Re: What Year Is It? There's a New PS3 Firmware Update Out Now

JonTheGod

I have two PS3s hooked up at home (lounge and bedroom). Currently playing Spider-Man 3, and attempting to cycle my platinum runs through PS3/4/5 in sequence.

They need to make either the PS5 Slim or the PS6 fully backwards compatible with PS1-3. I'm hoping that the rumoured detachable disc drive for the new PS5 model will give folks the choice between a standard drive and a premium drive which can read CDs (for PS1 and PS2).

Re: Poll: Would You Still Buy PlayStation Consoles Without Activision Blizzard Games?

JonTheGod

I looked down the list of Activision franchises and I don't see a single IP that I would miss. Unlike the Bethesda buyout which hit much harder.

Sure, the potential loss of COD will hit Sony's revenue - BUT - this could actually turn into a positive.

Sony will likely be on the backfoot now, which will make them fight harder. Under Jim Ryan, they've been getting cocky and making some fairly anti-consumer decisions. Sont had been approaching pre-PS3 hubris levels recently and it wasn't looking good. Hopefully this will make them start vying FOR the consumer again, like they did mid-PS3 when they were clawing back public opinion.

This could be a good thing.

Re: PS3 Received a New Firmware Update, By the Way

JonTheGod

I played loads of PS3 last year, maxed out all the trophies on 10 games:
InFamous 1/2/FoB, Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary/Underworld, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, Rain, Beyond Good & Evil, Papo & Yo.

I'm gonna go back and play some more PS3 titles when I'm finished with my current game (Shadow of Mordor). Maybe Resistance, Killzone, FF13... dunno yet.

I love my older games. I wish Sony would embrace backwards compatibility the way they used to, and the way Xbox currently does.

Re: Fans Wonder if PS4 Pro Has Been Discontinued

JonTheGod

All the comments about dropping the Slim and making the Pro the only model for PS4 available rrrrrrreally don't understand how the market works.

Firstly, the Pro was aimed at people who were happy to pay a premium for a 4K experience for maximum graphical fidelity. That market disappeared overnight when the PS5 released. The vast majority of people who would have been interested in the Pro will now prefer the PS5 for the exact same reason the Pro existed. Sure, the PS5 is currently as rare as unicorn poop, but that will change as production continues to ramp up.

Secondly, the PS4 console market will increasingly shift towards the casual now. Keeping the Slim in production will mean the PS4 achieves as low an cost entry point as possible. THAT is the market that PS4 is now geared towards.

Quite simple really.

Re: Resident Evil Village Goes All the Way with PS5 Feature Support

JonTheGod

@OneManDroid
PSVR has been confirmed to work only with PS4 games via backwards compatibility. No PS5 games, or PS5 versions of games, will use PSVR. For example, Hitman 3 players will need the PS4 version of the game if they want to play it in VR.

It may be that VR compatibility is added to the PS5 versions once PSVR2 comes out, but don't hold your breath.

Re: How Well Do You Know Final Fantasy IX?

JonTheGod

@HotGoomba 5/20 is 25%. In a multiple choice quiz with 4 answers, picking randomly with no knowledge would give you 25%. Getting this score is statistically expected as average. You are not special.

Re: PS5 Launch Is a 'Massive Challenge on Every Front'

JonTheGod

@Matej I totally agree. It's not like people are going to wait until the price announcement before they start saving for the console. Assume the console is gonna be £499 plus accessories/games. I'm factoring in £800 for launch day costs. I don't need to wait for an announcement for this. As long as we know before release (obviously) then that's fine. It's certainly not at the top of the list of things we need to know.

Here's my priority list of unknowns that need to be known:
1. Backwards compatibility (how PS4 games work & whether PS1-3 games work).
2. Launch date.
3. Launch games.
4. Interface (UI, Trophy/Store enhancements).
5. Price.

Re: Poll: What PS5 Information Do You Want Most?

JonTheGod

In terms of price, I'm budgeting £500 for the console; anything less is a bonus that can be spent on accessories or games. You don't need the announcement of price before you start saving for it; if you're planning on being an early adopter then you should already have this in hand.

UI demo would be nice, but it's not particularly necessary to see before I buy. Happy for.it to be a nice surprise.

We already know the launch window, so I'm expecting November - maybe 20th. It's not urgent info though; we'll find out in due course.

PSVR has been confirmed to be compatible with PS5. No further comment needed really - although would be nice if my PS4 camera was compatible.

The only thing that I want to hear about is BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY! Most of the other options are temporary and related to launch; get them out of the way and it no longer affects your gaming life. BC is an ongoing impact on my gaming life. I need to know whether PS1-3 games will play on it. Then I can de-clutter my TV unit and not have 4 separate PlayStations plugged in - each with their own set of 4 controllers. That's a lot of shelf/drawer space cleared up! (And a ton of CEX credit!)

It also means that I can get into some old games that I've been wanting to play but haven't because I've been spoilt by instant suspend/resume functionality of the PS4. I want to play PS2 games without wired controllers and memory card management. I want a console that can play them all so that my games are safe from retro hardware obsolescence. GIVE ME FULL BC ON PS5!!
