Re: Helldivers 2 Blasted with Over 200,000 Positive User Reviews Following Sony's PSN Backtrack

@Fiendish-Beaver I'll explain like you are 5:

  • Imagine in your neighborhood you sell walkie talkies to the kids, let's call it Walkie Network (WN) and it uses radio signals for every kid to use and communicate with each other. Each walkie has 2 signal knobs (one FM and the other for AM).
  • You have a central FM console so you can monitor the chatter and ensure no one is being naughty. Everyone uses FM, but some kids decided to turn off FM and enable AM only. Now you have a problem, your FM console has no idea what AM is and you cannot monitor through that console. You remember that your grandparents have an AM console, but you can't bring it over so every time you want to monitor the AM channel, you have to drive to your grandparents house (26 miles away from your FM console).

Do you see how much of a nuisance this is?

It looks shiny, but unfortunately for me a game requires more than just pretty graphics. Maybe it gets more entertaining down the line, but as it stands now, it's just another action RPG with very little substance to the gameplay loop.

Re: Exclusivity Is the Achilles' Heel of Huge Blockbusters, Says Former PlayStation Exec

It took me a long time to understand the console market is a giant hoax and a plague on your wallet. The value of these consoles greatly reduces when each generation, they do the same as last gen, but worse. Due to the "evolving" industry, the performance of games are greatly diminishing, so you won't feel the difference on a technical level with consoles.

Save money and buy one system that can do it all. Exclusives sell consoles, sure, but they're collateral on your wallet.

@Porco Porco, my lovely guy, Nintendo owns Pokémon alongside Game Freak and Creatures. The Pokémon Company is a joint venture between the 3. Nintendo doesn't publish under its name because they're not the sole owner of Pokémon. But it is an intellectual property owned by Nintendo.

Success is determined by the relative margin between cost to develop, market and maintain to the revenue it generated. There are no exact figures, but the cost for MKT to be developed and maintained should be somewhere between $1M - $3M/y and you're telling me their turnover is around $70M/y? How is that not a success? If you could invest $1 and make a return of $70, that's a win.

We lack context for the figures. But I wouldn't say it's only successful if it makes hundreds of millions. Can we agree on that?

Sony has to play their cards right, they have potential.

Re: Soapbox: I No Longer Think Subscriptions Like PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Are the Future of Gaming

Callmegil

I don't disagree in many aspects, but I can't say it hasn't been convenient. Xbox Game Pass is tied to my phone contract, not every game I want to play is there, but the selection is good enough to keep me from buying games. Games are 60 now for 1 game. If I want to play 12 games, that's 720. Sure, I could wait for a sale or buy used, or I could just not pay extra since I have a subscription. In today's economy, I buy 1 game, maximum 2 a year.

The only issue is see with subscriptions is the sustainable cost for the developers. It's a bargain for me, but a trash deal for them. Everything else is subjective, just like ROI (Return on Investment). If I don't see value in spending 720 quid a year, chances are I'm not doing it, especially if it's a game I play once and never again.

I believe there is a future for it, but there's a long way to go.

Re: Game of the Year: #1 - God of War Ragnarok

Is it possible to be higher than 1, or is it just a default option for all games? If it's the former, is there another game you have higher than #1, like #0 — according to Bleach, in the Arrancar arc, the number 0 is the highest of them all.

Re: Soapbox: How Yakuza Proves Bigger Open Worlds Aren't Always Better

This is what I've been saying since 2017! Games like Breath of the Wild may be pretty but have nothing going on. You can walk for 1 hour and nothing pops up. GTA V for comparison, walk for 1 hour and you'll see cops chasing NPCs, Security Vans, people trying to rob you, people robbing others and more — that gives the world depth and character.

Shadow of the Colossus had open world with an empty design, but it was made at a time where memory was expensive. Nowadays, Devs make games in "post-apocalyptic" worlds so they don't have to give depth to it. If that's what we're supporting then our standards in general has gone lower than low.
