Vita games please! I also would have voted for showing off remote play if that was an option. I want to hear them repeat for everyone to hear that remote play is really happening and is really required.
People truly need to think long and hard about this. I don't care if you don't "mind" having to connect to the Internet, or if you usually buy your games new anyway, or if you never sell games or rent games or lend them to friends — you still need to think long and hard about this. It is absolutely wrong. This will change everything. These are big rights being taken away. This is a murky abyss that completely changed the future of the industry and the legacy for our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. I want them to be able to play my games if they want. Please just think about if that's what you want.
This is what I want Sony to do: Announce that an online connection is not required, thus publishers CANNOT block single player on their disks.
It really does look like a great month. And, with 3 evergreen titles leaving the IGC on June 11th, I kind of suspect a surprise from E3 as well. I already have Virtue's Last Reward, which I think is probably the best game of this bunch, so I voted for Machinarium, because that's the one I'm most excited about trying.
I vote for not including it, if only to further increase the odds that devs choose remote play over camera functionality. I also don't care about it and wouldn't mind lowering the initial price of the console.
I think ps4 and vita will both get the attention they deserve without a doubt, and I have faith in Sony to show off some great games. The only thing I fear is they will be tempted to show off some family friendly move things again, so that's what I voted for. I hope they decide that quality titles like Knack is all the family friendly stuff they need. And of course I hope they come out and say "we won't block used games at all". If they don't say this clearly in the presentation, to me that obviously means that they will.
@rjejr Lazy may or may not have been the wrong word choice, but the fact is remote play would have been equally nonexistant on the ps4 as it was on the ps3 if it wasn't made mandatory. As a consumer I don't care if the developers are lazy or uninterested in the feature, all I care about is that they do it.
@rjejr you are certainly correct that devs won't bother releasing the exact same game for ps4 and vita anymore, but who really wants them to do that anyway? But you could also argue that some people would choose the cheaper vita version of a game anyway, especially if they want to be able to play the game in a car or a plane or in the woods or whatever.
@elarkos the quality of remote play over wifi will depend on the speed of the wifi. But I fully expect the direct connection from the ps4 to be a seamless experience bc of the ps4s power.
Now we're talking! Making it mandatory was absolutely necessary and the only thing that will work. Great news. Now as Sammy said the only thing left for Sony to do is make sure remote play is easier to implement than a playstation eye gimmick so nobody uses it as a loophole or something. Fantastic news though love the word mandatory.
So do you think it's safe to say Nintendo didn't play along with EA's plan here and that's how we went from unprecedented relationship to publishing no games for the system? And do you really think EA has the balls to do the same thing to Sony as well? They'd be throwing away money. Microsoft fans might still buy the xboxone no matter how Microsoft screws them. But I still say Sony needs to go
the opposite direction. Make EA do the online pass again or whatever if they
want, but don't play this game. Follow Nintendo's lead here. Honestly I don't see many people switching "sides" this gen. Some people may buy the xbox if EA tosses them some exclusive content, but I believe just as many people would choose Sony based on pro-consumer policies like ps+, free online, and not blocking used games. I'm not saying that making this decision would crush Microsoft, bc people will certainly buy it no matter what, but it will help, and it will be a big difference between the systems, and inarguably it will foster much goodwill in the gamer community.
I still think gamestop stands to gain no benefit from this. Maybe if gamestop was the ONLY place that could activate used games then that would be a clever partnership. But if you can pay the activation fee on your own then all this would be is an extra charge for gamestop digging in to the big moneymaking part of their business. I still see them liking Sony more if they don't mess with used games.
Gamefly is a business that should be very nervous right now. I don't see any reason for publishers and platform holders to play nice with them.
I still think Sony should say no to anti-consumer policies and the customers will respond. Publishers be damned. Maybe they'll give Microsoft extra content or something but they'll end up with an anti-consumer PR mess on their hands if they want to play that game.
I am blown away that MS is going through with essentially blocking used games. Forget about not showing off enough games in their meeting and focusing too much on entertainment apps. Blocking used games is the tangible, unbelievable, insane difference that will absolutely crush MS if Sony doesn't follow suit. This is that tangible difference that is actually significant enough to cause people to switch loyalties. It's really amazing.
I was not very impressed at all. I was secretly hoping for some sort of secret breakthrough in kinect technology and virtual reality gaming or something big like that. What it boiled down to was a pretty cool entertainment box for controlling your TV, and probably a little bit better social integration with your TV than the WiiU, and 15 yet to be named exclusive games.
The big partnership with the NFL may be pretty misleading because it means nothing if they don't get the contract for Sunday Ticket that they didn't mention.
Ultimately I don't care about waving my arms around to control things, I'd rather press a button, and I think Sony has better focus on the gamers this time.
I think the big thing that Microsoft is missing is off-tv play. Sony and Nintendo both have it figured out. I don't need something that recognizes my arms waving around, I need to be able to still play my games if the wife and kids are using the TV.
best joke on Twitter from Gamasutra: "Someone in the audience should have yelled 'Xbox, Play Games!'"
@neumaus @get2sammyb I am definitely a home that would benefit from remote play. More and more the only time I have for gaming is in the evening when we're already in bed. And my backlog just sits in my ps3 downstairs in the living room crying out to me.
@rjejr I agree. I think their wording using words like "virtually" and "your favorite" is sufficiently vague as well. And especially Yoshida saying he'll be "heartbroken if it doesn't make it into all launch games". None of these quotes inspire confidence in me that Sony isn't pulling my leg again. Wake me up when someone says. "I guarantee that remote play will work with all ps4 games except where the playstation move is required. Don't even worry about it, it's guaranteed, that's simply what the ps4 does, there's no doubt about it." None of this "I sure hope remote play works with most games".
Implementing a regular update time and making your download list more manageable are my two biggest things.
I've managed to figure out the new store pretty well, so it's not like I ever have any trouble finding what I'm looking for. And my store actually opens pretty quick now, and hasn't crashed on me or anything since launch week of the new store.
But I think what they need to work on is making it a better browsing experience to find things I'm NOT looking for. Correctly categorizing all games into genres and providing "most downloaded" and "highest rated" lists for all genres and really keeping that stuff up to date would be nice. They should also fix the rating system. I should be able to rate digital version of full games that I own on disc, and people should have to play a game for 30 minutes or an hour before their allowed to rate it. And include user reviews as well. And I also agree that the purchase process needs streamlining. They fixed the ridiculous process for free ps+ content to where you just have to hit download, but "preparing" the download and all that and having to hit "download in background" is lame. Of course I want it to download in the background.
LOL. "Players didn't respond to the format". Obviously getting rid of this is a good thing. But it probably just means microtransactions in big budget games.
All this is is a reason for me not to buy the PS4 right away - so I'm not sitting there again with a fancy new machine while Sony spreads their resources around. But hey it's their business.
In some ways I am happy for the installments. $2.99 is a very small entry fee to see if I like this game that looks pretty good. In other ways it is frustrating. I am sure I won't want to have to wait for the next installments. I'd rather experience the story at my own pace.
After reading these comments I now see the problem even more clearly. With a 32GB card I can delete games I've beaten and that sort of stuff, and it's never stopped me from buying something I wanted to buy, but I have already had to delete games I haven't beaten, and it's obvious that the prices of the memory cards ARE stopping some people from buying games. With a move towards a downloadable future and a focus on these great indie PSN games Sony needs to take down this barrier.
I'm looking forward to this too. I hope the story and characters and exploring are all really good, because that's what makes games like Professor Layton really shine.
I bought the 32GB at launch. I just pretended it was the price of the system. I'm basically out of space now, though. And I would certainly welcome them both releasing a larger card AND lowering the prices.
I cannot understand this decision by Capcom. The game would be better on the Vita, period. I don't care how many people own the 3DS and how many own the Vita. Surely they comprehend that people in Japan would buy the Vita specifically for this game, completely negating that argument.
I'll be sad if the vita fails, and sad if devs stop making games for it, but, honestly, if I can remote play all of my PS4 games on it that's practically all I will need.
Lowering the price of the memory cards would definitely help I think. I say come out with a 64 GB and price it the same as the 32 GB one is. Then cut the prices on the existing ones.
Maybe they're lowering expectations so they can beat their projections for once and give some good news. They have to have something up their sleeves. They have yet to try a price drop, and if they announce a few surprise games and remote play is universal with ps4 then away we go.
Out of curiosity, would they be given access to the supposedly basically finished Battlefront game? Where does something like that fit in when someone like Disney buys LucasArts?
In theory and according to the scoring policy, a 5 is not necessarily a bad thing. But in reality not many games score that low or below. I like the idea of using the 1-10 scale correctly and I support that notion, but even on this site traditionally a 5 looks pretty bad.
But with that being said, just start throwing out more 5's on reviews of truly average games and it will really drive the scoring policy home for people.
I wonder how much Microsoft pays for this kind of stuff. Anyways, like you mention in the article, I think the primarily important thing is who sells the most consoles this holiday season bc of the snowball effect. I agree that it will mostly come down to price and whether or not Microsoft does anything stupid with being always online or blocking used games. My prediction is this generation will be close. PS4 will keep things tighter and maybe even beat Microsoft.
These are the types of sales that I like. I'm tempted to go ahead and buy FFA now since it will come with the Vita version and R&C 4 when they finally come out on PSN. I'm also tempted by Thieves in Time as well as Secret Agent Clank.
And I'm really excited about trying the multiplayer on Zombie Tycoon 2. Fingers crossed that it's the kind of simple addictive multiplayer I've been craving for the Vita!
