Re: Poll: Did You Buy GTA Trilogy?

TheRedComet

As for the trilogy, I’ll wait for a bargain bin price. The only one I’m really interested in is Vice City because I never played all the way through it. I beat 3 (PS2) once and I’ve played through San Andreas (PC DVD version with the really cool travel book style case) too many times to count.

Re: Poll: Did You Buy GTA Trilogy?

TheRedComet

@Agramonte

I don’t think Advance Wars Remake counts. We haven’t had one since 2006’s Days of Ruin.

I’ll pick up the Remake for Advance Wars. I never played it on GBA; I had the two on DS. So for me they’ll be new games.

Re: Feature: PS5 Report Card - How Is It After One Year?

@MB81

They are. If it had been something more serious I would have sent it in.

But trigger springs were an issue on Early Dualshock 4s (pre-2016, that year they changed the design) as well. So I got really good at changing them out.

No sense in waiting weeks for an issue I can fix in five minutes.

Re: October 2021 NPD: PS5 Is Still the Best-Selling US System of the Year

TheRedComet

@Ryall

Switch is a different animal, and they won’t lead on that platform. For two key reasons.

1. Switch software sales are dominated by Nintendo published titles, especially their known big IPs. Third party games sell ok, certainly better than previous generations of Nintendo platforms. But third party games typically don’t see the sales they enjoy on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC thanks to Nintendo’s own software dominating the buying preferences of their customers. I’ll even admit guilt for myself. When I look at my Switch’s catalog on my SD card, it’s 90% Nintendo IP and a handful of classic collections. Dragon Quest XI is the only big name third party title I bought for it.

2. If you’re building a multi platform AAA game, building it primarily for Switch first will horribly hobble your other console versions and on PC. Switch hardware, while impressive for what it is, is significantly behind the PS4, much less your average gaming rig (not the high end ones, but the GTX1060 based rigs that are actually the most common) and certainly far behind the 9th generation consoles and higher end PCs. You wouldn’t be competitive on those other platforms relative to your competition. I hate to say it, but graphical fidelity significantly sells games on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

When it comes to third parties, developers should build exclusive experiences for the Switch that cater to its audience. Ubisoft has the right idea with their Mario and Rabbids franchise. License Nintendo IP. Or go for indie and AA development with creative gameplay ideas. Your average Switch gamer isn’t like your average PC or console gamer. It’s a whole other market with different tastes.

For console and PC, focus on what their markets want.

Re: Feature: PS5 Report Card - How Is It After One Year?

@Zag_Man

For me I’ve always preferred 60FPS. I tolerated 30fps since I knew that for most games that’s what the PS4 was capable of in regards to triple a titles. Same thing with my Switch.

But now that there’s an option for it, I always play in performance mode at 60FPS. It’s so much smoother, even for games where I don’t find it necessary, like RPGs.

As for load times, it’s the biggest deal for me personally. There were several games last generation that I dreaded playing because of how horrible the load times were on a cold boot. Red Dead II being one of the biggest offenders.

I shouldn’t have time to go fix a drink or wash my hands before the game starts. I know not everyone is like the at; both of my closest friends don’t really care about loading times. But it matters to me because I switch games constantly, so I’m always cold booting.

Re: Feature: PS5 Report Card - How Is It After One Year?

I’ll say I’m not impressed by the Dualsense’s reliability. I bought a new controller just so I’d have two. That one developed severe right stick drift after about four months of use. My pack in doesn’t have drift (it’s been a year so far) but I’ve had to retrofit Dualshock 4 springs into the L2/R2 triggers several times. I’ve taken this controller apart at least four times to install new trigger springs. It impacts the feel of the adaptive triggers pretty significantly, since Dualshock 4 springs aren’t as stiff as Dualsense springs.

Other than that, it’s my favorite console ever from a utility standpoint. The nonexistent load times are my favorite thing about it when it comes to PS5 software.

Re: Japanese Publisher Implies PlayStation Audience Is Transitioning to PC

TheRedComet

I like PC gaming (I actually grew up playing more on PC than on console) but considering the high costs of components these days I just don’t see myself getting back into it.

There’s also a time factor. I work a lot. I play games when I have the time. So I have a PS5 and a Switch. For now that suits me. As bad as I want to play Halo Infinite, I’m not getting a Series S just for that. Or building another PC.

With that said, I will probably build a good PC rig when Elder Scrolls VI launches. At that point a number of Xbox exclusives I want to play will be available and they always release day and date with PC. Plus by that point, the PS5 and Series X will be falling way behind PC hardware. So it will make good sense to build by 2024 or so.

Re: Round Up: Battlefield 2042 Reviews Share Early PC Impressions

TheRedComet

Ya know I really want this. But I’m very nervous considering the train wreck the open beta was (I participated). I love Battlefield but I felt burned by V by buying it on launch day.

I’m considering just getting Vanguard for now and giving Dice a few months to get 2042 where It needs to be. I need a new multiplayer shooter and I’m pretty burned out on Cold War.

Re: Square Enix Insinuates Crystal Dynamics Was the Wrong Dev for Marvel's Avengers

TheRedComet

@Northern_munkey

I agree. To me it reads like SE is admitting that they should have picked another studio to build a live service game.

Live service is extremely difficult, and traditional developers who don’t have management with experience in them are never going to do a good job. Crystal Dynamics has never done a live service game and I doubt many of its team members have either.

They should have had them working on a single player action adventure game. That is what they’re good at. I hope they get the opportunity to work on a dead SE franchise. I’d love to see what CD could do with a new Brave Fencer Musashi.

Re: Square Enix Insinuates Crystal Dynamics Was the Wrong Dev for Marvel's Avengers

TheRedComet

@MrMetroid

Rise of the Tomb Raider was fantastic.

From a gameplay standpoint it matched Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4 was better directed and had a better story. But gameplay wise ROTTR matched Uncharged 4.

CD is a great studio. In this case, they got stuck making a game that they have literal zero experience at.

You honestly believe Naughty Dog, a studio whose strengths lies in the same areas as Crystal Dynamics, would have done any better with a live service game?

Re: GTA Trilogy File Sizes Revealed for PS5

TheRedComet

@GamerDad66

I considered it on Switch but I buy digital exclusively on that console so that wasn’t my reason for deciding against it.

PS5 runs at 60FPS.

I kind of wish they would have prioritized 60FPS across all platforms, even if it required more aggressive resolution scaling a slight decrease in visual settings. I’d go for the Switch version in that context.

Re: You Can Save Scum Using Returnal's New Suspend Cycle Feature on PS5

TheRedComet

I will say this. I do like the resume feature. Mainly because I have a busy life and I can get called for work or to help family at any time. It’s also helpful because I jump between single player and multiplayer games.

That said, I use it as intended. I don’t use it to cheat or save scum. I only use it when I need to leave the game.

Re: You Can Save Scum Using Returnal's New Suspend Cycle Feature on PS5

TheRedComet

@lindos

Returnal is a different beast than Doom. The two are nothing alike beyond being shooters.

Restarting isn’t bad at all. Returnal is divided into story segments. Currently I’m on the Depths, or the 2nd story beat third biome. When I die, I don’t go back to the very beginning of the game. I go back to the fourth biome.

Another thing is that once you get permanent unlocks the game presents you with shortcuts. For example, Biome 4 has a short cut to the depths so you don’t have to go through Biome 5 again. You can go straight to Biome 6.

It’s a brilliantly designed game and it’s pretty forgiving of mistakes. Every enemy has a pattern that you learn to exploit over time and every weapon is viable against every enemy (except for the pistol, I hate that piece of garbage).

Unlike a lot of other modern games, it doesn’t hold your hands though. And it’s all about compromise between good and bad effects. The parasites are the best example. They often bestow extremely helpful bonuses. But as a consequence they also have negative effects that you have to learn to work around on your run.

Re: You Can Save Scum Using Returnal's New Suspend Cycle Feature on PS5

TheRedComet

@PhantomMenace84

I agree. When I sit down to play Returnal for a few hours I notice that my first few runs are usually trash with really bad RNG on artifacts and weapons. Or worse, I get thrown into a room a high level enemy right after I leave Helios. After I die about three or four times, the RNG gets a lot more forgiving and I can progress much farther.

The run I’m currently on is the best I’ve had since unlocking the depths. I’ve had really good RNGs with parasites on this run. Getting max benefits with easily worked around cons.

Re: Apple Music Confirmed for PS5, Out Today

TheRedComet

Yay!!! Finally something I’ve been asking for since I got my PS4 back in 2014 is now available on my PS5.

I’m only being partially sarcastic. I’m actually really happy about this. Just wish it would have happened on PS4 too back in the day.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy Is a Significantly Smaller Download on PS5

TheRedComet

@artemisthemp

Less duplication of assets. On PS4 and XBONE, developers copy assets across the games file so that when it needs to load it’s always “close” by. It decreases load times.

PS5 and Series X don’t need to do that as much, if at all in most cases. In addition, the RDNA CPUs in the current Gen consoles are a huge leap over the old underpowered Jaguar. They can decompress large files on the fly while still maintaining high performance for calculations. On PS4/XBONE, you were limited in your compression algorithms because you had to account for CPU wait time and processing speeds for each core. Not much of a concern in the current chipsets.

The Jaguar was underpowered in 2013; it used low wattage cores and was based on ultra book class processors that AMD was working on at the time. Aka, they were designed for efficiency and heat reduction first and foremost, performance being secondary. The current RDNA based CPUs in the new consoles are desktop class high wattage cores. It plays a role in why both consoles have such beefed up cooling systems and are dramatically larger than their predecessors. You stick the PS5’s CPU in a PS4 chassis with its cooling system and it would overhead almost immediately.

Re: This Is What the GTA Trilogy Looks Like on PS5, PS4

TheRedComet

@Jtheripper

San Andreas is a master class satire on 90s American culture. I never played it on PS2 like my friends did; I had the PC version. It’s a dated game, but the writing, dialogue, and voice acting are just as good as anything coming out today. The game is absolutely hilarious.

Being an American immersed in American pop culture and history, I was able to get all of the small jokes and satire the game employed. And it was the time of my life playing through the story.

GTA V tried to do the same thing with early 2010s American culture but… it missed the mark in a lot of ways, even though I think it is the better game overall. But nothing tops San Andreas satire on American pop culture. It’s absolutely brilliant.

Re: Video: 5 Ways PS Vita Was Ahead of Its Time

TheRedComet

@Splat

I have an issue with 3D games on handheld.

When I look back on my DS collection, it was 90% 2D.

I have a Switch. But I rarely play it in handheld mode. 90% of the time it’s docked. 7% is table top mode next to my bed before I go to sleep using my pro controller, but only on certain nights. Handheld is 3%, like if I’m going somewhere where I know I’ll have to wait for an hour. And even then, when it’s not in the dock I’m playing SNES games on it. That’s the only time I even use those horrifically uncomfortable joycons.

I just can’t get around to 3D gaming on a small screen. The GBA to me was the best handheld ever. And it was the one I played the most. My SP never left my pocket unless I was charging it. I took it everywhere.

Re: GTA Trilogy Now Removed from PS Store Ahead of PS5, PS4 Remasters

TheRedComet

@kyleforrester87

I respect that.

I respect game preservation for only one reason, and it’s a selfish one. It keeps nonsense like the Sega Saturn collection from getting out of control.

I’ll never get to play Panzer Dragoon Saga because I’m not dropping 1500 bucks on a copy.

Thank God SNK has rereleased a lot of Neo Geo AES games and that they are easy to emulate. I can’t imagine a world where I’d need to drop three grand to play Metal Slug 3.

Re: Soapbox: Some Games Assume You Know How to Play Them, and It's Kinda Weird

TheRedComet

@UnlimitedSevens

I agree with that. I tried to get an ex of mine into playing a Call of Duty campaign. She would walk forward and then use the right stick to aim. But she was having issues doing both at the same time.

I was playing some COD multiplayer last night and now that I think about it, as a lifelong gamer who’s played shooters since Unreal Tournament and Goldeneye, you don’t notice how minute your stick flicks are for movement. I’ve been doing it for so long that I don’t even notice myself flicking the stick quickly to circle around, or the small minute changes I make when zeroing my aim while moving. How I’m constantly moving both sticks while using the shoulder buttons and doing split second button presses where I’m off the right stick for just a fraction of a second.

I definitely see why that would be intimidating to a newcomer to 3D games, especially fast paced games like shooters.

Re: Far Cry 6 (PS5) - The Best Game in the Series, Sort Of

TheRedComet

@carlos82

They need to take a page from Breath of the Wild.

BOTW never overwhelms you with tedious fetch quest or stupid randomized encounters that take you out of what you’re doing.

I love Far Cry, but I’ll admit that 5 left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I won’t buy this one until it’s 30 or less.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 397

TheRedComet

I played a few matches of the 2042 beta. I like it but you can tell the beta is based on an older code base. It’s kind of janky at times. The network is stable though which is a plus for launch. I’m just hoping they fix some of the glitches before launch.

I’m also playing Metroid Dread so far. It’s amazing. The difficulty reminds me of Fusion in a lot of way. It’s challenging, but it’s fair.

Also Black Ops Cold War and I’m trying to finish up Metro Exodus.

Re: GTA: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition Finally Announced for PS5, PS4

TheRedComet

@Yaycandy

I’m hoping it’s based on the PC version. That was the one I owned back in the day (it was the first PC DVD game that I ever owned) and it was pretty cool maxing out the draw distance and running it at four times the resolution of the console version. The game was surprisingly playable on M&K too, which I liked a lot. Plus the custom soundtrack station.

It was locked at 30FPS though. I built that rig to play FEAR on mostly high settings. So I was disappointed in that regard.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy With Your PS Plus Games for October 2021?

TheRedComet

@kill_Nil

They don’t compete.

PS+ is primarily for online multiplayer. The free games are just that, free games. While I’m not impressed by the line up most months, I don’t really care because I pay for online multiplayer first and foremost.

Playstation Now is what competes with Gamepass. It has some issues despite having a larger library. Game pass gives you a lot of games on day one release. That’s not the case with Now.

With that said, Sony can’t afford a service like Gamepass. Sony depends on its multi hundreds of millions of dollars AAA 1st party games to sell like hot cakes. It needs the direct royalties from third party game sales.

Let’s be fair, Microsoft subsidizes Game Pass. There’s no way they make money from it, not at their low price rate. Sony doesn’t have that level of cash on hand. And Sony’s board would never tolerate pouring money into an unprofitable venture that no one knows when it would turn a profit. Hell they threw the largest fit in company history over the PS3 disaster and there was some fear that PlayStation could have been canned over it. Thankfully SCE was able to turn the PS3 around but it never actually made a profit. They never recouped the enormous development costs. They just got close to breaking even. Notice how much safer Sony played the PS4 than they did with the PS3.

Re: Sony Introduces Game Trials, Try PS5 Games for a Limited Time

TheRedComet

@GreatAuk

I’ll admit that I got spoiled by my previous internet provider. I worked in a decent size city and had cable. I pulled down 300mbps almost all the time. I got spoiled by it.

When I moved back into the rural area I grew up in… man it’s good compared to what a lot of people can get but compared to my previous cable… it’s depressing. 100 gig downloads were nothing.

Re: Sony Introduces Game Trials, Try PS5 Games for a Limited Time

TheRedComet

@GreatAuk

Depends on where you live.

I live in a rural part of the deep south. The best I can get is Fixed Wireless through ATT.

It’s a lot better than Satellite, but my speeds are sort of all over the place. If there’s very low network traffic I’ve seen speeds of nearly 90mbs.

Lowest is 30mbps. It usually hovers around 45-50mbps, sometimes hitting 70mbps on perfect days (low traffic, perfectly clear weather, etc.)

Right now I’m seeing the lower end of the spectrum thanks to the crappy weather we’ve been having since Ida and the fact that the infrastructure still isn’t back to pre hurricane levels. They even canceled accepting new members for the next few months.

Re: Sony Introduces Game Trials, Try PS5 Games for a Limited Time

TheRedComet

The problem with this is that the timer starts as soon as you start downloading the title.

Sony, not all of us stupid fast internet. I pull down about 50-70mbps most of the time.

Once again gaming companies hate those of us in rural areas. I literally have the fastest, best option you can get in certain parts of the rural United States. I ping low enough to play SFV with barely any lag in 90% of the matches I play. But my DL speeds are limited to 90mbps max when there’s low network traffic at 2 in the morning. Most of the time, it’s anywhere from 30mbps on the low end to 50-70 on the high end. Depends on network congestion since it’s over the air through LTE.
