Re: Gallery: PS5's Design Is Unorthodox But Unforgettable

I think it's fantastic. If i close my eyes, I can vividly recall the PSONE, PS2 and PS3 but the PS4 barely resonates. The PS5 is clearly going to be divisive and I think it will be a lot more impressive in the flesh, but I feel Sony have done a phenomenal job with the design.

@Tharsman trust me, I'm not so high - minded to think that way and I'm always happy to listen to multiple perspectives and change my stance when wrong. In the case of the PS3 and BC, the proof is in the pudding - the removal of the latter had no negative impact on sales (worth noting that only ps2 support was removed).

Additionally I'm a proponent of BC and would be ecstatic if a fully-featured BC function was implemented. At the same time I'm pragmatic enough that if Sony chose to only include the purported ps4 BC and focus the rest of their efforts on ps5 software, I would not feel I'm being hard done by.

@Tharsman I'd be careful about the definition of heavily criticised. Certainly a vocal minority were upset but the reduced cost that came with the removal of BC (and other factors) did wonders for sales.

I'm an old-head and I try to look at things as objectively as possible. BC is a nice-to-have for sure but it's not a defining feature by any means (and I spend at least half my gaming time on "retro" games). If we look at the big picture no company has ever done it right over multiple generations although this is not limited to gaming by any means.

Your point about optical media is well-taken. In a past life I supported optical engineers so I fully understood both the similarities and the rather costly differences between optical media.

@Tharsman yes, obviously Nintendo's earlier consoles all featured different media, just as PS1,2 AND 3 did (the fact that they are all optical is noted) and BC is clearly an easier proposition in the digital age.

And you'll have to forgive me for forgetting about the miserable 7800 and it's 1 million units sold and an optional adapter that failed to make any significant impression.

My overall point is that it's interesting there has been a reversal in stance related to BC and it's really only this generation or the one prior that a big deal has been made of it (made all the more interesting considering how quickly games are discounted and how ubiquitous they've become)

Re: PS5 Fans Are Panicking Over Backwards Compatibility

@Tharsman Nintendo did not offer any BC on home consoles until the Wii. NES, SNES, N64 and GC were all completely stand-alone and same for Switch if I'm not mistaken. In fact, you could argue that Nintendo were the first company to leverage their back catalogue and sell "remasters" of older properties. Sony led the way offering BC when no other console maker had previously done so (Atari, no. Sega, no). Interesting that they've changed their respective stances and this is the generation where gamers want to draw the line.

@shuvamg009 "Not the first time either. Everytime they dominate a generation, then absolutely botch the next ( atleast since PS2 days)..."

So.... they've botched it... once? I gather you mean the PS3? The 5th biggest selling console of all time. The one that sold more than all SEGA consoles combined? The one that sold more than the XBOX 360 which is the best selling Microsoft console?

Nice combination of generalisation and hyperbole (everytime! absolutely!) but pretty much any other console manufacturer would kill for Sony's track record (ranked 1,2,3 and 5 in sales) and based on consumer interest, the PS5 might do okay too.

Re: PS5's DualSense Controller Has Vastly Improved Analogue Sticks

@GoblinKing86 same here. I have 5 controllers, all used frequently and all stored properly (for the most part). All are fully functional and in good nick. In saying that, I don't think the amount of gaming me and my family puts in even comes close to the amount some of our fellow posters do, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's plenty of instances of wear and tear even if well treated.

Re: PlayStation Employees Working from Home Until 30th April, Will Receive Full Pay and Equipment Budget

@NomNom The company I work for is 100% virtual (meaning we don't have any offices) so I predominantly work from home and I work just as hard as I did compared to when I worked in an office. In fact, a lot of people end up working too hard when they make the shift to working at home as the lines between work and life start to blur.

Anyway, good on Sony for taking care of their people.
