Re: PS4's Virtual Reality Headset May Just Be Revealed on 18th March

Squiggle55

Basically I just want a $300, comfortable version of this http://store.sony.com/wearable-hdtv-2d-3d-virtual-7.1-surround-sound-zid27-HMZT3W/cat-27-catid-3D-Personal-Viewer

If it tracks my head it'll entertain me as a gimmick for a certain amount of time, like the wiimote did, but it's not how I want to play. I want to strap the thing to my head and lay on the couch and feel immersed with a giant screen in front of my eyeballs while I play with my dualshock.

Re: Six PlayStation Hits Arrive in NA's March PlayStation Plus Refresh

Squiggle55

Even though I've been very lucky with PS+ and have very rarely already owned the games, I feel for the people that already own big games that come to PS+. I know it sounds overly complicated, but I wish Sony would install a system that rewards purchasing. They have smart people working for them. They can detect when someone already digitally owns a game. Make customers feel like they win when a game is given away that they already own. Think of something creative. Make them feel good for buying things.

Re: Talking Point: Should Sony Respond to Microsoft's UK Xbox One Price Cut?

Squiggle55

@Shaolin Apple has the potential to make bigtime waves when they finally release a product marketed as a home console with a controller. Put that app store on a box with all the functionality of Apple TV, market it as a game console with a controller. Sell it for $100. I think there is dangerous potential there to get into a lot of homes. And devs will continue to go to where the install base is.

Re: Review: Rambo: The Video Game (PlayStation 3)

Squiggle55

You're right, it's depressing that quality developers don't get to make games and good games are cancelled for bad movie-based games. Makes me wonder how negotiating goes with games like this. Does the publisher decide first that they want to spend as little as possible making a game based on the rights to a movie they've purchased, and quality developers turn them down when the publisher approaches them and tells them they want them to make a Rambo game but they can only spend $50,000?

Or is it the other way around and devs make a junky game and approach a publisher by saying "It ain't great, but it's Rambo, and it'll probably make more than it cost us to make it. Which wasn't much."

Re: Talking Point: Should Sony Respond to Microsoft's UK Xbox One Price Cut?

Squiggle55

Offering this bundle with Titanfall (the only thing they have going for their entire ecoystem at the moment) and lowering the price is a clever move while Sony is struggling to keep stock. But it's undeniable that it shows desperation, will frustrate early adopters, and should ultimately be seen as a "victory" by Sony making MS react this way. Hopefully people still just want to have the better console

Re: Rumour: Sony Will Strap on Its Virtual Reality Headset Next Month

Squiggle55

I would be willing to pay up to $500. If I had to guess I'd say it will be $350.
I will absolutely buy it if I can use it as my screen for any game. I don't care if every game programs in special controls for looking around, I'd be just fine using my dualshock for the games that don't support motion tracking. And like someone else said it would be nice for the video to be on the TV at the same time for someone else to see.

Just imagine how awesome this would be with two headsets for a co-op game like Borderlands.

Re: Opinion: EA Found Its Call of Duty Killer, and Committed a Titanic Mistake

Squiggle55

@Gamer83 I think there really might be some truth there about EA's relationship with Microsoft. EA really wanted to move into a restrictive DRM future. They bailed big time on Nintendo after promising an unprecedented relationship and I think that relationship might have soured when Nintendo didn't let EA do all of their online nonsense on Wii U. And quite possibly the decision to go from Titanfall 1 year exclusive to complete exclusive was made after E3 and could have been slightly influenced by Sony sticking it to DRM.

Re: Opinion: EA Found Its Call of Duty Killer, and Committed a Titanic Mistake

Squiggle55

@Shingi_70
I'm going off of this: "However, contrary to what the company wanted you to believe, the game wasn’t a true exclusive in the sense of the word at the time – a trait that remained true even when you ignored the overlooked Xbox 360 and PC iterations of the release. “[A PS4 version] is definitely not out of the question,” lead artist Joel Emslie told Eurogamer.net last summer. So-called industry insiders claim that the port was even in the preliminary stages of production."

Re: Wow, the PlayStation 4 Has Sold Over 5 Million Units

Squiggle55

@JaxonH I know, right? It seems like a no-brainer to me. I'd very much love to have a real Nintendo account to be proud of and I'd very likely instantly start buying all 3rd party games on Nintendo instead, as long as companies weren't forced to release an inferior version of their game on Wii U of course.

Re: Wow, the PlayStation 4 Has Sold Over 5 Million Units

Squiggle55

@JaxonH
And Nintendo has the added bonus of sitting back and seeing what Microsoft and Sony have done right with their ecosystems. Miiverse is a great start, and it looks like they are moving towards a universal account system. But imagine if they start a universal achievement system with something like star coins, and take it one step further and tie it in with Club Nintendo and rewards. How incredibly successful and addictive would that be. Instant loyalty.

Re: Wow, the PlayStation 4 Has Sold Over 5 Million Units

Squiggle55

@JaxonH I agree completely about the quality of Nintendo's games. There's no question about that. They have a magic to them that is for the most part unmatched. This is why their struggles are frustrating because, like I said, I think the fix is simple.

I disagree that 3rd parties are lost forever to Nintendo. And I think winning them back is vitally important. And, like you said, it's all about money. I agree that making a game for the Wii U is not profitable. But that is because of 2 reasons: The install base of the Wii U is too small, and they have to put in extra work to port the game. The solution to this is very simple. Sell more consoles and make your hardware technically similar to the competition. It's been overly complicated porting to Nintendo ever since the N64, hasn't it? Make it so 3rd parties can make money and they'll come crawling back. It's not like they'll ignore Nintendo out of spite or something.

To sell more consoles and build the install base from launch we get back to problem number 1: marketing and brand problems. They need to forget about the casuals and focus on gamers again. Ditch the puns and higher some youth that has a better understanding of modern gaming. Now they have a HUGE hill to climb because of their image this last decade. But it can be done. Higher the right publicists and decision makers and come out swinging like Sony last year saying all of the right things and delivering what gamers want. "We have absolutely everything gamers could want, AND Nintendo 1st party games."

And I know it sounds like such a small thing, but I think a universal achievement based system is vital for loyalty. It's completely trivial, but I will choose a 3rd party game on Sony over the same game on Nintendo every single time now. Because if everything else is equal I might as well earn trophies. It's about building an ecosystem. It's about loyalty. It's about that collection mentality that so many gamers have. In-game achievements don't do it nearly the same way. And I know for a fact it would help. Because I'm a huge fan of Nintendo choosing Sony because they refuse to build a modern gaming ecosystem.

Re: Wow, the PlayStation 4 Has Sold Over 5 Million Units

Squiggle55

@JaxonH You're dead on about Nintendo. They make the best games, and their hardware is great when viewed completely objectively. But their problems run very deep. They make gigantic mistakes in important areas like image and branding. I'll say it until the day I die that naming it Wii U was a huge mistake. The casual audience they luckily nabbed last gen is gone forever. And in their relentless pursuit of the non-gamer they have alienated lots of gamers out there (not me) and really hurt their overall brand. Investors want them to chase after the casuals on phones, but I think they should do the exact opposite and try to attract gamers again.

But with that said, the problem is so simple to solve: 1) release a console that is technically on par with the current generation and easy to port to. 2) Build the type of online ecosystem that most gamers want and expect these days. Take our Mii and make it a full-fledged avatar. Give us a real online account system. And make up some sort of achievement system. And of course more and better online play. If all 3 systems are equal Nintendo wins on games. I wish they'd figure that out. The hard part is making the best games out there, and they seem to do that with ease. The easy part should be this basic infrastructure expected of a modern console and I can't for the life of me figure out why this isn't a priority for them.

Re: Review: Doki-Doki Universe (PlayStation 4)

Squiggle55

"Perhaps the biggest problem is that there’s very little challenge. With no way to fail, we ended up following an almost production line approach to progression: talk to the inhabitants, summon some random stuff, find all of the collectibles, move on to the next planet, rinse and repeat."

Bingo! Too bad too. Because the artwork is absolutely fantastic and I love the personality tests. There was lots of potential here.

Re: Review: Outlast (PlayStation 4)

Squiggle55

I started last night. All I can say is that it starts out great. Wonderful atmosphere. Very scary to play. I read somewhere today that I should check out some livestreaming of this game on the hardest setting. That sounds like fun.

Re: Pachter: PlayStation Now Doesn't Have a Prayer of Maintaining Subscribers

Squiggle55

I see his point, but it's not like they've been advertising this as a way to rent and play new games on the PS4. By the time this service gets going almost all of the big hits of the PS3 will be 2 years old.

I don't foresee a lot of success with the subscription model, unless it's incredibly cheap. I see lots of success with the renting games model, especially if the catalog is complete.

What if they stopped the IGC and replaced it with unlimited access to Playstation Now? Imagine that success.

Re: Weirdness: Don't Livestream Steamy Activities on the PS4 Like This Russian Couple

Squiggle55

@Jaz007 Something tells me those 1,000 gamers knew what they were watching. I'm not too concerned about protecting adults. If an adult turns that on and doesn't want to see it they should be able to just laugh and turn it off without being too emotionally scarred. As far as protecting kids goes, like I said parents should put on parental controls so their children can't watch a live video stream of strangers, that's common sense. I don't want to see Sony cutting back any options, but I can see them making it so you can only see live feed of friends (which I'm kind of surprised wasn't the case already).

Re: Weirdness: Don't Livestream Steamy Activities on the PS4 Like This Russian Couple

Squiggle55

I agree with rjejr that it is too be expected. And I would go one step further and say that it's mostly fine with me. The only part about it I find wrong is that they were using a kids game to do it. Heck, set up a whole channel for adult content for all I care. I haven't watched anybody's live streams yet so I don't know exactly how it's setup, but to me this is just another example of something that can be taken care of with proper parental controls. If you have a child set their controls so they can only see the content of their friends, and control who they can add as friends too. Problem solved. Sony doesn't have to play parent like Nintendo with Swapnote. Playing parent is for parents.

Re: Idea Factory Agonised over Cut Cards in Steamy Vita Exclusive Monster Monpiece

Squiggle55

@Artie Good point. I think, like plenty of other people, that graphic violence is much more psychologically concerning. And I don't believe in censorship in any form of art. Parents should absolutely be responsible for what their children watch or play. And the government should only get involved with censoring parents when it is protecting the rights of someone else.

@cloud7794 Good point concerning the business side there. If a game with a certain rating simply isn't carried by retailers at all, then that would make business sense to censor yourself. Of course I'd still like to see everyone grow up and not have to make decisions like this but that's not happening anytime soon.

Re: Talking Point: Do the December NPD Results Flag a Flaw in PS4's Strategy?

Squiggle55

First of all, I'm not concerned at all. I think the fact that they sold out is a good thing.

Second of all, who are these consumers that so badly need a console that they buy the one they don't want just because the one they want is sold out? If the PS4 sold out before I put in my preorder there's still no way I would go buy an Xbox instead.

Thirdly, I voted that they should have put more focus on inventory in the states. Like someone else already said, it makes the most sense to focus on the major market where you have traditionally NOT been the undisputed leader. They were wise to make Japan wait the longest for this very reason. And many smaller countries are very likely to follow the lead of the major market winners.

Re: Review: Don't Starve (PlayStation 4)

Squiggle55

@Cloud7794 I think the problem is that it's very addictive in the beginning, when you only survive a few days and learn something new to help you the next time. But the first time I die after surviving several months I'm not sure if I'll have it in me to start completely over from the beginning.

Re: Review: Don't Starve (PlayStation 4)

Squiggle55

One tip is that there is some sort of altar that you can activate as a sort of back up life somewhere on the map where you will resurrect at the altar and you can go find your dead body and loot. But it seems like when you use it there are more monsters on the map out to get you or something.

Re: Review: Don't Starve (PlayStation 4)

Squiggle55

This game is quite challenging. I'm only on my third try and the most I've survived is 2 or 3 weeks. I haven't even gotten to a point where I'm making a farm or anything like that yet. I'm afraid that this type of game will eventually wear me down and make me quit when I die after getting far.
