The headline of the article is accurate, however if this is what the vita has to offer so far for 2014 then as a non owner im not tempted in the slightest to purchase. And thats the current problem for the vita.
I unfortunately haven't been able to play TLOU yet but after talking to my brother and mate about it I know im missing something special. I dont think i have ever heard them speaking so highly of a game before! (Well maybe with OoT with my bro, but that just backs up my point!). Cant wait to finally play this game, sometime, somewhere.
Vita numbers have been hovering around 20k in japan which is a sure improvement over its previous 8-10k. 68% increase is disappointing to say the least. Wii U had an increase of 350% and it still doesnt say much. I still hold hope that it will pick up as awareness of remote play increases, however, Third party is most like going to remain minimal And i personally dont think Sonys first partys are suited to produce convincing software for the Vita (despite a few great examples already). So at this stage I cant see Vita getting anywhere near psp. Thats my analyst hat thinking
@BornOfEvil What markets are Sonys products currently the best? Gaming (ps4), arguably cameras(compact etc)...? Now think about how many markets they are in. Do a quick google search of top 5 "insert category here" of 2013 and you will quickly find that Sony tops very few of these. As I said, this is not a trend isolated to Sony but when a company (in this case OR) specifically focuses on a few products, they tend to be of high quality.
For these reasons I think OR will better Sony in VR.
@get2sammyb I obviously dont know for sure also but my money is on Oculus. A product like this has to be extremely fine tuned in many areas and it seems to me the guys at Oculus (and the newly acuired talent) are well aware of this and are making all the right moves. Its also not uncommon for Sony to put out a product just to get in the market. In fact I can think of several markets off the top of my head that sony have entered with an inferior product.
Edit: Not unlike many other companies I should add
@Shellybird27 A discussion is far less interesting when everyone is in agreement. I personally think its great to read a different opinion. I often comment when I have different viewpoint regardless of whether it will be perceived as negative.
My opinion is that its a niche product and will only sell in quantities reflecting that. No matter what market. I doubt it cost sony much to produce so really no harm done. Great to see vita numbers stabilizing
I don't think it will sell well in any region. As someone who loves new gadgets, I'm struggling to justify a reason to purchase (although I would buy one if I could). If I'm struggling im sure the majority of consumers will also. I don't think many people want to play Vita games and just as many want to buy a new console to play ps1&2 games... Even if it is a cheaper option. Its even limited in developing nations as it requires Internet access for the most part.
Wow DF made it sound like Resogun is terrible to play via remote play. I have been waiting for this article. So by numbers its the worst technically of the 3 but by reading comments in forums, the real world results are OK.
Hard to say if OK is good enough for me. I don't care about image quality at all, its the latency that has me concerned as I'm a big player of fighting games and platformers.
Glad to hear people are satisfied. Whether that's a honeymoon opinion or not, only time will tell.
@Cloud7794 I mentioned I was talking from a consumers point of view. I know there are many benefits to the producers and I understand why they do it. Im just always confused when I read comments about game droughts and how people are happy a game has been delayed so that now there wont be a drought. You could always buy it now and wait, or even better, not buy it now and buy it in February (for example). It seems like people want sony to spoon feed them. (not trying to sound nasty but i genuinely dont understand)
I have never understood the issue with having many games released at the same time - from a consumers view point.
All this talk about benefits of delayed games giving people time to finish other games.
What is the benefit for us as consumers to spread out title releases on purpose? Its not like games have a use-by date. Give them to me all day 1 and I will play them across the year.
Call of Duty being the biggest seller is no suprise. These console sales are insane. It will be very interesting to see how it maintains its momentum over the coming months.
@MadchesterManc Lelouch is absolutely allowed an opinion and quite often has decent ones. Im also allowed to comment that I think his recent opinion is absurdly biased.
If an opinion is not the norm then it tends to be due to a factor of bias, whatever that bias may be. Lets use the aggregate review scores of mario and knack to determine the norm and then see how far off Lelouchs opinion is I.e strength of bias. Either Lelouch has a bias towards brown coloured repetitive adventure platformers or Sony.
Also, only people thay don't play mario games say that its the same game rehashed over and over. The characters are reused but the game play is significantly different.
Mario at the olympics is slightly different to mario world /s
@Lelouch Knack looks more fun to play than the new Mario?? Wow you really do have a strong bias. Knack looks about as fun as a cardboard box. Lets wait for review scores to determine which is better. You also said COD was not competition to Killzone... Sony is great but not everything they do is always going to be the best
@Malouff No you can't do this, I read this question being asked to Sony (maybe on this website) and they confirmed that if you want the digital version then you need to download it even if you have the "physical" edition installed.
@get2sammyb Yea I agree, if this is not going to be some crazy HiFi targeted headset like their previous products, then they will be well aware of the price point that they need to achieve to make this enticing to the mass playstation user.
I think the price will really depend on what industry it is targeting and how it is marketed. If it is strictly a Playstation accessory then I think it will be 'affordable'. I am so excited for all this VR tech. Childhood dream coming true. The good stuff will probably not be around until 2016/17 but its definitely coming.
@Lelouch haha. Well im definitely not expecting to be able to play Knack from my school cafeteria (or wherever that was in the Japan Promo). Benefits of living in a Japanese CBD i guess.
@Sanquine This video shows probably the most highly polished first-party title on PS4, running in what looks like ultimate conditions.
As much as everyone else im really hoping remote play is as great as sony says. Im just a little sceptical (and rightly so) due to previous experience with tech.
We will all see once its out in the wild, but as much as you guys seem to think that its daft that Im still dubious, I think its daft that you believe all that is shown to you before you try it yourself.
Here's hoping my scepticism is unwarranted and we can all play happily tucked into our beds
Sadly, there was nothing in that video that impressed me. If that's the best the next gen has to offer out of the gate then im not excited. To me it looks like a slightly spruced up FPS that we have seen time and time again this gen.
I remember playing COD Modern warfare for the first time (I was late to the PS3 party) and was blown away compared to PS2.
Obviously my expectations were too high for this gen
Have never played Journey however just watched the IGN review and... WOW!!! Even the review clips were spectacular! Would look amazing on PS4.
I do agree with @benrawr though - "Every review ... just reads to me as a pretentious attempt to make the reviewer seem like he's discovered his own deep and meaningful life lesson from it"
When speaking about the beauty of the no communication multiplayer, the IGN reviewer said "its some of the most meaningful multiplayer I have ever enjoyed in gaming"
ahhhh.... no. Im sure its a cool experience but enjoying actual socialising with your best friends on couch co-op games should be - by far - more meaningful to your life.
I havnt heard or read any other reviews but I can imagine people going a little over board.
Will definitely be one of the first games I play on PS4 (if not the first!) when i get one.
@Z9DaftRadio This is great! I can imagine the direct connection to Ps4 will be a lot more stable for a lot of people. However the range may not be the best.
I didn't really mean zero lag but so close to zero its not funny. if you read the initial interviews with Iwata relating to Wii u development he stated they had a very hard time creating the minimum latency for games to function effectively.
My point is I doubt remote play will work well for the majority of people
@get2sammyb But the point is that 95% of gaming requires ZERO lag for it to be a decent experience. I highly doubt remote play is going to be a realistic feature for the large majority of owners
"We also recommend that the PS4 system be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference."
I guess this matters for people who are on the fence about which console to buy and its nice to know my console of choice is the graphically better of the two but its Sonys exclusives why I need the ps4 so wouldn't have been bothered either way
@charlesnarles Yea you are right, its nice for a product to be able to evolve over time. It's just a preference of mine that the consoles and games are released fully functional. Im happy to wait for this stuff. Like games patching in multiplayer or big chunks of the game... I would rather everyone hold their horses and let the game or console be completed before release
Quick note relating to previous posts of mine: I actually think delays are great if it means a better end product. I just think marketing this as launch was a bit off.
OT: I am really excited for this game. Not only because it visually looks stunning and highly immersive as a result but because the game features sound right up my ally
I don't like this modern idea that incomplete products can be put to the market with the attitude that they can be patched later. Maybe its the old school gamer in me. However this update is relatively minor and its great its being released launch day. The wii u had a larger update and the 3ds was only half of what it is today at launch.
It's stuff like this that still has me sceptical about Remote Play. Initially this feature was touted as being able to play the game right from the get go while it downloaded in the background. Had me quite excited. Obviously there was always going to be a small initial download but 7.5gb!?! For most of the world that is still a significant wait. It's still a great feature and a very welcomed addition but it does make me wonder just how well other features like Remote Play will work.
@get2sammyb what I was trying to say is that the "launch game" does not exist anymore and that is what sony was using to sell consoles day 1. In this industry people (like a lot of people on here) are forgiving for these practices. My opinion would be that a company like Sony should only be able to promote a feature (e.g. launch game) once it is solidified as being accurate - in the case of software this would mean that development is complete.
This issue is definitely not a Sony thing, it is an industry trend which I think is severely misleading to consumers. Giving examples of previous occurrences does not justify this ongoing behavior. Some people dont care and that's cool but I think in general it just aint on and this delay of communication by sony is such an obvious move to ensure no loss of pre orders.
Second edit haha: But there are definitely bigger issues in the world to worry about ;p
I think it's unfair to say someone is overreacting to this just because it does not bother you. I personally feel like this is a huge breach of consumer rights and its a trend that needs to be dealt with. Sony was selling their product based on features (launch games) that now don't exist. Getting a refund is an option that should not be required.
