Re: Round Up: Alien: Isolation PS4 Reviews Hold Their Breath

Ginkgo

I just want to feel like I am running around in an Alien movie. Will is do that for me?

i.e.Quiet times roaming dark corridors scared one is going to pop out from nowhere while I work towards some goal. Knowing a big battle awaits at any moment.

BTW, I have decided it is on my "wait" list for the moment. (something has to be). The fact that Polygon didn't like it inspires me to get it more though. There are a few more reviews out now, many positive. It is currently averaging 79, so they have to have pulled it off to a fair degree.

Re: Sorry, PS4 Racer DriveClub Will Only Support Thrustmaster Driving Wheels

Ginkgo

@Bad-MuthaAdebis Yep! I built a special table that leaned in and held the wheel. So I sat on my couch with Wide screen TV, surround sound, Pedals fixed in place at my feet, and force feedback wheel fixed hard to the table that leaned in over my lap. The table height and lean angle were adjustable for different people. It worked great.

I'm tempted to send in photos.

Re: Sigh! Even Sony Can't Resist Ruffling Fanboy Feathers

Yeah really unhelpful comment. There is no way that this game will sell more than FH2. That series has a long and prestigious pedigree. DC is unknown even if looking good. The only issue I see for FH2, is that it isn't long since the last Forza game, so not everyone will double dip. Still it being open world may change that up a bit, but then The Crew comes in as competition.

By the time Project Cars is released in Nov, Racing fans will be living the dream! Spoiled for choice.

Re: Feature: What Are October 2014's Free PlayStation Plus Games?

Ginkgo

Was always going to pick up the full Retail copy of Drive Club, but as it has turned out the free PS+ offering of Drive Club is perfect.

The Oct/Nov releases are the most insane selection of games I want to play that I have ever seen in such a short period. I am actually a little lost on how I am going to try and fit everything in that I want to. Its not possible, so some touch choices must be made.

It means that I will be picking up the PS+ free version of Drive Club to test rather than just buying the retail game. The Shadow of Mordor reviews/comments made that decision for me. Will still look at getting the full game down the track if it is as good as expect/hope.

@Paranoimia With GT5, I bought the wheel for about $100, then built my own desk for about $50 out of wood. It is pretty sweet, still have it. Then spent around 150-200 hours playing GT5. At time I brought it out at parties, had friends and the whole extended family racing. Uncles, aunts parents etc. One of the best gaming investments I have every made. It is folded away at the moment, but was hoping DC would give me an excuse to get it out again. Oh well.

Re: PS4 Racer Project Cars Plans to Pelt Down the Tarmac at 60FPS in 1080p

Ginkgo

@Kell Andersen Holden Kell, that was an Aussie joke slipped in there and I'm not sure everyone will get it!

@Faruko The resolution / FPS debate these days gets a lot of time, because of comparisons across systems. When comparison the exact same game that has "some" value, when comparing different games, its means nothing.

Saying that a phone can do 1080p doesn't mean anything in and of itself. You can generate a a single cube dancing around the screen in 1080p / 60 fps and it wont be very taxing to display. 1080p is just the screen size. The more polygons you have in the image and especially the animations, the more lighting, partial, shadow effects, LOD, anti-aliasing. These all add complexity. The game designer has to balance things and choose the best combination. So this "aim" will not ever go away. Because there is always a push for games to look better, more realistic. As they they add more detail to achieve that 1080p and 60 fps get harder. They will have to compromise somewhere else. The best compromise will depend on the game in question. Some will sacrifice 60fps, some 1080p (I hope not) and other polygons, or effects etc.

Re: Review: Murasaki Baby (PlayStation Network - Vita)

Ginkgo

@Bliquid Thanks. I get you.
Just heard the "game-play is more important than graphics" argument too many times, and had thought you were heading down that road. I'm certainly not trying to argue the reverse.

More simply that trying to pit though two concepts against each other is at best unhelpful, at worst pointless. They are two sides to the same coin.

Interestingly, most of the reviews from other site are considerably more positive than this one. (I haven't played the game yet). Suggesting Sammy's review is not representative of the majority. After years on this site I respect Sammy's opinion, so the disconnect makes me more interested to try out the game for myself!

Re: Review: Murasaki Baby (PlayStation Network - Vita)

@Bliquid I don't personally agree with driving an wedge between games and art. There are many examples where games have pulled it off. Journey and Child of Light come instantly to mind.

Form and function are interconnected, and enhance each other when both done well. Apple knows this more than anyone. It appears that this game, unfortunately, just didn't quite work.

Re: Rumour: Minecraft Maker May Be Purchased by Microsoft for $2 Billion

Ginkgo

@rastamadeus There is no question. Assuming the rumour is true, it IS a brilliant tactical move (though expensive!).

As someone who loves Minecraft, owns a PS4 and not an XBO, I just don't personally want it to happen. Honestly though, MS needs to do something, so I could imagine this being true. Just don't want it to be.

Re: Rumour: Beyond: Two Souls May Still Be Bringing Next-Gen Emotions to PS4

Ginkgo

I can see this working as a next gen release, and sell.

Personally, I enjoyed it, there were some great moments, but also many flaws and yes I finished feeling like the game had let em down. Not because it was bad (its not), but because with some simple changes, it could have been so much more.

Just a couple of examples, the sequence of memory was silly, and just confusing. It needed a central story-line and then flashbacks, rather than the endless jumping around. I also think that the game lacked puzzles. There were there in places, but not enough. If there is no game over screen, then there still needs to be a challenge to move forward. In some parts there was no challenge at all.

If David Cage is doing this, then I hope he takes the opportunity to do Beyond 2.0. Because some simple tweaks could transform the game from patchy to great, in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed Heavy Rain much more.

Re: Review: Velocity 2X (PlayStation 4)

Ginkgo

I find it really hard to get excited about these sort of games - 2D scrolling retro stuff, this included. It takes something "really" good to rise above and grab me. Not convinced this will, just not my style of game, but given the review score (and free on PS plus) will certainly give it try. Who knows, it may yet surprise me.
