Re: Soapbox: After the Vita's Failure, Why Do People Now Want Console Games on the Go?

@Fight_Teza_Fight NBA 2K18 did do well though, or at least according to Take Two's expectations.

As for Doom, yes, it did poorly in it's UK debut. But again, the UK is not representative of other markets at all! The UK is one of Nintendo's poorest markets.

But sure, FIFA is gonna kill third party support for others who have had success on Switch. /s

Try again.

Re: EA Moving to More Monetisable Open World Games

IceClimbers

Gross. The only EA games I've picked up this generation are Dragon Inquisition and SW Battlefront. The former wasn't all that great, while the latter was rather enjoyable despite being shallow and not playing like the old school ones.

Not interested in pretty much anything they put out these days.

PS: Bayonetta 2 was robbed that year at the Game Awards - it definitely should have won over Dragon Age!

Re: Hands On: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Is a Clumsy, Complicated Sequel

IceClimbers

The beta definitely felt... off. The first one was enjoyable at it's core for what it was, even though it wasn't like the old Pandemic Battlefronts.

The progression system/star cards being tied to lootcrates is disgusting though.

I'll maybe buy this game when it's much cheaper down the line to play the campaign. In the meantime I'll be busy with other games or I'll play some of Pandemic's Battlefront II.

Re: Feature: The Promising PS4 Games of October 2017

IceClimbers

South Park! Working through the games I've picked up over the past few months though. Midway through World 3 on Mario + Rabbids. Pokemon Gold, Steamworld Dig 2, Yakuza 0, and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 are next. Super Mario Odyssey will be my end of year holiday title.

Re: Single Player Games Are Really Struggling Right Now

IceClimbers

I should also point out some of the singleplayer games that have struggled: Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Dishonored II, and Prey.

In my above examples of games that are exceptions, two of those have DLC (RE7, Mario + Rabbids)!

@lixei32 Agreed. All three look excellent.

Re: Single Player Games Are Really Struggling Right Now

IceClimbers

@ShogunRok @get2sammyb Another aspect with those examples to point out is that they're massive open world games with hundreds of hours of content. $60 AAA singleplayer games pretty much have to be open world or have open world elements for people to justify paying full price these days. Even Super Mario Odyssey is evidence of this (granted, Nintendo or Sony 1st party games seem to largely be the exception - people are willing to pay full price for those).

The days of the $60 AAA singlepayer game that's 20 hours or less selling super well are numbered. This year has had a few exceptions with Resident Evil 7 (though that was disappointing in comparison to Capcom's lofty expectations), Nier Automata, and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, however.

There's a few upcoming ones next month that would fall into this category: South Park, Evil Within 2, and Wolfenstein II. We'll see how well these three do, but it wouldn't surprise me if all three struggle.

Re: Square Enix Wants to Focus More on Multiplayer and Service Games Going Forward

IceClimbers

Keep in mind this move to GaaS applies to the AAA scene. In the future, singleplayer AAA games will be few and far between - especially when it comes to western studios -, and the ones that do exist will be open world games (note: Sony and Nintendo will likely still push out a lot of non-open world singleplayer AAA games; this applies to third parties mostly).

The hope here should be that this results in mid-tier development re-emerging from the western studios to cover the singleplayer games. Japanese devs will still put out a lot of singleplayer stuff because they largely don't use AAA budgets.

In the case of Square Enix, I'd expect this to primarily apply to their western studios/Eidos. The Japanese side likely won't be affected as much as most of their output isn't AAA. Final Fantasy is probably the exception though; that's already going GaaS. We'll see what happens with Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts.

Re: E3 2017: Sony Seemingly Skips Rocket League Cross-Console Play

IceClimbers

@Gamer83

That's a Sony fanboy excuse. They don't "lose their competitive edge" at all. There's plenty of reasons to buy a PS4, as it has a range of excellent exclusive titles both 1st and 3rd party.

You can't get Nioh, Nier Automata, Yakuza 0 or Persona 5 on an Xbox One or Nintendo Switch.

For consumer affordable consoles, guess which platform multiplats run best on? PS4 (or PS4 Pro if you consider that affordable). XB1X is niche and not affordable for most.

Which company has almost all of the major marketing deals again? Sony.

There is ZERO excuse for Sony not getting in on this.

Re: Opinion: Why Sony Won't Support Cross-Console Play

IceClimbers

There's no justifying this. By staying out of this they miss out on:
-Super Duper Graphics Pack
-dedicated servers
-Realms/infinite worlds
-cross-platform play
-DLC cross buy across all platforms.

Isolating your user base from everyone else is a poor, anti-consumer move. Terrible move by Sony.

Re: Feature: 5 PS4 Exclusives That Will Wow at E3 2017

IceClimbers

Spider-Man of course! Huge Spidey fan, and I think Insomniac can create the best Spider-Man game since the movie tie-in Spider-Man 2 on the PS2/Xbox.

I'm really excited for The Last of Us Part II, but that game is a few years off, and I don't think we'll see it at E3. I hope we hear confirmation of the Emma Stone rumors for Death Stranding though.

Beyond that, I think we'll see Sucker Punch's new game. I also think the 4chan rumor about Monster Hunter 5 is real, though that's 3rd party.

Re: Talking Point: Has Holiday 2016 Devalued New Games?

IceClimbers

@BertoFlyingFox @getsammy2b Then at the opposite end of the spectrum is Nintendo, who pretty much never drops the prices of their games until they decide to release their Selects line several years in.

Both ends are extremes honestly. Surely there's a healthy middleground for the industry?
