Re: PS5 Is Breaking Pre-Order Records at Some Retailers

rjc-32

@sabaki08 This exactly. This is what happened with Nvidia online store yesterday for the 3080. Bots were set up and configured and cards sold in 1.5 seconds. Other websites were also a nightmare. Sony’s approach at least gave more fans a chance to buy

Re: PS5 Pre-Orders: Where to Buy PlayStation 5

rjc-32

Sony did the right thing by allowing retailers to stagger their pre-order times, and by opening them abruptly. It minimised the impact of bots placing multiple orders. The RTX 3080 launch yesterday was a nightmare, exact time and date announced in advance allowed people to set the bots in advance, it caused absolute chaos.

I went to Argos around 10:30am today, for straight to the page, added to cart and checked out in 5 mins, painless, must’ve been one of the last because I checked a few mins later and all gone. Order confirmed. After yesterday’s nightmare with RTX 3080 this was a lucky breeze

Re: Talking Point: Is the PlayStation Store Starting to Rival Steam Sales?

rjc-32

Steam sales are no longer as legendary as they once were, thanks in large part to the refund policies they implemented (to stop people refunding purchases from just before sales/flash sales). 5/6 years ago they were awesome when they had flash sales and daily deals. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still good, however, with G2A etc you can pretty much get sale prices all year round. PlayStation sales are much better than they were, although I wish they would include more PS3/Vita games from time to time.

Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Remake Lets You Prioritise Visuals or Frame Rate

4K 60 will be too demanding for PS5 in most AAA games. For reference, with Ghost Recon Wildlands at max settings 4K I could only get around 40ish ave with a 2080TI/8086k 5GHz setup. I imagine to get 60 they will use reconstruction techniques like checkerboard etc. It’s great that they’re now able to offer this choice on console, I hope it’s available in Ratchet and Clank

Re: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Brings the Duo Back on PS5

rjc-32

@tatsumi fair enough, each to their own. I would always cut graphical settings to maximise framerates, controls are much better at 60 over 30. It’s not always that simple to just allow a “switch” between 30 and 60, particularly if game logic is tied to 30. It’s down to the devs.

Re: PS5's Backwards Compatibility with PS4 Still Has Fans Flabbergasted

rjc-32

MS holds most of the aces, they have the most powerful hardware, unparalleled BC and the excellent value game pass service. Complete this with a fully transparent reveal. Sony have their exclusives and SSD speed. The Cerny reveal should’ve come after a full hardware reveal, complete with explosive gameplay footage and the actual console/controller. It’s a PR mess.

Re: Guide: Is PS5 Backwards Compatible with PS4 Games?

rjc-32

PS2 and PS3 emulation is incredibly CPU intensive. Even with my 8086k running at 5ghz in all cores with HT there are plenty of small issues (and some large) with most games on both PS2 and 3 emus. These kinds of issues would not be acceptable in a consumer product. IPC data is not available for these chips yet but the clock frequencies don’t seem fast enough. Maybe I’m wrong, but if they had it working for launch they’d be shouting about it right now. Possibly they would have to do the BC on a game by game basis, like PS2 classics and Xbox BC.

Re: Sony Reiterates PS5 Features at CES 2020 Press Conference

@Agramonte The cryengine implementation of ray tracing is performed entirely in software mode, which is why it will run across a wide range of GPU setups. Even if the consoles are using a form of hardware accelerated RT I doubt we’ll be seeing the same kind of performance as a high end RTX GPU. AMD has yet to show any progress with RT and there is also the fact that consoles will be £500 or less.

Re: PS4 Is Closing in on 100 Million Units Sold, and It's Inline with the All-Conquering PS2

rjc-32

Sony could quite easily surpass the 155m units of the PS2 if they target additional markets, particularly those with emerging economies, with the PS4 once PS5 has released. The system can be revised further to cut down on production costs and can be sold very cheap. When PS5 is released there will be plenty of countries around the world where spending 400+ on a console would be infeasible. A cheap PS4 will be far more attractive, particularly with the large library of games available. There will also be a crossover period of at least 2 years where many games will be released for both systems.

Re: Ex-PlayStation Executive: Google Stadia Starts Inevitable Shift Away from Consoles

I'm sure the all streaming future will happen eventually, albeit over a lengthy period of time. I remember using dial up internet just 20 years ago, could never have envisioned the speeds we have nowadays back then so in another 20 years I'm sure infrastructures will have changed dramatically. Just like Horses and carts, oil lanterns, high street shops, analogue broadcasting etc, consoles will eventually become obsolete. Everything evolves. Personally I'd give up gaming moving forward, there's a big enough backlog to keep me going. Future generations will embrace it because they'll know no different.
It will be the manufacturers and publishers dream for a future like this; total control and no resales/piracy.
