Re: PS5 Game Boost Trailer Raises Eyebrows

rjc-32

Uncharted 4 should be doable since the engine already functions at 60fps in the multiplayer. I imagine CPU limitations stopped it being run at 1080p60 on the Pro so surely now they can get this going on the PS5, even if they have to cut the resolution back.

Re: PS4 Clock Battery Problem Proven, But Don't Panic Right Now

rjc-32

Well I would be almost certain that the PS5 will have this issue too, the PS3 is also subject to it. I would hazard a guess that you’ll still be able to access the PSN server to authenticate the time in future, so long as PSN is still a thing. The authentication server likely accepts requests from all devices (PS3,4,5 etc) and responds accordingly. There would be nothing saved by removing access to a particular device to make these requests. Nothing would be stopping them from doing this, just seems unlikely to me.

Re: PS4 Owners Are Worried Their Games Won't Work if a Clock Battery Fails

rjc-32

The PS4 uses a common CR2032 battery, easily replaced, no soldering required either. Sure, you’ll have to tear down your console but in 20 years time I don’t see that being an issue. You can replace the thermal paste at the same time because that will be due also. By then the console will most likely be fully hacked to the point where the server handshake will be a non-issue also.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy a PS1, PS2, or PS3 Emulator for PS5?

rjc-32

I’d buy the classic games again for PS5 individually if:

1. They released each game with their own bespoke version of the emulator, like what MS do

2. The games were released physically, with the entire content on a disc that doesn’t require a day one update

Unless both of those two points were met I wouldn’t bother. No way I’d purchase anything digital. I still have original PS1, PS2 and PS3 consoles hooked up so can play the games on those. But having re-releases on PS5 would be nice, especially for rarer titles that have become more expensive.

Obviously I know my idea will never happen so I will continue to use original hardware.

Re: PS3, PS Vita, and PSP Online Stores to Close This Summer, Says New Report

rjc-32

@deathgaze738 Yeah that’s the worry. Some games, GT6 for example, are massively different on the latest patch when compared with vanilla code. In years to come you may never be able to access many features if you wanted to go back and replay/play for first time as retro etc.

As soon as consoles become all-digital I will no longer buy new platforms. There will be a lifetime of games already available. I’m thinking only Nintendo will continue with physical at the next generation.

Re: PS3, PS Vita, and PSP Online Stores to Close This Summer, Says New Report

rjc-32

This is why I condone piracy.

On a side note, I wonder if this will have any implications to the update/patch servers for physical PS3 & Vita games. Many games have multiple patches and if these have not been installed you’ll only be stuck with vanilla code for physicals in future if these servers are also switched off. Many games would be worse off as a result, GT6 instantly springs to mind.

Also there’s trophies. I would hazard a guess that trophies for PS3 games would remain due to PS3 games being on PS Now, the system would need to stay active for those games. But what about trophies for vita games?

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Hovers Around 720p on PS4, Drops As Low As 15FPS

rjc-32

What do you expect from mid-range hardware from circa 2011/12 (I know PS4 released in 2013 but hardware was established prior to this). Should’ve been canned for current gen and released next Summer once they actually completed optimisation. Obviously business decisions prevailed... which I can understand from the perspective but definitely not worth buying yet.

Re: Something Is Amiss with Sony's Secret San Diego Studio

rjc-32

@ILikeStake The first 3 were more "corridor" based shooters, you'd almost always have cover and could clear enemies and be safe behind you, this compensated for the laggy controls/framerate. 4 was more "open world" style (in each area), I found that you got surrounded more often and the motion/controls were very laggy, made parts frustratingto play. Ratchet and clank on PS4 was the same, the PS2 versions are far superior. I'm glad this generation is finally giving the option to choose framerates or fidelity, keeps both sides happy.

Re: Something Is Amiss with Sony's Secret San Diego Studio

rjc-32

@ILikeStake Yeah, 4 was clunky to play and wasn't as enjoyable. The open areas would play better at a higher framerate. Not really bothered for a new one either, won't be the same without Nathan. I'd actually prefer to see Naughty Dog create a new IP, with a cartoon/platformer style akin to Jak.

Re: A PS5 Firmware Update Will Add VRR Support in the Future

rjc-32

@morrisseymuse VRR is there to eliminate tearing that is present without VSync enabled, and to eliminate the judder that occurs when Vsync is enabled and the target framerate is not kept.

VRR will not “convert” lower frame rates to the target, but it will work in sync with the display relative to whatever framerate the GPU/Console is outputting at a given time. Let’s say your console outputs 104fps, your screen will work at 104hz at this moment, so you won’t get the judder that would occur if your screen was working at 120hz while the GPU was outputting 104fps. The smoothness is the removal of this judder.

From your example, devil may cry outputting 100fps, VRR would tell the screen to work at 100hz at this moment. That’s why VRR is important where framerate fluctuations occur.

Re: A PS5 Firmware Update Will Add VRR Support in the Future

rjc-32

@morrisseymuse That’s the whole point of VRR, to compensate for dropped frames. The display will constantly be in sync with the number of frames that are output from the source device. This will result in a smoother presentation. Once you’ve used it you won’t want to go back to fixed rate displays.

Re: PS5 Pre-Orders from Some Retailers May Not Be Fulfilled Until 2021

rjc-32

@render Same here, my text came a couple of days later but it confirmed the delivery date on the 19th. Weirdly I got my pre-order around 10:30am on the Friday they went on sale, supposedly they’d sold out by then but maybe some cards got declined etc so units were reallocated for sale. Argos also did another round of orders so I’m sure the initial wave will be guaranteed for the 19th.

Re: PS5 Pre-Orders: Where to Buy PlayStation 5

rjc-32

I managed to get my pre-order at Argos last Friday morning around 10:30am, no hassle, just logged in when I woke up and checked straight out. I wonder if they "restocked" orders that were cancelled due to payments bouncing or people not completing checkouts etc, when I checked again a few mins later they showed as sold out. Always worth checking the websites a few hours after the "sold out" signs appear as these restocks can happen. Anyway it's confirmed, even got a text a few days later to confirm release date delivery. Sold my Pro for £230 this week so just a £220 upgrade not too bad, although there is no game I want at launch, waiting for Ratchet and GT7 so will be used for PS4 games until then.

Re: Looks Like Assassin's Creed Valhalla Will Be 60FPS, 4K on PS5

rjc-32

I’d rather see options for dynamic 1440p pushing for that 120hz target. Games feel much better to play at 120, input lag is reduced and motion clarity is improved dramatically. When my 3080 eventually comes I will run at 1440p 120hz this gen, with all the RT options even getting to 120 at 1440p Will be a challenge. With the PS5 I will enable performance/framerate priority mode for every game that supports it.
