@NEStalgia that's mostly true yeah, I wasn't trying to say that it's going to be an issue, just that you can't assume otherwise for that long of a period.
Laptops are not a good indicator because they tend to stay powered with their battery most of the time.
Leaving something without power for awhile in this day and age is bad, even Nintendo did a recent PSA telling you to power on your Switch every so often.
@Medic_Alert I was against this feature when I first heard about it, because I thought it was just an extension of the PS4's feature, which crosses the line of uselessness into destructive/damaging. (Just wait until you have to recover from that power flicker!) but if its anything like the XSX feature (which we only really know about from YouTubers, since Microsoft didn't see fit to actually explain the feature as far as I know) then I welcome it.
@Medic_Alert As for the SSD space, it wouldn't really be a smart move to reserve that ahead of time. Each game could take up to 16 GB (depending on how the RAM could compress for that particular state in that particular game) and even reserving 2-4 of these can take 32-64 GB of space and this generation space is a premium, so it wouldn't be a good move to do that.
Maybe they could let you select the number and reserve that way?
@Medic_Alert That's not entirely true, especially with SSDs. If you leave an SSD in a powered off state for a year, you will likely return to some seriously corrupted data. Its random, so you might not; but HDD and SSD's corrupt regularly (as part of their normal existence, not just number of writes) and yes, this happens even in a powered down state.
Normally the drives will notice these corrupted portions long before they become an issue, and move data around to compensate, but you actually need to have the drives powered on for these mechanisms to kick in. Its less of an issue with classic HDD's (which can supposedly last a few years powered down without any data loss in most normal environments), but with SSD's it is more likely to happen.
That's not too important, since I don't think you were actually suggesting leaving it in a hibernate state for a year; but its a fun fact.
@Medic_Alert I always power down my PS4, I never "suspend" it.
I occasionally move my PS4, or unplug it, and to do that I have to power it down. Its quite annoying to have to power it on, and the TV, and potentially go into a game and save, and then power everything down, when you just want to unplug the system.
@Medic_Alert I know I won't ever use it, because I always save and close out my games before I move on to another one. That being said, if its done using the SSD storage like it does on the Xbox, I might start changing my habits.
Here is the thing though, it has to store the data to the SSD; which means if you are close to full, the feature will have to be limited.
@thefourfoldroot I think you are thinking of Quick Resume as just an expanded "Suspend/Resume" like the PS4 already has. Its not.
I originally thought the same thing. I think Suspend/Resume on the PS4 is a terrible feature and I have lost quite a bit of progress multiple times from system lock ups, power fluctuations/outages, and just accidently unplugging the system.
Quick Resume does not suspend, it hibernates. The huge difference being that it actually stores the game state to the SDD, it doesn't just hold it in memory. This means that if the system crashes, or powers down, or you unplug it, you can plug it back in later and still resume.
It doesn't matter what service you use, unless its Peer to Peer (which is extremely rare these days) any and all voice over the internet services you use are recording your voice and sending it off to their servers where its then sent off to all of the listening participants.
You trust that all of these companies are not keeping your voice data, what makes Sony any different?
Or maybe you don't trust them and you avoid all services that can transmit audio over the internet, in which case, just don't join a Party, and the PS5 will never transmit your voice audio.
Don't believe that Sony isn't "always transmitting" your audio? Its easy enough for anyone to verify this, so easy that they would have to be next level stupid to try it because it would be discovered by the first person to monitor data transmissions from their PS5. (Which you can be sure would happen, Day One.)
Marvel Avengers selling so well has nothing to do with the game, it has to do with the hype surrounding the game; but that will only get you so far. Now that the early adopters have gotten their hands on it, and word of mouth has started spreading, the sales will drop considerably.
To be clear, thats my take on the whole situation as an outsider looking in; though admittedly one that wants this whole model to finally reach the point where gamers want to move on from it.
I have never once used the party feature, so its not really an issue for me; but I can see how it would annoy people, and having access to the entire history when adding a new person is a no-no.
I think @DertieBertie has the right idea. Thats perfect. Just like "guest" accounts on the console itself.
@Ichiban I think thats one of the main reasons for the "feature". If you see all your friends playing on the new system, you are more likely to get one too. Like the obnoxious "Sent from my $PHONE_BRAND" email tags.
I wonder if it shows a PS4 when playing PS4 games on a PS5.
@MS7000 It depends on your definition of required. There is no technical reason why any feature requires PS+, its just another addition to add value to being a PS+ subscriber.
It's always a balancing act when deciding which features will be given to everyone, and which features will be part of your subscription service. Each choice is not going to please everyone; but as long as they don't lock away basic features (like when Xbox users couldn't watch Netflix without paying Microsofts sub fees) then I think its ok.
Having built in, spoiler free, help is going to be a game changer I think.
The problem with most walk-throughs or guides is that they are very incomplete. So if you are hunting for this or that collectable, or trying to figure-out how to achieve this specific task, that isn't required to complete the story, you are not going to be served well by most of these.
The guides that do go into this level of detail, often assume you played the game exactly like they did and your frame of reference is exactly the same. For example looking for "Collectable 8" in some random game, you will often get relative instructions like "Turn left from Collectable 7", which is a PITA if you already got Collectable 7 and you are not coming from that specific location. Now you have to back track to Collectable 7 to have the same frame of reference.
What I would like though is if you could "subscribe" to a help provider, not just rely on Sony or built-ins.
I was expecting it to be pretty terrible. What little we saw (there is still quite a bit missing) isn't nearly as bad as I had feared; but I would really need to get my hands on it to see how much it shoves those social features in your face.
@710King Its not as bad as I had envisioned it; but yeah I would prefer some kind of toggle that says: "I don't care about any social features ever, so please streamline the UI for me".
I am pleasantly surprised by most of this. The pin-able (picture-in-picture) cards are a nice touch. The social features don't appear to be in your face; but I would really like those cards in game to be about half that size. They take up way too much space.
Not a big fan of BK; but even at the chance of winning a PS5, its not worth the risk of eating at a place that is primarily staffed by teenagers that don't actually believe that COVID is a real issue. Thanks but no thanks.
@710King The UI is going to be pretty basic. I anticipate a PS4-like UI with some obnoxious social integrations that take up a large portion of the content areas that you have to slog through even if you don't ever use them. I actually dread the UI reveal.
@710King Yeah it doesn't really make sense as an advertising feature. Its almost like saying "The first next-gen generic, forgettable, button masher." It looks pretty but the always online and the general feel for how they are positioning the game, makes it a no-buy. It may be one of the only next gen games available at launch, but I would rather play a last gen game than to throw $60 away just to say I have a next gen game.
@RicksReflection I wouldn't think this would have much impact. Little Timmy's mom is likely there because little Timmy asked/pestered her for a specific console to play a specific game or to get the system that their friends have. It's not likely that she is going in there blind to spend $500.
@naruball That is likely from people that were undecided, or were going to get both but not sure on which one first.
I just noticed when getting a notification about replies in this topic that, S|X in some contexts/fonts can look like SIX which is clearly higher than 5. A coincidence, or clever marketing?
I don't get it. MS is spear-heading the drive to all digital / subscription, and GameStop is all about physical retail games. It seems like GameStop pushing MS consoles is just hastening their own demise.
I don't really know how much it has changed, but I remember back in the early days of Game Informer (GameStop's gaming magazine), it was a thinly disguised Xbox magazine that grudgingly talked about Sony and Nintendo products.
@TheIdleCritic I certainly care what it looks like. The presentation of any collection is an important aspect to that collection; but this change, while fairly ugly, is far better than, say, a GameStop "printed" insert replacement.
@djlard While I agree that the cases are a step back from the PS4 cases (its a weird inverted color scheme), I don't think they are that bad. And the PS5 actually looks pretty nice. Definitely a lot better than the PS3, PS4 or the Xbox (all).
@Crowley22g Maybe its step one in deprecating them entirely? Its inevitable that Sony removes the ability to download "legacy" titles once the number of downloads of those titles drop below some critical threshold, or the cost to maintain the infrastructure outweighs any indirect benefit that they get from it.
I don't like how Sony bundles purchased titles in the same category as PS+ titles. Why can't I see what I have bought separately? What happens when I unsub from PS+?
Also it looks like the "Played" category seems fairly limited and only shows a limited number of games.
I never really got into the themes on PS3 and PS4. I have tried quite a few; but eventually gave up. There is no real consistency (some are just backgrounds, some change the SFX, and some also change the icons) and often the SFX and Icon changes are abysmal.
If the PS5 titles can't be played with a PS4 controller, why would they will let you use the Vita (or PC) to play PS5 titles? What then is the reasoning behind restricting PS4 controllers? Could I use a PS4 controller to play PS5 titles via remote play on the PC? If so, that makes the restriction kind of arbitrary...
A game typically makes the vast majority of its money in the first 3-6 months. After that, the value of a game to a developer/publisher is practically zero. If, instead, you played on a gamers need to collect, or be the best, and continually sold them the same digital goods over and over again, you could stretch this revenue stream out for years with very little effort and risk.
I hope they make it useful to the core gameplay, not just an optional side-thing that doesn't really provide any benefit (like the conquest system from AC Odyssey).
@thefourfoldroot Look at the comparison screenshots, not the video. The video isn't very helpful in seeing the full scope of the visual changes, but the screenshots are night and day.
@710King I am not interested because it's not a common thing despite the claim otherwise and really doesn't exist outside of titles intended to be played with an online connection.
There may be a game here or there that is fundamentally broken on day one (like the one I mentioned) but these are extremely rare.
I am only pressing my point because I have played literally hundreds of PS4 and PS3 titles and have never once had a single one that required a day one patch or a download during install, that wasn't an online title.
@710King This has not been very common this generation. I have played nearly over 150 titles this generation, and not a single one had a required day one update, nor a mandatory download, with the exception of online only titles.
Your example while technically true, is stretching the definition. Call of Duty is primarily an online title with a "side" of offline, rather than the other way around.
You make the claim that it's very common, you should have no problem naming a few dozen at least. There are 4000+ titles on the PS4, so considering there are a lot of indie/digital only titles (which reduces that count a bit) "very common" should at least hit what, 1% of them?
As someone that exclusively buys retail titles, and go out of my way to verify they are playable without any download at all, it has been my experience that there are very very few titles that fall into this category.
@710King This is not true at all. If you disagree, name them, and link to articles or discussions about them not being playable* without a day one patch or a mandatory download.
I can name one, and its a very recent port (Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning) and the article about that game is here on PushSquare; but thats the extent of it.
*To be clear, I am defining playable as...playable. Can you complete the game from start to finish? I am not interested in hyperbole because the frame-rate isn't as stable or high as someones subjective opinion on the minimum frame-rate a game is playable at, or about bugs that are either avoidable or non-game breaking.
@BradT Thats not true at all. Discs install the game completely with zero requirement to download anything from the internet. (With the obvious exception of online based games) Day one patches are certainly nice, but rarely must haves.
There are some games (most notably on cartridges) that are collections and don't include every game in the collection on the cart, but those are extremely rare (I only know of 3, and only on cartridges) and they say so directly on the box.
Personally I pre-ordered this back when it was going to come out in April, but with each new delay it got pushed closer to the PS5 launch. I canceled my pre-order a few weeks ago and will happily wait for the next-gen console version to get the best (console) experience with the game possible.
@andjahiam With many PS4 games I often spend more time in load screens than I do playing the game. (Witcher 3 as a prime example!). Even if there were no PS5 exclusives, ever, I would try and get one as close to launch as possible for the decreased load times in PS4 games alone.
@SidNightwalker Are you saying that I should start liking games that I don't like so that I could like a system that has no games that I like? That doesn't really make any sense. Why not just play on a system that has the games I like already?
Keep in mind that I stopped using or caring about the Vita in about year 4 somewhere; so there could have been some great titles released after that, though I would always peruse my local game stores and never really saw the library grow.
I also avoid digital-only titles like the plague unless they are just so above and beyond great that they fall into the absolutely must play category.
@get2sammyb I agree. I dont see a point to quick resume. It just compounds the problems that already exist with the current resume functionality. If the system locks up, or you have a power fluctuation, or a power outage, and lose all of that progress you thought was preserved, you won't ever use this function.
@thefourfoldroot The Vita on paper was amazing. But the two touch screens and developers afraid to commit to console-ish budget titles on a handheld is what ruined it for me. I sold mine after a few years and went back to a 3DS with the postage stamp resolution
@thefourfoldroot Turn it off? How does one turn off the rear touchpad? It made Disgaea literally unplayable. Even a little bit of moisture from sweaty palms would trigger it constantly, scrolling through menus and switching attack targets at random. There was no way to turn that pad off when I got rid of my Vita.
If you mean in game settings for each particular game, none of the games that I had that I had issues with, had options to do this. I thought about modifying it at the hardware level once, and then just sold it.
@thefourfoldroot
I am a huge Sony fanboy, but the Vita was just...bad.
The rear touchpad I would always accidentally touch, and often it would trigger randomly even when I didn't (this was particularly annoying in Disgaea!) (I think it was ultra sensitive to sweaty palms). The front touch screen I would also accidentally touch (just the edges) constantly, because it was so close to the face buttons. This would wreck all sorts of havok in the games I played. Lastly the OS was atrocious. Like if Leap Frog decided to do a phone OS.
I could have suffered through all of that, if the games were there, unfortunately they were not. There was a handful of great titles, but developer support was just tragically lacking.
That is a pretty huge difference. I would like to know if the color intensity differences are just a result of the capture on the PS4 or if its really that washed out.
I was originally not interested in God Fall; but the recent trailers and gameplay had me second guessing that opinion. Always online, is a no-buy. Even if its patched out, that makes the retail copy unplayable without an internet connection and servers to download said update.
@AJDarkstar I can't wait to play it on the PS5 also; but I am going to wait until there is a PS5 upgrade for it, which won't come until "Sometime in 2021". I don't want to put 100+ hours into this in the PS4 version, if a little more patience will yield better fruit.
@Octane If this could be an option for the disc version, I would be a very happy gamer. I don't want any social features, I have 100 other devices to play Netflix on (and they generally do better!), I just want to have a game machine.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Promotes 'Great' PS5 Support at Launch
Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Promotes 'Great' PS5 Support at Launch
Re: PS5 Is Now Officially Just One Month Away
@andjahiam With many PS4 games I often spend more time in load screens than I do playing the game. (Witcher 3 as a prime example!). Even if there were no PS5 exclusives, ever, I would try and get one as close to launch as possible for the decreased load times in PS4 games alone.
Re: Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month
@SidNightwalker Are you saying that I should start liking games that I don't like so that I could like a system that has no games that I like? That doesn't really make any sense. Why not just play on a system that has the games I like already?
Keep in mind that I stopped using or caring about the Vita in about year 4 somewhere; so there could have been some great titles released after that, though I would always peruse my local game stores and never really saw the library grow.
I also avoid digital-only titles like the plague unless they are just so above and beyond great that they fall into the absolutely must play category.
Re: Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month
@SidNightwalker of course. That must be it. It couldn't be that there are simply no games that interest me on the platform.
I bought it on launch day and after 3 years I had bought exactly one game and it was a port that I already owned elsewhere.
Contrast that to the PS3 and PS4 which have literally hundreds of titles between them that I absolutely love.
Re: PS4 Games Will Take Advantage of PS5's New User Experience Features
@get2sammyb I agree. I dont see a point to quick resume. It just compounds the problems that already exist with the current resume functionality. If the system locks up, or you have a power fluctuation, or a power outage, and lose all of that progress you thought was preserved, you won't ever use this function.
Re: Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month
@thefourfoldroot The Vita on paper was amazing. But the two touch screens and developers afraid to commit to console-ish budget titles on a handheld is what ruined it for me. I sold mine after a few years and went back to a 3DS with the postage stamp resolution
Re: Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month
@thefourfoldroot Turn it off? How does one turn off the rear touchpad? It made Disgaea literally unplayable. Even a little bit of moisture from sweaty palms would trigger it constantly, scrolling through menus and switching attack targets at random. There was no way to turn that pad off when I got rid of my Vita.
If you mean in game settings for each particular game, none of the games that I had that I had issues with, had options to do this. I thought about modifying it at the hardware level once, and then just sold it.
Re: Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month
@thefourfoldroot
Re: NBA 2K21 on PS4 Is a Great Looking Game, But This PS5 Comparison Is Insane
That is a pretty huge difference. I would like to know if the color intensity differences are just a result of the capture on the PS4 or if its really that washed out.
Re: PS5 Console Exclusive Godfall Requires an Internet Connection
I was originally not interested in God Fall; but the recent trailers and gameplay had me second guessing that opinion. Always online, is a no-buy. Even if its patched out, that makes the retail copy unplayable without an internet connection and servers to download said update.
Re: Random: The Internet Is Discussing PS5's Mysterious Bolt
@nessisonett So it turns it into an Xbox?
I jest, of course! I don't mean to ruffle any feathers.
Re: Sony Expects PS5 to Outsell PS4's First Fiscal Year
I really wish platform holders told us the amount of units that are available to pre-order in Wave 1, to put everything in perspective.
Re: Leaked Cyberpunk 2077 Map Reveals the Whole of Night City
@AJDarkstar I can't wait to play it on the PS5 also; but I am going to wait until there is a PS5 upgrade for it, which won't come until "Sometime in 2021". I don't want to put 100+ hours into this in the PS4 version, if a little more patience will yield better fruit.
Re: Sony Didn't Allow Japanese Media to See PS5's User Interface
@Octane If this could be an option for the disc version, I would be a very happy gamer. I don't want any social features, I have 100 other devices to play Netflix on (and they generally do better!), I just want to have a game machine.
