Disco Elysium is a great RPG, added some really cool fresh ideas. If you're into your RPGs do give this one a go as it's a gem of a game. Not sure whether to buy it again or just play it on PC again. Want to support ZA/UM though.
@nessisonett agreed, I think it's the equivalent of "green wash", rubbish Corporations say to make people feel good about spending money with them. It's usually rubbish & has little actual effect on how they do business. Red Candle Games were a really promising little developer & they've had their future wrecked & cast into doubt because someone doesn't like the fact they look a bit like Winnie the Pooh. Beggars belief.
Yeah, & sadly games like Devotion by Red Candle Games are walled away from platforms & mainstream game stores because China wants to be able to sensor the rest of the world.
So it is coming out this month? That's good, I loved the game. Might pick it up again on PS4/5 given they've seemingly done a lot of extra work & I want to support them.
Arc Systems have done a bang up job with Strive. I feel like they've been really, really close to outright genius a few times, but I honestly think this might be the closest they've come yet. Fix some of the niggles people gave reported back (I wholeheartedly agree with @Gmork___ about the lobby) & they've got an absolute winner on their hands.
It's really interesting to hear that XDev were discussing bringing back an older Sony franchise like Destruction Derby. I wonder if the rumours of them sniffing out developers for WipEout amongst others is true.
Historically, the industry seems to view "launch window" as roughly 6 months. So up to mid to late May would count as launch window still.
The question then becomes is Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart going to launch by then? Given the delays to both Destruction Allstars & Returnal maybe not everything at PlayStation Studios is proceeding as planned. My bet is we'll see the rest of Sony's first party games get reshuffled. I expect everything to be pushed back s little.
@Jacko11 I'm not so sure on your timeline. The core team to build the studio was established in 2018. The recruitment agencies started head hunting and sending open invitations mid to late 2019 after a core technology team was established most likely. That'd place any game output at the very earliest at late 2022. But a more reasonable timeframe would be 2023. There's talk there's actually two projects going on there, and that they're developing their own technology / game engine.
The San Diego team was set up to "explore" the continuation of legacy franchises, either their continuation or reboot. Uncharted being such a popular franchise seems like a good candidate for such work. Sony has seen what Microsoft have tried to do with 343i and The Coalition with Halo and Gears respectively and think they can do a better job at handing established franchises off to different teams, while allowing their top tier teams to explore new ideas / franchises. It has been either a strength or an Achilles heel depending on viewpoint that Sony's first parties have generally moved on to newer IP while discarding older IP. Sony have a plethora of valuable IP just sitting around doing nothing, if they can establish new teams to take some key legacy franchises forward it could actually be a good business move.
Still slowly working my way through 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim & revisiting the excellent Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, so having a Vanillaware blow out recently.
Honestly view this as a positive thing. Give us dates when you know you're able to hit them with code that isn't janky as hell. The pressure these marketing windows create are detrimental to so many projects. Launch stuff when it is ready. I hope Sony's taking down of CP2077 was a watershed moment for the industry that this stuff is acceptable... I doubt it, but I can hope.
I'm hoping this is Housemarque's proper coming of age game, it looks really good in terms of gameplay loop. Fast, responsive third person bullet-hell shooter, I hope it delivers and proves to be worth it's asking price, I do think the hike in next-gen game isn't helping some games out on the PS5, with services like Game Pass, & with the inevitable economic downturn coming the price hike will do more harm than good.
How do you solve a problem like Japan? Well for starters they need software Japanese consumers want to buy. Long-term though I think streaming services are the way forward in Japan. Reading that most under 30 Japanese adults watch their films & anime on tablets, many don't even have "traditional" TVs. So you need to get the content to devices they do have. Mobile phones, tablets & PCs. It's why the idea of Game Pass is apparently appealing to Japanese consumers.
Pretty solid choices Liam. I approve. None of them made me raise an eyebrow. Might not be my personal choices, but that's a list I understand and can respect.
Well industry rumours were Sony had secured 4 timed exclusive deals from the ZeniMax / Bethesda Group. We know about Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo. The rest is speculation and hearsay I guess, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Microsoft might be in a position if publishing timed exclusives on PlsyStation.
@Gamer83 I loved Gravity Rush 2, the thing is that Sony Japan moved towards mobile games for PSP and then PS Vita, so the teams were scaled towards that, and then the PS Vita didn't exactly set the sales charts alive did it? So they transitioned the entire studio towards developing that, and then the PS4 took off like a rocket. Then they had to bring new people in to try and turn the studio around, There were supposedly 3 projects, but none of them have been seen, Project Rayspace was spoken about like it was nearly ready, then nothing. Studio Japan has transitioned to being a support studio, which is quite frankly a tragedy. Still, Sony should invest in their studios there and maybe some external teams.
@MrGilly69 well actually companies retain "hold over" of stock at launch or waves of launch to ensure they can replace faulty units. Pretty standard practice.
@God_of_Nowt I'd actually like to see Sony support some of these new teams that are cropping up right now, give them a financial shoulder to lean on, the likes of genDesign, Bokeh, Kojima Productions & that spin off group from Platinum. I'd also like to see them invest again in their own first party offerings either via Japan Studios, or acquisitions. Do we know whether project Rayspace is still alive?
It's a tough one for Sony. They have funded Level-5, Atlus, Tecmo & others including Hideo Kojima's new team to produce Japanese games. Capcom even confirmed without Sony's backing SFV wouldn't have happened. However, there's no getting away from the fact that Studio Japan has under delivered this generation, but Sony's partnerships with third and second parties has bore fruit like Nioh etc.I expect that to continue, but equally I'd like to see them invest in Japanese development more, and their own studios too.
The PC got a port of Persona 4 Golden right? I'd like to see that come across to consoles as well. Probably too early for Persona 6. They've not milked the hell out of all possibly Persona 5 spin-offs yet. Can't wait for the Persona 5 bus driving simulator.
@JJ2 I think it is more that the rumours actually centered around Toyama & specifically these people who have gone to set up this studio. The names mentioned alongside the Sony Japan led reboot are pretty much all at this new studio now.
@DonJorginho not necessarily, this might actually be a technical requirement of Konami allowing another party to work on their IP. An entity technically independent of Sony. Although yes, at this point I think it is unlikely that they're working on a Silent Hill game, and these people would have been the most likely candidates internally at Sony.
If there are billboards up, then there's a launch relatively imminent I'd suggest. Marketing like this for a big title usually starts 1 to 2 months out.
With that out if the way... man, are those billboards cool looking. The purple really pops next to the miserable looking Glasgow sky. Perhaps that's why they chose Glasgow to unveil them. lol.
Yeah, it's not "industrious" players, it's not industrious to breach terms & conditions of service. If you've come up with some amazing idea the get around an "issue" there's a good chance you're breaching T&C of some service.
This is why Sony's online only sales because of Covid-19 just won't work. It hands professional scalpers just such a massive advantage. Similar stories are cropping up all over the place and stores don't care. They've sold their stock. Sony should though. Because every console sitting in a warehouse is losing them money, because people aren't buying games for consoles sitting in a scalpers warehouse. Plus any extra money people have to spend to get is potential lost revenue for game sales. Sony need to get across this ASAP, because they've handled the launch atrociously. They were warned, and they ignored those warnings.
Could also be that even this close to launch they just don't know. RE8 was until very, very recently coming to PS4 and X1 but grew in scope to the point where I think they've fully canned the last-gen versions, or have said they might come at a later date. Santa Monica might be at a similar tipping point in development right now, & they might be having those internal discussions.
It's far less work to patch this into an XSS|X game. Every team has limited resources. This was more than likely an easy job for a couple of people in the GDK. So easy to allocate the resources to, to get the positive result.
On the PS5 it is far more difficult, so as a business they have to weigh up whether it is worth it financially for them to do it. Those are just the commercial realities of development. They haven't said they aren't working on a PS5 version, but given they are developing a sequel were I the studio head there I'd probably push my resources to that instead.
@God_of_Nowt yeah, essentially on the XSS|X it's patching the existing version of the game. On the PS5 it would require porting the game in full pretty much. So a different version of the game just for PS5, versus a patch to update the game on Xbox platforms. One is easy, the other is a lot of work.
@God_of_Nowt the developer basically confirmed my comment. We're essentially talking about a simple patch on XSS|X due to the unified development pipeline. That's just not the case with PS5.
@Steve30000 Bots logging Ng in multiple times to snaffle them up. I reported them to Tradera as it goes against their T&C's I think but they're on Facebook sales groups as well. All from a large retailer called El Giganten here. So unscrewed this up big time, and in the US today it's clear what limited stock online there was went to bots as well. It is what it is.
Bots completely snaffled the pre-orders in many countries. Quite galling seeing people on resale marketplaces clearly with multiple units secured, one seller here in Sweden on Tradera had nearly 20 of the damn things.
Any way, perhaps the snappy respawns might genuinely reduce that? I think the SoulsBorne games are amongst the most rewarding game experiences you can have, and Demon's Souls is the one that kicked it all off. You should consider giving it a go.
@ORO_ERICIUS I honestly think the quick respawns might take the frustration and rage out if dying in the SoulsBorne genre. This might make a difference for you personally, not sure what your issues with the genre are. Either way it looks stunning.
For those thinking this is underhanded shenanigans by MS... it is not. MS has moved over from it's Xbox only SDK, known as XDK, to a general purpose DirextX pipeline that includes PC development known as GDK. Simply put it is far easier for studios to retrofit Xbox games with XSS|X updates using PC "code" and "assets" than it is to do likewise for the PS5. There are downsides to the GDK that many developers I know are grumbling about, but there are some significant upsides too, and this is one of them.

@God_of_Nowt there are a few smaller studios in Europe and the UK that could absolutely be bought on the cheap and offer creativity in spades, Mediatonic, Hello Games, Tarsier, Bloober, ZA/UM, 4A, People Can Fly, there's loads. Even larger studios like Sumo or Techland with money and support could breath life into older dormant franchises or even give them the exciting new ones. I hope Herman Hulst knows this, and has the clout to bring them new franchise and partners into the fold. European studios need some support, and there are Japanese studios like Tecmo, Level-5 and Platinum Games who are all struggling right now. Even bigger publishers like Capcom have had issues recently in financial terms. I fully expect Microsoft to snap some more of these studios up.
