@BranJ0 Only thing Microsoft has going for it right now is Game Pass. Look at Halo Infinite's poor launch or their generally weak first party support this last year; there's little reason to get one besides it being available when the PS5 isn't.
This reads to me like Square Enix just tossing CD under the bus and trying to pin this whole mess on them. I just kind of doubt that a studio that previously never made a GaaS before suddenly decided that this game was the perfect time to do it.
Really feels like there was no winning with this addition. The Insomniac games set such a high bar for Spider-Man gameplay and combat, and it was never going to be possible for CD to avoid comparisons.
Sounds like they really phoned it in for this expansion though, as if it wasn't already abundantly obvious that the team is ready to put this whole debacle behind them.
@nessisonett Outstanding move. I did get the plat in Origins, but I think that permanently burned me out on AC. I couldn't even get 30 hours into Odyssey and haven't picked up Valhalla. To me, the repetition eventually just kills the experience; if you've seen one enemy camp, you've seen them all.
I don't get why this was such a big deal to some people. I've seen all this talk online about runs taking 2-3 hours, but most of my runs were 30-45 minutes. Sure, there's room for exploration, but not that much. What are people doing that's padding their runs so much?
It's good to see them being so bold, but is this really something they can control? I was under the impression that the stock problem is due to the global chip shortage, which is way bigger than the game industry. Unless demand for everything else suddenly drops in the next few months, I don't see how they can secure the silicon to make this goal a reality.
But Sonic Adventure didn't lay the current foundation...? You could make the argument that Heroes was technically SA3, but every game after that has been mechanically quite different from the Adventure games. I don't really get what he's saying here.
I agree, though I wish I didn't. It's nice to have a week in the summer where you know there's going to be at least a few really interesting new reveals. Sure, big reveals come all through the year, but there's never a way of knowing when the next one will be.
Still, I barely followed what happened with E3 this year, and the Nintendo Direct was the only presentation I bothered to watch live. It feels very much to me like E3 is a solution to a problem that's already been solved in the past decade, and that problem was the disconnect between game companies and their audiences.
Man, I saw this headline saying sign-ups and first thought Sony was finally starting a backorder list for getting a PS5. Guess I'll keep turning the crank like the clown I am and hopefully get one from a retailer before 2030.
Press is press, though. Even if this isn't something Silent Hill related, I didn't even know what Abandoned was until I saw this. That's the whole point.
I think this is a bit overblown. PS5 is definitely more powerful, but saying that a cross-gen game is being "held back" by the older hardware feels misleading. Not only is the gulf between PS5 and PS4 smaller than between PS4 and PS3, but I seriously doubt that something like Horizon Forbidden West would have ever been designed in a way that's literally impossible to run on PS4.
Now that doesn't mean it'll run well on PS4 when it comes, and I'm sure the load times there will be much worse, but let's not pretend like it's going to be some massively innovative release that could only be realized on next gen hardware. It's another open world action game, and it'll do most of the things that open world action games on the PS4 already do, just shinier and faster.
@Amnesiac I think the long term ramifications are still pretty mean, though. Think about it, how many major game companies have gotten the embarrassing honor of getting one of their games kicked off a major platform for quality reasons?
While it's true they've made a lot on this game, they've now had five months of losses on a potential revenue stream. More importantly, their torpedoed reputation will affect how the public reacts to whatever their next game is, and I'd wager that's where we'll see the effects of this disastrous launch.
@nessisonett Yeah, my issue with it is that this movie feels like it's releasing six years too late. More importantly, it feels weird that they're setting this 'prequel' in the recent past and not in her pre-Avenger days when she was more of an anti-hero, which I think would be much more interesting. I'm sure it'll be entertaining, but we already know how her story ends and I don't see it adding much more to the lore other than setting up her sister to replace her later.
I wouldn't be against them doing more games in this series. Lost Legacy proved they can make compelling adventures without Drake (as if that was ever in doubt), and I vastly prefer the gameplay and style here to Last of Us.
I want one, but the hype has definitely died down for me as I've realized that there's still not much reason to get one. I got a PS4 at launch, and I'd say it was about two years before I was playing it more than the PS3.
Right now, I just want one so I can play PS4 games in their best possible version.
In my mind, the PS5 still hasn't really come out yet. Sure, some people could buy it starting in November, but I view the rest of this year and the next as a sort of 'early access' period before the generation properly kicks off. When almost all games are still cross-gen and exclusive projects mostly have vaguely defined release windows, I see little reason to take the leap to a new console.
Totally agree there, and I also don't do any that require me to play the game through more than twice. I don't mind a replay if it's relatively short or a NG+ kind of thing, but playing through one game three or more times in a row is exhausting any way you slice it.
Glad to see this! The original game was pretty great, but there was enough jank that it definitely could've used one more QA pass. I'm sure a new version would smooth over all the issues.
My library has had a copy of this game since it launched and playing it would be as simple as me going there to pick it up for a few weeks, yet I can't even be bothered to do that. I'm sure it's a fine enough game, but the most rousing praise I've heard about this is that it's 'alright'.
I'm all for them just doing a new AC every few years and taking the time to really build out each one. I know the last two have been divisive because they aren't 'true' AC games, but I found them both to be nicely well-rounded (if rather bloated) open world games. Don't have Valhalla, yet, but I'm sure it won't be long till it's up for twenty bucks.
I tried the free trial up through the first expansion on PC and I just can't get into it. I know everyone says you just gotta push through and then it gets better, but I'm not really seeing the draw.
Wow, I was hoping I could get one by April, but maybe that's not realistic now. The upside is that there still isn't much must-have software on the PS5 yet. I still don't feel that I'm really missing out on anything yet, but I'm gonna be salty if these things still aren't on shelves when HZD 2 and ratchet and clank are out!
Fantastic news, I was worried this series would be put on ice for another few years before they'd take another crack at it. I loved Shadow of the Tomb Raider but it seems it didn't really find much of an audience.
I just got back into my Vita this month, been slowly picking up some games I missed on the storefront. Really great hardware all around, so sad to see that it never really had it's time to shine.
Your point about the perceived 'pressure' to reach tier 100 is exactly why I've personally never been able to get into these. Same reason I've never subscribed to any MMO's.
The way I see it, the time I spend gaming is supposed to be something done at my leisure, something that I do because I feel like it on that particular day. A battle pass or subscription turns at least some of my game time into yet another task for the day because I 'have' to play that game or I'm wasting the money I spent on it.
@BloodEagle Legitimately curious, how did you even do that? I checked in once a few months ago and there were NO people online. Servers might still be up, but I've long considered the platinum to be impossible.
@ORO_ERICIUS I agree. I haven't bought it myself, but from all the footage I've seen online, it looks like just another cool open world shooter. I haven't seen anything really game changing here on a mechanical level, and while it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a super innovative game, it does at least need to be a stable one.
@nessisonett Lol imagine if that was actually the reason they released it! I just see headlines like this and hope management gets taken to task over it. It’s pretty clear to me that the devs did the best they could with impossible expectations placed on them from higher up the chain. If that isn’t addressed, this’ll just happen again with the next game.
What a mess. I think this really highlights the gap between the executives and the dev team. Guaranteed those who were working on this day and night knew they should bite the bullet and delay into 2021 but the higher ups probably mandated that it come out before Christmas. Now they get the fruits of that decision.
It's 'irrelevant' only because their company seriously depends on this game doing well. This is their first major release in over five years, and yet they couldn't be bothered to make a good first impression with it. If they didn't fix it, I can't imagine there being anywhere near as much hype for their next big release. Even if they do fix it, I think they've forever lost that 'good guy' reputation they had before.
Really makes you wonder how high the numbers would be if Sony actually had enough stock to meet demand. When the PS6 comes along in however many years, I hope they just swing for the fences and mass produce tens of millions in advance.
@huntbearpig Same here, I've put in maybe fifteen hours. It's a good game, though I've honestly never understood where all the hype comes from. Great storytelling, but the combat is a mess and the map has that 'Ubisoft syndrome' of just scattering loads of copy and paste points of interest everywhere. Maybe I'm just missing something...
@iCaramba Check your library! I really think the whole concept of a library is one of the most underutilized things of modern times. They've grown into so much more than just places to get books!
@AFCC Depends on where you live, but most libraries have a collection of PS4 games you can borrow from for a couple weeks at a time. A library in my area has Crash 4, so I can just pick it up from there for free if I ever want to play it.
