If a new game in the series did emerge and it did not come to PS, as reluctant as I may be, I would likely buy a Series S just for that one game. A superb series, with some of the best, art, level design and all-round world-building seen in games.
Also won’t be playing. As much as I’d like to try this out, it’s not convenient. I don’t particularly agree with the timed element to this and hopefully we don’t see more of this type of thing. It’s too convoluted and doesn’t respect anyone’s time.
I still have a grand total of 36 hours total play on my PS5 since launch day. It’s currently boxed away and unfortunately it’s not worth settling up to meet the demands of Capcom’s marketing team.
The original game on PS3 had some freezing issues. I know that the disc copy I had was unplayable past a certain point and this was not uncommon. It’s lucky that this is tucked away in the sequel and not the original, as I believe it was disc only on the PS3.
How are articles posted from the future? I’ve always wondered this.
Turned the PS5 on for the first time in over a month to try out the Watch Dogs Legion trial. As anticipated, the main draw is touring a virtual London. The lack of main character is immediately quite jarring - I really can’t think who thought that was a good idea from a narrative point of view.
Alas not much time for gaming at the moment - I see I’ve totalled 35 hours total game time on the PS5 since launch day - sad face.
Any idea where the trial is to be found on the store? The apparent lack of a demos section on the PS5 does not aid matters.
I know this game is not supposed to be that great, but I've still been tempted by it for a while, mainly for the sightseeing aspect and touring around a semi-faithful recreation of London. The lack of a main character is disappointing, but also strangely appealing at the moment, as my gaming time is little to non-existent right now, so not having much of a story/main character to become invested in isn't perhaps so bad.
The very existence of the V1 headset and its lack of HDR passthrough is a major source of annoyance. It’s the headset I own and it’s quirks, coupled with the fact that I experience HDMI handshake issues with the Pro have meant that just getting something on the screen can still be trial and error. To this day, I need to have the headset plugged in to the processor unit even if I want to play games normally on the television. I’ve yet to setup PSVR on the PS5, but hopefully the issues I’ve experienced will not persist.
I can’t really justify upgrading to a V2 headset, especially in the light of the announcement of the next generation. I hope that PSVR2 is backwards compatible (hopefully something like camera tracking won’t prove an issue?), as it would be good to set the original headset aside in favour of a device that hopefully offers a better, more streamlined experience, free of quirks and little annoyances.
This really is the major point. When the SingStar servers were shut down, that was communicated well in advance. There are many, many people that still own and play on these platforms who may well now miss out on a number of digital-only games if they choose/cannot afford to buy them before the planned store closures.
Sony’s attitude towards their legacy systems and games has really disappointed me. They will happily celebrate their history in Astro’s Playroom, yet it seems to be exactly that - history. Sony do not want to keep this legacy alive for the great number of people who still wish to play on all the Sony consoles and not just the one that is considered the latest and greatest.
I shall certainly look after my PS3 even more now and perhaps add a few more titles to the horde in the future. Perhaps more people may swing back to physical collections if this is the direction that Sony is heading in.
So this is why I’ve been steadily amassing that PS3 physical collection.
Of course this was going to happen at some point, but perhaps this was expected a little later rather than sooner.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve invested so much in PS platforms over the years, I almost wish I’d favoured Xbox, as they seem to have a far better approach towards backwards compatibility and legacy support.
I tried this very briefly. It seemed to be rather bland, seen-it-all before sci-fi fare. Then everything takes a bit of a turn and it becomes slightly darker, but nonetheless bland. These types of live service/live event games just aren’t for me.
I’ve also been tempted by this on the occasions it has been offered cheaply.
Sometimes it’s not such an awful notion to play games which are received as poor or generally outright bad. Understanding what it is that doesn’t work about a given game can inform and heighten our appreciation of what does. Although it can also be a complete waste of time, so there’s that too.
Good day for VR news it seems. It’s encouraging to see some momentum after a bit of a lull in major releases since Iron Man VR. Hopefully this steady stream of games will continue until the next generation of PSVR.
HUKD is indeed very handy. There are a couple of people who post there who always provide details of all the PSN sales, often a day in advance. It’s actually even easier to browse than PS Prices.
I remember playing it when it came out. I bought it again recently to add to the collection, so will likely have another play through it at some point.
Out of interest, where are the screens captured from? Are they promotional shots, or from another platform, because having just been playing the PS2 last night, there is no way the game could look like that on the old Sony hardware.
More articles like this please, just what I was hoping for after the recent discussion about the direction of the site.
Not surprising, but I had a niggling feeling it wasn’t going to happen, so actually glad it has now been formally announced.
Seeing as it sounds as if there will be no separate processing unit, what are the technical reasons that the current VR processing unit is still required on PS5? Also, is there a good reason why the PS Move Navigation Controller was never utilised for PSVR (beyond lack of tracking light)?
Hopefully it will be backwards compatible and the unit will be more future-proof. The lack of HDR pass-through on the V1 headset is still an annoyance.
It has happened before. Bioshock Infinite came to PS Plus less than a year after its release. The title was released end of March 2013 and hit Plus February 2014, so it’s not unheard of for big releases to be offered not long after release. I’m sure there are also other examples.
At least they squeezed in about four seconds of gameplay at the end, which is a bonus. If they had just removed the UI it would have been a marked, although perhaps misleading, improvement.
More reviews would be good, even if it's mini reviews of smaller releases that wouldn't normally see coverage.
Perhaps a semi-regular Talking Point strand that isn't topical and is geared towards gauging community opinions, attitudes and interests. Generally, a few more opinion pieces would be nice to see. For example - pieces on favourite moments in games; why we play games, what we gain/learn from them; what we would like to see from them in the future.
Community-driven content, perhaps in the way of quality article contributions would be interesting to see.
Quizzes! These are genuinely rather entertaining - keep them going - perhaps a few genre-specific ones?
In terms of video content, personally, I rarely watch any site-produced video content (that goes for all gaming sites, not just Push Square). I simply prefer to read the content, so I wouldn't like to comment on how this area could be improved.
Please, if at all possible, is it possible to expunge the term "Japanese Giant" from the site? I've toyed with using a browser plug-in that can conveniently change this to read "Sony", so I don't have to see it multiple times a day.
Little to no "celebrity" news that is loosely connected to the gaming world.
EDIT: After reading through these comments, I’d like to echo and add a few points.
I think more retrospective articles would be a good addition. On top of What Are You Playing This Weekend?, perhaps there could be a semi-regular piece where the community recommend older titles from past generations. Admittedly, this can and does exist to some extent in the forums, but celebrating past generations and highlighting games which others maybe have missed is perhaps a little more noteworthy and it would be good to see more people participating in discussions.
I see a lot of comments regarding the celebrity news - there seems to be a consensus that this is really not liked. Perhaps it would be an idea to conduct a reader survey to better understand the demographic of your readers? I get the sense that there are indeed a lot of older gamers here, so it is highly likely that those celebrity stories will have limited appeal. A survey that queries age ranges, location, systems owned, amount of games owned, hours played per week, preferred genres etc. would help to provide a broad overview of your readership.
In summary - more retro coverage, less celebrity nonsense and a focus on community-driven content.
For avid collectors who are wary of the possibility of corruption occurring in decades old memory cards, potentially, yes. I would agree that it is rather pricey, but a lot of new peripherals for retro equipment seem to be overpriced these days.
“...later Slim models of PlayStation 2...” is a little non-specific. Is one to presume it works on earlier revisions of the Slim? Lack of further detail would suggest it’s related to all Slim models. Some clarification would be appreciated.
I recall it being a little tricky at first, until you start levelling up and begin to pick up some better weapons (so like many games really, but it was more noticeable for me here).
Be very wary of accepting any items from other players in online sessions (which depends on whether many play this now or not) as you run the risk of receiving items that will literally max out your abilities right from the start, making the game ridiculously easy.
I played this a lot on release, it really is one of the best games of the last generation. The day/night dynamic made for very different play styles and venturing out at night was always a prospect filled with apprehension. The game invasion mechanic also added a lot to the experience - being hunted by another player added a lot more tension to those nighttime excursions.
I haven’t played it so much since completing the main story and The Following, but there is still probably plenty to go back to. I always hoped for a Pro update that never came and it would be great to see a PS5 update, but perhaps that may coincide with the eventual release of the sequel?
Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see any mention of the remaster on the store description. I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere as a pre-order bonus. Was it added as free content at a later point?
This is one aspect of the store that persistently frustrates me - that there is commonly not an option to upgrade to a deluxe version of a game. Granted, some games do offer this, but in this instance it’s absurd that your purchasing decision affects your ability to obtain other content. Penalised for spending less?
Ace Combat is indeed a bargain. I picked it up on disc very cheaply, but have yet to play - oh the tempting convenience of digital vs. further expenditure.
No surprise to see Dark Souls Remastered at its perpetual sale price of £10.49. Will it ever dip lower?
I use the PDW-R. I grew accustomed to its short to mid-range capabilities. I prefer the rate of fire to DMR, although my preferred DMR is the QBU-88. Do you use scoped sights with DMR?
The Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises launched around the same time, yet the latter has been left to pasture so to speak. It’s arguably the more inventive of the two series, the psychological horror aspect makes for vastly superior storylines compared to Resident Evil. Every aspect of its design - from the industrial noise of a soundtrack to the use of camera angles and framing - are designed to confuse and disturb the player and add further to the sense of disorientation and dread. The games (for the most part) are incredibly successful at what they set out to achieve and it’s hard to see why the series has been left dormant for so long.
The Silent Hill series still proves hugely popular with its fans. I remember buying a rare promo “Toluca Lake” t-shirt”, but ended up selling it to someone who had the most ridiculously expansive collection of SH memorabilia I have seen - it went to a better home.
I see that a number of games in the series are also proving increasingly rare - Shattered Memories on the PS2 of course, but also the PS2 version of SH4. The series would really benefit from some remasters at the very least. We have had so many uncalled for and unwarranted remasters over the past few years and it’s a tragedy that this series lies in the hands of a publisher that currently does not seem to care about its fate.
Let’s wait and see what emerges, but hopefully something SH related is on its way sooner rather than later.
I’ve played solidly as engineer for the duration of my time with the game. I also use the exact same gun, the PDW all the time. I think if I changed weapon I wouldn’t even be able to compete.
I played it first on Wii, which is arguably the best version due to the aforementioned control method. The PS2 port is hard to come by, so commands a high price these days. The only version I now own is the PSP one, which is a good place to play it. I also need to finish off Origins on the PSP too.
I would definitely recommend Shattered Memories, although the fact that it eschews combat may not be to everyone’s taste.
Thankfully nobody has mentioned Book of Memories thus far in the comments...
And nobody is ever going to mention those obscure mobile games from years back... hopefully.
The squeak they make is quite scary, especially when coming across the semi- invisible incarnation.
EDIT: I just checked the wiki on these creatures and it reminded me that it’s just the Larval Stalker that squeaked.
The school level is probably the best part of the whole game (although many sections from the opening to this point are also superb). The soundtrack as you descend the ladder in the corner of the courtyard is truly terrifying. I recall the ominous wailing siren sounding at this point too. This section was the first foray for Harry - and the series - into its alternate world and could not have been realised in a more effective or spine-tingling manner.

This section was the first foray for Harry - and the series - into its alternate world and could not have been realised in a more effective or spine-tingling manner.
