To be fair, it's an oddly personal offense from a site that doesn't usually attack people directly, and Geoff seems kind of playful about it. Must be hard to be in that position
@Deityjester releasing as a timed exclusive definitely didn't help playerbase numbers. Do you think Vermintide 2 has more players or should I just wait for Darktide?
@MrPeanutbutterz Rivals was a proper cops vs racers kind of game. Frustrating at times but definitely felt better than Hot Pursuit imo. However I might get Hot Pursuit on switch since switch lacks any proper racers outside of Kart racers.
HP2 on PS2 was an absolute banger though.
Yeah the WRC games are good, especially since the main dirt series is dead. I suppose it was the teams first online open world thing, definitely something I'll pick up when it inevitably has an insane sale and hopefully it improves as a live service title.
@Flaming_Kaiser yes it would, but discs suck. It's kinda tough to decide whether I want to deal with all the annoyances of discs just to have physicals. There has to be another solution
I honestly think we need to move on from discs if physical media is to survive. Obviously a disc drive would be required for backwards compatibility, but I wouldn't mind if its just some usb/proprietary cable accessory. Since getting a Switch, I've noticed how much nicer using cartridges are over discs. It's probably never going to happen but the Vita did use cartridges so maybe there's a chance. The main problem is obviously cost as you're essentially buying a 150gb SSD everytime.
@MrPeanutbutterz Rivals is an interesting one for sure, it's the one that was made by Criterion and Ghost, before being handed over to Ghost. I actually played in on PS3 and was pretty blown away by the graphics. I did buy it for PS4 for like £2 on sale but haven't played it yet as I learned there's no manual transmission which takes a bit of fun away for me. Unbound I saw the car list was exactly the same and I wasn't a fan of the graphical features (I know they can be turned off though) so I didn't want to pay £60 for the exact same cars.
Yeah man, Auto Modellista frequently goes for about £40 for a decent condition copy. I almost bought it a few years ago for £20 but passed, now the prices have shot up for it. Probably got featured on some YouTube video or something. But there aren't too many copies up for sale
I played HWU on switch but I think I have it from PS Plus as well, thinking of replaying it. If I come across a cheap copy of HWU2 I'll give it a shot
Most of TDU's original developers moved to Ivory Tower to develop the Crew which is interesting. TDUSC is developed by the old WRC developers (before EA got that license) so I thought it would have a better launch at least
@MrPeanutbutterz if you've only played the criterion NFS then yeah that makes total sense. A NFS game with no car modding makes no sense to me, however I did play 2012 on my dad's PS3 and remember enjoying it except from finding a new car, and it being blocked behind DLC. I did prefer 2015 despite the cringe cutscenes and janky physics, but felt like a proper NFS game. Payback and Unbound are pretty terrible, and I played a lot of Heat but it really lacked polish. I think we might never see another NFS game honestly.
Automodelista I've only emulated, it's pretty rare and expensive to buy, but also a pig to emulate. I love the style of the game and the fact you can even customize your garage, such nice detail.
Shame about HWU2 as I've not played it yet, and I need to get myself a copy of Driveclub. Super Woden gp2 looks pretty cool as well.
A real shame about TDU Solar Crown, the map looks really cool - finally an open world racer with narrow, twisty roads. The physics seem OK too, but terrible performance, server issues, and seemingly bad progression let it down a lot. Hopefully they can patch it to something playable
@MrPeanutbutterz Most Wanted 2012 is a love it or hate it game. As a massive fan of old school NFS, me and many other fans hate MW2012 for being nothing like a NFS game. If you seperate it from the NFS brand it's a good game at it's core, but there is a lot of bitterness around it.
NFS underground 1/2, Carbon, Most Wanted 2005, and ProStreet are all favourites of mine, along with Inital D PSP, the entire GT franchise, Burnout 3/Paradise, Dirt 2 and 3, Automodellista, TDU 1 and 2, Midnight Club, Dirt Rally, the earlier Grid games (1/2/autosport), PGR4, and one of the best, Forza Motorsport 4.
The racing genre kinda sucks these days, I don't play many modern racers other than mario kart, GT7, and Motorfest. The hot wheels games are pretty fun, and I try a lot of the indie racing games which are hit and miss. Hot shot racing and Art of Rally are good fun though.
I also love the Initial D and Wangan Midnight arcade games, there's nothing quite like racing salarymen under a McDonalds in Shibuya... really wish they'd port those games to console and localise them
Sorry, love talking about racing games. Thanks for listening to my tedx talk
@MrPeanutbutterz I agree. Motorfest's cars at least all feel different, and how they're supposed to feel, like a 50s American feels wildly different to a Ferrari SF90. Open world racing physics is always a difficult balance, if you like super realistic or super arcadey racers then I definitely understand why it's not for you
@MrPeanutbutterz Handling is the best I've experienced in an open worlder for a long time. Never enjoyed forza's slippery and lofty physics. Also road cars get beached on the sand, whereas in forza they can just fly over any ground
@PloverNutter to be fair, 4k@60fps can never be guaranteed on every game since it's up to the developer to make that happen as well. TDU Solar Crown can't hit 4k@60 on a RTX4090. Sony can't do much about a developer's poor optimisation. I mean even a PS2 could run games at 60fps is the devs chose to
@Intr1n5ic ahh ok I understand. They'd essentially be leaving room for PSSR to do more of the upscaling work. I think that would be good for developers as long as there's still 60fps modes on the base PS5
@LordOfTurnips I think it's a massive wake up call. People are outraged but they will soon release every piece of tech coming out is seeing very little upgrades, even iphone 16 is still stuck at 60Hz. Now that's a scam. There have been little technological breakthroughs in GPU or CPU tech, at least not since Pascal architecture or AMD Zen. We are hitting a ceiling for tech with massive diminishing returns, little upgrades are going to cost a lot. Sony is bringing the harsh reality.
I suspect that's why Switch 2 is still not announced. Nintendo could be struggling to make any generational upgrades while keeping it compact
@Intr1n5ic PSSR, from what I can tell, appears to not involve the developers. The claim is it'll work on 8,500 titles, so it's AI driven and won't need any fiddling on the dev or sonys part for each game. I suppose there could be a way for devs to optimise with it
@Thumper yeah it will never be all games, that responsibility is on the devs, but sony have stated that as the target to developers. People are still asking for it and Sony are trying to provide it
@__jamiie at no point was I arguing, I was just having a discussion because I am passionate about technology and games. I know everyone on this site always wants to argue, and tone is hard to convey, but I'm always just trying to learn more and share my thoughts.
You're right, life is too short, I'm only here because I have nothing else better to do right now.
@__jamiie xbox isn't doing 4k@60 anymore either tbf. PS5 pro can run GT7 at 8k, which nobody rightly cares about, but its technically impressive. And base PS5 also boosts old games sooo what exactly is xbox doing that PS5 isn't, but the PS5 pro is?
What was promised at the beginning of the gen was delivered to start with on a handful of games. Ultimately it is up to devs to hit 4k@60. Which you could achieve on literally any game if you turned graphical fidelity down enough.
Whether PS5 pro is worth it depends on the individual but for me it's the one thing Sony hasn't mentioned and we won't know until release - cooling. It needs to run cool and quiet, unlike the PS4 pro. If it doesn't, it's useless to me. If it does then, then it's almost worth it. £700 is a step too far I think. I could live with £650, or £700 with the disc drive would be acceptable. However, I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the production cost. Given the increase in GPU, size, and cooling (an educated assumption - there are a lot more vents at the back than the slim) in addition to the low production volume (which lowers margins), it's entirely possible the pro barely breaks even. We know PS5 doesn't make much profit, even sold at a loss to begin with, so I'm thinking the pro is priced at a bigger profit margin to gain something back from a niche audience. The cost of tech in general has gone up, not down like usual, as well.
For me, it's probably better to invest in an OLED tv first. I love my Switch OLED, and my phone is AMOLED, so my TV always looks a bit dull in comparison. I'll probably get a pro in a year or two when there's a sale, as I don't think I'll be getting PS6 at launch.
But in general, I think whether it's worth it depends on the individual.
@MatthewJP I'll get one for the opposite reason. Regret staying up late just trying to get a PS5 at launch, just to play a few PS5 games and lots of PS4 pro versions of games for 4 years. I should've just got a ps4 pro and waited longer
@BeerMonster since it's digital out the box, its £389 to £700. Although I agree with you, cost of production has gone up, and going off PS4 pro sales, this is going to be fairly low in production numbers and so economies of scale and all that.
Until we have another Pascal Architecture type of technological breakthrough, I can't see prices coming down significantly anytime soon
@__jamiie I tried researching what you're saying but can't find what youre saying. I can see Gears 5 runs at 120fps @ 1440p but nothing to do with upscaling or anything. If you're on about game boost, well the base PS5 also has that and it's a seperate thing to PSSR
@__jamiie for a first party game? Ok? When PSSR will work on 8,500 games? 120fps at what resolution? Dont think it's 4k is it. And what's xbox got to do with it anyway?
@jrt87 CNET have stated they games they've tested are running 4k@60fps, GT7 even running at 8k (for whoever wants that), and Sony have been asking devs to hit 4k@60fps on the pro. If you buy the xsx discless that's coming up, and you suddenly want discs, you've got to buy a whole new console and a 1tb stick to make up the difference
@Pinkman probably because a youtube livestream is going to be heavily compressed, loads of detail lost. I could still clearly see the difference though
Better cooling and not having to choose between quality or performance and I think I'll get one. I regret not getting a PS4 pro and getting a PS5 at launch, so I hope it would keep me happy for a few years after PS6 releases
@S1ayeR74 Maybe £20 at most? It's also "split" 8GB/2GB, 2GB being reserved for the OS, so games pretty much only have 8GB RAM to run off. The Series X uses a weird 10GB/6GB "split" where they run different bandwidths as well. VS PS5 using 16GB RAM all the same bandwith +512MB SSD Cache. By split, I don't mean the ram is physically split like PS3 or older consoles, but it's still one unit. I suppose PlayStation have really learned from the PS3 days to make their hardware simpler which makes for better optimization. I wish PS5 went for more GPU cores at a lower clock speed though but you can't have it all I guess.
But yeah sorry, from what I've read, the 10GB RAM on Series S has been the source of a lot of the problems developing for it. People had problems with Borderlands 3 crashing on Series S with a "run out of memory" error screen.
Considering Sony have proudly advertised times exclusively for just DLC before (i.e CoD), the fact they wouldn't be screaming about exclusively of this game doesn't make sense.
@S1ayeR74 the main thing developers struggle with is the RAM on Series S. It's only 10GB, whereas the Steam deck is 16GB. Wukong's minimum requirement on PC is 16GB so makes sense why it's ok on steam deck. Neither platform meet PC minimum GPU spec but the steam deck runs at 800p, so series S would run at maybe upscaled 720p if RAM wasn't a limitation
This might be one of the worst articles I've ever read on this site. Completely emotionally driven and completely backtracks on all the defending of this title. Also full of assumptions on who did what and what's going to happen with the studios and future titles.
Sony have done the correct thing in refunding everyone who bought it. Most publishers wouldn't bother.

Considering Sony have proudly advertised times exclusively for just DLC before (i.e CoD), the fact they wouldn't be screaming about exclusively of this game doesn't make sense.
Re: Black Myth: Wukong's Xbox Delay Isn't Due to Platform Limitations, Says Microsoft
Re: Reaction: PlayStation Needs to Take a Long, Hard Look at Itself
This might be one of the worst articles I've ever read on this site. Completely emotionally driven and completely backtracks on all the defending of this title. Also full of assumptions on who did what and what's going to happen with the studios and future titles.
Sony have done the correct thing in refunding everyone who bought it. Most publishers wouldn't bother.
What sensationalist crap

@naruball I found it odd that Demon Souls has body 1/2 instead of male/female. But it is very easy to just say whatever and move on
