I’m not great at it but I play it mainly because my best friend is a crack head about it and for my second best friends it’s one of the only games he plays online since it has fairly small updates (he’s on a real strict data cap and his gf sucks it dry with Netflix, ah the wonders of living in the rural United States). It’s the only game we all three like and can play together.
That said, I’ve already told them that once Battlefield 2042 drops they won’t be seeing me on much for about a month at least lol.
While I listed VRR as my primary request, I would also like to see Sony completely overhaul the Media Player application.
Outside of Codec support, the PS3’s media player was far superior to PS4 or PS5’s implementations. I would like to see that player return with the modern codec support the PS5 offers thanks to its more modern hardware.
Some games have very unstable frame rates during certain sections.
For example, Valhalla has some frame rate issues during certain cutscenes in performance mode. The game is supposed to be a constant locked 60, and in general it is, but there are some cutscenes where it drops five to ten frames and it causes screen tearing.
My current TV doesn’t support VRR, but my next TV will. Plus in the future as games grow more graphically complex we will probably see games that commonly dip into the low 50s in performance mode during intense sections.
1. VRR (my next big TV will have it) 2. Folders (so I can segregate my disc titles from my download titles) 3. Bring back the PS3 media player with modern codec support (the PS4 and PS5 players suck)
It was really weird. My first PS2 games I bought back in early 2003 were MGS2, FFX, and Unreal Tournament (it was five bucks and while I already owned it on PC, I said why not since my PC was in a different room). I was perplexed why the disc had a blue read sector instead of silver like my other two games. Did some reading on the internet and learned about certain PS2 games, especially early ones, being released on CD instead of DVD.
Uhm a lot of people play on computer monitors. I used to myself. 1440P should be fully supported.
Also I don’t expect BC for PS2 or PS1 games. But there are a good number of us who would like to play some PS3 games we missed out on without resorting to streaming. I’ve tried it; it’s unusable on my network.
The PS5 could emulate the PS3. They don’t need to support every game, but a nice collection of 50 or so titles would be nice. Cerny even mentioned that the Tempest audio chip in the PS5 works in a similar fashion to the Cell’s SPUs. So that could make developing an emulator easier.
Considering that a decently speced PC can run MGS4 at 60fps utilizing software emulation of the Cell’s SPUs means that Sony could certainly do it since they own the source code and the Tempest already functions like a miniaturized version of the Cell.
And a few PS2 games. Unreal Tournament for PS2 was issued on CD-ROM. PS2 CD games were uncommon but you could tell by the color of the read section of the disc. They were a dark blue color.
They were more common early in its lifecycle but after 2001 they were basically discontinued. Games had already grown by a significant amount and 700MB wasn’t going to cut it after that.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of GOW 18, and I think the Norse mythology was my main issue with it. The gameplay was fun and I loved the father-son aspects with Kratos and Atreus. But I never got invested in the world they were in. I’ve never cared for Norse mythology; I find Greek and Roman to be far more appealing.
We’ve just reached a point of diminishing visual returns with all hardware.
I was never expecting a quantum leap in terms of visual fidelity and I can barely notice resolutions above 1080P unless it’s text.
For me, it was all about loading and the quality of life improvements. The end of the PS4/XBONE proved that the consoles needed a fundamental rethink about bandwidth and storage solutions. Graphically speaking, they hold up, but the load times of games like RDRII proved to me that we (as gamers) desperately needed new hardware.
Every time I boot up the PS5 version of FF7 VII Remake, I’m blown away. Not by the visuals; it’s a little cleaner than PS4 but the assets are basically the same. But by the instantaneous load times. When you load your save it’s literally about half a second and you’re controlling your character. I never played the PS4 version on PS4 hardware, but I did play it through back compat. And it was about a 20 second load time on PS5; I could only imagine how bad it would be on base PS4 hardware.
The seemlessness is what this generation is about. And the fact that we are finally getting a majority of titles locked to 60fps.
Actually I would rather have Cross remastered first. Mainly because Trigger’s visuals have aged very well whereas Cross suffers from the “PS1” effect with its aliasing issues and geometry clip in issues.
Some people literally have no choices when it comes to an ISP.
I’m in the camp. The only thing I could get in my rural service area is fixed wireless. And thank God I got myself locked in when I did. A month after my service was activated they stopped accepting new subscribers because the tower capacity is maxed out. Thankfully that hasn’t impacted my speed or network stability but I was told that’ll it’ll be next year (when they upgrade the two towers in my county, US resident) before they can start accepting subscribers again.
The only thing that really got me hyped was Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine. Well and Gran Turismo.
Everything else, I just wasn’t that interested in. I’m probably one of five people who weren’t absolutely blown away by God of War 2018. So Ragnarok isn’t a game I’m getting until it has a price drop. I got GOW in mid 2019 and never beat it. I got tired of it roughly a quarter of the way through.
I had the exact opposite reaction. I didn’t care for it. Interesting game mode, but I didn’t care for the gun play.
From what I understand Vanguard runs on MW 2019 graphics engine and uses it’s shooting mechanics. The graphical upgrade was nice, but I’ve always been more into the arcady mechanics of the black ops series.
That said, I’ve gotten so sick of the cheating epidemic in Cold War that I uninstalled it. 400 hours of my life and I burned myself out on it thanks to hackers.
I agree but considering how constrained suppliers are right now (Toshiba flat out stated that they won’t be able to meet the current level of chip demand until 2023) I don’t see how Microsoft or Sony could move on until these things are reasonably available in retail stores. Considering the craziness around the PS5 since launch with these supply problems it’s likely it would be at 25 million sold by now had Sony been able to meet demand.
In that alternate world, there probably wouldn’t have been many cross Gen releases. But with the current realities facing these platform holders, it makes good sense that they are attempting to provide these games for last gen since most customers can’t even get a PS5 or Series X.
I got hella lucky. I got one through Wal Mart at launch. My friend wants one now since he’s played mine finally but I told him that it’s going to be a while. Late 2022 or early 2023 before you can walk into any store and buy these things. He’s not like me; he’s unwilling to play the online roulette especially since he has a PS4 Pro.
Y’all really need to experience the loading times. Or lack thereof. To me that’s the game changer.
Like the PS4 version of FF7 remake vs Intergrade. I played half of the game in back compat mode and now I’m finishing the game up with the free upgrade. It’s night and day difference on loading. And the load times were already heavily improved over playing on PS4 hardware.
It went from about 35 seconds down to about… a fade to black from the menu into gameplay? Maybe a second, two max.
I remember that drought vividly. I got my PS4 in February of 2014 and outside of Infamous and a few third party games I was mostly playing my PS3 backlog for the rest of the year.
Well we did the Last of Us Remastered, which was my first time experiencing the game. I never owned the PS3 version.
People always say the Sega CD was an abject failure, but it sold around 3 million units worldwide out of about 48 million Genesis consoles. That’s actually a decent attach rate considering the high cost of the hardware throughout its lifespan.
PSVR has a similar attach rate, so it’s a success in my book. Just not a runaway success like the Gen 1 Kinect was for Microsoft which managed like a 15% attach rate or something crazy like that.
When it comes to Tetris, my top three versions are tied.
Tetris on NES Tetris 99 Tetris Effect
I rank them all equally. I wasn’t able to play Effect with PSVR but man the soundtrack was mesmerizing. Played it through my 1000 watt surround system it was a magical experience.
I found her to be ok. That said she didn’t get enough screen time anyway considering how important she is in Gehralts life. I’m hoping they rectify that in season 2.
I’m half black myself and while I did find her to be ok in terms of her portrayal of Triss, I wish they would have went with a white actress who had natural red hair. I grew up with mouse and keyboard. I know how much more precise you can be with a MK combo.
But watch some of the kill cam videos. They are snap aiming with aim bot in a lot of cases. It’s easy to tell the difference between precise mouse aiming and aim bot.

Right now, building a good PC is next to impossible because of the rampant scalping on 3000 series nVidias and Big Navi AMD cards. The only way to get one for a reasonable price is to go the prebuilt route, which unfortunately means you’re getting a crap power supply, messy cabling (in most cases, some builders do a good job), and a sub par CPU. They also have a habit of using sketchy RAM.

Re: God of War Wins IGN's Big Best Video Game of All Time Poll
This list is crap.
Chrono Trigger deserves to be way farther towards the top.
It’s one of those few titles from the 16-bit era that feels as fresh to play today as it did in 1995.

Audio CD support won’t ever happen. The PS5’s Blu Ray drive can’t read them. The PS4 couldn’t either. Most modern Blu Ray drives can’t anymore.

It threw me off in FF7 Remake. In engine cutscenes were 60FPS just like the gameplay but the FMV sequences were rendered at 30.
It was really jarring.

I’d rather they delay it a few months and give us a game that needs minimal patches to run decent.

Yes. The story really hits it high notes in the middle section. All of the mid game quest lines are excellent. Plus the challenge starts to go up if you’re playing on the harder difficulties.
I will admit that I found the end game pretty weak story wise, though. The game’s best parts at roughly the halfway mark. Easily one of the best stretches of storytelling you’ll find in a modern game.

I like cross play with Xbox players. A few friends of mine are Xbox only and it’s nice being able to play Cold War with them.
I could certainly live without PC players, though. AimBot has gotten on my last nerve.
They should include an option to disable cross play with PC gamers. Only console gamers.
