Anyway yeah, pretty healthy selection of games this week. I see that Bedlam's finally come out. If it had come out in August as originally announced I'd probably have picked it up just based on the screenshots, but with the Uncharted collection last week, Wasteland 2 and Talos Principle this week and Fallout 4 just a few weeks away I can't really spare the dosh at the moment. It might be just as well, after watching the trailer I was struck by how awful the main character's voice over is. I'm not sure I could handle several hours of that.
I can't speak to reports that stuff like download speed and shareplay have improved with this update though it's good news if true, but the lack of a search button for the new communities feature is a ridiculous oversight that they really need to fix ASAP.
And yeah, generally speaking it's kind of lame that all the major additions for this update are based around social functions that no one really cares about while more important and much requested features like folders and the ability to set your status to appear offline still haven't surfaced.
@MrBert "Burn to Fight" makes sense in English, though it's certainly an awkward bit of phrasing.
Among its other meanings, "burn" in English can mean to have an intense desire, so "Burn to Fight" basically means, "To have an intense desire to fight."
@get2sammyb Sounds like S.O.P for Gamestop to me, actually. Get just enough copies for the pre-orders, plus maybe one or two more. They are ALL ABOUT the pre-orders.
@Gamer83 Yeah and the ghost of Move has not been fully exorcised from this title. There are countless moments where you use the analog stick, triggers or touch pad to simulate movements like opening latches, turning handles, pulling switches or turning pages in a book. It's all a bit silly, but possibly they left it in to add a bit more (meaningless) interactivity to what is essentially an interactive horror movie, albeit a very good one.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya True, no game is above criticism. Personally, I just find the fetishization of retail titles a bit annoying, especially when they're referred to as "real" games, implying that smaller downloadable titles are somehow illegitimate regardless of quality.
In the end though, it's a personal preference. Some people are missing out and I feel kind of sorry for them, There's lots of creativity, originality and fun to be found in smaller titles if one is willing to give them a chance, while when it comes to AAA bigger isn't always better.
@Dodoo I hear you. Personally I'm okay with the indie titles myself (Though calling something like Grow Home "indie" is a stretch.) but I can understand the desire for more AAA titles as some people associate the AAA label with being "real" games or being "more substantial" even if that's not always the case.
@get2sammyb Yeah, not a 9, 7 seems about right and despite what some seem to think, is not a bad score at all.
Then again, I'm not a great fan of review scores. They serve a purpose, but one man's 7 is another man's 9. The actual body of the review is more useful and interesting and it's sad that many skip it just to see what the score is, as if that tells them anything.
@Dodoo People keep asking for Knack and I figure it's bound to happen eventually. It got mixed reviews, but I for one really enjoyed it. A sequel could be really good if it builds on the promise of the first game, but seems unlikely.
As for First Light and Ground Zeroes, both HAVE made the cut. First Light back in January and Ground Zeroes in June. I'm not sure what part of the world you're in, but the lineup has been pretty consistent at least across the US and Europe so far, at least to my knowledge. Maybe you just missed them. If so, too bad. Sony really should implement a feature where PS+ games are automatically added to the accounts of members. It's not fair that someone can miss out on a free game because they forget to "purchase" it before the month is up.
I was committed to buying this no matter what, but so far the reviews have been better than I expected. Definitely looking forward to playing this when it unlocks tonight!
Just picked up TWD Season One, The Wolf Within and Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments in the current NA PSN flash sale, so I'll be checking those out.
@Jonny Not only is it not crossbuy, the PS4 version costs more. I was all ready to buy it, having never played it, until I saw that. Now I'm gonna wait for a sale.
@Gamer83 If the review has informed you of what type of game this is and whether or not you would like it (in this case, no) then it has done its job. The rest is opinions. No offense, but it doesn't really matter if you agree or not, the fact that you think this game, of a type that you admit you don't enjoy, doesn't deserve the score it got is irrelevant.
@stevejcrow Misleading? I guess it depends on your point of view. I took advantage of a deal around the time PS4 launched and got three years of PS+ at $35 each. That's less than $3 a month. The included games every month more than offer good value for that, the discounts are just a bonus as far as I'm concerned.
@SonyInfinity Oh don't worry, calling you an elitist took very little effort on my part. I still have tons of time to play games! Games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
@SonyInfinity You're basically asking, "Where's the fun in being told a story?" and that's just crazy to me. If games like this aren't for you then fair enough don't play them, but why do you care what they're called? If there are certain kinds of games you don't like, don't play them. Trying to argue that they aren't really games just seems petty, pretentious and elitist to me.
@viciousarcanum Improved graphics and, I'm assuming, a better framerate. That's about it. This seems to be for people who missed Journey the first time around or who already own it and don't mind giving it another go on PS4. It's still an amazing game of course, but if you had your fill the first time, there's nothing new here to entice you.
I already have both those games for PS4, but that's the chance ya takes!
Usually we get an announcement a few days before the new month hits. This moth either somebody backed out at the last minute or a game that was planned for inclusion proved unready for release too soon to the deadline to change things up quickly. Either way, a decent lineup for those who don't already own those games though it would've been nice to get the PS4 version of that Sherlock Holmes game. We probably will eventually tough.
@Melucine It means you seem a bit worked up and should try to calm down, basically. You say English is not your native language, as such you may lack the nuance to understand that Sammy isn't bashing Mortal Kombat he's just having a bit of fun. That said, it is possible to love something and still make fun of it. Mortal Kombat IS very silly and that's okay.
@Faruko Of course PSN has competition! Odds are high that if you own a PS4, you also own a PC capable of running most indie games, so unless a game is PS4 exclusive you'll likely find it elsewhere for cheaper. If you're limiting yourself to only playing games on PS4 then you have no one to blame for the lack of options but yourself.
Anyway, as I said before, unless a game is PS4 exclusive the lack of competition within PSN's marketplace is irrelevant. It's well known that any indie game available on both PC and consoles sells best on PC, yet the market is much less saturated on the consoles and games more likely to get attention. Indie devs put their games on consoles as a marketing tool, not because they expect them to sell especially well. If they do, that's a bonus.
@adf86 Right. And ultimately, I don't think the devs care if you buy their game on Steam, PSN or Xbox Live as long as you buy their game. Putting the game on PSN gives their game much needed attention whether you buy it there or not.
@Boerewors "I buy Shovel Knight because I know I can trust these devs, but with indies it's always more or less a gamble."
It's often just as much a gamble with AAA titles. I've gotten as much or more enjoyment out of indies as AAA titles on the PS4 and I know I'd rather gamble $20 than $60.
I would probably be paying The Order: 1886 this weekend, except that I also got a Wii U this week and the half hour or so of The Order I played really, REALLY made me want to play some more Super Mario 3D World.
I'll get back to it eventually, but if I'm gonna play a game that doesn't really do anything new right now, it'll also be one that's also actually fun.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Fair enough, but this isn't like most card games. There's no competitive element, it's entirely single-player. It's essentially a rogue-like RPG with action based combat that uses a customizable deck as the base for creating random dungeons. I don't like CCGs or their virtual counterparts either, but this is actually pretty neat.
People have always been somewhat suspicious of DLC. I'm usually one to give it the benefit of the doubt myself, but when a publisher advertises something (in this case a character) as being an important part of a release and then it turns out it isn't, but wait, here's that thing we advertised only now as the main focus of our DLC, well, I'm not surprised there's a backlash even if in the end it's much ado about nothing.
I wouldn't mind a remastered Uncharted trilogy, or remasters of other PS3/last gen titles if they're games I missed or liked enough to play again and the price is right. But then, unlike some gamers, I realize that the existence of remasters doesn't mean fewer new games will be released, it means more games are being released, period.
@DualWielding Unlikely, but I wouldn't say no to Full Throttle or The Dig remastered. Or Sam & Max Hit the Road for that matter, if they can work out the character rights. How about an updated Zombies Ate My Neighbors? I could definitely go for some of that!
Been looking forward to Apotheon, so it would be nice to get it through PS+. Already have Transistor, but Rogue Legacy is a nice get. Played quite a bit of the PC version and wouldn't mind trying it again on PS4 or Vita. Always nice when PS+ offers a cross-buy game for all platforms.
I love open world games, but I can't honestly think of an open world game where the size of the open world alone was a factor in its favor. As in so many other areas, it's not how big it is, it's what they do with it.
Something died after SR2, definitely. Namely the franchise's desperation to be the poor man's Grand Theft Auto. Yeah, what I've seen of the gameplay for this gives off a definite Heavy Rain vibe. The thing is though, what bothered me about Heavy Rain was never the gameplay but how deadly serious the game took itself despite the fact that story was kind of crap and ultimately didn't make a lot of sense. David Cage's pretentious proclamations about evoking emotions and evolving the gaming medium and blah, blah, blah didn't help matters any.
This is a game that knows exactly what it is and isn't afraid to embrace that. That doesn't mean it'll necessarily be any good, of course. As intrigued as I am I'm holding off for some reviews before I pick this one up, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.
The beta has been available for a while of course, but I have yet to give it a try mostly because I found the pricing and rental periods weird and wasn't especially impressed with the available lineup of games.
