Re: Fortnite's Record-Breaking Dragon Ball Z Crossover Leaked

Ironic that Push Square posted a leak via the same twitter account that they previously made fun of for getting a leak wrong, sarcastically calling them a "gaming insider". Seems hypocritical to use the same source that you previously questioned the legitimacy of.

Re: Ex-Square Enix Dev Heard Rumours of Sony Buyout

Abeedo

Sad thing is that is Sony does buy Square Enix that's going to be a death knell for all their smaller mid-budget games. Things like Live Alive, Bravely Default and Triangle Strategy might thrive on other consoles, but they'll definitely have a harder time appealing to Playstation users due to the different audience.

Re: Ubisoft's Free-to-Play Roller Champions Could Already Be on the Chopping Block

@Milktastrophe The reason they made it free to play is because that style of game has become more lucrative than paid games with multiplayer. At least with free to play games, people are willing to try it and possibly get sucked in, while paid multiplayer games would put off a large portion of people from playing the games just from looks alone, making it very possible that they would've earned far less.

Re: Ubisoft's Free-to-Play Roller Champions Could Already Be on the Chopping Block

I remember a few years back Ubisoft appeared to be a titan in the gaming industry, and their position in the market seemed unmovable. After the success of some of their live service games like Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor they realised how lucrative microtransactions are, and decided to make everything, even their single-player games like Assassin's Creed, live service. Now they're at the point where they're realising chasing the biggest gaming trends by making uninspired games with half-baked mechanics is a poor business model. It's so surreal to see this once great company struggling, but it was their own lack of foresight when greenlighting projects that lead to their downfall.

Re: Final Fantasy 16's English Cast Will Speak with British English Accents, Not American

Abeedo

@nomither6 I hear that, but I'd also like to say that a lot of the biggest criticisers of this new FF are talking badly about having another game in a medieval fantasy aesthetic. Taking fantasy from other cultures just gives a way to change things up while making things feel unique. Sure I think there'd be people complaining, but if it's done well the results will speak for themselves.

Re: Overwatch 2 Will Be Free-to-Play on PS5, PS4

Abeedo

@thefourfoldroot1 I have two points about this. First of all, Fortnite wouldn't dabble in loot boxes, it's just skins you can get in the store, or from the battle pass. Considering the fact that people know what they're getting beforehand, it means people will only invest if they want something. With loot boxes people end up buying and rebuying due the randomness of the situation.

Second of all, I can say whales exist in so many varieties that you can't really confine them to just live service games. If a game comes out, most people getting it will get the regular releases, but there will always be those that get €200 collector's editions. Even with indie games, people would prefer shelling out for €50 physical editions, despite the fact that the games exist for less than a tenner on the digital store. There will always be people who want to spend more money than they should, so the best thing a company can do is make their sale options as consumer-friendly as possible so that ordinary people don't feel pressured into paying lots of money just to feel like they're enjoying the game.

Re: Overwatch 2 Will Be Free-to-Play on PS5, PS4

@thefourfoldroot1 Fortnite is a free to play game, yet still remains very pro consumer. I know many people who refuse to spend a penny in the game, and managed to get plenty of skins and participate in every season for rewards.

Re: Darth Vader, Indiana Jones Vibin' in New Festival Fortnite Season

Abeedo

@thefourfoldroot1 People stay because the game is constantly being updated to be an always changing and growing platform. It's due to this investment that the game can always stay fresh. Developers stay on this game likely because they value getting paid, and/or being in a stable position that allows them to provide for themselves and their families.

Re: MultiVersus Closed Alpha Will Let You Test Warner Bros' Platform Fighter on PS5, PS4

Abeedo

@Voltan It's like a 2d platforming game, but with fighting mechanics. So instead of comboing someone on a level plane, you're doing it over various platforms. It means the games are more focused on movement across the entirety of the stage. Knocking someone off the stage adds an extra layer of depth which causes players to try and combo each other close to the edge.

Re: Apex Legends Is Pulling in Insane Revenue

Abeedo

@UltimateOtaku91 I mean EA recently have shown greater interest in developing single-player games with its revival of franchises such as Skate and Dead Space, but also it's focus on the EA Originals side of things, with them publishing Lost in Random and It Takes Two, one of which won game of the year.

I think what many people forget is that while $5 billion dollars in live service games certainly is nothing to sneeze at, $2 billion for single-player still is a large enough amount to make the business even more profitable and keep investors happy. With game companies starting to realise that there's a market for both, I think we can expect a greater quantity of single-player games from big publishers in the future.

Re: 'Multiple Sources' Said Sony Is Buying Square Enix, Allegedly

Abeedo

@CieloAzure It's not even the live service part that irks me. It's the fact that every studio they own has to be making large scale big budget cinematic games, and that the really interesting smaller games that have lots of creativity, and take around half the time to make, will get shafted because it doesn't match what the core Playstation fan wants out of the studio.

Re: 'Multiple Sources' Said Sony Is Buying Square Enix, Allegedly

Abeedo

Well this sucks. I can't see things faring out better under Sony leadership than under independent control. Looking at what happened to Japan Studio, I doubt Sony would allow interesting games like Triangle Strategy, or Live Alive remake to get made. Only thing I see improving is their the NFT businesses, although why Square would sell off some of their most iconic franchises right before an acquisition is beyond me.

Re: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Is Still a Long Way Away on PS5, PS4

Abeedo

I'm actually looking forward to this. It looks like something new and different, and it looks legit the team are very passionate about the project despite what the internet thinks about it. Not every movie franchise needs to be turned into an open world rpg or mmo (or both). Here's hoping that this game turns out to be good, and at least somewhat financially successful.
