting Horn because I find it somewhat complex but I know its strengths. Hunting Horn is one of the LEAST used weapons in the community, despite it being so powerful. In most hunts a lot of players will focus on healing themselves and chipping away at the monster rather than using Lifepowders or playing support. I doubt that they are also the same in real life.
Censorship is terrible, whether I care for what's censored or not. I didn't buy Fates because Nintendo cut out a piece of the game and I'm not going to buy the PS4 version of this.
Playing VC4 now. Definitely wins this month for me with the amount of sighs of relief and "Oh crap what do I do" and "my plan WORKED" moments. Grabbing victory while staring down the barrel of an enemy's hyper-customized heavy tank.
Spidey is fun but it doesn't have that same feeling of tension and the relief of getting through really tough situations like VC does. In a way it feels like you're earning your legendary status among the opposing force's higher-ups because of your skill (or luck) of getting out of the situations the game puts you in and I appreciate that feeling more.
I've yet to play DQ XI but it's on my list of games to get.
I like the live-action cutscenes. It's something that games haven't seen a lot of in a long time.
But the gameplay itself? It looks... not very good. The animations look off. And I keep comparing it to the Yakuza series considering this also seems to have "special attacks" in the same vein as heat actions. But again, doesn't look as good.
The article should've just been "All of them" lol.
One of the best series in gaming, honestly. Each game has a charm like no others, and you get to watch reoccuring characters grow and change over time. The district of Kamurocho, which is the main city district featured in all the games, is like a character, living, breathing, getting older and also changing with the times. Kamurocho in 2016 (Yakuza 6) is much different than the Kamurocho in 2005 (Yakuza 1/Kiwami).
It's based on the real life Tokyo district of Kabukicho, and most changes there, such as new buildings, restaurants, etc, are reflected in the actual game.
@gingerfrog If you've never played the series before then at least play Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami. Both are on PS4.
If you have your hands on a PS3, play Yakuza 4 and 5.
The reason being that all the games star the same character(s) and there's continuity (Yakuza 0 being the prequel). And Yakuza 6 is kick started by events that happened in Yakuza 5.
Yakuza 5 has characters introduced in Yakuza 4. Both Yakuza 5 and Yakuza 6 focus on a character that's introduced in Yakuza 1/Kiwami and stays in the series all through Yakuza 6.
You can start with any game, for sure, but you get the most out of the series if you play a lot of the previous games before the newest one in the continuity. Plus going back to older games after playing the newest game with new engine and combat, may feel like a chore.
Really hoping that there's a demo or some such that doesn't require PS+. I just want to see/feel the gameplay and then I'll decide whether to get it and pay for PS+ or not. I don't have any use for PS+ right now so I don't have it.
I desperately want a port of Vanillaware's Muramasa to PS4. Dragon's Crown was absolutely FANTASTIC but I doubt I'll be playing it again. Spent a good 100+ hours on that game. Would still like to see more of 13 Sentinels, too. As well as games from other companies like Hokuto Ga Gotoku ("Like a North Star"?)
@FaultyDroid Definitely look into NieR: Automata then. You're never put on a pedestal, you're just a soldier taking orders and doing her job, until crap hits the fan and you have to deal with it.
Tales of Berseria and Yakuza 0 as well. Both are tales about the main character struggling against the world to become something more than what they started as. They're not given legendary status, they have to earn it.
@Nickolaidas I don't mind if there's some buildup or reason for it. Like in the first Mass Effect you're pretty much just a soldier who stumbles upon something so big that it involves the entire galaxy, and since you're the one who stuck your hand in, you're the one who alerted the galaxy, people look to you as to what to do next. Also being a soldier just kinda makes sense when people ask you for help.
But in ME:A the moment you're the Pathfinder, ie at the very beginning, you're instantly some kind of god. Everyone looks up to you, knows who you are, and you have some kind of lawmaker or king's authority, despite that not being your job.
Bioware has been on the decline since ME2. But Andromeda really REALLY takes the cake. They'll listen to you. You're the pathfinder."
Why would they listen to me? Cause Pathfinder is something REALLY super special, I suppose. You even choose who/which race to wake up and when.

Gravity Rush Remastered.
Played 2 and it got me into the series. Looking forward to playing through Remastered and then probably playing through 2 again.
Re: Poll: Do You Buy and Play Single Player Story DLC?
Probably because it's extra money to spend.
Or people are aware of industry practices so they wait for the special or full editions.
Even for games I like I'm iffy about getting extra story DLC. It's just more money out of my pocket that I could put to another game.
