Re: Farewell Old Friend! Sony to Cease Selling the PlayStation Portable

eLarkos

@Damo That might be changing... Portal 2, Half-Life 2.
Sony are doing it right though, focusing on PS Now. I think the best option would be to open PS Now to all android and Sony compete with their own hardware on an even field. Sony have so much expertise in PlayStation that im confidant they could create better hardware for playing PS Now than Samsung for example. Whether that's a phone/gaming device (xperia play) or a dedicated gaming device (Nvidia Shield style).
I don't believe in locking down great features to entice people to buy your inferior product. Compete hard, use your strengths hard, win hard.

Re: Farewell Old Friend! Sony to Cease Selling the PlayStation Portable

@get2sammyb When it was revealed all I could think was why why Sony why?! It's current troubles were so easily foreseen. I also don't think it's an amazing device. It has 2 sticks and plays games, but even now for all its needs it fails e.g remote play and PS Now controls. I really think a better device could be made. How is the Nvidia Shield? I have never used one.

I think it's probably a good time to stop PSP. "Focus" on Vita.

Re: Gory Brawler Mortal Kombat X Gets Over Here in 2015

eLarkos

@KALofKRYPTON Yea "in-game footage" was wrong of me to say. I more meant that I doubt that whole trailer was gameplay. I agree, there's a good chance that is the engine and I also have full faith in the MK team. MK 9 is great. I just want the speed to be RIGHT up there!

Re: Talking Point: Is Watch Dogs Proof That You Can Have Too Much of a Good Thing?

eLarkos

@Davros79 These Talking Point articles are designed to instigate discussion. Often the author writes not from his personal point of view but more of a devils advocate role in the wish to spark (hopefully) constructive debates. I think this article is great as I have thought about this issue in past.
You are correct in saying that its too early to concretely comment on WD but as the title alludes to its just being used as an example to get to the real issue at hand.

Re: Talking Point: Is Watch Dogs Proof That You Can Have Too Much of a Good Thing?

eLarkos

"When a game becomes diluted because it tries to do too much, that's when I see a problem." This is how im feeling about a couple games lately.

"Well, that's the discussion, right? If all of that additional content can be ignored, then what purpose does it serve other than overwhelming the player?". I agree. Of course you can ignore it but I dont believe that's the point being made. My interpretation of this comment is that if the additional content of the game is so weak that its ignored then it would be better left out. The reason for this is that resources are limited and the resources used on this weak additional content could have been focused to create a stonger core game.
The discussion is whether you like all this (perhaps) "weak" content or if you would prefer just a stronger core game.

I personally love side quests that are well crafted, but to answer the question of whether I believe a game can have too much content - definitely.

Re: PS4 Exclusive The Order: 1886 Is Indeed Disappearing into 2015

eLarkos

My problem isn't with developers taking their time to make a game, its the delays. These companies have been in this industry long enough to (more) accurately forecast project development times. People choose to purchase a system at a certain point in time knowing not only what games are available now but also for games that have been given a release date. If games are being held back due to cramped holiday seasons or false release dates are given to persuade buyers to purchase early (driveclub) then its a disgrace. This is deception. This may seem a little extreme but consumer manipulation is something that many law makers spend hours devising laws to help protect us. Companies need to be held accountable for their actions, not excused. The right and responsible thing for these companies to do would be to hold off on a release date until they know it will be achieved so consumers can make INFORMED decisions on when to make a purchase.

If consumers stopped buying games that were delayed (or buggy of course), do you think you would see a reduction in delays?

Consumers have power but we are making excuses for the same companies deceiving us.

Re: How Does Watch Dogs Look on PS4? Tap into the First Mission Here

eLarkos

Being confused with old vs current gen. Being happy with last gens performance.
Really does show the diminishing returns in graphical/hardware performance. I do think if Nintendo had secured solid 3rd party this gen the 'weakness' of its hardware would not have been an issue. Of course, the ps4 would still be the go-to for its power packed first party games.

Re: Actually, Watch Dogs PS4 Won't Run at 60FPS in 1080p

eLarkos

@MadchesterManc Some people clearly just prioritise resolution and frames over pretty rain and light effects. Its a balance, and where you personally stand on that argument is up to you. Now im most certainly a resolution/frames kinda guy because gameplay is far more important to me.

My understanding of the mario kart argument is that people are using that as an example of an incredibly nice looking game that is 1080p 60fps (and running on inferior hardware!). Why can't PlayStation developers target 1080p 60fps and then scale graphics to match that? Surely it will still look fantastic.
If you prefer maximum flashy effects then obviously this is not the objective you want devs to work to.

My guess is the next wave of ps4 games (2015) will be 1080p 60fps - no last gen worries, better dev skills, optimised engines etc

Re: Sony: The Economics Don't Work for Blockbuster Vita Games

eLarkos

@Paranoimia Not "absolutely wrong", you clearly missed my point.
"Both Uncharted Golden Abyss and Killzone Mercenary are visually stunning games which do both series justice." - I agree.

Take The Order for example. It has both Sony and MS fans clamouring for it at this stage solely for its graphics. In fact many people would have been influenced to buy a ps4 because it is demonstrating that it can produce graphics like The Order. People love graphics. Now do you think the same MS fan boys and regular Sony COD dudebros (sorry for using that but its a good illustration) were going nuts over KillZone mercenaries graphics. No, only Vita owners were. They are just relatively fantastic for a handheld. No MS graphics fanboy was dying to need KillZone mercenaries.

So where does that leave us? It leaves us with Vita owners who are incredibly happy their system is getting a great game, and everyone else not bothered because its bigger ps4 brother looks way better.

You may think im over estimating the population of dudebro gamers (although i dont) but thats not really important. Why? Because they are exactly who Sony marketed the Vita towards. Sony cant afford to keep making these huge resource intensive games if theres not many people wanting to buy them.

Re: If You Want to Get Angry, Know That DriveClub Will Let You Pay for Cars

eLarkos

I wonder what implications all these "pay money, get now" schemes are going to have on society. In all seriousness, growing up having to persist with incredibly difficult games like ghosts and goblins, in part, tought me that hard work pays off. Mummy couldn't pay for me to clock that game.

Edit: Now that those brutal old games have tought me well and I don't have as much time to game, I like these type of microtransactions

Re: Sony: The Economics Don't Work for Blockbuster Vita Games

eLarkos

I saw this coming the day it was announced. The state of this industry did not happen overnight. A lot of PlayStation fans talk about how great graphics are and that they would prefer a racer at 30fps with pretty lights. If this type of people are a large chunk of Sonys market then why did they expect them to get hyped for a "console" quality handheld when it simply isn't. Any COD (uncharted etc) released on Vita was going to look and play inferior and therefore not appeal to graphics lovers. The resources needed to create a good looking (*still not console quality) vita game are outrageous these days and Sony surely should have realised this. Seriously everything about the Vita is a wrong decision (expensive components, proprietary memory and charging). I know its owners love it but thats obviously not good enough.
A huge part of the 3ds success is in its target audience. Mario kart 7 doesn't look like a console game but Nintendo fans tend to generally not care about this. Release a game like that on vita and its review score would be a 5 for looking like a ps2 game. That's not knocking Sony fans that's just pointing out a difference in the audience.
Its easy to say in hindsight that im right and of course it could have been a huge sucess, but it isnt , and i do believe it was obvious it wasnt going to be.

Re: Rumour: PS4's Power Will Slide to Unlock 60FPS in Watch Dogs

eLarkos

60fps is not nearly as needed in Watch Dogs as it is in Driveclub. Still, it would be nice. People that complain about people wanting 60fps please understand two things:
1. Your complaints about peoples genuine concerns are worse than the complaints of the ppl you are talking about.
2. The difference between 30 and 60fps is real.

Re: Sorry PS4, You'll Have to Wait for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's DLC

eLarkos

This "next-gen first" malarkey is just more marketing bogus. The game has been designed to be able to run on last gen consoles and thats the Full Stop. Yes character models, physics, effects will all be ramped up on new gen consoles but higher level elements (you know, the actual important next-gen stuff) such as level design, game mechanics etc all were designed with last-gen consoles in mind. Im not knocking this game or taking anything away from the developers im just saying we shouldn't be fooled by the marketing.

Re: How's Sony Doing Financially Now That the PS4's Out?

eLarkos

This article was great reporting IMO. Really gave a concise acurate representation of the situation.

Sony is in trouble and have been for quite some time now. In saying that, Kaz seems to be an excellent CEO and I think he has what it takes to sort Sony out. Trimming fat (*Sony is obease) is the perfect start.

Sony have been making overpriced, inferior products for years, scraping by on brand name. Quite rightly the market has spoken and Sony are now in the position they are.

Re: There's a Downside to PS4 Racer DriveClub's Outrageous Visuals

eLarkos

It saddens me more people care about pretty lights bouncing off trees than they do about gameplay. Watch Frozen if you want to look at pretty images. As a gamer and racing fan, im disappointed with this decision. Even mario kart 7 on 3ds is 60fps because they recognised the importance. At least the landscape shots on the TV ads will look good. Too many games on Sony and MS consoles are designed to look at. No matter how sad the state of affairs are over at Nintendo at the moment at least they still pride themselves in making gameplay number 1 priority. And ppl say they are for casuals... Hah!

Overreaction rant complete

(Will still probably enjoy this game)

Re: Feast Your Eyes on 7 Minutes of Destiny Running on PS4

eLarkos

Looks awesome. Right up my ally for a FPS. With this alligned to Sony and quite possibly the next Titanfall (which will undoubtedly be significantly better) on ps4 also, I really dont see much more hope for xbox. Yes a few* die xbox lovers will buy it and a few hardcore gamers will buy both consoles, but its really going to be hard for a lot of gamers to not buy the ps4.

*few = few million

Re: Here's How Renting Games with PlayStation Now Will Work

eLarkos

@rjejr Another reason (in addition to what others have mentioned) for streaming is that the game is actually being processed in the cloud. So theoretically your smartphone could play the most powerful games. Eventually this all leads to a unified gaming service where you simply choose whatever form factor of hardware you prefer. It just seems a little strange at the moment because its the PS4 they are using to beta test it. Demos should definitely use this service like you suggested though.
