I was on Premium & had planned to lapse until Black Friday for a few months, even before the price hikes. The only value I really got out of Premium over Extra was a Gravity Rush Remastered playthrough.
With the price hikes, I'm just going to lapse entirely and shift my multiplat/multiplayer gaming to PC. If Sony announces stuff that gets me excited about the next couple of years on PS5 I'll reconsider.
If Extra adds a bunch of PSVR2 games, that could get me back on the service.
What I'm going to do is wait until there's a game on PS5 that I actually want to play online, and then pick up a 1- or 3-month sub depending on how long I expect to play.
Multiplayer & multiplatform game? I'll probably opt for the Steam version.
The sad part is I think it'll be a long time before PS Studios convinces me to re-up.
They're taking away the 12-month discount without raising the 1-month and 3-month price... they're gouging the most loyal customers, which makes it seem like they're very nervous about revenue for 2024. I hope I'm wrong, but it suggests they don't have much to show besides the slop presented for the disastrous May showcase.
@Loamy They had so little in May they felt the need to show that complete headscratcher of a Concord trailer. It was a very grim showcase, and it's all we've got to go on. I hope I'm wrong...
@AdamNovice I'm a massive PlayStation fan and I want the platform to be successful. It does not seem to be on the right track, based on what we actually know. I hope they have a bunch of secret first-party hits on the way but that seems unlikely.
From the blog post, it seems like 1-month and 3-month prices are remaining as-is. That's interesting, as those plans are now more valuable than they were yesterday. Good to know I can grab 3 months of Essential/Extra for $25/$40 when needed
@Voltan You might as well go for $53 for one year essential via Cdkeys. Black Friday ain't gonna be better than that.
I was personally planning to lapse from Aug-Nov and then consider a fresh Extra coinciding with Black Friday. I enjoyed having Premium for 9 months but as someone who'd played a lot of PS4 games, I couldn't justify a full price renewal. At this point I'm just going to play online on PC until Sony can make amends for the putrid May showcase.
@AdamNovice All of your reasons are wild speculation. Your idea that they're going to shift to a day one model is pure BS. It's much more likely that Jim Ryan has screwed the pooch chasing the already-dead Fortnite fad and they're desperate to shore up their #s for 2024 earnings calls.
This is also an indication that the first party software situation is a complete mess and they expect to be desperate for revenue following Spider-Man 2.
@AdamNovice The US government lets Wall Street run wild and the result is that every industry is charging more and offering less. This is why Hollywood is on strike, it's why more big employers are resorting to offering contract jobs without benefits, and it's why every subscription service is increasing its prices.
This is being done to protect their stock price. Fundamentally, it's about greed.
Combined with the bad showcase, this actually has me wondering whether I should sell my PS5. Just muddle along on PC until new Horizon and Tsushima, which could be 4+ years away
I have a solid backlog so I'll be fine without any ps plus going forward. Too bad they ***** the bed on tlou2 & I can always play the next monster hunter on pc. Hope they give me a reason to reconsider in the future!
@TheCollector316 I don't believe Sony makes any headphones with planar magnetic transducers. If you're curious about what these sound like, you could pick up something like a Hifiman 400SE on Amazon with the intention of returning it.
@IOI I agree, it's surprising. What Audeze does is on another level of price & performance compared to, say, Pulse 3D, so I think this is a play to get wealthier PS gamers to shell out even more $.
I would love to see some sort of fusion of gaming and the movie theater experience. Seems like it would be super difficult to come up with the right game for it, though.
@General_Disarray Yeah but this is SIE making the acquisition rather than the mothership. I guess these "elite" controllers are selling well and they see $$$ in developing more luxury accessories.
@TheCollector316 Audeze makes very expensive (and rather heavy) headphones for people who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on DACs and Amps. One would guess this will lead to PlayStation selling $500+ planar magnetic headphones.
Interesting move if you're a headphones nerd. I spend a lot of $ on a high-end headphones rig for PS5 gaming (Arya + Hel 2) but I feel like that's unusual.
@Ooccoo_Jr It's wildly ***** up. You think they'd make some games for this thing!
I loved GT7 and Horizon. Really enjoyed Before Your Eyes & I played through a nice chunk of Moss 2. Besides that, I've dabbled with Pistol Whip, Kayak VR (pretty bad controls), and Song in the Smoke (bad graphics, regret the purchase)... Didn't get around to playing Pavlov. In general my PS5 has been collecting dust due to BG3 on PC, and Starfield is hot on its heels. We desperately need a non-awful PS5 showcase this year. :/
It was credibly reported that Bungie convinced them to soft-cancel the game and that the rationale was that it wasn't live service-y enough. Until Sony or ND have more to share on this I feel justified in being pissed at Bungie.
TLOU2 had once-in-a-generation gameplay and a multiplayer version would be a killer app for PS5 and PS+. The whole situation is a huge shame.
I'm going to let my PS Plus lapse for a few months and wait to re-up on Black Friday. Between Starfield, BG3, and the PSVR2 games I haven't played I can go without. It's really a shame they haven't been able to churn out a 1st party multiplayer killer app like, say, Factions 2.
Will they do several DLC for this one, too? I never understood why more games don't bring in $ that way. I'd have happily paid $50+ for more BOTW, RDR2, HZD, etc.
I am still reeling from the May showcase and the Factions 2 semi-cancellation. I was an enthusiastic PSVR2 buyer just 5 months ago; Sony needs to show me that I've got something to look forward to. If they can't, Starfield is going to be my gateway to being mostly on PC.
There are some great moments in Burning Shores that feel like a test run for a 2-player co-op game. That said, I hope they won't need to sacrifice fidelity if it's 2-player co-op.
For my $ the best new PS5 experience from this year is GT7 using VR2. It's satisfying and addictive enough to justify the headset's price. Hasn't recieved nearly enough attention imo.
I was enthusiastic about FFXVI based on the demo and the early goings when the poll dropped. Now 66% through, and I'm not sure I want to finish.
The spectacular boss battles are fewer and further between than I thought they'd be. Most of the fights are push X to win. The story gets weaker as it goes on, and the characters' dead MMO-style facial animations don't help.
I hope Square uses FF7R as a template for the next mainline FF. Way better game.
Lol as if anyone posting here has any idea what the TOTK budget is
I adore the game; based on its depth and scope I would guess that Nintendo put an insane number of very well-paid bodies to work on it — & for a significantly longer period than the gap between HZD and HFW
lol ok. They're lucky it became a cool thing to say the game is "good now" because it's really just... not. Night City is pretty, but it's a nanometer deep
