@KALofKRYPTON Looks more like the PS1 to PS3 era d-pad with the equivalent of 4 separate buttons rather than one complete piece above the skin. PS4’s was a minor improvement but now it’s reverted.
Vita has an astounding d-pad as it is all a single piece above the console’s outer shell.
This controller ain’t got the Vita’s d-pad. It was included in the PS4’s prototype controller. The Sony sought feedback from PS3 players (i.e the imbecilic ones) who convinced them to go back to the divided up d-pad (probably to allow for use as 4 extra buttons).
I forgot For Honor was still a thing. Now that I think about it: Ghost Recon, The Division 2, Rainbow 6, For Honor; Ubisoft really has gone all in with the live services.
I got to play this with my PS Now trial and honestly, I just couldn’t get into it. For reasons I can’t understand Aloi just rubbed me the wrong way (not because she’s a woman, not because she’s ginger, not because there is no character creation because actually I prefer an established character). Maybe it was the conversation mechanics, felt so unnatural. Maybe it was the usage of stealth when near almost any mechanical animal, I don’t know. My trial ended and I had found some other games to play so this got cast aside. Maybe some day I’ll return.
Maybe I kinda wish she was a little more teched out, though it feels this becomes the case later on.
Been wanting to grab one but the price, low number of games I want to play and other priorities of the gaming kind have always prevented me. I honestly thought I’d be able to pick one up for like £150 with a game or two by now. Goes to show how much I know about pricing.
I predict Sony will just release a minuscule evolution of its PS4 controller and continue to insist on the divided up d-pad instead of using that absolutely sublime PSVita d-pad they showed on the prototype design. Until the “feedback” they received from all the wall planters who will obviously only ever recommend mild variations of what they had in the past rather than anything new because they have the farsighted of a blind person wearing a balaclava with the hole accidentally not cut out. So forgive me if I hold little excitement for the PS5 controller. Sheesh I had even more excitement for the dang PS3 batarang!
I don’t think it would influence me on whether I buy one, more like when. Rarely does a new console ever release with a game I definitely have to play and it could be 1-2 years before I decide to buy (4 years for the PS4). But if it had full backwards compatibility, I’d seriously consider a Day 1 buy just to clear up some of the consoles beneath the telly as there are still plenty of PS1/2/3 games I like to play.
Not only do i have more than enough games spanning generations to keep my occupied for the months ahead, anything that will reduce the amount of crunch time developers will have to go through is worth it in my book.
Unfortunately it does look like that for at least cyberpunk that is likely to still take place during the extra time.
I think the last Ubisoft game I truly enjoyed was Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 back on the X360. Future Warrior was dumbed down, couldn’t really get into the AC series (tried on first game though) and by the time I thought about it again we were like 10+ games in so thought “why bother”. I really really tried to like Rayman Origins but something always rubbed me the wrong way. Don’t know what but stopped after I felt I was forcing myself to play.
I still keep an eye on their works but rarely ever am interested in what they do. Well apart from laugh at their inability to comprehend the meaning of the words “iconic” and “ultimate”.
Walks in to check if Ace Combat 7 made the cut. It didn’t; leaves through door knocking over vase on the way out...and after setting the copy of Anthem on fire.
Kind of expected this. The pre-release hype, its pedigree and the limited details prior to its release was always going to help initial sales but as the realities of the game and its unorthodox nature spread, it was going to become apparent to many that this was a game without mass market appeal and sales were likely to plummet.
This is not a dig at the game (haven’t played it and those I know who have enjoyed it) but just acceptance that it was unlikely to be a big long legged seller because of its unique nature. At least in the UK, can’t comment yet on other regions.
Wish they also had the option to buy them separately physical; only interest in Vanquish. May wait if it goes on sale in the future. Otherwise may grab it digitally again if on sale.
Sigh...I had some witty comment about doubling down and my sphincter muscles but honestly what’s the point. This is the reality of a big chunk of 3rd Party AAA gaming these days. Enough people have been conditioned to be repeatedly conned out of their money via the “jackpot highs” and repetitive grinding of Live Service gaming. It’s a Lost Cause now. When I fired up an old PS2 game a while back and saw EA’s logo I was genuinely surprised how long it had been since I saw it; and that made me sad. They actually published some good stuff back in the distant days when it seemed like they had a shred of respect for games and their player base.
They said they wanted to stop being voted “Worst Company in America”, they just didn’t say they planned to do so not be changing positively but by psychologically manipulating people that what they do is good.
Now where was I going with all this rambling? Oh yeah Screw EA, I hope all their toilets burst overflow simultaneously after a company funded vindaloo lunch.
Okay now Bugthesda must be doing this purposefully. Seriously, no one can screw up this much without doing it deliberately or just being completely and utterly inept.
I’m slightly moved to tears every time I play Gradius V, Symphony of the Night or Probotector (UK gamer here) knowing the chances of getting any additions to these franchises even remotely like these entries is next to impossible short of a hostile takeover or a well placed meteorite strike during a mass board meeting. I could argue they have attempted to redeem themselves with some of the Classic Collection releases but it’s like they hand us a bag of tasty old style fudge only to then blast some newly formed feacal matter in our faces created by eating said fudge.
@Rob_230 If Contra Rogue Corps is an example of this “effort” then forgive me if my expectations can be described as subterranean.
@oldschool1987 Trust me, I could have been a lot worse if I expressed how I really feel about this game....
But that’s honestly how I felt, I even had to have a sit down and think about what I had just experienced.
At the end of the day I just feel it’s a major example of “not for me” syndrome. Like they took everything I don’t like in gaming and rolled it into one package (with the exception of always-Online and loot boxes).
Still doesn’t bother me; cos I like to believe Ellie had her cranium split open on the operating table and a cure was found. At least that’s how I tried to end it when i stood in front of the doctor with the scalpel for twenty minutes telling him to get on with it.
@YETi @FullbringIchigo Glad to know I wasn’t the only one. Same scenario here. Caught up the hype and bought it at launch and in the end had to force myself to finish it over several months (had a friend clear a boss cos I couldn’t be bothered). When it finished, I just felt nothing. No joy, no anger, no satisfaction, no disappointment. Just emptiness. Took disc out, placed in case, placed in box of games to sell / trade. Remained there till I traded it to a friend. Honestly, a game not even worth an emotional response.
Kinda apt I was on the bog when I read this as it stunk of desperation. It’s like the officer too scared to go the frontline taking all the glory for Sergeant Square Enix’s Accomplishments in Battle.
I’ve read articles with a light dusting of “fanboyism” in the past as expected from a manufacturer-specific site; but here it is literally pouring out of every conceivable orifice. Whilst slightly excessive on the CG, Microsoft’s conference was quick and to the point just like last year. Yeah many weren’t exclusives but who cares, games were being revealed and you can only really reveal a game once as Square Enix discovered last year. After Sony’s absolute screw up last year where I spent numerous times screaming in hope that someone in the audience would throw a rock to whatever instrumental delaying tactic was on stage before switching off and cleaning the kitchen. Then I watched the actual trailers the next day.
That’s the issue with Live Service games. You have to ensure a strong and steady stream of content to hold onto players as it’s hard to clear them back once they’ve moved on.
Of course maybe EA releasing another live service game in Feb didn’t help; not when 3 other big titles were released that month. After the Titanfall II release date debacle I am honestly starting to think this is all a set up by Unicronic Arts (not my term) to find an excuse to shut Respawn down and squander its assets; like every other studio before.
Having only bought my PS4 in Jan of this year, it’s nice to know I’ll still have support for a few years. If this gen has been anything to go by, I suspect buying a PS5 (most likely the mid-gen enhanced model) in 2022/3.
I’m sure the tech is impressive but unless it is used in new an innovative ways to create games previously not possible, then I fail to see the point in updating from the current gen. Besides, recent history has shown it takes around 2 years before such a game tends to be released on a system.
It’s almost as if putting together a competent yet ultimately fairly standard live service game that has elements already covered in other games before and doesn’t have much that will pull players away from their current game of choice to play it; WON’T sell mega gangbuster numbers like GTA V / Online.
Call me back when a AAA 3rd Party publisher annouces a game of theirs sold above expectations cos that would actually be newsworthy.
I only hopped onto the PS4 train back in January when a game I wanted to play finally came out. I now have a small backlog that’ll see me for some time so honestly, I wouldn’t mind a PS5 being released in 2021/22. The 7th Gen of consoles was the longest we’ve seen and honestly I loved it (6th Gen remains the best though) as developers had to push the hardware to the limits or think of unique ways to enhance their games; rather than just have enough power to render individual sweat drops following forehead brows with accurate light reflections.
The only way I would jump onto the PS5 Hype Train is if they unveiled a truly unique product with a unique way to play certain games and at least one great game that i positively have to play on release. Otherwise, maybe in 5+ years when they release an enhanced version.
Seen 3 articles about this. 1 just presented the news and gave a good argument about some of the issues that have come about by Fortnite addiction yet how this may be excessive yet a call for discussion.
This tongue in cheek one that acknowledges that it is excessive but does so in a humorous way.
And one completely crass vindictive one that does nothing except show that it’s author has all the journalistic integrity and bitterness or a prawn sandwich that’s gone through the digestive system of a water buffalo with the runs.
I’ll just say what I said elsewhere; but of a knee jerk reaction but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was purposefully controversial to bring the actual issues of addiction into the spotlight. It may be free to play but several elements of Fortnite are addictive in nature and through its loot box system, season passes, etc it starts to enter the near predatory elements.
I was once in the camp that effort should be needed to complete games and whilst that still stands to a degree, I’ve come to realise over time that many people will lack the time or ability to learn a game through trials and repetitions. Therefore an easier mode could help such people enjoy the game they otherwise would have found frustrating and unenjoyable. By all means perhaps hide some extra content behind higher difficulties or challenges but the base experience should be accessible to a degree and if an easy mode helps those who otherwise couldn’t, then I’m all for it!
At the end of the day the question is; would an easy mode actually inhibit the enjoyment of those who prefer to play on a harder difficulty?
@Jaz007 Definitely Christian in my eyes; Roman Catholic in fact. The grenade in the centre is laid out exactly as the Sacred Heart even with the thorns wrapped around it.
As a practicing Catholic I honestly don’t feel any animosity towards the cover. I can understand how some may see it as disrespectful but I see it kind of a parody making use of an artistic design; of which there have been many in many faiths over millennia. Definitely not mean spirited so you’d have to be pretty sensitive to find this troublesome, so no issues here. The staff’s pretty cool too.
Borderlands has never clicked with me; gave it a shot and the whole “loot & shoot” became dull over time so I dropped it in the end. Still I acknowledge it has quite a following and they’ve been looking forward to this.
I’m assuming at least 30% of the total covers mobile purchases and transactions. DLC & MTX on consoles & PC could take 10-20%. The big question is what is the ratio for items that can be procured in both physical and digital formats.
This trailer made me realise that’s Sony’s gone all in with the realistic looking graphics and gritty art style. Well if Nintendo has gone all in with cartoon and cel-shading, I guess it’s only natural Sony went with the other side of the coin to grab that part of the market.
I didn’t watch the SoP, but was gonna comment here to tell the author that the last thing you should do is treat the dissatisfied members of the audience with absolute contempt and name calling.
Thankfully, it looks like the lesson was swiftly learned as the article has been slightly amended. Whilst those complaining may have placed too high expectations (what else is new?) and being enraged for enraged sake, the last thing you then do is belittle them and make them feel like their concerns or disatisfaction can be completely tossed aside. It’s something that is causing a lot of animosity in today’s world.
So instead I can commend the author for realising this and amending the article to instead explain why people’s anger is misplaced and created by their own unrealistic expectations rather than anything caused by Sony.
Its almost like Looty Shooty gameplay isn’t really Bioware’s shtick; maybe they’re better suited to character driven role-playin....Ah! Please EA stop holding your breath!
I wonder if Anthem ever can be truly fixed; of course regardless it should have been “fixed” on release not months down the line. Its like one big additional beta test except You have to pay EA to partake.
Within the first 20 min the votes were skewed to the negative with the majority doubting a decent game could come out of it. Now seems to have balanced out.
I do think the deciding factor will be how much EA will stick their proverbial <censored> in it or will they let BioWare try to produce at least something half decent.
Still, the whole buy now and maybe the game will become good letter just stinks.
Regardless, the Vita had the greatest d-pad Sony ever created. Suck clickety goodness made playing PS1 Classics such a joy. Will sure miss it. Glad I managed to buy 3 but wish i had bought one more of the newer versions.
The Typical AAA method. Release an incompletely developed and QA tested game with methods that can try people’s patience; then fix it up afterwards and the publisher can then expect praise for doing a good job. All the more reason to wait until it’s “development” truly is complete and then I can you can consider buying it; at a tidy discount too as EA only care about the first week or 2 of game sales; after that its all about “recurrent user spending”.
EA basically wants to take their cake and eat it. They want to sell bucket loads at £45/$60 within the first few days then hook enough players into buying microtransactions to set up a tidy revenue stream. Basically a free to play game without the very first word of the monetary game model. The entire game is built around this style and whilst it’s “just cosmetic” now (not that it was ever a good argument for a full priced game) you can bet EA will be microtransactioning this game up the wazoo in the near future. I wonder when DLC Javelins will appear and how much they will charge for each.
Well when you get a team with lots of expertise in crafting deep, engaging, story driven, mostly singleplayer experiences and force them to put together a game designed from the outset to chase a trend that is ripe for excessive monetisation long after that trend has sailed off and returned with its “spices”; how did you expect it to turn out?
I had Respawn Entertainment as next on EA’s Guillotine until Apex actually pulled it off; best replace with BioWare.
Ace Combat 7 is the game I’ve been waiting for the last 10+ years. Bit rough round the edges especially in story but bang on in almost everything else. Especially the soundtrack.
@Neolit Oh Jeez where to begin. I am a fan of the series but have yet to play two games (Dream Drop Distance and Chapter 2.9). I’m holding off KHIII for now until I finish this. But seriously, either prep yourself for some serious play time over multiple games or read / watch an in depth summary as the story only gets more crazy as it goes along.
You can pick up the PS4 HD1.5 & HD2.5 double pack pretty cheaply and the HD2.9 ain’t much more. Its just you’ll need to put in quite a lot of hours first.
@KALofKRYPTON Trust me, didn’t miss much on Infinity. Didn’t take long before the repetitiveness, nickel & diming and attempts to control your gaming time came into play. I’m as big as they come for an Ace Combat fan, but I dropped it in like 3 months.

Re: Fans Are Hopeful DualSense's D-Pad Has Been Inspired by PS Vita
The D-pad looks more PS1/2/3 design like more than the Vita’s. As you already said, it remains segmented (the bane of the majority of Sony d-pads).
Of course, nothing would make me happier than slapping a Vita d-pad onto the controller and destroying all of this 4-button nonsense.
Re: PS5 Controller Revealed, Named DualSense with Create Button and Built-in Microphone

Wish there was the choice “Not too keen, Sony still can’t design d-pads anymore”.

It could be possible if part of the agreement is that Konami must stay at least 500m away from any people involved in the game’s development.

Re: Half of Video Game Software Bought in the UK Last Year was Digital
I’m assuming at least 30% of the total covers mobile purchases and transactions. DLC & MTX on consoles & PC could take 10-20%. The big question is what is the ratio for items that can be procured in both physical and digital formats.
Re: Sony Flaunts Its Impressive List of Exclusive Games With New 'Only on PlayStation' Hype Trailer
This trailer made me realise that’s Sony’s gone all in with the realistic looking graphics and gritty art style. Well if Nintendo has gone all in with cartoon and cel-shading, I guess it’s only natural Sony went with the other side of the coin to grab that part of the market.
Re: Reaction: State of Play Can and Will Be Great Assuming Sony Sticks with It
I didn’t watch the SoP, but was gonna comment here to tell the author that the last thing you should do is treat the dissatisfied members of the audience with absolute contempt and name calling.
Re: ANTHEM Players Boycott the Game As BioWare Once Again 'Fixes' Increased Loot Drops
Re: PlayStation Goes Hard on Captain Marvel Advertising
Is there a reasoning behind the two Eurofighter Typhoons in the background?
That’s about the only thing I’m interested in.
Re: Poll: One Week Later, Were the Reviews Right About ANTHEM?
Within the first 20 min the votes were skewed to the negative with the majority doubting a decent game could come out of it. Now seems to have balanced out.
I do think the deciding factor will be how much EA will stick their proverbial <censored> in it or will they let BioWare try to produce at least something half decent.
Still, the whole buy now and maybe the game will become good letter just stinks.
Re: PS Vita Island Closed as Sony Officially Lays Handheld to Rest
Regardless, the Vita had the greatest d-pad Sony ever created. Suck clickety goodness made playing PS1 Classics such a joy. Will sure miss it. Glad I managed to buy 3 but wish i had bought one more of the newer versions.
Re: Changes to ANTHEM's Awful Loot System are Incoming
The Typical AAA method. Release an incompletely developed and QA tested game with methods that can try people’s patience; then fix it up afterwards and the publisher can then expect praise for doing a good job. All the more reason to wait until it’s “development” truly is complete and then I can you can consider buying it; at a tidy discount too as EA only care about the first week or 2 of game sales; after that its all about “recurrent user spending”.
Re: ANTHEM Down to £35 in the UK Just Days After Launch
EA basically wants to take their cake and eat it. They want to sell bucket loads at £45/$60 within the first few days then hook enough players into buying microtransactions to set up a tidy revenue stream. Basically a free to play game without the very first word of the monetary game model. The entire game is built around this style and whilst it’s “just cosmetic” now (not that it was ever a good argument for a full priced game) you can bet EA will be microtransactioning this game up the wazoo in the near future. I wonder when DLC Javelins will appear and how much they will charge for each.
Re: Round Up: ANTHEM PS4 Reviews Falter
Well when you get a team with lots of expertise in crafting deep, engaging, story driven, mostly singleplayer experiences and force them to put together a game designed from the outset to chase a trend that is ripe for excessive monetisation long after that trend has sailed off and returned with its “spices”; how did you expect it to turn out?
I had Respawn Entertainment as next on EA’s Guillotine until Apex actually pulled it off; best replace with BioWare.
Re: Ace Combat 7 Season Pass Content Teased with Obscure Trailer
Yeah I got nothing.
But its yet its more Ace Combat content and thats ultimately a good thing.
I wonder if it’ll link to AC3 in any way?
Re: EA Thinks ANTHEM Will Sell 6 Million Copies in Six Weeks
@FullbringIchigo Except BFV sold 7.7 Million copies. Of course that was still a disappointmentnto EA.
Re: Game of the Month: Best PS4 Games of January 2019
Ace Combat 7 is the game I’ve been waiting for the last 10+ years. Bit rough round the edges especially in story but bang on in almost everything else. Especially the soundtrack.
Re: EA's Posted One of Those Awful Early Access Information Charts for ANTHEM
@carlos82 Has served me well for years and looking back, haven’t missed a thing.
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2 Rise Straight to the Top on PS4
Re: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown - Explosive In-Flight Entertainment
@KALofKRYPTON Trust me, didn’t miss much on Infinity. Didn’t take long before the repetitiveness, nickel & diming and attempts to control your gaming time came into play. I’m as big as they come for an Ace Combat fan, but I dropped it in like 3 months.
