Re: Feature: Watch and Yearn - Are YouTube and Twitch Influencing Game Design?

k_andersen

Very interesting writeup, Matt Personally, I found P.T.'s lack of traditional 'interactivity' its biggest draw. I was actually able to play it, and enjoy the horror, because I wasn't trying to wrestle with systems at the same time as being absolutely terrified.

But I'm going off on a tangent. I think the questions of quality are really interesting. I remember seeing a game - I can't remember which one - which had a room that just blatantly thanked PewDiePie for playing. At the very least, you have to admire the cojones.

My experience with this game was very similar to yours, Sammy, with the only difference being that I forced a friend to play with me so that we could share the terror.

After we finished the demo, we decided to boot up Outlast to try to keep the excitement and fear going. However, we found that after playing P.T., Outlast just didn't seem scary anymore. Which is hilarious, because I found Outlast quite tense the last time I played it. I guess we'd been desensitized after the sheer unadulterated terror of P.T.

Re: Shuhei Yoshida Doesn't Understand People Who Don't Like Indie Games

@Gamer83 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like your problem is less "There are too many indie games!" and more "There are too few AAA games!" - which is a totally valid criticism. I feel like these smaller projects we've been talking about would probably be a fix for that. At the same time, though, I worry that diverting resources from the bigger games to make smaller ones, might mean that the big ones end up taking even longer. I feel like we're at this bizarre crossroads at the moment. AAA games are getting bigger and bigger, and therefore taking much more time (and money) to make. Sometimes I worry about how sustainable it is. At any rate, it'll be interesting to see how things develop.

And just to clarify, though I often come across as a bit of a pretentious AAA snob, I do enjoy a good AAA game just as much as a good indie

@SimonAdebisi I agree 100% I think Child of Light and Valiant Hearts are two great examples of a big publisher making something smaller, but with a big publisher's budget. And even something bigger than that - like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon - which looks and feels more like a typical AAA game, but is smaller, and more reasonably priced.

Re: Talking Point: Should Sony Ditch E3 Stage Shows Like Nintendo?

I definitely think Sony should take a leaf out of Nintendo's book at next year's E3. Regardless of the quality of the actual announcements (which is obviously totally subjective), the best thing about the prerecorded format was the distinct lack of horrifically awkward mishaps. It made the other 'press conferences' almost seem unprofessional by comparison. Also, if they're going to start showing these things in cinemas, it makes sense to make them a bit more polished.

And while I certainly did miss the reactions from a live audience, the twitter blow-ups that occurred during Nintendo's event were just as entertaining, and 'hype-inducing.'
