You’ve got to give Microsoft credit for how easy they’ve made it to produce next gen games. It’s a scalable platform so all you have to do is crank up resolution or frame rate and then you can put your optimised for series X sticker on and sell your disc for two platforms. PS4 and PS5 are separate generations with separate disk and separate products so releasing across both significantly increases costs.
Of course cross buy is possible. But that doesn’t remove the barriers to entry are producing a PlayStation five version. It’s logical to just release the PlayStation four version as that’s the platform with the large install base and backwards compatibility means PlayStation five owners can play it as well.
As with most things both extremes are wrong. Saying all games must work on the old hardware limits for creative use of the new hardware. Saying you cannot release new games of the old hardware denies people who haven’t upgraded access to experiences they might otherwise have enjoyed. It’s best to leave it up to the discretion of the individual first party studios to follow their own plans.
My copy of Ghost of Tsushima hasn’t arrived yet so I’m now mostly playing CrossCode and Sly 2. Have both reduced the amount of damage enemies do to me and increase the time to complete puzzles on CrossCode it’s default was too hard.
I’ll probably do a bit more Dead or Alive 6 this evening as well.
Even if I lose my job at the end of the furlough period and I’m still unemployed when the PS5 comes out. I’ll still be getting one day one regardless of price.
@Ichiban People like @David187 have registered their interest. Sony know how many people have done that and how that related to the number of pre-orders and day 1 sales for PS4.
@rjejr If you want a premium console for a 4K TV buy the PS5. If you want the cheapest possible console for a 1080p TV by the PS4 superslim. At PS4 superslim is going to need to be as cheap as possible to entice the people who don’t care about resolution or performance and just going to play excellent games. The way the PS4 is going to continue to sell is by undercutting everything else. Particularly the Xbox series S. Why would anyone buy a PS4 pro if I could get a next generation Xbox cheaper and it would offer them better performance?
@MarcG420 If we were talking about purely software-based Ray tracing similar to that used on PCs today then you would be correct. However the Xbox series X and by extension we have to assume Lockhart has a dedicated Ray tracing chip. That for that specific workload is equivalent of about 13 teraflops of additional performance.
It is kind of ironic that games with the worst performance also have the smallest performance gains from reducing resolution.
@nookie_egg They might be clearing stock for the PS4 superslim. For PS4 got slim down at the same time PS4 pro came out to take advantage of the new smaller manufacturing node. I expect the same thing will happen with the PS5.
@JapaneseSonic @JJ2 It’s about reducing costs. It’ll be substantially cheaper to manufacture them the One X And because it uses mostly the same parts as the series It means they no longer need to produce antiquated processes and old types of RAM just the One S.
@MarcG420 It’s got the same architecture but about a third of the computer unit. It should be able to manage the same effect just at a quarter of the resolution. If the series X is 4K 60fps then it will be 1080p 60fps. If the series X is 1440p 30 frames per second then expect a 30 frames per second blurry mess with all the ray tracing still happening.
@Half2398LifeTom We are at the point in the consoles lifespan where it’s at its weakest relative to PC. It’s not hugely surprising that a modern PC performs better than a 7-year-old device. The PS5 will probably perform better than most PCs sold this year so it’s going to be awhile before it’s worth releasing PS5 games on PC. What matters is that there is a sufficiently large pool of PC players with a computer capable of running these games, not whether a small minority of the most powerful PCs can surpass PS5 performance.
I’ll get the version with the disk drive. The last game I bought would’ve been £55 to unlock the full game digital. Buying a disk was only £12. Although I did have to sit through 65GB of patches before I could go back to playing it.
To be fair they did exactly the same thing in the run-up to and the early years of the PS4. I expect this initiative will also provide the early PlayStation plus PlayStation five games.
It’s clear that one of Sony’s objective in creating a PlayStation 5 was to make it easy to develop for. They hay been collaborating with epic to make sure that engine works perfectly on the PlayStation 5 and epic clearly appreciate the effort.
Microsoft has looked at today’s games and build a system that will run them as well as possible and continues to want games to scale across three or potentially four different Xbox‘s as well as PCs.
I would expect that time to triangle for a new PlayStation five exclusive to be less than that for a Xbox series X exclusive. But it to be more difficult to port a currently existing PC game to PlayStation five and it would be to Xbox series X.
Pricing of games is a difficult issue. You can Subscribe to more games you can play for a year for less than the price of a full game with services like game pass PlayStation now and Nintendo is online’s NES app. What you’re paying for when you buy a game it’s an experience better than those services. Length isn’t really what’s important. It’s added value that is important . But if the game runs for really short period of time it’s unlikely to add a huge amount of value. They need to be aware of what their games are worth to people and price them accordingly.
@Lurker @nessisonett Out of the six trails games I’ve played Trails in the Sky 3rd it’s the only one I haven’t finished. The first two trails in the sky and the 3 trails in cold steel all had a mixture of towns, over world, requests and dungeons. Whereas the third trails in the sky just seem to be one giant dungeon with doors leading to short stories. It became tedious long before the end. I certainly didn’t feel the lack of any of the story I must’ve missed in the later games so my advice would be to skip it.
Vita to Switch wasn’t the generational leap in graphics I was expecting in 2021. But I’ll take it. Looking good. I’ll definitely be getting this to play on my PS5.
That they’ve managed to find a few minutes of good looking bug free cinematics doesn’t necessarily tell you a lot about the overall quality of the game. The other two also look good when they work.
Ratchet and Clank a cracking time and Ar nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star. Both of which I’m streaming through PlayStation now as they are PS3 games I missed the first time around.
@Agramonte Your logic is sound. But I’d hate to spend that kind of money on a drive only to find that it doesn’t work. Because it requires a bit of extra speed to make up for not having as many priority levels or something along those lines.
@Agramonte My understanding was that the PS5 drive was 5.5 GB/s and the Sabrent is 5.0GB/s. Unless I’ve misunderstood something whilst it close it should still be too slow to be used as a upgrade drive in the PS5. The Samsung HHHL drive wouldn’t fit inside a PS5.
@MarcG420 Maybe you should try looking at some shops to see what is currently available right now. Watching specialty videos on YouTube about what maybe theoretically possible in the future doesn’t give you a clear understanding of currently existing technology.
@MarcG420 I suggest you search for NVME SSDs and look at the speed of what is currently available for sale. I would be very surprised if you could find anything that matches or exceeds the the internal drive in the PS5. There might be something available by the time for PS5 launches but currently anything you buy now won’t work for PS5 games.
@Collette It’s hard to predict at this point just how much of a boost games remastered onto PS5 are going to get. It’s a new architecture not just high numbers so I think we have reason to be optimistic.
@Ah-Void come on. Nazis win with their advanced war machines leading to the steam punk robotic apocalypse. Nazis implement plans Z sending out waves of Nazi zombies and Nazis use nuclear weapons creating a radioactive waste land. Sending out waves of Nazi mutant. Are all completely different storylines and in no way repetitive or derivative.
@Number09 Nothing has ever truly been instant. However like with a cartridge based console such as the SNES It will be quick enough than the screen will simply turn briefly black. You won’t need loading screens to reassure you that the isn’t a problem.
I’ve just read an article on the views of a former Sony executive. Do I care what people in the industry think or do I just want to watch a sizzle reel. I obviously care what knowledgeable people have to say. I also appreciate a good trailer.
@TVRFLY The next HDMI standard will enable either 8K 60 frames a second or 4K 120 frames per second. That doesn’t mean the next generation consoles have the power to deliver either. I suspect the situation will be similar to how it was with the PS3 and full HD games. Not impossible but incredibly rare.
I quite like timed exclusives. It means we get to play a properly ported game on the day we’re expecting it. I think we get better results if developers focus on one platform and then have a decent amount of time to make a proper ports the other ones. Trying to produce ports for a quarter of a dozen consoles day one is just a recipe for bugs and patches.
Once the PS5 is out. I wonder whether we will go back to having significant chunks of games shown at the same time. Often that are coming out in the distant future. All over we’ll stick with the more piecemeal state of play approach. With things announced closer to release. It’s only in the last couple of months that we can look back on that press conference having been able to play all the games.

@MarcG420 If you’d watched the video you linked to you would be aware that the presenters SSD in his computer was not as fast as the PS5.
