@710King Its not as bad as I had envisioned it; but yeah I would prefer some kind of toggle that says: "I don't care about any social features ever, so please streamline the UI for me".
I am pleasantly surprised by most of this. The pin-able (picture-in-picture) cards are a nice touch. The social features don't appear to be in your face; but I would really like those cards in game to be about half that size. They take up way too much space.
Not a big fan of BK; but even at the chance of winning a PS5, its not worth the risk of eating at a place that is primarily staffed by teenagers that don't actually believe that COVID is a real issue. Thanks but no thanks.
@710King The UI is going to be pretty basic. I anticipate a PS4-like UI with some obnoxious social integrations that take up a large portion of the content areas that you have to slog through even if you don't ever use them. I actually dread the UI reveal.
@710King Yeah it doesn't really make sense as an advertising feature. Its almost like saying "The first next-gen generic, forgettable, button masher." It looks pretty but the always online and the general feel for how they are positioning the game, makes it a no-buy. It may be one of the only next gen games available at launch, but I would rather play a last gen game than to throw $60 away just to say I have a next gen game.
@RicksReflection I wouldn't think this would have much impact. Little Timmy's mom is likely there because little Timmy asked/pestered her for a specific console to play a specific game or to get the system that their friends have. It's not likely that she is going in there blind to spend $500.
@naruball That is likely from people that were undecided, or were going to get both but not sure on which one first.
I just noticed when getting a notification about replies in this topic that, S|X in some contexts/fonts can look like SIX which is clearly higher than 5. A coincidence, or clever marketing?
I don't get it. MS is spear-heading the drive to all digital / subscription, and GameStop is all about physical retail games. It seems like GameStop pushing MS consoles is just hastening their own demise.
I don't really know how much it has changed, but I remember back in the early days of Game Informer (GameStop's gaming magazine), it was a thinly disguised Xbox magazine that grudgingly talked about Sony and Nintendo products.
@TheIdleCritic I certainly care what it looks like. The presentation of any collection is an important aspect to that collection; but this change, while fairly ugly, is far better than, say, a GameStop "printed" insert replacement.
@djlard While I agree that the cases are a step back from the PS4 cases (its a weird inverted color scheme), I don't think they are that bad. And the PS5 actually looks pretty nice. Definitely a lot better than the PS3, PS4 or the Xbox (all).
@Crowley22g Maybe its step one in deprecating them entirely? Its inevitable that Sony removes the ability to download "legacy" titles once the number of downloads of those titles drop below some critical threshold, or the cost to maintain the infrastructure outweighs any indirect benefit that they get from it.
I don't like how Sony bundles purchased titles in the same category as PS+ titles. Why can't I see what I have bought separately? What happens when I unsub from PS+?
Also it looks like the "Played" category seems fairly limited and only shows a limited number of games.
I never really got into the themes on PS3 and PS4. I have tried quite a few; but eventually gave up. There is no real consistency (some are just backgrounds, some change the SFX, and some also change the icons) and often the SFX and Icon changes are abysmal.
If the PS5 titles can't be played with a PS4 controller, why would they will let you use the Vita (or PC) to play PS5 titles? What then is the reasoning behind restricting PS4 controllers? Could I use a PS4 controller to play PS5 titles via remote play on the PC? If so, that makes the restriction kind of arbitrary...
A game typically makes the vast majority of its money in the first 3-6 months. After that, the value of a game to a developer/publisher is practically zero. If, instead, you played on a gamers need to collect, or be the best, and continually sold them the same digital goods over and over again, you could stretch this revenue stream out for years with very little effort and risk.
I hope they make it useful to the core gameplay, not just an optional side-thing that doesn't really provide any benefit (like the conquest system from AC Odyssey).
@thefourfoldroot Look at the comparison screenshots, not the video. The video isn't very helpful in seeing the full scope of the visual changes, but the screenshots are night and day.
@710King I am not interested because it's not a common thing despite the claim otherwise and really doesn't exist outside of titles intended to be played with an online connection.
There may be a game here or there that is fundamentally broken on day one (like the one I mentioned) but these are extremely rare.
I am only pressing my point because I have played literally hundreds of PS4 and PS3 titles and have never once had a single one that required a day one patch or a download during install, that wasn't an online title.
@710King This has not been very common this generation. I have played nearly over 150 titles this generation, and not a single one had a required day one update, nor a mandatory download, with the exception of online only titles.
Your example while technically true, is stretching the definition. Call of Duty is primarily an online title with a "side" of offline, rather than the other way around.
You make the claim that it's very common, you should have no problem naming a few dozen at least. There are 4000+ titles on the PS4, so considering there are a lot of indie/digital only titles (which reduces that count a bit) "very common" should at least hit what, 1% of them?
As someone that exclusively buys retail titles, and go out of my way to verify they are playable without any download at all, it has been my experience that there are very very few titles that fall into this category.
@710King This is not true at all. If you disagree, name them, and link to articles or discussions about them not being playable* without a day one patch or a mandatory download.
I can name one, and its a very recent port (Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning) and the article about that game is here on PushSquare; but thats the extent of it.
*To be clear, I am defining playable as...playable. Can you complete the game from start to finish? I am not interested in hyperbole because the frame-rate isn't as stable or high as someones subjective opinion on the minimum frame-rate a game is playable at, or about bugs that are either avoidable or non-game breaking.
@BradT Thats not true at all. Discs install the game completely with zero requirement to download anything from the internet. (With the obvious exception of online based games) Day one patches are certainly nice, but rarely must haves.
There are some games (most notably on cartridges) that are collections and don't include every game in the collection on the cart, but those are extremely rare (I only know of 3, and only on cartridges) and they say so directly on the box.
Personally I pre-ordered this back when it was going to come out in April, but with each new delay it got pushed closer to the PS5 launch. I canceled my pre-order a few weeks ago and will happily wait for the next-gen console version to get the best (console) experience with the game possible.
@andjahiam With many PS4 games I often spend more time in load screens than I do playing the game. (Witcher 3 as a prime example!). Even if there were no PS5 exclusives, ever, I would try and get one as close to launch as possible for the decreased load times in PS4 games alone.
@SidNightwalker Are you saying that I should start liking games that I don't like so that I could like a system that has no games that I like? That doesn't really make any sense. Why not just play on a system that has the games I like already?
Keep in mind that I stopped using or caring about the Vita in about year 4 somewhere; so there could have been some great titles released after that, though I would always peruse my local game stores and never really saw the library grow.
I also avoid digital-only titles like the plague unless they are just so above and beyond great that they fall into the absolutely must play category.
@get2sammyb I agree. I dont see a point to quick resume. It just compounds the problems that already exist with the current resume functionality. If the system locks up, or you have a power fluctuation, or a power outage, and lose all of that progress you thought was preserved, you won't ever use this function.
@thefourfoldroot The Vita on paper was amazing. But the two touch screens and developers afraid to commit to console-ish budget titles on a handheld is what ruined it for me. I sold mine after a few years and went back to a 3DS with the postage stamp resolution
@thefourfoldroot Turn it off? How does one turn off the rear touchpad? It made Disgaea literally unplayable. Even a little bit of moisture from sweaty palms would trigger it constantly, scrolling through menus and switching attack targets at random. There was no way to turn that pad off when I got rid of my Vita.
If you mean in game settings for each particular game, none of the games that I had that I had issues with, had options to do this. I thought about modifying it at the hardware level once, and then just sold it.
@thefourfoldroot
I am a huge Sony fanboy, but the Vita was just...bad.
The rear touchpad I would always accidentally touch, and often it would trigger randomly even when I didn't (this was particularly annoying in Disgaea!) (I think it was ultra sensitive to sweaty palms). The front touch screen I would also accidentally touch (just the edges) constantly, because it was so close to the face buttons. This would wreck all sorts of havok in the games I played. Lastly the OS was atrocious. Like if Leap Frog decided to do a phone OS.
I could have suffered through all of that, if the games were there, unfortunately they were not. There was a handful of great titles, but developer support was just tragically lacking.
That is a pretty huge difference. I would like to know if the color intensity differences are just a result of the capture on the PS4 or if its really that washed out.
I was originally not interested in God Fall; but the recent trailers and gameplay had me second guessing that opinion. Always online, is a no-buy. Even if its patched out, that makes the retail copy unplayable without an internet connection and servers to download said update.
@AJDarkstar I can't wait to play it on the PS5 also; but I am going to wait until there is a PS5 upgrade for it, which won't come until "Sometime in 2021". I don't want to put 100+ hours into this in the PS4 version, if a little more patience will yield better fruit.
@Octane If this could be an option for the disc version, I would be a very happy gamer. I don't want any social features, I have 100 other devices to play Netflix on (and they generally do better!), I just want to have a game machine.
The PS4 BluRay player (In The West) has the X and O buttons swapped (compared to every other PS, and every other media app on the PS4). It is extremely annoying. Pick a style, I don't care, but pick one!
@theheadofabroom The amount any one person is affected by motion sickness varies; but what causes it is the same.
At the most fundamental level, its caused by a large difference in what your senses tell your brain it should be experiencing, and what is actually being experienced by your body.
This is most often caused in VR by motion. How much, or how often, does the movement in the game disconnect from the movement in reality? This will tell you what the generic comfort level is.
@PhhhCough Removing them shouldn't impact acoustics or air flow since they just attach to the side of the internal shell.
I don't think you would want to keep them removed, since its not likely to look very good with the exposed underside and attachment points visible. Those that hope for them to be removable are likely wanting replaceable faceplates.
@GamingFan4Lyf If I were to guess, its not that people don't care, its that the other studios are not really going to make an impact.
Personally the only studio that saddens me is Arkane. They can have Bethesda and they can have Id, no big loss. The other studios I don't think I have ever heard of, let alone played any of their games, so I don't really care who owns them.
I would love to get some early indie titles. The only time PS+ freebies have been beneficial to me is when they offer the games I wouldn't normally buy (digital only titles) which generally end up being indies. That being said I don't want this game. I am not a fan of the "art simulator" style of games.
@TheFrenchiestFry I am not sure how its a massive deal. Lets throw arbitrary numbers at this as an example.
Let's say they shipped 1000 Xbox One units to Japan, and only sold 500. Now let's say they shipped 200 Xbox Series X units to Japan, and sold all 200. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing. Its a good headline for those that don't read any further, but without actual numbers, its nonsense.
Now I am not saying that they didn't sell well, I don't have any numbers for that, I am just saying that the simple fact that it sold out has no meaning without context (and a comparison to either the competition or their previous launches)
@TheFrenchiestFry "Selling out" means nothing without actual numbers. Microsoft knows that Japan is not a big market for them, so it's doubtful that they allocated very many of their limited launch units to that market, which means that it's easy to sell out.
Other than the reflections in the building, and a few small textures in the background, I couldn't tell the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions (and sometimes I thought the PS4 version looked better). Generational leap it is not. At least not from these videos.
I expect actually playing it will have a much more noticeable impact than these comparison videos.
@invictus4000 You are not alone. If you stop and look at the textures on small objects in the background (a soda can, a garbage bag, etc...) you can see the detail level is much better on the PS5 version (and the reflections on the buildings), but everything else looks pretty much the same (just a little brighter).
@Johnnycide Its all about what kind of gamer you are.
If you are the kind of gamer that has a disposable income, at least to a degree that you can buy used titles a year later, then PS+ is not going to give you much that you don't already own.
Then there are the types that are more casual, they buy 5-15 titles per generation (iirc the average attach rate last generation was like 7.5?) either because of cost, or just because they are not that interested, either way, these gamers are going to get one hell of a value out of PS+.
For me, the only time I get value out of a PS+ title is when its a non-multiplayer indie title. Which doesn't happen as often as it did in the early PS4 days.
@gollumb82 I can't argue the price, since I don't know the exact model of Q70 you have (although the 55" Q70R is $1499 and you can get the 55" CX for $1599), which isn't much of a difference.
I can tell you that burn in with QLED, LED, and LCD screens is very real, and happens fairly often, its just less often than OLED.
If price is a concern and you have dramatically different prices, thats understandable; or if you have a use case that is likely to trigger burn in a lot quicker, that is also understandable; but if you are just afraid of burn in on OLEDs because of what you have read online, you should really try an OLED.
@gollumb82 If you are ok with "good enough" then a QLED or similar backlit tech will suffice. But if you want to go beyond good enough, to amazing, an OLED like the LG CX will take you there.
You just have to decide if your use case will put you in a higher risk category for burn in (lots of news, lots of sports, or other high contrast static content, 10+ hours a day). Keep in mind that burn in happens all the time in QLED, LED and LCD screens as well in these same situations, it's just a bit more forgiving.
@Menchi
You don't have to be a fanboy to understand that 4k is a waste of resources, its a comment that many analysis and PC gaming sites have been saying for the last couple years (including Digital Foundry, unless they are fanboys too?)
As for 30fps vs 60fps, unless a game has inconsistent frame rates, in 35 years of gaming (since 1985 on the NES) on PC and every major console, I have never once been able to tell if a game was 30 FPS or 60 FPS. As long as the game plays well, I don't really care.
The PS1 in many ways was technically inferior to the N64, the PS2 was inferior to the Xbox and GC, and the PS3 while more-or-less evenly matched with the 360 was difficult for developers to get that power out of it. The PS4 was a mixed bag (the base unit was a little better than the Xbox One, but the Pro was vastly inferior to the X) Yet Sony still managed to make a compelling reason to own a Playstation over their competitors of these consoles. That is why I am a fanboy.
On the flip side, the PSP was a generation ahead of the DS, and the Vita a generation ahead of the 3DS. Yet neither one gave a compelling reason to own them over their vastly inferior competitors.
Ideally, we could have both. The most technically superior, and the system with the most compelling reasons to play on it, but if we had to pick one, I know which one I would choose, every time.
@KathyQ I couldn't agree more. Sony has hit the ball out of the park with each generation, and while there have been missteps here or there, they have always pulled through and made an amazing product with amazing games. I would like to hear more information from them, just to help satiate me until release; but I don't need information.
@Juanalf Not at all. If a company has built up trust with you over and over again for decades, its easy to put trust in them yet again without needing to have every little detail spelled out. What constitutes a breach of that trust depends entirely on the person; but there is nothing wrong with extrapolating from past data.
Your choice is to risk a higher level burn in and have a dramatically better picture, or reduce burn in and settle with a backlit tech (where you lose your darker colors like black).
Image burn really depends on your use cases. Any content that regularly has high brightness, static (or near enough) objects on the screen displayed for hours at a time, will eventually cause burn in. Some examples of this are news and sports channels with the tickers/boxes on the bottom or corners of the screen.

The PS4 BluRay player (In The West) has the X and O buttons swapped (compared to every other PS, and every other media app on the PS4). It is extremely annoying. Pick a style, I don't care, but pick one!
Re: Guide: New PS4 Games This Week (28th September to 4th October)
@theheadofabroom The amount any one person is affected by motion sickness varies; but what causes it is the same.
At the most fundamental level, its caused by a large difference in what your senses tell your brain it should be experiencing, and what is actually being experienced by your body.
This is most often caused in VR by motion. How much, or how often, does the movement in the game disconnect from the movement in reality? This will tell you what the generic comfort level is.
Re: More PS5 Photos Emerge from Japanese Previews
@PhhhCough
Removing them shouldn't impact acoustics or air flow since they just attach to the side of the internal shell.
I don't think you would want to keep them removed, since its not likely to look very good with the exposed underside and attachment points visible. Those that hope for them to be removable are likely wanting replaceable faceplates.
Re: Bethesda Acquisition Will Not Impact PlayStation Immediately, Believes Pachter
@GamingFan4Lyf
If I were to guess, its not that people don't care, its that the other studios are not really going to make an impact.
Personally the only studio that saddens me is Arkane. They can have Bethesda and they can have Id, no big loss. The other studios I don't think I have ever heard of, let alone played any of their games, so I don't really care who owns them.
Re: The Pathless Ruled Out as PS5's First Free PS Plus Game
I would love to get some early indie titles. The only time PS+ freebies have been beneficial to me is when they offer the games I wouldn't normally buy (digital only titles) which generally end up being indies. That being said I don't want this game. I am not a fan of the "art simulator" style of games.
Re: Japanese Preview Image Shows an Actual PS5, Makes It Look a Lot Smaller
Re: Japanese Preview Image Shows an Actual PS5, Makes It Look a Lot Smaller
@TheFrenchiestFry "Selling out" means nothing without actual numbers. Microsoft knows that Japan is not a big market for them, so it's doubtful that they allocated very many of their limited launch units to that market, which means that it's easy to sell out.
Re: Spider-Man PS5 vs PS4 Comparison Shows Off a Generational Leap
Re: PS Plus October 2020 PS4 Games Announced
Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Demo Running 1440p, 60 Frames-Per-Second
Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Demo Running 1440p, 60 Frames-Per-Second
@gollumb82 If you are ok with "good enough" then a QLED or similar backlit tech will suffice. But if you want to go beyond good enough, to amazing, an OLED like the LG CX will take you there.
You just have to decide if your use case will put you in a higher risk category for burn in (lots of news, lots of sports, or other high contrast static content, 10+ hours a day). Keep in mind that burn in happens all the time in QLED, LED and LCD screens as well in these same situations, it's just a bit more forgiving.
Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Demo Running 1440p, 60 Frames-Per-Second
@Menchi
Re: New PS5 Features Discovered in PS Store's Source Code
@KathyQ
I couldn't agree more. Sony has hit the ball out of the park with each generation, and while there have been missteps here or there, they have always pulled through and made an amazing product with amazing games. I would like to hear more information from them, just to help satiate me until release; but I don't need information.
@Juanalf
Not at all. If a company has built up trust with you over and over again for decades, its easy to put trust in them yet again without needing to have every little detail spelled out. What constitutes a breach of that trust depends entirely on the person; but there is nothing wrong with extrapolating from past data.
Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Demo Running 1440p, 60 Frames-Per-Second
I don't like the souls games at all, but damn this looks good. They did a wonderful job remastering this.
Re: Demon's Souls PS5 Demo Running 1440p, 60 Frames-Per-Second
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Go with the LG CX.
