[rant] I wonder if the Push Square crew will give their #1 to Uncharted. I know it's kind of obligatory at this point, but I don't think anyone will be talking about Uncharted 4 ten years from now. It was basically Rise of the Tomb Raider with slightly creamier graphics, a better story (subject to opinion) and worse stealth (TR was closer to Last of Us in that regard than UC4, lol), but without a speck of the incredible semi-open-world metroid-vania gameplay that makes Tomb Raider amazing. [/rant]
Noctis was okay but in my opinion the protagonist of FFXV was the whole gang, and collectively I do believe they are the best protagonist in the series. Despite my general disdain for Prompto.
FFXV for me, easy. December's obviously going to be Last Guardian, even though I'm not as in love with it as plenty of others. Nothing wrong with that. I just would have preferred Trico to be a squirrel, that's all.
@Ralizah Definitely. We've seen MUCH better graphics on PS4, even on the base model.
Really want to love this game, but I do have a hard time dropping so much money on a relatively short, one-go experience. I'l see how I feel after I finish FFXV
Get better Sammy! Looking forward to this. It's getting middle-of-the-road reviews as far as your usual AAA holiday releases go, but the knocks (camera and controls) seem to be the same ones that could be levied at ICO and SotC, so I don't think they'll bug me that much.
I'm gonna assume these features will be in the next-generation PlayStation, which will probably also have 4K Blu-Ray support. All the games you can play on this you can play on the old model. I can wait.
@get2sammyb Do you have any thoughts on IGN's criticism that the lack of consistency in game benefits hurts the overall feel of the system? For example, some games looked brilliant at 1080p while others looked way better in 4K, while still others didn't really take advantage of the extra resolution or HDR, and it feels difficult to know which benefits you're getting with which game.
If BBC's Planet Earth 2 does for 4K home media what the original Planet Earth did for Blu-Ray, I think it'll have been a mistake for Sony not to jump on the opportunity to include a compatible drive. I know they've got price balance to worry about and all, but still :/
@Hego I enjoyed Skyrim vastly more than Witcher III I don't think it's fair to say that one is better "quality" than the other, because they're both great to different people for different reasons.
@Dichotomy Nintendo seems to have kept their dev kits to a small circle of trusted developers (basically, internal and Ubi), so Western devs like Rockstar probably know as much about the NX's hardware as we do. They can't announce a port without at least knowing the CPU architecture
@smoothi1981 The headset will be the same resolution regardless of how powerful your PS4 is, unfortunately.
It should be said that these same issues affect even the highest-end VR experiences available at the moment. I would not recommend buying a headset if you're just wanting a bigger, virtual screen--not only can it not do it very well, that's a waste of VR's potential.
This game has such a negative connotation, and I hate that. Personally the PC build is still in my top 5 games of the year, and I even bought a copy for my friend to play. I think gameplay-wise it kicks the ever-loving crapola out of UC4, and also (call me ridiculous, whatever) I think it actually looks better, too. Some of the puzzles are mind-blowingly well designed and very Zelda-like. I love the Metroid-style exploration. I dunno, I just think it's a must-play and a triumph of design
It has big shoes to follow after the amazing 3DS game.
...Also, sex is really just sex and sometimes kids have it because they're dumb and curious and excited. And sometimes it works the way nature wants it to, and the teen girl gets pregnant.
But from another point of view, Len is canonically 14 and this song was orchestrated and produced by grown men. At least the lyrics are pretty hilarious?
Looks like brilliant fun. As always, "in-game footage" probably means in-game on a very capable PC (they've actually done this before, with both Battlefield 4 and 3 trailers)--but BF4 looks great on PS4 as it is so I doubt there will be anything to complain about. It's all about gameplay, after all.
@Heavyman99 That's what I was thinking. At first I thought, nah, the two don't really have identical fanbases. Then I thought: I'm definitely getting the new Pokemon, and I probably won't have the time over holiday break for two massive RPGs. So I'm at least one sale lost because of that timing (at launch anyway).
Really good review. Glad you found a really nice planet towards the end of your review period... it's just sad that such encounters are so unlikely. Many players will never see a planet like that.
I just can't imagine why someone would want to spend 60 hours exploring samey planets when they could spend the same amount of time exploring lovingly crafted worlds in any number of other games.
I can't say with a straight face that it's "truly amazing". It has features that I would find "truly amazing" if they were part of a much more intuitive and mechanically interesting game, but they're not.
@Shellcore If you want a game where you can walk (or fly) forever across space and subtly varying landscapes (lets not kid ourselves--none of the worlds in that video are dramatically different from the others. Some have more water, some have more trees, some have less of both), then this is the game for you. And it does being a game like that better than any other game I've ever played... but I'm not sure at this point how long it'll hold my attention.
Sorry guys, but Uncharted doesn't have the characters to pull of a film. Nathan Drake is NOT Indiana Jones. Indy doesn't kill thousands of people trying to get whatever treasure he's after. And even Sully is basically one dimensional (although it's a delightful dimension)--not to mention the cookie cutter villains. I think they could probably get a good film out of The Last of Us though, if it was handled well.
Seems expensive consider RotTR and Just Cause 3 were in a 2-pack for $30 during the Steam sale. But the game (this game) is still worth $60, was back in November, was when it came out on PC, and will still be this holiday.
Sure it will. I believe it will be exactly what they've been promising: an infinitely big, procedurally generated world with more of an emphasis on the spectacle of expansiveness than on actual things to do. I don't think they'll have any problem meeting that expectation. The problem is, that doesn't sound all that interesting to me.
I love RPG's, but the lack of animations for little things is a turn-off for me ever since Animal Crossing got me hooked on them. Even something like Skyrim shows your character hammering an anvil or stirring a potion while you navigate the text-based crafting menus.
"ZIP" is an acronym coined by the United States Postal Service that stands for Zone Improvement Plan. Calling the code by this name had about as much impact on mail delivery efficiency as Blast Processing had on the Genesis, and I believe the USPS doesn't even own the trademark anymore, but the name has stuck.
Hmm. I think it'll be mentioned. I don't think we'll get the whole expose treatment like PS4 got in Spring 2013, but I think we'll hear that it's coming.
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (yes, I am putting aside my feelings about the first game and I'm powering through these campaigns so I can finally get to UC4. Impressions? Well, graphically, it's mindblowing that Among Thieves and Drake's Deception ever ran on the PS3. And of course, the action setpieces and cutscenes are predictably well done. On the gameplay front, I still take issue with anyone who says they're anything more than average hallway shooters, and they're eclipsed in polish and complexity by games that came both before and after.)
Overwatch (I loved the game so much that I bought it multiple times across multiple platforms just so I could play with all my friends. It's easily my favorite online shooter since Modern Warfare 2, and in my opinion sets a new precedent for the sheer amount of gloss that can be applied to a game. It helps that it's pitch-perfectly balanced and a blast to play, too).
I've played Overwatch more than most single player games that have come out in the last two years ALREADY, and it's technically the first day of release still. In addition, I've bought three copies — two for me (one PS4 and one PC) and one for my buddy. I've never felt this way about an online game before... maybe not since Modern Warfare 2. So all you naysayers can shove it. Go play games you enjoy and stop trying to downplay this one. It's already a massive success and it's here to stay :/
@MadAussieBloke Odd With revisit-able areas and way more to collect than just nondescript "treasures," I would say Tomb Raider has much more replayability (for anyone who loved games like Banjo Kazooie and has to collect everything ever, anyways). I also enjoy the gunplay in TR far more than even UC4, but I think that's just because you can stealth and use the bow and it makes me feel badass
Oh man, when I voted and saw that Drake's Fortune had only 2% (and less than a third of Golden Abyss' votes) I was so relieved. Drake's Fortune is lucky to be considered in the same series as the others, considering how repetitive and dated it is. It turned me off to the franchise for so long that I never got the resolve to play the sequels until now.
Ooh! Also, do these DLCs have anything like Dawnguard in Skyrim, where you actually may want to NOT buy the DLC if you don't want all the NPCs to be killed by vampires whenever you fast travel?
How does the DLC integrate into the game flow if you haven't started (or completed) the base game? Do you recommend beating the game first, or can I buy all the DLC and play the game as though the extra areas were just part of the original?
The visuals look really souped up somehow, like they took what made Battlefront sparkle and shoved it into the Frostbite engine. I'm sure we'll be looking at a beautiful game, and BF4 was already quite pretty. Hope the gameplay mixes it up enough to draw in curious bystanders
I'm really glad this is getting great scores. I've come to the understanding though that Naughty Dog and I are on different levels when it comes to defining good gameplay; the first three Uncharted games (to me) felt like pretty corridor shooters with above-average cutscenes in between skirmishes. This reads like it's about the same, but with somewhat wider corridors. I hope everyone who loves that kind of thing finds their fix here ^-^ I'll give it a rent and then go back to waiting for info on the next Tomb Raider
