Re: Horizon Forbidden West Is Getting Review Bombed on PS5, PS4 for No Reason

TheRedComet

@Singels

Most of those guys are 4chan incels.

They tend to complain about crap like ethnic diversity, what they consider “woke” and nonsense like that.

The series is ultimately about environmental protection and climate mitigation. A fascinating subject that even a person like me, who is more right leaning, loves to explore in my fictional stories.

I’m one of those weird right wing leaning people who believes in environmental protection and mitigating climate change. So I’m glad that games are exploring those issues and Horizon has been one of the best at it.

It’s very, very slight on PS5. I’ve got the PS5 version and a buddy of mine has it on PS4 Pro.

We were sending each other videos comparing the two versions last night and I will say, the PS4 version has a TON of pop-in at relatively short ranges.

On PS5, I didn’t notice pop in until I actually got to the real Forbidden West and the game’s draw distance really expanded since you are on open plains and desert terrain. I’ve noticed some pop-in of really distant objects. But it’s nowhere close to the pop-in on PS4.

Re: Horizon Forbidden West Is Getting Review Bombed on PS5, PS4 for No Reason

TheRedComet

@Palleon

I only have two complaints about the game so far, both technically related.

1. Certain shadows look weird. And they’ll do weird things in cutscenes. Like one where the guy I was talking to had a weird shadow mesh cross his right shoulder every time he moved his arm. I’m expecting that to be rectified in the first big patch for the game.

2. NPC and Enemy “walking” and “dying” routines need some extra work. NPCs will sometimes literally walk in front of the camera in dialog scenes. And I had a hilarious glitch last night where I killed a human dude and he was stuck standing up without body armor on. He’s like an eternal statue.

I’m 7 hours in and I’m LOVING the game. They took everything I loved about Zero Dawn (that was my favorite PS4 game) and went to the next level with it and fixed the things that didn’t work in Horizon 1. For example, the human enemies are actually not total bores to fight this time.

Re: God of War Ragnarok PS5, PS4 Still Pegged to Release This Year

TheRedComet

@KidBoruto

Maybe. God of War is certainly a possibility, but it probably won’t be this year. Maybe after Ragnarok.

Dayz Gone? Definitely not. Song corporate and the upper management of Bend don’t really like Dayz Gone. Sony is all about those huge video game awards and Dayz Gone was the only PS4 Big Budget Cinema game that didn’t make a good showing.

Re: God of War Ragnarok PS5, PS4 Still Pegged to Release This Year

TheRedComet

@jFug

Yeah that was definitely a weird take.

One is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time, especially it’s Gamecube remake. Played from a fixed camera angle. The other one is slapstick comedy with walls of meat and a plot that even by Resident Evil standards makes no damn sense. Plus it plays like an off brand Gears of War. Or a worse version of Lost Planet.

Re: God of War Ragnarok PS5, PS4 Still Pegged to Release This Year

TheRedComet

@Ralizah

Also I agree. Mario Odyssey has more in common with Banjo Kazooie than Mario 64.

Sunshine was both a heavy refinement and a step back from Mario 64. But the two are very closely related.

Odyssey is a pure collect-a-thon using Mario’s moveset pioneered in Mario 64 and expanded in Sunshine. Other than, it doesn’t share much with those two games.

Re: Test Your PlayStation General Knowledge - Issue 3

TheRedComet

Got a 10.

I’m ok with that. I actually played some of these games on the quiz lol.

Especially Metal Gear Solid on PS1. God that was my childhood. I know that game like the back of my hand. Back when Konami was the king of third party developers. I actually ordered a Konami t shirt with allowance money (video game t shirts were horribly overpriced back then, since you pretty much had to direct order from the company in question) and wore to school constantly.

Now look at them. They’re pathetic. Such a shame.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 414

@Roqka

I live in the rural United States. I have fixed wireless so it uses LTE over the air. Basically imagine a cell phone antenna but it’s the size of a Xbox Series X attached to a pole behind my place. So I get the best signal possible.

It’s the best option I can get where I live. But it’s really sensitive to network traffic. So during the daytime hours it’s pulling down about 15 mbs because all the Netflix junkies are streaming off of their phones. They prioritize cell phone users over fixed wireless users. But late at night, when the streaming junkies are asleep, it’s surprisingly quick for what it is and for how far in the rural south I live. Upwards of 60 mbps.

Basically ATT gives all the bandwidth to cell phones during daylight hours but at night they give us the bandwidth. Also the latency is surprisingly low for gaming, even at peak bandwidth usage. The only online multiplayer games I can’t really play are fighting games without rollback. Otherwise, my pings are shockingly low in games like Fortnite or Call of Duty.

But the biggest catch, and the reason I buy all single player games on disc, is that I’m capped to 350 gigs per month. Fortunately I have a secondary LTE service with a hotspot that can stream at 720p with unlimited data to take care of my TV needs.

So the fixed wireless is dedicated to my PlayStation 5, Switch, and my phone and laptop. I use the slower service with unlimited data for streaming tv.

That’s the issue with rural living and the internet. You’re restricted to what is available and you have get creative and spend extra money to take care of all your network needs. I pay 50 bucks a month for the fixed wireless and another 40 bucks per month for that little hotspot.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 414

TheRedComet

@Roqka

I would kill all the Tusken Raider families Anakin style for internet that fast.

I bought the disc version to specifically avoid that. It took about 40 minutes to install from the disc and apply the day one patch.

Downloading the game would have taken about 5 hours.

Well there was a secondary reason behind it too. I wanted the steelbook edition with a disc.

Re: Sony's Releasing a PS4 System Update to Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Disc Issues

TheRedComet

@lolwhatno

They completely botched the 8th gen versions. And no one should defend those versions at all. They’re trash.

What they should have done was delay the 8th gen versions and built a custom lighting engine for their hardware that didn’t need ray tracing to look good.

And honestly it seems like the 9th gen version has its own visual issues.

At this point, I’ve pretty much accepted that the only way to play Cyberpunk in its visual glory is to build a 2500 dollar gaming rig. Any other method of playing it just seems off.

Unfortunately, I ain’t got that kind of cash. I’m gonna buy this for PS5 once I’m done with the trial and then sit on it for another patch or two before I play all the way through it.

I’ve got Forbidden West taking over my life right now anyway.

Re: Sony's Releasing a PS4 System Update to Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Disc Issues

TheRedComet

@Bleachedsmiles

The console implementation of RT is gimped. You only get Ray traced shadows. And a low res version at that.

On PC the ray tracing menu is as large as most game’s regular settings. And the only way to see the visuals as intended is to turn all of them on.

Which would be great if there was affordable hardware that could actually run it well like that.

The biggest mistake CDPR made in my opinion is creating a game that even a 1400 dollar state of the art graphics card struggles to render. Sort of like Crysis back in the day.

Re: Sony's Releasing a PS4 System Update to Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Disc Issues

TheRedComet

I’ll add this. I think the reason the PS4 and Xbone versions look so terrible compared to the PC version is that the game was built from the ground up to use Ray tracing to handle just about every lighting related visual effect in the game. When it’s turned off, the game defaults to pre calculated baked lighting and because I think CDPR was focusing so hard on the Ray tracing, they skimped on the baked lighting assets. It affects every texture in the game. It looks weird on PC and PS5/Series X when they are running without RT and looks absolutely awful on the low resolutions the Xbone and PS4 versions run at.

By comparison, Forbidden West doesn’t use Ray tracing; everything is old school pre calculated light maps. But because the game was designed around that method of lighting objects and casting shadows, it looks amazing; better than many RT implementations honestly. Even if it is technically less accurate than Ray tracing would have been had they used it and is a much more labor intensive process.

Re: Sony's Releasing a PS4 System Update to Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Disc Issues

TheRedComet

@lolwhatno

It’s actually an incredibly demanding game regardless of CDPR’s poor optimization.

On PC, on Ultra settings with all Ray tracing effects turned on, it’s an incredibly stunning game visually speaking.

Granted to do that, a person has to be running a stupidly powerful PC. Even the mighty RTX 3080 struggles to render it at those settings at 60 frames per second unless you use DLSS Performance settings.

From what I understand, the PS4 and Xbone versions are actually running a custom visual setting you can’t access on PC. It’s below the PC’s Low preset. They look like a totally different game because of it.

The PS5 and Series X in Resolution mode get close to the PC’s high settings, but with numerous custom settings to keep the framerate locked at 30. And you only get Ray traced shadows. All of the other Ray trace settings are disabled.

Re: Sony's Releasing a PS4 System Update to Fix Cyberpunk 2077 Disc Issues

TheRedComet

@Matroska

I think that’s like a thing with the PS5.

When I put my PS4 disc for Doom Eternal in to play the PS5, it always shows both icons on the dashboard. It does the same for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Hopefully this system patch will rectify that. It never tries to install the games like yours does, but it puts the PS4 icon on the dashboard anytime the disc is inserted.

It’s really annoying.

Re: PlayStation Studios Celebrate Horizon Forbidden West Launch with Cool Crossover Art

@Deljo

In the canon she’s a chick. So I’m going based off of that. I know the pre release rumors that Abby is trans but according to Naughty Dog she’s a genetic woman.

I’ve seen women built like that before, one is local and owns the local gym. She’s built like a beast. Like a 5 ft 4 inch tall John Cena. I moved away from the hometown for a few years so when I moved back that was my first time seeing her since she started her routine. Needless to say I was shocked and a little intimidated. Never saw a girl that height with muscles like that. She even has a crazy toned six pack.

Re: PlayStation Studios Celebrate Horizon Forbidden West Launch with Cool Crossover Art

TheRedComet

@Col_McCafferty

Hand to hand? I mean Abby has .500 Smith and Wessons for arms so I think she takes that fight.

Otherwise? Definitely Aloy.

Speaking of Abby, how on earth did no one ever notice her stealing a crap ton of extra rations? I actually know a girl who’s built like that (she owns a gym and performs in women weight lifting competitions) and she’s on a 4000 calorie a day diet to keep her gains.

Re: Uncharted Arrives in Fortnite Item Shop, Quests Coming Soon to PS5, PS4

TheRedComet

@WallyWest

Anyone can buy them.

Kratos and Aloy were available on each platform, as was Master Chief.

But if you played a match with Kratos and Aloy base skins equipped on a PS5 you unlocked an exclusive skin variation of each. Kratos got his gold armor and Aloy got that outfit from the Frozen Wilds.

If you did the same thing on Series X or Series S with Master Chief you unlocked a skin similar to his Halo 5 appearance.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5?

TheRedComet

@kyleforrester87

As a whole gaming today is fantastic.

But I think AAA gaming has some big flaws that needed to be worked out.

Cyberpunk’s launch was a symptom of an industry wide issue.

Unreasonable expectations by publishers.

I believe that is at the core of why AAA gaming is controversial today. Many publishers are still acting like it’s the 1990s and blockbusters can be put out in a playable state with just a year of hardcore development.

Re: Horizon Forbidden West: Is It Good on PS4?

TheRedComet

@Would_you_kindly

I’m a bit perplexed as to why Sony didn’t update the PS4 to at least recognize the Dualsense as a Dualshock 4.

When they updated the PS3 to support Dualshock 4s I threw a party. I was down to my last Dualshock 3 at the time; I was still playing a lot of PS3 titles at that time. After that update I used my Dualshock 4 90% of the time. I only used the DS3 to turn the system on and off. I remember vividly that the DS4 couldn’t power the system on wirelessly.

Re: Horizon Forbidden West: Is It Good on PS4?

TheRedComet

I’m glad all my PS4 peeps are getting a great version of the game.

I’m so ready for tomorrow to get here so I can go pick up my Steelbook PS5 version from the local GameStop.

Weirdly enough, I’m the only person at that GameStop who preordered a PS5 version. I looked at the preorder list while I was there. 99% of the orders are for the base PS4 version. I’m the only person who ordered the special edition for PS5.

I figure that’s because of the free upgrade and they don’t have bandwidth limitations. I get 350 gigs per month, and as small as the day one patch is, it sounds like the entire game is on the disc. Works for me; I get a cool case and I save a 90 gig download.

Re: Fortnite Gets Even Better with Gyro Controls on PS5, PS4

TheRedComet

I think I’ll just stick with analog sticks with aim assist.

Every time I’ve tried gyro I’ve hated it. It was way too sensitive and I’m anything but steady handed.

With that said… I may jump into a creative game and play around with it just to see if it’s gotten any better since I last tried it (Breath of the Wild).

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Version Likely Launching Tomorrow

TheRedComet

@Rural-Bandit

That’s pretty much how it was during the sixth generation. Microsoft had a lock with the OG Xbox on PC to console ported western RPGS and you bought a PS2 for JRPGs. The GameCube wasn’t much of an RPG machine in general, but it did get two standout releases (Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia).

Re: Horizon Forbidden West (PS5) - Excellent Sequel Is a PS5 Essential

TheRedComet

I think Horizon is one of those series that either makes you obsessed (like I am) or it’s not that appealing.

I loved the first game; it was my favorite PS4 title. I loved the setting, the lore behind the story, the characters, the technical excellence of Guerrilla games, and the fantastic machine fights. It wasn’t a perfect game, but it was on those few open world games that I played from start to finish, explored most of the game world, and did 80% of the side quests. That’s a rarity for me; I’m not the biggest fan of open world titles most of the time. Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, and Ghost of Tsushima are the only big open world games I played to completion while doing most of the side activities.

I’m expecting I’ll love Forbidden West even more than I did Zero Dawn, since it sounds like my two biggest complaints from Zero Dawn (the boring human fights and the stilted conversation scenes) have been massively improved.

Re: Horizon Forbidden West PS5, PS4 Graphics Modes Analysed by Digital Foundry

TheRedComet

@KundaliniRising333

There’s a lot wrong with this post.

Game development is always a choice. Developers have to make certain calls while developing their games. And unlike PC where hardware is scalable, that’s not possible on console.

These consoles are plenty powerful. Both the PS5 and Series X hover between a 2070 Super and a 2080Ti in terms of raw compute. It’s hard to compare them though since consoles are integrated systems with development dedicated to once hardware specification. In that situation, developers can do some amazing things optimizing the hardware.

I mean look at Horizon 2 on base PS4. The GPU on a base ps4 is somewhere around a GTX 700 series GPU. It’s CPU, the underpowered Jaguar, is weaker in terms of raw power than the PS3’s Cell was. Yet look at what Guerrilla was able to achieve through careful use of the hardware combined with 8 years of working with its architecture.

Re: Horizon Forbidden West PS5, PS4 Graphics Modes Analysed by Digital Foundry

TheRedComet

@Medic_Alert

That’s what I noticed. I was a little worried that performance mode would use lower geometric detail but according to the video both modes main settings are virtually identical. The only things you gain with resolution mode are 2160P native, better AA, and slightly higher shadow resolution.

I will gladly sacrifice all of that for 60fps.

The game is drop dead beautiful. I’m really impressed with the PS4 version though. It looks fantastic and if I didn’t have a PS5 I would gladly play that version. Even with the 30fps cap.
