Lmao push square looking real funny now with their low score, extremely tough for a so called" iterative sequel" like spiderman 2 to get a 91 on Metacritic, just shows you that they must have done something right. Well deserved on the scores.
@Sakai Your whole comment seemed to imply that Sony as a whole have nothing in the pipeline besides ' live service garbage" . I simply pointed out that's not the case. I wasn't even discussing the subject of the article in the first place lmao.
Also the article is simply a Jason Schreier opinion piece, he actually doesn't have any concrete info about any of Sony's multiplayer projects and is simply speculating ie; " his opinion".
@IslandLogic, While I do agree that 10 is a bit too much, I was more referring to the fact that initiatives like PC Ports, Expansion into service games were all greenlit before the current CEO took over. The author of this article is misinformed in regards to that. But such kinds of clickbait articles is nothing new for push square and only serves as cannon fodder for the " I hate GAAS crowd".
@Sakai Surely you must know by now, 3 years into the generation that the PS Studios branding is given for both First party devs and also third party devs with whom Sony are collaborating? Death Stranding 2 is a first party title, just see the trailer, it has the PS Studios branding on it. And Rise, Stellar Blade and Lost Soul Aside literally has Sony's own publishing arm XDEV working on them. This is the lineup for PS Studios heading into 2024.
@Sakai Wait, Wolverine , Death Stranding 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and Lost Soul Aside are " all live service garbage"? last I checked , these were all single player games being published by SIE. I understand it is quite popular to hate on live service , but to pretend like Sony have nothing in the pipeline besides live service is beyond hilarious to me.
@Rmg0731 @art_of_the_kill Lol wut? Much before Ryan took over, Shawn Layden and Yoshida frequently talked about how their multiplayer game offerings were scarce and they would expand it coming into the PS5 generation. Not to mention studios like Naughty Dog and Guerilla began hiring for multiplayer roles as early as 2018, long before Ryan even took over.
It is hilarious how no one bothers to check that their " favourite execs " like Layden made the push for live service. Just look up a few of his interviews when he was in charge. Jim Ryan only expanded upon the strategies that were already laid out by previous management. Amazing how despite all of the publicly available info out there, some people still choose to look at only their pov just to fit their own delusional narrative.
Shawn Layden and Shu Yoshida closed so many damn talented studios during their tenure: Studio Liverpool( The Legendary Psygnosis) Evolution Cambridge Studio Zipper The closure of Evolution hurts the most because they were imho, the best in the business when it comes to arcade racers. Imagine a new Motorstorm or Driveclub 2 on PS5. You will see Jim Ryan get flack for lame reasons but these two execs are never criticized just because some wore Crash Tshirts on stage.
@Texan_Survivor Clearly some of you have been overdosing on the Phil Spencer kool-aid ,good lord. Who actually cares if a company's CEO is a certified "GAMER"or not. His job was never to pander to gamers to twitter, wear gamer t-shirts and all that nonsense but just to run a company efficiently which is what he's been doing all these years.
This obsession with Corpo Execs to be everyone's "friend" is just so bizzare.
@thefourfoldroot1 Has Sony moved away from smaller AA Japnese games? Sure, but that move didn't happen overnight under Jim Ryan. Andrew House, Shawn Layden and Shu Yoshida were all pretty much responsible for the decline of the Japan Studio brand since the start of the PS3 gen, their output during that time and the PS4 lifecycle was abysmal compared to the PS1 and the PS2 gens. Ryan was not in charge of Sony then, he was head of SCEE. Sony never gave Japan Studio a big enough budget like their western devs, under marketed their games ( Gravity Rush 2 and Puppeteer are prime examples of this).
The censorship also happened under previous mangement, not under Ryan. Hell, Ryan even greenlit the PS indies initiative which made it possibles for indie devs all over the world to submit and certify their games hassle-free without the regional restrictions in the past.
Also keep in mind that PS5 launched in Japan at the same time as everywhere else, unlike the PS4 which launched 3 months later after its worldwide release.
@Rob_230 Playstation never shifted away from the Japanese market, only Jpan studio was restructed as it was heavily mismanaged under previous CEO'S . Also Japan Studio was not why Playstation was succesful in Japan in the first place, it was always due to third parties. Sony invested heavily in multiplayer in the PS3 gen, stopped in the PS4 days, but again Shawn Layden and Shuhei Yoshida reiterated several times that they would again expand into multiplayer games in the PS5 gen. None of these policies were specifically greenlit under Ryan.
Honestly, some of you should do a basic research first; a so- called playstation enthusiast website where many people don't even know what they are waffling on about most of the time.
As usual so many clueless folks keep blaming Jim Ryan for things that were well decided before his tenure even began. Japan Studio was mismanaged under two " beloved" execs like Shawn Layden and Shu Yoshida. Live Services game plan was discussed frequently by Layden during last generation with an expansion planned in the PS5 gen. At the very least Jimbo orchestrated several expansion plans that should secure the future for PS:, Indies, PS Productions, gradual expansion on other platforms. I wish him nothing but the best of luck in his future endeavours 👍.
@Tomato_Goose But the Ps4 became a must buy with only the release of Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 which were released in year 2 & 3 respectively. By comparison PS5 has had a much better library in its 3 years, not to mention several high profile third party exclusives that PS4 was lacking in its early years. We also have a pretty good idea of what's on the horizon: Wolverine ( reportedly targetting late 2024) DS2 Stellar Blade Rise of The Ronin Lost Soul Aside Helldivers 2 Concord FF7 Rebirth Silent Hill 2 Granblue Fantasy Relink. Many of these games are already targeting a 2024 window.
@Toot1st, Horizon: Call of the Mountain which I listed is a full fledged first party game for PSVR2 that Firesprite released this year. Horizon Burning Shores on the other hand, is specifically a DLC which I didn't even bother to mention. Maybe do some basic research eh?
@PlaystationGamer3919.... Helldivers 2 and Concord are both stated for 2024, Death Stranding 2 release date will probably be 2024, and Rise of the Ronin also has a 2024 window.
@mariomaster96 " People say there aren't reasons enough to buy a PS5" lmao what people? The forum dwellers on enthusiast sites like these who keep crying 24*7 at just about everything? Lol.
Look at the real world pal, PS5 is the best selling console this generation and is on track to outsell PS4. And while yes, some exclusives have launched on PC, many of those games also released first on PS5.
@Tomato_Goose Sony will have released 3 first party games in 2023- Horizon: Cotm , Firewall ultra and Spiderman 2. Sure if you only like AAA, then there's only spidey. But to say Sony have released nothing this year is factually incorrect.
So PS5 crossed the 4m mark in Japan faster than PS4, PS3 AND Vita. Hope this trend continues . @Cashews FF7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Lost Soul Aside and Wolverine and DS 2 are all supposedly launching next year .. That's a drought?? Total lifetime sales of PS5 will easily cross 120 million, no chance it tops out at 80-90 lmao.
@Deshalu Sony didn't spend around 76 bn total to acquire 2 giant third party publishers in the last 3 years bud. Third party exclusives were a thing Microsoft did in the past as well as acquire a ton of individual studios , not to mention Nintendo frquently does third party exclusives too.
Hilarious how console war rhetoric has warped some of y'all minds to think that only sony is behind it all.
@IAmAshCohen17 None of it was happening on the scale that we are seeing now. Sony, Microsoft and Tencent were all acquiring individual studios. Microsoft only started acquiring publishers because they are unable to " compete " with sony and nintendo.
@Friendly I love how you repeatedly discount psvr2 games " as it is expensive" but then complain about no vr support for next year .
I just mentioned a bunch of studios who are making single player games and all your takeaway was that the majority of upcoming games are live service when it's in fact a mixture of the two.
Goes on to prove my point how you are close minded and see only your viewpoint as being correct 👍
@Friendly It sounds like you are deliberately being obtuse just to fit your own stupid narrative. I mentioned horizon:cotm just released earlier this year . Helldivers 2 and firewall ultra will release later these year as well. All these are literally Playstation studios games ( first party titles). Have you even seen the trailers for any of these games lmao??.
2nd party titles literally mean that the studio is never owned by the publisher, but rather the publisher is actively funding, developing and marketing the game. This ain't the same as 3rd party exclusives where there's usually a contractual deal signed to have the game be exclusive to only one platform.
Sounds like you should first actually do some basic research into these topics before indulging in an argument with others.
@Friendly FF16 is not first party as it is not funded/published by Sony. Rise of the Ronin and Lost Soul Aside however are both being published and developed under SIE and both are slated for 2024. Stellar Blade doesn't have a release date yet, so it could get pushed to next year . As for the first party games , both Wolverine and DS2 were leaked sometime ago with a release window of 2024. Plus Concord just had a 2024 window given just recently. That's not to even mention heavy hitter third party exclusives like FF7 Rebirth and Silent Hill 2 which are slated to arrive next year.
@Friendly Literally every game I mentioned are first party/ second party releases. Sony's own internal publishing arm XDEV assists in these projects. As for the smaller games, the current management kickstarted the PlayStation Indies initiative. Games like Kena, Tchia, Stray, Sifu, Humanity have been extensively marketed and supported by the platform holder. Only difference is they are not first party games anymore.
@Friendly There's also Firewall ultra which is another first party VR game slated for release this year. Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Lost Soul Aside are all single player games published by Sony, in addition to Wolverine and DS2 which are ps studios games all which are probably due for release next year. It's well documented too that there are single player games in development at studios like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Insomniac, Guerrilla,Firesprite, Sucker Punch, Bend, Bluepoint, Team Asobi. There may be further games in development too at XDEV.
Hilarious how in despite of all this stuff some of you still keep crying about " Single player games are not a focus anymore" everytime some news like this comes up.
@Friendly They literally released horizon : call of the mountain this feb lol. ( and are on track to release 3 more first party games by the end of this year)
@Magnus_Selene In case you hadn't noticed this yet Sony invested a minority share into From last year, the primary purpose of which was " game development collaboration" - This was said by Hermen Hulst himself. Probably means we won't have to wait that much longer for a new game. ( it will most likely be a exclusive).
@Magnus_Selene DS2, Rise of the Ronin, Stella's Blade, Lost Soul Aside are all 1st party/2nd party titles. Plus whatever From has been cooking with Sony next , oh and there's also FF7 Rebirth + Silent Hill 2. Plus Spiderman is a huge brand in Japan too.
Someone over at Atlus / Xbox PR are making serious efforts to ensure that only 1 platform is mentioned in all these trailers. Usually other publishers mention all platforms once the game has been announced ( think MGS, Resident Evil, Street Fighter which have Sony marketing deals).
This kind of lopsided advertising goes against Sega/Atlus's PR Talk lately which has been all about releasing games on multiple platforms and increasing brand awareness of their franchises.
Another piece of big news : MS considered buying Square Enix back in 2019, I am just beginning to hate this trend of mass consolidation, what's worse is this company will probably get away with it. Sony really start to make some moves fast .
@KaijuKaiser @naruball In the high end console market , only PlayStation and Xbox are direct competitors. Xbox have a had a really poor start to the gen , this has led PS into a state of complacency so far. They have stopped communicating with the fanbase this gen, done some stupid price increases which has not sat well with some folks, the only difference was the games continue to be as good as ever .
But that changed with this showcase, Sony are not dumb , they know the majority of the fanbase wants AAA singleplayer games. But that was a no show at this event. Extremely generic live service reveals are not what anyone wants, and that too showcased only via CGI teasers. The Live service games that people actually want like Factions and Horizon Online were once again not present.
Only Insomniac have showed up properly this gen so far, also a tad worrying that the 2024 and beyond game lineup is looking barebones. I know that a lot of games are in development, single player games among them, but it's high time they actually start to properly reveal them .
@KaijuKaiser If Sony is indeed revealing games that are coming out in a few months, then why show CGI teasers for Heaven's game and Marathon, games that are not coming out until 2025/2026? . Seems extremely tonedeaf to me.
People are rightly criticising Sony, this is what happens when there is little to no competition in the console industry. The backlash would have been a lot lesser if there were more single player games announced from PS Studios. ( which is what the majority of people were expecting).
The lineup for 2024 has not yet been revealed, this showcase was supposed to do exactly that. What's coming after Spiderman 2 ? No one really knows.
The lack of first party stuff is a little bit concerning. 3 multiplayer games announced none of which look interesting, Spiderman 2 saved the day as usual. Also don't like this trend of so many indie games having a major presence at a showcase like this. Probably the worst ever showcase from PS imo. The third party stuff ( MGS, Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2) were good but such kind of announcements were too little.
@Texan_Survivor @Yosuke , The SP/MP that is referenced in this article is not being interpreted correctly. Sure, 60% mentions live service, but if you notice the graphs for Single player games, the investment into them keeps on increasing and is actually comparable with the figures of FY19 where there is a 88-12 split. Sony didn't reduce budget for single player games, but is increasing them year on year.
This article is inaccurate , which is leading people to speculate incorrectly, I guess the Push Square staff should have changed it by now but hey, wording news like this is exactly what makes them generate clicks so I am not too surprised.
As usual people getting freakd out over the 60-40 split investment into live service and single player games. If some folks actually spent some time looking at the graphs they would have noticed that investment into single player games has actually increased year-on-year from FY22. It's the live service stuff that's stacked on top of that. Also do people literally forget that it takes considerably lot more resources and money to support a multiplayer game over time as compared to a traditional " one and done" Single Player experience? Interesting that under the " New IP " section we get indirect confirmation that Bluepoint, Housemarque, Valkyrie and Firesprite are indded working on brand new games.
I think this showcase will be great, considering it's been a long time since we have seen anything. I expect great first party games and some amazing ( and exclusive) third party stuff. Even Grubb did say that this Showcase would most probably meet everyone 's lofty expectations.
@KundaliniRising333 , I get being overly negative about just everything is your whole online shtick, but do you actually enjoy anything related to gaming at all? It's never confirmed that the majority of Sony's projects are all live service, do you actually have any sources for this or you are just guessing? . They have an equal number of both single player and multiplayer stuff in the works. Also , TLOU Factions is not " live service filler" lmao, the original multiplayer mode was some of the very best of it's generation.
I still think it will be there as a "one more thing" type of annoucement , could just be confirmation that a ghost sequel is indeed in the works. It's already been 3 years since the original release though, if a sequel is targeting a 2024 release ( I personally don't think so) then we will most likely get a gameplay trailer.
Edit:
I think Sony may do what they did with Wolverine, reveal GOT 2 early just so that nothing leaks beforehand. It's either this or Santa Monica's new IP that will be a " one more thing" announcement. ( Based on Hermen's recent visit to SMS and the interesting fact that some of the Santa Monica devs retweeted the Showcase announcement.)
@thefourfoldroot1 Could be it's another VR game but I recall one of the expectations from PS VR2 internally at Sony was to have games that are both playable on console and VR. ( Think GT7, , RE 8, Hitman 3 etc)
Here's some predictions on what we will most likely see :
First Party : Spiderman 2 Release date set for Sept . Bluepoint- Brand new Single Player AAA IP TLOU Factions - Releasing Q1 2024 with open beta set for this fall Helldivers 2 from Arrowhead - Coming 2024 Twisted Metal from Firesprite - Releasing Fall 2023 First Person Shooter from Firewalk - Coming 2024 Ghost of Tsushima 2 - Coming 2025 Brand new Astro AAA game ( Compatible with both PS5 and PS VR2) - Coming 2024 Santa Monica new IP from Cory Barlog - 2025 Show closes with Marvel's Wolverine gameplay trailer - Coming 2024.
Third Party: Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake - PS5 Console Exclusive ( 2024) Silent Hill 2 Remake Release date - Q1 2024 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth First look - Coming Q1 2024 Mortal Kombat 1 - Releasing Fall 2023
So much so for " Sony doesn't believe in small games, only makes AAA games" narrative. Although Playstation Studios may have moved away from those types of games, glad to see the rest of SIE still believes in these kind of experiences.

Re: The Last of Us 2 Cost $220 Million to Make, Horizon Forbidden West Cost $212 Million
Another piece of big news :
MS considered buying Square Enix back in 2019, I am just beginning to hate this trend of mass consolidation, what's worse is this company will probably get away with it.
Sony really start to make some moves fast .

Re: PS Showcase Demonstrated Sony's Efforts to Offer 'Best and Most Varied Catalog of Games', Jim Ryan Claims
Re: PS Showcase Demonstrated Sony's Efforts to Offer 'Best and Most Varied Catalog of Games', Jim Ryan Claims
Re: Poll: Was This Sony's Best PlayStation Showcase Yet?
The lack of first party stuff is a little bit concerning. 3 multiplayer games announced none of which look interesting, Spiderman 2 saved the day as usual. Also don't like this trend of so many indie games having a major presence at a showcase like this.
Probably the worst ever showcase from PS imo.
The third party stuff ( MGS, Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2) were good but such kind of announcements were too little.
Re: Sony Aiming for At Least Two Big PS5 Exclusives Each Year Across 'Every Major Genre'
Re: Sony Aiming for At Least Two Big PS5 Exclusives Each Year Across 'Every Major Genre'
Re: Feature: Our PlayStation Showcase Predictions
I think this showcase will be great, considering it's been a long time since we have seen anything. I expect great first party games and some amazing ( and exclusive) third party stuff.
Even Grubb did say that this Showcase would most probably meet everyone 's lofty expectations.
Re: Feature: Our PlayStation Showcase Predictions
@KundaliniRising333 , I get being overly negative about just everything is your whole online shtick, but do you actually enjoy anything related to gaming at all?
It's never confirmed that the majority of Sony's projects are all live service, do you actually have any sources for this or you are just guessing? . They have an equal number of both single player and multiplayer stuff in the works.
Also , TLOU Factions is not " live service filler" lmao, the original multiplayer mode was some of the very best of it's generation.
Re: Rumour: Ghost of Tsushima 2 Not at PlayStation Showcase
@JustPlainLoco That was a fake account and not the real Cygames account lol, this was confirmed by Gematsu themselves.
Re: Rumour: Ghost of Tsushima 2 Not at PlayStation Showcase
Re: Games 'Big and Small' and 'from All Over the World' at PS Showcase
@thefourfoldroot1 Could be it's another VR game but I recall one of the expectations from PS VR2 internally at Sony was to have games that are both playable on console and VR. ( Think GT7, , RE 8, Hitman 3 etc)

Re: Sony Will Help Fund Indie Games in India as Hero Project Expands
So much so for " Sony doesn't believe in small games, only makes AAA games" narrative. Although Playstation Studios may have moved away from those types of games, glad to see the rest of SIE still believes in these kind of experiences.
