Re: PS5 Is Absolutely Phenomenal, According to Epic Games

Nikolaidas

I wonder how much faster PS4 games are going to load on the PS5 without being optimized for the PS5's amazing SSD. Two times faster? Three? Four?

I don't think it'll be so fast to the point that it'll be zero loading times - I still think that loading a save on the Witcher 3 without optimization won't be 1 second, but I'm really curious to see this.

Re: Gap Squeezing in PS5's Unreal Engine 5 Demo Was Not a Disguised Loading Screen, Says Epic

Nikolaidas

@Col_McCafferty Okay.

I'm going to use a different example to understand where you are totally missing the point. By a mile.

Lets assume that Cerny comes up and says that the PS5 will be not have a game where the screen will have less than 4 billion polygons at the same time. It's going to have 4 billion +. Always.

Then they show a demo where the game screen has 3 billion polygons.

Some guys say "Hey, you said that the game screen will not have less than 4 billion polygons - what's the deal?"

Then comes a guy like you who says "It never bothered me if games have less than 4 billion polygons in screen - gamers are so spoiled these days eye roll "

It's not about whether it bothers you or not. It's about a statement from the lead architect coming into question. (which admittedly turned out to be a false alarm)

Can you grasp the difference?

Re: Gap Squeezing in PS5's Unreal Engine 5 Demo Was Not a Disguised Loading Screen, Says Epic

@playstation1995 Mark Cerny appears on stage.

He says that games ever since the ps2 era had loading times integrated in the gameplay and developers had to create stages around that bottleneck.

He assures us that the ps5 won't have such things.

Epic shows a tech demo for the ps5 containing a scene which resembles said bottleneck.

I think some people were right to be weary.

But don't get me wrong, I'm happy it turned out to be a feature and not a flaw.

Re: Poll: How Much Do 'True' Gameplay Trailers Matter to You?

Nikolaidas

In my opinion, the best trailer every single dev should look up to when making an AAA game reveal, is Horizon Zero Dawn.

It starts with a long cutscene explaining the campaign setting, and continues with a decent chunk of gameplay.

It gives you sufficient info in lore, tone, and gameplay.

It's perfect.

Re: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum PS5 Screenshots Are a Glimpse Into the Future

There are quite a few games which make me say to myself … "Why is this game being made?" This is one of them.

I mean, who thought that 'Boy, wouldn't it be cool to make a game about a crazy, pathetic being who talks to itself and gets bullied and beat up by everyone while it chows down on fish and imagines having a piece of jewelry' and someone actually greenlit this project?

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

Nikolaidas

@InsertUsername When I opened mine after 3 years to change the thermal paste and thermal pads, it didn't have dust in the heatsink at all - well, maybe it had enough dust to block 5-10% of the heatsink, but not like those situations you see on YouTube when the heatsink is 85% blocked by solid dirt to the point it looks like freakin cement.

Anyway, there are enough complaints about the Pro's noise to make one realize it's not Tales from the Backside. Mine would get so loud I could hear it two rooms across. I got stressed just hearing it.

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

Nikolaidas

@InsertUsername You got lucky with the quality/placement of the thermal pads and thermal paste on your pro? Got a later model which had less fan noise while producing more heat (the Read Dead 2 bundle)? Not sure.

I mean, my X-Box One X is quiet as a mouse, yet there are people who state that theirs sounds like a jet engine when playing a demanding title.

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

@TheNewButler Cerny actually explains why Horizon gets really loud on the map screen on his "road to ps5" video.

"Power consumption varies a LOT from game to game. When I play God of War on my PS4 Pro, I know the power consumption is high, just by the fan noise. But power isn't simply about engine quality. It's about the minutiae of what's being displayed and how.

It's counter-intuitive, but processing dense geometry typically consumes more power than processing simple geometry. Which is - I suspect - why Horizon's map screen with its low triangle count makes my PS4 Pro heat up so much."

Words from the wizard himself. Hope this cleared it up a bit.

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

Nikolaidas

@Arugula Dude, it's not an urban legend. I can personally testify that my PS4 Pro would go so loud, I could hear it two rooms across! I would get stressed by the noise, thinking that if I don't shut it down, it would overheat and get damaged.

I had to open it, replace the thermal pads and its thermal pads with superior ones, and while more tolerable, it's by no means a quiet piece of machinery.

Really hyped to see what Cerny did with the PS5 to prevent overheating issues. This huge heatsink makes me feel better about the console. Safety and functionality first, design and wow! factor second.

Re: Poll: What Do You Hope Insomniac Games' First PS5 Project Is?

Nikolaidas

Spider-Man 2, easily.

While I DO want Resistance to come back … I don't really want it to come back at the expense of the wall-crawler, at least not until the obligatory first trilogy is released.

Ratchet and Clank … it's visually stunning, and the action pieces are nice, and yeah it fills that Jak & Daxter hole in my chest … but it's the last on the list.

New IP? Eh, no need for now. Spider-man has a lot more stuff going for me.
