Re: Project CARS' Latest Bump Pushes It Back to Mid-May on PS4

eLarkos

@get2sammyb Completely agree that these delays are the right thing to do. As you say the developers seem to have realised that buggy messes are not the way to go.

My two hopes are that these delays are not just all talk and they will actually put out a quality game upon release, and that developers announce delays as early as possible to give the consumer the information they deserve.

Re: Reaction: Project Morpheus Seems Impressive, But Also a Hard Sell

eLarkos

@KillTheG1mp you can pretty much kill the idea of this being compatible with the PC. Not only would Sony need to make the PS Camera PC compatible, they would be solely relying on third party devs to implement the morpheus as PlayStation isn't about to start producing PC games. Highly highly unlikely this will be PC compatible.

Re: Convincing Publishers Is Project Morpheus' Trickiest Challenge

eLarkos

The PS4 is not powerful enough to run any decent games in VR however large AAA games could have VR sections where you put on the HMD and experience the game in a different way. e.g Uncharted 4 could have a museum where you could inspect different artefacts to solve puzzles. Or Gran Turismo could have a garage where you can inspect the cars in VR. Or COD has a shooting range.

There are numerous reasons why this will probably not happen but I think it is a better strategy for a larger market rather than simple robot tech demos. It clearly positions Morpheus as an accessory.

Re: London Heist Is Project Morpheus' Answer to The Getaway

eLarkos

" The biggest takeaway, though? It runs silky smooth, and looks sharp on the PS4."

So non-virtual reality enthusiasts are supposed to get excited about reloading bullets into a gun in what looks like a corridor-game?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the idea of VR, but there is just no way that a big enough chunk of the 20m PS4 owners are going to be excited about the Morpheus experiences when the Latest-and-Greatest COD, FIFA, Assassins etc look and play significantly better on their TV.

PCs will have the grunt to play the latests games in VR but more importantly PC gamers love these techy, prototype like experiences - Playstation owners don't.

It's great R&D though and who knows, it may pay off for Sony in the future.

Re: Ouch! Mortal Kombat X's Brutalities Have Got to Hurt

eLarkos

Quan Chi gets the biggest laugh from me, standing in the rain of blood and guts.

Im actually pretty disappointed with most of these as they are more or less just additional Fatalities. Brutalities are meant to be a good old fashioned ultra combo beat down.

Re: Colossal PS4 Sales Propel Struggling Sony to Profitability

eLarkos

Sony's Smartphones and Tablets are one step away from being the best on the market. Choosing to run android as their TV OS was the right decision to make at this stage. Their cameras are consistently some of the best on the market. If they continue as is these areas have a good chance of performing well.

Ironically, I think it's Playstation where they have the most vulnerability and some incredibly smart decisions are going to be needed to be made in the near future in order to continue being successful. Decisions I can't think of...

Re: Look, The Order: 1886 Isn't All Corridors and Cobbles

eLarkos

FYI: The term 'Corridor Game' doesn't literally mean the game is played throughout indoor corridors.
That image does nothing to dispel the idea that this will be a close quarter corridor game.

I have nothing against games like this though so I hope this turns out to be really great.

Re: PS Vita App Near Will Cease Searching for Game Goods Soon

eLarkos

@naruball Where we disagree is in the fact that in no way do i believe it is "a great piece of kit" today or even when it was released. I think many other people also believe this and this is the reason why i believe its sales are so poor. It's sales haven't dropped off recently, they were never good.
Many things affect a product's sales and we can have a lengthy discussion about the WiiU if you want, however you can't take what im saying about the Vita and directly compare it to the Wii U. They are completely different.

The 3ds hardware achieves exactly what Nintendo's strategy positioned it for. The Vita's hardware doesn't (hang on, what exactly was their strategy?? Mini PS3?). When I say its a bad piece of hardware i'm not talking about pixel count im talking about it as a proposition to its target market.
The 3ds doesn't really need to be changed much, if at all, to completely satisfy its target market. The Vita needs several major changes to be valuable to its wider target market. Thats not a good example of good hardware.

Re: Spotify Streams to PS4, PS3 in Partnership with PlayStation Music

eLarkos

The PS4 is getting Spotify while on the other side Microsoft is gearing up to put Windows 10 (Windows 10!) on the X1. For PS4 owners this is great as Spotify is the best music service I have tried (I really want to like Google All Access but it's just not as good as Spotify). In the grander scheme of things though this is a relatively small achievement.

@adf86 Assuming the PS Spotify is a fully featured app then the positives of Spotify over other music streaming services is that it has a strong community of customised Playlists. It also an adequate 'Radio' service and its music discovery tools are better IMO. You should expect the majority of your favourite music to be there and very quick load times regardless of your internet speed.

Re: PS Vita App Near Will Cease Searching for Game Goods Soon

eLarkos

I have voiced my disappointment in the Vita many times on this website but this article really brings back memories for me.

The Vita was a failure from the start. It was a console with zero direction and its weaknesses shone through since day one. I remember seeing Near and rolling my eyes. It was such an obvious response to StreetPass it hurt. The whole Vita was just one big 'lets throw everything at it'. Why is StreetPass so great? Because Nintendo actually created the concept with fantastic ideas in mind. Why is Near so s@#t? Because Sony cluelessly through it in. 3G....

Its great people are enjoying their purchase and that the Vita died quick enough that not many people who would be disappointed bought it. But when people say the Vita is a great piece of kit it really baffles me. It is so easy to think how simple changes really could have made it great. It's not and sales prove this.

Re: DriveClub Was the UK's Best Selling Exclusive of 2014

eLarkos

@rjejr There are many reasons why cheap PC boxes were not viable 20 or even 5 years ago. A major reason is that there was no suitable PC software or developers pushing living room PC gaming because generic PC hardware was not suitable to be put under a TV. Another major reason is because the industry of living room entertainment was a fraction of what it is now. Valve have taken 10 years to conquer traditional PC gaming and now could make a move for the living room. The time happens to be now and that's why im bringing it up. My semi-hypothetical scenario involves Valve pumping resources (OS, developer support, controller support etc) into living room gaming. This is quite possible and im interested in how Sony would combat it. Better online services? Better game controllers? Better game selection? Better looking hardware design? Superior hardware performance? Im not sure they are capable of any of those these days bar design. Which you would think is a major factor however the XBO proves that its not Sony dominated disc-based hardware (entertainment hardware in general) during the 90's and this gave them a significant advantage when gaming heavily relied on discs. Sony hardly dominates any consumer level technology now, certainly not digital services and clearly their first party developers are not putting out top 5 games.
Times change and to say that Sony were great back in the day is not a good way of predicting that they will continue to lead the pack. PS4 will most likely be the last home console with its primary method of game distribution being physical. Maybe the PS5. Will I be buying the PS5? Only if its better than its competitors.

Re: DriveClub Was the UK's Best Selling Exclusive of 2014

eLarkos

@rjejr I agree that Steamboxs in their current state/price are not an issue for Playstation. But whats stopping Lenovo putting out a cheap PS clone box that runs Steam? Runs not only the top 5 games on this list but also has far superior online functionality. Obviously this wouldn't kill Sony because nothing cheap would but a serious version of this would pose a massive threat.

Sony and MS consoles practically are PC boxes these days. DLC, Online distribution, F2P, MODS etc. Heck, Xbox runs windows. Whats the next gen going to hold? How will Sony's console be better?

I have definitely made my point now so wont continue to repeat myself but would love a response where someone can convince me that Sony actually has a competitive advantage moving forward. So far brand recognition is the big one for me.

Re: DriveClub Was the UK's Best Selling Exclusive of 2014

eLarkos

@get2sammyb And I think you're living in the past. If you think that Sony's ongoing competitive advantage in the face of increasing competition is to throw money into marketing and hope people by your product then I think you will be in for a massive shock when people start to actually buy the better product.
You do realise that if Valve were to take the living room seriously they would partner with a hardware manufacturer? Samsung, Lenovo, etc. Distribution would not be an issue. Especially once consumer demand is there.
Im not talking about 2016 here. Hell, im not even talking about 2017/18/19.
Once again this is all on the basis that a company could actually make a better (or equal) console to Sony.

Im asking a question where Sony's competitive advantage lies if another large player enters the market such as Valve. So far you the only stratagy you have given me is to pump money into marketing. I didnt ask this question in hate towards Sony, im genuinely curious. Im happy you responded because I cant think of the answer, however, I disagree with you and I hope i have explained why.

@ShogunRok Yea I don't think Valve are wanting to enter just yet either. It was more of an example to try to figure out how Sony could actually compete. This list proves they cant compete with exclusives.

Re: DriveClub Was the UK's Best Selling Exclusive of 2014

eLarkos

@ShogunRok But that is precisely my point. People bought a Playstation to play games that a are available on other systems. If Valve offered a great console that had these games AND a much superior catalogue of other games that Playstation doesn't have then why buy a Playstation?
Yes, brand recognition is huge, but Xbox came into the market with zero brand recognition and took a massive piece of Playstation's pie in its first generation.

@get2sammyb So you reckon retail power is Playstation's (Sony's) trump card moving forward? If so, I respectfully, completely disagree. Valve have digital retail on lock. Sony is a 'hardcore' console. Just wait until 'hardcore' fanboys start showing off their Valvebox superior online abilities and you will see people swarming to it.

This of course all hinges on Valve being able to produce a decent console. That's why I said if Valve actually take the living room seriously, because I would imagine it would take a hell of a lot of their effort to make something great for console consumers.

Im not even really talking about Valve per se, im more interested in how Sony sits in the industry and what their strategy is moving forward.

Re: DriveClub Was the UK's Best Selling Exclusive of 2014

eLarkos

So what exactly is Playstation's competitive advantage moving into the future? Their #1 game is in 19th position. This list just proves that if Valve made a serious move to the living room then Playstation would be in deep poop. (MS also to a less extent - They have the Windows eco-system to help out).
I guess Sony's developer relations might hold strong, but only for a period of time.

Re: Retailers Reduce PlayStation TV as US Consumers Tune Out

eLarkos

@get2sammyb Yea, well that's the big question isn't it? My guess is that it was a cheap conversion with no real support intended unless for some reason it boomed. If that's the case then it's not very good for consumer relations.
Do we know if Sony made a loss or profit on this thing? I wouldn't be surprised if they have made some money on it.

On the other hand it could have just been a decision at the time and now they simply just don't want it anymore. Sony have made terrible decisions in recent times cough Vita cough

Re: Analysts: Xbox One Will Catch Up to PS4 in 2015

eLarkos

@Tasuki Is it my responsibility as a consumer to analyse how many devices Sony's servers are spread over? No. Sony is operating (and charging for) online services. As a provider it is their responsibility to do basic analysis of the operation including potential risks. If this truly was the only time that Sony's online had issues then it would be acceptable. However its not the first and probably not the last. Perhaps Sony needs to think about its online position and provide a service that it can comfortably operate.

Re: Game of the Year: Silver Trophy - P.T.

eLarkos

This is the exact reason I come to Push Square. They think it holds its own and they voted on it. Provides a much more varied read than the bog standard I see on every other website on the net.

Re: Actually, PS4 Had the Most Great Games This Year

eLarkos

Am I reading this wrong?
Nintendo's claim is based on both critic and user scores. You then go on to talk about PS games based soley on critic scores?? If you change the metric then you will change the result. That's normally how it goes.

This article is so weird. You are trying to imply Nintendo is incorrect by providing different statistics based off different data. I would understand if Nintendo's statement was wrong, but...

Re: Why Haven't We Seen More of Gravity Rush 2? You'll Find Out Soon

eLarkos

@get2sammyb so its the markets fault the Vita doesn't have a smash hit? Im not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it. I genuinely dont think you can blame the market for the Vita. I would love to buy a Vita.... If it was any good. But instead I (the market) happily bought its competitor.
P.s i dont own Pokémon ;p

Re: Why Haven't We Seen More of Gravity Rush 2? You'll Find Out Soon

eLarkos

@get2sammyb The same market hasn't killed the 3ds. Why did this market choose to only kill the Vita?
It has been an incredibly poor proposition to consumers since day one and Sony have done nothing to try increase its value. Under all my definitions that is 100% Sonys fault. You can't blame a market for being hostile to a product when its competition in the same market is thriving.
