Re: Sony's Bungie Buyout to Be Investigated by the FTC

Richnj

Legal scrutiny is good though.

And these buyout investigations don't happen because of game exclusivity, they happen because of competition. If one company bought up all the competition and kept the games multiplatform, your only choice of video game provider would still be that one company.

Re: Hands On: Sifu's New Difficulty Settings are a Superb Addition

Richnj

@Gelly "I just wish people like you wouldnt cross over to game styles you dont like"

Liking something and being good at something are not the same thing.

"Comparing it to subtitles for hearing impaired is not the same dude lmao. That is a disability."

Yeah, and you are conveniently ignoring what I said about the dropped curb. Easier difficulties help disabled people. Maybe like Adhd, or learning disabilities, or anything that effects reflexes. In both instances you are excluding disabled people.

"there will be companies that believe that the core of the game is its difficulty and stick to that."

But this is how we know you don't really care about a Dev's vision, and actually only care about your gatekeeping, because this Dev expanded their game and you aren't defending them making the game they want, you are upset that this thing you thought was yours, is no longer exclusively for you.

Re: Hands On: Sifu's New Difficulty Settings are a Superb Addition

Richnj

@Gunnerzaurus You not buying the game when it's "made for you" is probably why they've made the game more accessible for the people "it's not made for".

@Gelly Counterpoint: Having an easy mode does not stop this game having harder difficulties, and therefore, is still for you. And arguing that certain games aren't for certain people, is like arguing that games don't need subtitles because those games just aren't for the hearing impaired.

Having difficulty options, like having subtitles, or colorblind options, changes the way a game can be experienced, to be more enjoyable for those that need those options, but does not stop others from taking those off and experiencing the game the "way it was intended".

It's a dropped curb. You and me may have zero problems with stepping up a raised curb, and have no need for dropped curbs, but the disabled, prams, elderly, kids, cars, cyclists, or whatever, benefit from their existence.

So let's not gatekeep experiences under the guise of "purity".

Re: Sony Confirms PS Plus Subscription Stacking Has Been Blocked

Richnj

On-brand

Honestly though, letting people get away with this now, would have gave the service a massive boost in subs early on, through out what will no doubt be a rocky start, and give you more time to convince people to stay, ultimately being good for the service in the long term.

But you know, I guess Sony knows they can do whatever and the core audience will pay the money anyway.

Re: British Gas Blasted for Advising Customers to Turn Off Consoles Like PS5, PS4

Richnj

@Toypop I was talking about this with my partner the other day. We both work in the hospital and her department has asked them all to send less emails, because it actually costs more electricity-wise.

In short I complained about how we built a digital society, and are afraid of using electricity. While all these companies are building an always online metaverse to replace our real lives, they tell us we can't use as much electricity. It's absurd.

So you have companies building an all digital future, and refused to get off fossil fuels for decades, because it's what makes them money, but no, it's our fault for using them.

Re: Looks Like Sony Is Hiring for a 'Newly Created Game Preservation Team'

Richnj

This will most definitely be a back end thing.

The day of the tentacle had a climate controlled unit with original art and recordings stored in it. And these were eventually used to help create the remaster. This is most likely what this means, in some form or another.

It means very little to the customer unless the studio does a remaster, in which case, it's a damn sight better than what Konami did.

update "In very basic terms, preservation is the process of ensuring all aspects of a game and its creation are not only archived properly, but kept in a state in which it could feasibly be restored and brought back in the future."

So it's exactly what I said then.

Re: Borderlands 3 on PS5, PS4 Will Join the Crossplay Party Very Soon

Richnj

@PhhhCough Do you mean Wonderlands or Dragon's Keep?

Because Wonderlands already has it, it's actually a reason why BL3 is getting it now.

And I doubt Dragon's Keep will get it. The game doesn't even have 4 player split screen, when the Handsome Collection does. I don't think they care much about that stand alone release.

Re: Sony Experimenting with Ads in Free-to-Play PS5, PS4 Games

Richnj

@REALAIS My problem with this is that by constantly trying to blame the consumers, you are doing a lot of dismissing of the actual behaviour of companies.

They put a lot of money, time, and effort in to targeting and conditioning players that will spend more money than that person would otherwise.

Trying to say "they just see numbers" Ignores the effort they go to to get those numbers.

Whales didn't just become the defacto customer, companies identified them as prime money spenders and catered their games for them. And that's how you end up with GT7.

Re: Video: Is Live Service Really the Way Forward for PlayStation?

Richnj

"Are things always better with friends?"

MP and Live Service are two different things. You can have a MP title without a live service model and you can have a single player title with a live service model.

And while I agree that the live service model overwhelming favours a MP title, don't conflate the two.

Re: Death Stranding Added to PlayStation Studios Banner, Probably Isn't What It Looks Like

Richnj

Honestly, as a lot of these legacy devs come closer to retirement age, it makes more sense that they sell off their studo to a big player for stock options in the parent company.

If they just passed their studio on to someone else, they could run that studio in to the ground and your investment and hard work is just gone. Sell it to a platform holder and even if your studio closes, you still have a thriving investment.

I'd imagine this is why we've seen so many big independent companies embrace first party life.

Re: The Ascent Update Actually Disables Cross-Play Between PS5 and PS4

Richnj

@TheRedComet @Jaz007 An easy fix for this would be to have an option toggle that's set to locked 30fps by default, but also allows for locked 60fps, locked 120fps, and unlocked. It would give the player the choice of what kind of experience they want, and future proof the game for better hardware. (You could just have 30, 60, and unlocked I guess).

If I remember correctly, Bioshock on the PS3 had a frame rate option, and that game is like 15 years old at this point. It's kinda weird it's not more common today.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

Richnj

@Oz_Momotaro In terms of content and design, yeah, they are still the same.

The OP didn't specify what they meant by "outdated", because there's two interpretations.

One is that the designs of older games do not match today's, but then we can clearly see that remasters and new itirations do not change this and people still love them.

The other is that the general performance isn't good enough, which is a valid point, and remasters fix this (normally) but not all games get a remaster. But people are still playing on Switches, and the XBox BC games get massively boosted frame rate and resolution.

Look at the God of War, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, Infamous, and Little Big Planet. Or third party titles like Lost Planet, Dead Space, RDR 1, Rage, Oblivion, and the Splinter Cell games. The Former are just not getting remasters, at all. All of the latter, no remasters, but are available on xbox through the BC program. Yes, I'd prefer a remaster, but in the absence of that, I'd very much take BC than not have those games at all.

It just seems like an odd dismissal of BC of older games, to call them outdated and pretty much unplayable, and advocate to not have any version of them at.

Re: PS3 Emulation Allegedly in Production for PS5

Richnj

@Luigia Yeah definitely, that would be awesome.

My son has been playing the Spongebob squared game on xbox, and having a lot of fun with it.

And I'd rather he played old titles like that than something like Roblox that is constantly asking if he wants to buy in game credits.

Re: PS3 Emulation Allegedly in Production for PS5

Richnj

@TheRedComet I think if they were going to remaster old titles, they would have fully commited to doing that on the PS4. There was nothing stopping them already doing that. They clearly just don't want to bring their PS1-3 titles forward in a remastered form unless it's to fill a content gap. (AKA the Nintendo approach)

The supposed reason for not having PS3 BC was that the PS4 wouldn't handle it, but now with the power of the PS5, a lot of people seem to think it's viable now. Which would presumably be why it's being looked in to.

Re: PS3 Emulation Allegedly in Production for PS5

Richnj

@Resi32 Don't worry, I played it on 360 first. I really enjoyed my experience there and earned all the achievements, and that is why I wanted to play it on PS3 and get the plat. I did finish Fallout 3, New Vegas and Skyrim on PS3 but they weren't pleasant experiences.

Coincedentally, I'm currently playing the Anniversary edition of Skyrim on PS4. Shall plat it again, and I'm definitely having a much better time.

Re: PS3 Emulation Allegedly in Production for PS5

Richnj

@LN78 @nessisonett Skyrim was the game that offed my Phat BC PS3. Broke my heart.

And if you think Skyrim was bad, do not even attempt New Vegas. The dam quest was never ending. My stubborn ass was too commited to getting the plat to stop at that point.

Re: Fake Metal Gear Solid Website Debunked by Konami

Richnj

“We’re currently considering how to deal with this site,”

Funny, I thought exploiting Konami franchises to sell NFTs was something Konami was in favour of.

Or maybe this is just the Nintendo defense and they are just protecting the value of their IPs by having zero plans to offer these games through legal marketplaces until they become desperate for content to sell.

Re: Rumour Mill Points to 'Really Big' Sony Acquisition, But It's Just Speculation

Richnj

@Floki The Konami game dev side is so messed up that that's kinda why I keep wanting them bought up.

The price would be quite low and there's so much room for Sony to improve it. I'd much rather that than Sony buy up someone else and either make a solid publisher exclusive, or keep them multiplatform and effectively make no change.

The only reason I supported MS buying Bethy and Acti was because they had been structurally a mess for a long time and I'm hoping that this changes going forward.

Re: Tiny Tina's Wonderlands (PS5) - Borderlands Fantasy Spin-Off Can't Quite Find the Magic

Richnj

@johncalmc Butt Stallion isn't just a dumb joke though ( yes, it was a dumb joke to begin with). Not at this point. It's a long standing reference now.

Firstly, Butt Stallion is connected to the two most immature characters of the series. Handsome Jack (who named her) and Tiny Tina (a literal 9 year old). It would be weird (and poor writing) if both these characters spouted out mature dry British wit.

Secondly, because Butt Stallion is the creation of Handsome Jack, and he use to be considered a highlight of the series, it would be weird now, if all of a sudden, people were against this style of humour and in this form, when he introduced it.

And Thirdly, as mentioned above and in my other post, having Butt Stallion as not just connected to Tiny Tina but acting as the Queen of her fantasy world is well established. It seems highly unlikely that anyone playing Wonderlands, who is familiar, would not really be disappointed by that announcement. They wouldn't take it as some poorly landed joke, they'd take it as the continued reference that it is.

I'm sure there's plenty of actual dumb jokes here, and that any one of them would have been a better example than Butt Stallion. Using a different joke would have been equally effective for both new and old players of the series. Using BS only really persuades those that either do not have that familiarity and those that already hated it. It also just reads as a misunderstanding or lack of prior knowledge of that line.

Re: Tiny Tina's Wonderlands (PS5) - Borderlands Fantasy Spin-Off Can't Quite Find the Magic

Richnj

@Cutmastavictory My god, you're right.

"Humour is an incredibly subjective thing; while we were sat like Will Smith at a Chris Rock gig as Tiny Tina proudly announces the Queen in the game is a magical horse named "Butt Stallion""

Butt Stallion is mentioned and featured in BL2 main game, and its two latter DLCs, one of which was Dragon Keep, which was recently released as a stand alone game (the game that is only £7.99, has been half price several times and has been free through PSN+), and it's revealed in that game that BS is the Queen.

So why is this written like it was a surprise and the reviewer didn't like it? This feels like the Alan Wake review all over again.

Re: Sony's Cloud Streamed PS3 Games Are Causing a Storm on Social Media

Richnj

@K1LLEGAL I went back and finally completed Far Cry Instincts the other month. I had two left to get and just never bothered. Had the random urge to go for them, booted up the game, spent a couple of hours, and got both. Ten plus years apart. Same save file. Same game. 100% completed now. It's not the first time I've done this (though this is the biggest time gap in between the last and most recent earned achievements) and it won't be the last.

It's a thing I just can't explain how good it felt to do. Something I know won't work with this subscription services.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

Richnj

@Wasted_Smuggler I don't think people in general find these games as outdated as you. You have games like GTA, Minecraft, Fifa, and COD being the most played games on most platforms, and two of those are PS3 games, and the other two haven't changed since the PS3.

I know I don't find these games unplayable even if things do feel dated. Lately I've been playing Skyrim and RE4 (again, PS3 games) and some of their quirkiness is exactly what I enjoy about them. Then there's the other hand where many of today's games' designs haven't actually evolved much since the PS3 days. One of the biggest differences is resolution and overall image quality and I find that to be a rather superficial complaint. It would be like preferring the Meg over Jaws because the former has a better looking shark.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

Richnj

@Wasted_Smuggler

"They are just so outdated, you can get a quick dose of nostalgia out of it for an hour but guarantee you won’t last a few hours before quitting. This is why they make remasters/remakes."

I spent the entire year of 2020 catching up on and finishing PS3 games.

Wouldn't it make more sense that the reason they make remasters and remakes is because people actually still want to play these games?

And wasn't the big game for the PS5 launch, a PS3 remake?

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

Richnj

"the official confirmation was poorly conceived and has shaped the narrative you see online, which is largely negative."

My negative opinion of it wasn't shaped by the delivery of the message, but the content, in this case, the fact that the legacy library is locked behind a paywall.

If the legacy titles were also accessible through paid downloads and discs, I'd be completely happy with the rest of the PS+ packages.

Re: Random: Ratchet & Clank's Rivet Was Nearly Also Named Ratchet

Richnj

@Apfelschteiner And has MS Pac-Man ever separated herself from her connection from Pac-Man? No. It's in the name. That connection is built in by design.

Imagine if they had called the character of Xena, 'Her-cules'. Do you honestly think this name would have been just as good, and not at all considered a joke and demeaning to the character?

Re: Random: Ratchet & Clank's Rivet Was Nearly Also Named Ratchet

Richnj

Ratchette would be fine in a parody context, but in a more serious context it would be completely outdated and laughable.

Being a 2D gender swap would be demeaning. Giving the character her own unique name and fleshed out story differentiates the character and turns them from being dumb tropes in to actually likeable characters.

"Ratchette" would always be stuck under Ratchet's shadow

Re: Gran Turismo 7 Currency Rewards to Be Increased Following Player Backlash

Richnj

@TheArt I've never understood this "vocal minority" narrative. For 1) everybody is online today. 2) There's a reason companies spend millions advertising online, and why reviews scores matter.

I mean, does anybody buy games because they saw it in the argos catalogue, on a TV advert, or local game store anymore? No, it's all online and word of mouth. And if the Internet word of mouth is "dis game bad" that gets spread outside of here too.

I think "vocal minority" at least in the context of video games, is just cope.
