I played on PC and beat the game last week - fully populated, raytracing, and very few minor graphical glitches. Its bloated, unrefined, and doesn't deliver on all of its promises, but still a great game overall.
@CynicalGamer For whatever it's worth, my votes for absolute best of the genre would go to: Metroid Zero Mission Super Metroid Ori and the Blind Foreset Ori and the Will of the Wisps Shadow Complex Axiom Verge
Played a few rounds a couple nights ago and was mostly having fun with it. It'd probably be more fun if I play with friends and had voice chat on. The portal mechanic drew me in to this one since I'm a big fan of the Portal franchise, although this is obviously much more action-oriented and not nearly as mind-bending. I feel like just sniping through portals is kinda cheap and boring, but on the other hand I was racking up kills like a madman while other people were trying to do some of the crazy stuff you see in the trailers - I was probably just playing a bunch of noobs or whatever because my team was absolutely dominating. Not unlike Rocket League, I'm sure high level play would offer some pretty entertaining strategies.
Finished the RE7: End of Zoe DLC in one sitting. Felt pretty badass just beating the spores out of mold monsters with almost nothing but your bare fists. If you haven't played it, it's only about 90 minutes long, so definitely buy it on sale. Even then, it's kind of a lot of money for what you actually get, which is a puzzle-less RE themed Punch Out with a little bit of exploration. If that sounds cool, it kindof is, but it won't be for everyone.
@Ah-Void I didn't forget, I'm just not going to do that - I didn't need to in order to prove my point. It appears that you've misunderstood what metacritic is, and what their scores and color codes actually mean. Here's a helpful link: https://www.metacritic.com/about-metascores
@Ah-Void LOL Dude, what are you even talking about? Go to IGN, GameSpot, Destructoid, and PushSquare - the site you're on right now - and look at their review policies. Look at the words next to the numbers. Also, metascores are literally the average of all accounted for review scores. Maybe you didn't realize that?
@Ah-Void Seiously? 7 is typically considered "good" and 8 is typically considered "great". I mean, literally almost every review outlet uses those exact words for those scores.
Waaaa ๐ญ 2 and 3 weren't the exact thing I wanted or expected and didn't fit my preconceived notions for what Dead Space "should" be so I hate those games regardless of their actual quality and entertainment value waaaaa ๐
Finally got around to playing the Shadow of the Colossus PS4 remake. I actually started the original on PS2 st a buddy's house back when it first came out, but never finished it. I also bought the HD version on PS3 but never finished that one either. Really enjoying it this time around though. Despite the controls still feeling pretty bad overall, the performance and graphics mostly make up for it. The most difficult fight so far has been with the camera. I'm on the 10th colossi, and might actually be able to finish it this weekend.
Just finished Shadow Warrior last night, which was really fun over the top psychomania. Like Doom (2016) with the addition of a katana. Recommended for fans of Duke Nukem and/or Shadows of the Damned based on the constant d*** jokes and toilet humor. Hyper violent big dumb fun.
@nessisonett I agree Undertale didn't quite pull it off, but DDLC.. It'd be almost impossible - or at least unprecedented. Maybe they've come up with some super clever console equivalent?
Not sure how they are going to pull this off to the same effect with it being on PC ๐ค I mean, without spoiling anything, you can do things on PC you simply can't replicate on a console
Not really interested in the concept tbh, but I'll still give it a look whenever it actually arrives. 1/2 of my gaming friends only have Xbox so the likelihood of me actually playing this is unfortunately low. In general, we don't typically play "serious" games anyway, so even if we could all play it, we still probably wouldn't.
It's not a very good game. The atmosphere is decent, but nothing special exactly. The puzzles are extremely basic, the stealth sections are lame, and the story is okay at best. Without actual combat, and puzzles a toddler could solve by accident, you may as well just watch a playthrough on YouTube if you're interested in the presentation - then again, you'd be better off just watching Stranger Things again.. My recommendation is to just play something better - The Medium just isn't really worth your time.
Trying to finish up RE Village but I'm not sure it'll be possible, even though I'm right at the end - Might have to wait until Tuesday night. I started my new job and pretty much all of my free time is gone now, although I do have quite a bit more money... But is it even worth it if I don't have time to enjoy what I buy with it? ๐ค
Just finished Resident Evil 6 last night. It was actually pretty okay for what it is. It definitely has it's issues - clunky controls, excessive QTEs, fetch quests - but I had more fun with it than I expected. I enjoyed how the story was told from multiple perspectives. The partner mechanics/AI are much better than in RE5, and the over-the-top action sequences are just dumb fun. I'm planning on playing the story DLCs I missed from 5 and 7 this weekend, which will get me completely caught up before jumping into Village.
I want to like it more than I actually do - too often the backgrounds look disappointingly barren and colorless. And the track is all orange all the time? Gonna have to stick with MK8D and FH4.
The game itself looks great, and the exclusive features are enough to ensure I'd get it on PS5 (outside of a weird price difference or something). Can't wait for more details on this one!
@jcboyer515 That's fair. RPG is probably another example. I actually have always hated the word "Metrodvania" because in my mind Castlevania (SotN) has RPG elements while Metroid doesn't, and therefore "Metroidvania" is no longer accurately descriptive. If a game was described as "Metroid-like" or "SotN-like" I would know what was meant, but when "Metroidvania" is used, I still have questions because I love Metroid, but I'm not particularly fond of SotN. Know what I mean?
@nessisonett Interesting about the vault mechanic in Tales of MajโEyal - I've never heard of that game before. Thank you for the reference - it's got me thinking. Personally, I'd say influencing a future run via unlocks is different enough compared to actually carrying over items/stats/stage progression/whatever to warrant the distinction, but I can understand the argument otherwise. In any case, it seems we all agree there are usually blurry lines between genres.
@nessisonett @colonelkilgore I disagree with that definition. I'd say a rogue-like has straight up perma-death, but while rogue-lites also feature perma-death, some things will carry over and you can make progress over multiple runs.
There should be bookmarks, not saves. It's so simple to solve the issue while simultaneously keeping the devs' intent intact. It's not even a novel concept. Just do it already.
Edit: Just to 100% clarify, by "bookmark" I mean a save that deletes itself when you start it. It's the exact same thing as rest mode except you could still play another game and/or turn off your console. Lots of other games implement this system.
I wonder how much store exclusivity really matters on PC - it's never stopped me from making a purchase. I mean, would Sony actually lose sales by having games on EGS but not Steam? Do PC gamers care that much about keeping their game library confined to one app? I have PC games from Steam, GOG, EGS, itch.io, and Windows store/Xbox app, and it doesn't bother me at all. If I wanted to play the game and it was only on EGS, what do I care, as I still have access to it. Am I missing something?
A fan-made Portal game/mod/whatever called "Portal Reloaded" was released recently on Steam if anyone is interested and unaware, and it's absolutely brilliant.
I enjoy these kinds of games and find the review and 6/10 score accurately reflects my experience. There are plenty of better and more interesting games in the genre.
I recently played through the '97 original and had a blast. Pretty fun little game with some cool weapons and great level design if you can look past the "offensive" stuff. It's literally free on Steam and GOG, and the "Redux" version is regularly on sale for $1.99
Finished up Maquette last night. It wasn't great. The gameplay just doesn't meet the potential of the concept. The story felt unnecessarily tacked on, and it honestly wasn't even very interesting. Performance was kinda bad too - it surely wasn't very well optimized for PS5. Certainly not a horrible game, but it definitely didn't meet my expectations.
I think he's pretty much right overall. VR will be niche until it's both wireless and powerful. Currently wireless isn't powerful enough, and powerful enough isn't wireless, and yeah, VR remains niche. It's probably going to be about a good long while before it becomes mainstream - a decade away at least.
