Re: It Sounds Like PS5 Is Handily Outselling Its New-Gen Rival in France

SlipperyFish

@Fiendish-Beaver so "ONLY console to play" becomes "ONLY high-end console to play" I see.
It's a damn shame they don't see Nintendo as competition, because they certainly are. It's like saying hey BMW and Mercedes shouldn't worry about Toyota because BMW/Mercedes is a different league to Toyota. Yet Toyota will outsell them either way.
And if Nintendo can go and do their own thing with zero competition, then why can't playstation.
Funny you give Last of Us and God of War as examples as Playstation is the only console you can play those games on already.. oh and they're on PC too.
You literally said yourself if people couldn't afford playstation they'd play Nintendo if it's all they could afford. You explained yourself why playstation wouldn't price their consoles/games to astronomical prices, because nobody would buy them, and they'd just choose to miss out on the "high quality titles". Then guess what.. Sony loses loads of money.
I know why they've increased prices to £70, because games development costs more than ever before. Services go up because prices of everything everywhere are going up.
Of course playstation could do as they please if they were on their own. But people vote with their wallet, and they'd still have to be in the realm of affordability to still exist.

This is without even going into the rise of the steam deck. There's no reason why Valve wouldn't try to launch a Linux based home console. Developers are even optimising games for steam deck now. No one cared about SteamMachines because they were just crap pre-builds. If they made one box of hardware for home console gaming, run on SteamOS, it could quickly become the new Xbox.

@nomither6 oh yeah for sure, I agree with you on that. I had x360 for about 10-11 years. Halo 3 and FM4 made it worth it. Dad eventually got a PS3 and I enjoyed all the Naughty Dog games. PS3 felt more grown-up, x360 seemed directly targeted at teenagers lol. If you didn't own both consoles you were definitely missing out on something

Re: It Sounds Like PS5 Is Handily Outselling Its New-Gen Rival in France

SlipperyFish

@nomither6 well yeah PSN wasn't worth charging money for, that's why they didn't. You also had to buy a WiFi dongle for the OG Xbox 360, so £50 for that on top of paying for Xbox live just to play games online was a bit ridiculous, especially when it was free on PS3 and PC. Not justifying the hacking, just saying both had less than desirable online.

And I don't really believe X360 facilitated the changeable harddrive, considering the PS1 and PS2, GameCube, etc were using memory cards..
I understand the convenience aspect but I'll always prefer the slightly more inconvenient option that isn't proprietary, to the simple proprietary option. I also find it ironic how angry everyone was at PS for proprietary Vita storage just no one ever cared about X360 harddrive, or the Series SSD expansion

Re: Gran Turismo 7 Promises Major PS5, PS4 Update Next Week

SlipperyFish

With the absolute monumental amount of effort it takes to make car models these days, I'd say 7 of them is certainly a newsworthy update. They're not just recycling models as per certain other racing franchises.
Very excited for the LFA, hope the sound design is good, that car certainly deserves it

Re: You'll Need an Internet Connection to Pair PS5 Slim's Optional Blu-ray Drive

SlipperyFish

@Haruki_NLI Disc Drives have circuit boards on them already, and the detachable drive will definitely have some kind of proprietary connection. The drive definitely won't connect to the internet itself.
My assumption would be it scans for a code on the PCB and checks it against a database, but that could totally be done offline.
It says "upon set-up" which adds a lot of confusion to how it would actually work. Do we have to register the disc drive or something? Who knows

Re: You'll Need an Internet Connection to Pair PS5 Slim's Optional Blu-ray Drive

SlipperyFish

On the one hand, the removal drive makes the actual drive much easier to repair if it's a failure of a gear or motor, but on the other hand there is now no way to play a PS5 fully offline. Of course fully offline gaming is very difficult these days, but why do we have to use the official disc drive? Piracy, malware, or something? There's probably a logical reason but it seems dumb.

Re: Xbox Documents Reveal Staggering Cost of Bringing Games to Game Pass, PS Plus

SlipperyFish

@BusyOlf Subscriptions for music makes a lot of sense. It's gets very expensive very fast. I used to be adamant about buying all my music, but eventually gave up and got Tidal instead because they pay better royalties (I still occasionally buy physical music). However, with games and TV movies, yeah it doesn't make sense to me. I just rent most movies off Amazon.

Speaking of renting, digital game rental sounds kinda interesting..

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Has Ray Tracing at 60fps on PS5

SlipperyFish

@rjejr oh ok interesting. I just assumed 40fps was a happy medium between 30-60fps. Didn't really know it had much to do with 120hz. I feel like to someone like me I wouldn't even notice the difference. 120hz in big TVs is still quite rare though isn't it? Unless the TV world has changed a lot in 3 years

Re: State of Play Livestream Revealed for Thursday, a Focus on Indie and Third-Party Games

SlipperyFish

@Cherip-the-Ripper well it starts with FM5 being a huge downgrade from 4. 300 less cars, only 20 locations, and changes to the career mode. From there, 6 and 7 are simply trying to get back to how good 4 was. The lack of environments in the new game (20 VS FM7's 33), and the weird RPG leveling system instead of just using credits like every other racing game on the planet, are my two biggest concerns. For me though I'd have to buy a Series console so it's a lot more money for me VS someone who already has one who wouldn't be as fussy. I did buy an xbone just for the Forza games but was a bit disappointed and regretted buying it, and don't want to repeat that mistake

SlipperyFish

@Shepherd_Tallon Same here. I had the 360 and had no plans on changing but my dad ended up getting a PS3 slim on a whim. We got uncharted and the last of us and yeah they were fantastic games my whole family enjoyed playing. My 360 died, got another one but never quite got back into games until I got a PS4. My dad gave me his PS3 so now I get to go back and enjoy some of the other games I missed out on

Re: Three More PS Plus Essential Games Are Available to Download Now

Generation Zero is something I've always been curious about but never wanted to spend my money on so I'll give that a try.
As a huge fan of saints row 1+2 I'm still salty about 3+4, so I don't feel positive towards the reboot. But maybe I should give it a try.
As for Black Desert I avoid MMOs like the plague as it'll probably consume my life

Re: Video of New PS5 Slim Model Posted Online

SlipperyFish

One thing bothering me which makes me think it's completely fake, is the hole for the stand. The physical and digital versions of the PS5 use different stands, given the different widths of the base of the PS5. So then, if the disc drive is detachable, you would need to use a different stand to stand it vertically? And depending on what side it lays on, even to use it horizontally. So you'd need to remove the disc drive, change the plate, then use a different stand?
Unless, they use a massive plate when there's no disc drive, so it has the same stand, but at that point, what's even the point? Surely they could've found other ways to cut costs and just sell a disc version only for £400.
It just seems very strange.

Re: Microsoft Beats US Regulator FTC in Activision Blizzard Buyout Battle

SlipperyFish

@theSpectre I wasn't on about exclusives here, rather than all the people saying who they'll buy next, without much regard to wether those publishers/developers actually put themselves up for sale or not. The same goes for those arguing Sony will by Square Enix, Capcom, etc. And I wouldn't be happy if Sony did, I'm fully against the Bethesda and Activision acquisitions, why would I be ok with Sony doing it? Developer acquisitions like Obsidian make perfect sense, even though it's probably the biggest loss to me, I can't really argue against it at all.
