Re: Gangs Are Raiding Lorries to Steal PS5 Stock

Severian

@TG16_IS_BAE funny story from a friend who lived in Long Beach: he said that he grew disappointed with people in his new city because even the Crips and Bloods recycled, but the average person in his new town didn’t even bother.

As for gangs keeping to themselves... wish that were the case because I had run-ins with gangs on both sides of the country. So this is not true at all.

Re: Sony Poised to Purchase Crunchyroll for Almost $1 Billion

Severian

@Constable_What Couldn't agree more with you there. I don't like monopolies. I enjoy a lot of Crunchyroll's anime offerings, but it's the independence and small company that makes their model appealing.

In the best case scenario, Sony will take a hands-off approach and it will simply infuse Crunchyroll with a lot of capital, but in the worst case, it will censor things more at the very least.

Re: Rumour: Bloodborne Remaster Is Real, Coming to PS5 and PC

Severian

@SeverinMadara As far as save files, yes. My HK data does not get read by my US data.

The short story is, I bought Bloodborne Asian edition on disc. Downloaded the DLC with my US account. Incompatible.

Bought the American digital edition--it couldn't read my Asian data.

So: I put in over 100 hours in the Asian disc and now have to start over in the American digital purchase. I won't be buying it again unless they have significantly more content.

Re: Sony Abandons Decades-Old Japanese Controller Logic for PS5

Severian

Button mapping was patched into the Switch a few months ago...shouldn’t be a problem for Sony and PS5. The button mapping was necessary to address the same complaint made abouf Dark Souls Remastered for those not used to using B to confirm (X on PS) in an attempt to streamline controls across platforms, and NintendoLife players and staff weren’t happy about B to confirm and A (O on PS) to cancel before the system update.

Sony has the money and resources for the option to button map rather than force people into a set scheme.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Worried About the Future of Western RPGs on PS5?

Severian

Not worried. I play Nintendo and Sony games for their first party and third party exclusives...most of the acquisitions by Microsoft were never from companies I ran to, with Bethesda for example I lost interest in Fallout with 3 because it was a lot different from Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics in terms of tone and feel.

Aside from classic Rareware games, I can’t really think of what I would want that’s an Xbox exclusive that makes me need to run out and grab the system.

Re: No, There's Probably Not a Yakuza Game Reveal Planned for Sunday

Severian

@Gamer83 Very good points. The greatest fans are the ones who can laugh at themselves and criticize what they love, not blindly follow and worship it, which in this case is Sony.

To appease the mods and general group here though, I just finished Yakuza 3 Remastered, hated it and loved Yakuza 4 Remastered, and am on Yakuza 5 Remastered (boy that's a mouthful). If they do announce a Kiwami 3, I'll be a little mad I wasted time on 3, but hopefully the quality of life improvements and extras will be worth a second run-through. All the enemies turtling and those chase sequences...hated it. Didn't mind the orphanage or beach life at all--just the combat AI.

Re: Rumour: Bloodborne Remaster Is Real, Coming to PS5 and PC

Severian

I don't know if I'm willing to spend for another Bloodborne after having to buy it twice because I had the HK disc and couldn't get the DLC for my American account without opening a HK account.

If they had a free upgrade to PS5 for having the original, this would be nice, but nah, not gonna happen....though assuming it adds a lot of content, it will be essentially a somewhat new game.

Re: Soapbox: Screw Sony's PS5 Game Pricing, I'll Just Wait for Sales

Severian

@theheadofabroom Precisely! There is of course a cost for the pastime, but it shouldn't be treated as this elite practice.

The whole argument for elitism and everyone needing to pay seems to also forget that some of us grew up sharing our consoles with our neighbors who couldn't afford them and vice-versa. After all: gamer culture isn't just playing games, but the related interests. Even if a neighbor couldn't afford a SNES or PS1 back in the day, said neighbor could still be your favorite player 2, who ends up playing chiptunes on an acoustic guitar for example.

And as much as I hate the f2p model, there are also free games, and free to pay are still options for some gamers rather than blockbusters or indies.

I hope that those of us in poor financial situations improve our lot, and the social connections from gaming have actually shown me that gamer culture, for all the criticism of it, has just as many cool people as it has some toxic jerks.

Re: Soapbox: Screw Sony's PS5 Game Pricing, I'll Just Wait for Sales

Severian

This raises an interesting question because last year, on NintendoLife, I griped that a new release was too expensive and I would rather wait for a sale. One user said that I should get a second job instead of complaining, and the argument later devolved into prices and value.

He then argued that if gaming is too expensive, nobody deserves to play since cheapskates shouldn't play video games--thinking that everyone should pay full price to "indie" developers especially. When I countered that some of us had our systems gifted to us, he then argued that poor people shouldn't play video games and nobody should give them systems or games to play for free.

You can imagine how well that went when everyone else rightly pointed out how dumb and dense he was. Seriously: the pricier these get (understandably for hardware and development costs), the harder it is for many of us to justify full price and wait for sales, even if some elitist buffoons call us cheapskates who don't deserve to play because we're "poor".

I'm still getting a PS5 and games, but I'm in no rush to adopt one this year--likely in a year or two when a lot more games are out, prices drop and more sales happen, and of course a Pro model will likely be released.

On the other hand, I got the first PS3 when it still had backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games...but that was a surprise gift from my ex-girlfriend, not an early adoption purchase for $600!

Re: Random: How PS4 Saved a Japanese High School Student's Life

Severian

Hmm how did she initially meet the man? I am wondering if it was also through PlayStation interaction.

Glad she escaped--these are disgusting little abominations who I no longer consider human for their predatory behavior.

Who the hell does that kind of crap to a little girl? Ugh.

Re: Dragon Quest XI S on PS4 Is a Switch Port, No Upgrade for Existing Dragon Quest XI Players

Severian

@MJA24 while you raise good points, my view of square is that they were great while they were on Super Nintendo. I saw the PlayStation era as hit or miss and then almost everything since PS3 as mostly miss. Granted, I saw the bugs and translation errors on FF7 and its general setting unappealing, but this is because my own preference was Chrono Trigger and FF6, along with Super Mario RPG being my view of what the Squaresoft quality was. If you define it as the PlayStation era, your view is a little later than mine for 90s Square.

Re: Poll: Would You Pay $70 for a Brand New PS5 Game?

Severian

@Xiaolin You make a good point--but it's already a bit different from mine. Yes, I was referring to BASE costs and relative value of what $70 then would be worth today, but if you include microtransactions, then games are more expensive these days because it's not just cartridge materials and packaging then. And regarding greed--this is NEVER absent in the equation.

Re: Poll: Would You Pay $70 for a Brand New PS5 Game?

Severian

And while people complain of paying $70 in 2020 for a PS5 game, I’m remembering how Earthworm Jim on the SNES cost the same price back in 1994 while Donkey Kong Country was $60, and then Chrono Trigger was $70 in 1995. According to inflation, it’s equivalent to paying $117 in 2020, so technically, value is down even if the price sticker seems higher...
