Re: Microsoft Bigwig Implies PS5 Is Losing Marketshare to Xbox

Apfelschteiner

@mucc Also, is no one even going to consider the product and marketing of the Xbone was so incredibly bad that it inflated the numbers of people playing their cross-gen games on PS4? They had a console that was way more expensive and was more focussed on being a TV box than a games machine an X box can be whatever you want it to be, but a play station is clearly for games. In terms of games Microsoft still doesn't have a really attractive product, but in terms of ease of use and value. The Xbox is well positioned or at least not as obviously inferior as the last generation.

Re: Rumour: PS Plus PS5, PS4 Games for May 2022 Leaked Early

@Scob I'm from North Essex, and my Dad started taking me to watch Ipswich as Southend didn't have children's tickets and he was fond of Ipswich from the Robson days. I've only ever had one team. My Dad's still a season ticket holder, but I live abroad. I still try to get to at least one match a season.

@shadow2k FIFA 98 road to world cup was awesome. There was an indoor mode and you could set no cards, no substitues. I have a fond memory of playing as England vs Germany and injuring all their players with horrible tackles and playing a long match. Even so, we probably still couldn't beat them!

Re: March 2022 NPD: PS5 Stock Problems Put Sony in Last Place

Apfelschteiner

@UltimateOtaku91 At the same time though, Xbox is firmly focused on the budget gamer with game pass and none of their games are exclusive to the new console. Xbox also has a really good upgrade system, so people can continue with their old Xbox until the new ones are available. There is very little incentive for PS4 owners to buy an Xbox just to get in on the next generation when the new generation on xbox is just graphics and SSD.

Re: March 2022 NPD: PS5 Stock Problems Put Sony in Last Place

Apfelschteiner

On a personal level the supply constraints only affect people who haven't got a PS5 yet. Some lucky people have had one since launch. I got one last week. My perception is that there is no real problem with supply. The reality is that until we see consoles on shelves in our local shops, there is still a supply issue. I think (hope) that after God of War all games will be PS5 exclusive. I hoped that all games would have been exclusive to PS5 even when I didn't have one, because it makes games better and we can all get round to them eventually.

I played this on Switch. I had a great time, but it feels like it doesn't quite reach its potential. If it were expanded upon with some more engaging puzzles it could have been truly great. The length and complexity make it quite obvious that it was a mobile game. There is no platinum for this game, so I have no motivation to go back to it. Maybe I would if it were free on PS+.

Re: Talking Point: What PS Plus Games for PS5, PS4 in May 2022 Do You Want?

Apfelschteiner

For me to play games on PS+ they either have to be short quality games or games that I have been thinking of getting round to like Ghostrunner. I'm fine with buying most games in the sale, because the developers deserve some money if the game is worth my time.
The best PS+ games are the ones that introduce you to something new. Telltale's the Walking Dead got me interested in all Telltale games and all Walking Dead TV shows. I really appreciate the PS5 overcooked game, as I already paid for 1 and 2 and all the DLC and I don't want to pay again just for the upgrade. Ghostrunner was also a game that I wanted to play.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@themightyant The difference is those games are old and if I wanted to play them enough I would have played them by now. I don't see the value of old games if there isn't any effort to update them. I hate the idea of just dumping as many games on the service as possible. I only care for a curated list of games and if it isn't worth going in and adding trophies, it really isn't worth putting them on the service and certainly isn't worth my time. I'm not really that interested in playing old games, and definitely not in their original form. I would probably try out an old game or two and sign up to the premium tier for one month to check it out if the games had basic quality of life improvements such as trophies.
Of course games are worth playing in their own right, but I love having the trophy record of the games I played. I'd only play the retro games out of curiosity, but if Sony wants me to play these games they better put in the effort to do small things to make them playable.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

@thefourfoldroot The problem I have with Yakuza games is that they are so time-consuming, although Yakuza is my favourite series of all time. I love it like a son though and I lament that it is not reaching its potential. I really think Ryu ga Gotoku studio have the story-telling chops to be the Japanese equivalent of Naughty Dog, but they just don't have the budget or technical expertise.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@add286 Just turn off the trophy notifications and you are fine. Switch would be way better with trophy support and you could just turn them off too. I don't like the concept of gamerscore because I like the concept of the trophies being particular to one game, also there is inevitably going to be inconsistency between trophy list difficulty levels.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@thefourfoldroot That was from 5 years ago. I don't know if Sony's patent for automatic trophies makes that process easier. Even so, it's not a huge undertaking for a company of Sony's size even if it is a little complicated to add trophies. It's worth the energy as they will be playable going forward in perpetuity.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@daveofduncan I'm talking about full-price games like if HFW didn't have trophies. How's that a ridiculous take?! It's my own choice and value that I assign. You are free to think differently.
When I finish the story of a game, then for me I consider that to be the end. If the trophies are worth going for then that is maybe another 10-20 hours of a game. That is easily worth a tenner!

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@WexMajor If most people can't tell the difference between 30 frames and 60 frames, it doesn't really affect the gameplay. The framerate only affects the gameplay in very precise games. "the act of collecting digital trophies should have no influence on whether or not someone buys a game or enjoys a game", well that's totally subjective and you are discounting the entire aspect of collectibles in games. Trophies are just an aspect of gaming like graphics, controls, fidelity, story, and gameplay. You will get people arguing that games don't need story etc.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@meistergeister Trophies can be added automatically and checked and fixed by a programmer. It's really not that complicated to set 40 triggers in a game for things that are already being measured. Sony should be looking at this as the start of their ongoing back catalogue and it's worth doing it right, even if that means gradually adding the games once they have optimized the frame rate, textures, etc. There is a reason why games get remade, and that is because the vast majority don't want to play games as they were when they released.

Re: Syphon Filter Games Rated, Likely for PS Plus Premium

Apfelschteiner

@WexMajor Some people care about 60 frames per second that they won't play games at 30. Whether a game has trophies or not is not a purchasing decision, because all games have to have them. If Horizon FW didn't have trophies, would I still buy it? Probably yes, but I'd expect it to be a tenner cheaper. If Nintendo did trophies, I would seriously consider getting a Switch as my kids are really into Mario.

Re: Poll: As God of War Turns Four, What Would You Rate It Today?

Apfelschteiner

@Flaming_Kaiser Sorry to hear that. I had the main spoiler (I think) spoiled for me. It pissed me off, not because of the story choice, but because I didn't get to experience it. Actually, that story was a mess even though it was aiming for the stars, it even had me thinking that it might actually pull it off. It was a game of great set pieces that didn't add up to a coherent whole.

Re: Poll: As God of War Turns Four, What Would You Rate It Today?

Apfelschteiner

@lolwhatno I got the last of us remastered with my PS4 without knowing anything about it. It was a pleasant surprise, whereas my experience with God of War was the opposite. It was hyped up so much that it was a major disappointment. I'm really not that interested in hearing people talk about games once they are out. It's so much better to experience them myself. Once I'm done with them, I love going back to the spoilercasts.

Re: Poll: As God of War Turns Four, What Would You Rate It Today?

Apfelschteiner

@themightyant Most of the game was great like you said. I really wonder if I was in the wrong frame of mind because I found the game a bit bloated with the worlds blending into one. It was a pain to get around, the game was too long, and there was a whole loot system that felt tacked on and superfluous.
I'm going to have to play it again, because I do remember really enjoying the father and Son aspect and Freya. The main villain was annoying and the opening fight was incredibly dull because the guy is invincible.
If I don't enjoy it enough, I'll just skip Ragnarok, or wait for it to be free on PS+.
