@The_New_Butler Sony has stuff like their other technology and film divisions and Microsoft has literally everything regarding their PC market like Windows and Surface, of which that audience is probably considerably larger than the people who squarely buy their Xbox products
Nintendo literally only has games and game consoles. They're starting to expand into other multimedia ventures like the Universal theme park and licensing out their IPs to film studios like with that upcoming Mario movie, but any other ventures to bring their game experiences to other platforms like their mobile efforts were extremely short lived and not very well received for the most part
I do agree Sony's strategy is still not ambitious to the extent of what Microsoft is doing, but they've at least broadened their horizons. Nintendo is still very old-fashioned. Some would argue it's a pretty strict mindset about valuing that people only play on their consoles if they want to play their games or games featuring their franchises. That's why we get stuff like them DMCA'ing people making fan games or uploading their music to YT
@ATaco I doubt the multiplatform aspect of a lot of them was meant to be the focus as much as the advantage of them being day one Game Pass releases. I think they said 27 of those 30 were all launching on Game Pass and a few like Stalker were timed exclusives. It seems like Game Pass and expanding to PC and the cloud is basically going to be where Microsoft stands out this gen since they probably know they won't be able to beat Sony or Nintendo in just hardware sales
@The_New_Butler The thing with Nintendo is that they're probably the one super traditional console maker left in that console and game making is their only facet of business, and they pretty much have nothing else they could generate nearly as much of a revenue on
I don't see them doing something as drastic as putting Mario Odyssey or Zelda on Steam because unlike Sony and Microsoft they have literally nothing else to fall back on
All modern PlayStation box art got rid of that. Even third party exclusives don't have the "Only on PlayStation" thing anymore, as do recent releases like Returnal, Ratchet, Demon's Souls, Sackboy and Spider-Man. It seems like that kind of branding is dead within the company now
This isn't necessarily indicative that a PC version is on the way immediately although that would be cool
Based on the persistent rumors, open-world Sonic sounds cool on paper but considering Sonic Team's last 3D Sonic game wasn't even that good as a super linear experience I have some pretty big reservations
They also REALLY need to get Sonic's control right in 3D. He felt simultaneously too stiff and loose at the same time in Forces. The momentum was all over the place
I've tried PS Now myself. I subscribed when Metal Gear Solid 4 came out on the service and honestly it works alright, the big problem is that it feels way less robust compared to something like xCloud in terms of latency and the mixed bag in terms of streaming quality (and I have pretty damn good internet) and I personally think the constant rotation of games after such short periods of time makes it harder to really invest in the library as a whole, especially the first party PlayStation stuff and PlayStation exclusives. I felt like I was on a really fast timer when it came to playing MGS4 on PC although I think it's still up on Now for PS4/PS5?
@Agramonte If the other 2D Metroid games are any indication this will be well worth its full price tag. Metroid is one of those series that doesn't have a game that I can straight up call bad or awful
Metroid has traditionally never raked in the cash or sales of other big name Nintendo franchises, especially the 2D ones. It was usually stuff like Prime and Other M doing signifcantly better
The EA Bond games were actually amazing. Apparently a sequel to Nightfire was supposed to happen but got shafted after Brosnan was let go from the role since he was the facial model for the character in games from that era
@Deadlyblack Well Skate is technically already known since Skate 4 was announced last year at EA Play and they said not to expect any future updates for a while so it's probably a ways off
If Dead Space is returning all bets are off that it's actually Dead Space 4 since Visceral's been long defunct as an EA developer
I'm calling complete reboot on this like what happened with Star Wars Battlefront 2015 and maybe a remaster a la Mass Effect of the original Dead Space trilogy for current and last gen platforms
@Alpha_Pulse SFV's another big example. Sony actually worked really closely with Capcom to ensure there was parity between PS4 and PC when it came to SFV's online experience and being able to play against people on the other platform
Technically Sony's done cross play and stuff of that nature with PC before. It was always with rival consoles they drew the line but I personally think it shouldn't even be that way anymore with how mostly platform agnostic this gaming generation looks to be in the future
@Cherip-the-Ripper I think it's just perceived familiarity, platform preference or just bring more comfortable on one console if you ask me
I personally have no problem with buying different games in a franchise on multiple systems, and Psychonauts definitely ain't stopping me either. I guess it's convenient in my case that the original is also on PC
@Syndrome Exactly. I don't want this generation to turn into a spending competition between two console makers but the talent that they both got as a result of having deep enough pockets should be noted. Stuff like Hellblade 2, Starfield, Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 coming out of Xbox as exclusives has made me pay way more attention to them as of late and I'm honestly surprised it took Sony this long to acquire Insomniac given their history together
@Milktastrophe Wasn't Fallout 76 primarily the Austin or Dallas studio and not the guys who primarily worked on stuff like Skyrim and Fallout 3 & 4? Apparently the Austin studio were the guys responsible for modifying the Creation Engine to work with that game and what they were planning for it so they might've been involved particularly early on
I know Todd Howard oversaw that game's development but I don't think they were sharing a lot of the same team from the numbered Fallout entries since those guys by that point were already prepping for Starfield and possibly TESVI as well
@FatalBubbles In terms of exclusives I'd also add Killer Instinct 2013, Master Chief Collection, Rare Replay and Sunset Overdrive to that list. I also heard apparently Sea of Thieves is way better now than it was when it launched
Killer Instinct in particular is probably "best fighting game of the decade" material with how great its gameplay and especially its online were. It's really not that Xbox didn't have exclusives. They just didn't constantly interest me like the ones from Sony and Nintendo were doing, but to give them credit, them adding Bethesda and Ninja Theory to their internal studios is going to make me pay a lot more attention to them now. I actually have faith Starfield will be good since it looks like it's the A team working on it again instead of whoever was making F76 and their mobile stuff
@Jaz007 The only super high profile acquisition Microsoft has really made is ZeniMax if you really think about it
Both Obsidian and Ninja Theory have made multiplaform games. Hell Ninja Theory made Heavenly Sword exclusively for Sony, but they're also still relatively small developers that like studios like Guerrilla and Insomniac, highlight the kind of variety I think both console manufacturers look for when it comes to bolstering their first party output
Bethesda probably stings a bit more for people because by comparison they had a way larger multiplatform presence, but that whole thing started with Xbox to begin with. They were very early supporters with stuff like Morrowind, and Xbox players got all the expansions to Fallout 3 and 4, Oblivion and Skyrim way ahead of Sony users. That in addition to their commitment to PC meant that if there was any major big name that could've been seen as more aligned with Xbox in terms of support and output, it kind of is them. I'm not saying it's necessarily good and I certainly hope that Microsoft now focuses on making good use out of what they have, but there are legitimate business and relationship reasonings for why Sony and MS do what they do. It's always in the name of promoting competition, no matter how unethical it's perceived as being. I'm just glad that Sony isn't going to be a clear winner in all this now and that we have things to look forward to from all sides of the industry.
The last thing I hope for is that this generation becomes a comptetition of who can buy what and lock games to what platform. Sony and Microsoft need to use what they have now instead of worrying about what they can buy with all the money they're making off of console sales or game sales. That way more games come out and more people buy consoles. Healthy competition basically
EDIT: Also Sunset Overdrive was great. I don't think there was a disparity in quality whatsoever. It's probably the Xbox One's best exclusive bar none and I hope it continues even if it's Sony property now
Considering Sony didn't build every studio from the ground up either I find it pretty eye roll worthy when either publisher talks about "nurturing talent from the ground up" or whatever BS PR speak they use to paint themselves as pure heroes of the industry
Both Sony and Microsoft are guilty of this. I can at least understand why they'd buy up talent like Insomniac and Bethesda though given the pure leverage it gives them as console makers.
Characters with their face covered partway by an eyepatch or mask is starting to really become a trend in JRPGs as of late with both this and Xenoblade Chronicles 2
if this game doesn't cure cancer, end world hunger and completely abolish racism and sexism with how many conspiracies are surrounding this game i will be extremely disappointed
@CielloArc I think Switch support is still up in the air considering Microsoft and Nintendo have been pretty buddy-buddy as of late and there are a couple of Xbox Game Studios titles on Switch with the Ori duology
Bethesda has more autonomy than most of the Microsoft owned studios given they're still going to be self-publishing and remain as a seperate entity not entirely folded into Xbox's other studios unlike developers like Ninja Theory and Obsidian, so maybe Switch might have more of a future in terms of legacy ports rather than new games
@Col_McCafferty The story behind it is SIE approached Insomniac first about doing a licensed IP game and then Insomniac went to Marvel to get the license to make Spider-Man games since it had just lapsed for Activision at the time
Insomniac however before settling on Spider-Man were actually allowed to choose any Marvel character and specifically decided Spider-Man would work for both his character traits and their experience gained on open world traversal gameplay from working on Sunset Overdrive, but realistically any other Marvel character had a chance of being selected
All Sony really did was start the conversation and eventually they got publishing rights, but Marvel owns the games still.
@playstation1995 Phil never said he wasn't trying to take away games from PlayStation. He straight up said Microsoft were at least going to honor the current exclusivity deals on Deathloop and GhostWire but he never really made concrete promises for the future
I still don't get why you'd expect him to keep things as they are when he bought them for nearly 8 billion dollars amidst all the complaining and bickering that there are no exclusives worth playing on Xbox lol
@ScottyG Bruh Bethesda's support on Switch was trash lol
iD Software basically made up 90-95% of their output with the DOOM games. MachineGames put out New Colossus and Youngblood on Switch but not the preceding two Wolfenstein games they made, and Bethesda Game Studios put Skyrim and a bunch of ports of their mobile games like Fallout Shelter and freaking Elder Scrolls Blades lol
@adrianthealchemist It probably won't be exclusive to Windows 10 Store either considering Xbox Game Studios have supported Steam even with games that are slated for Series X like Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite
When they mean exclusive to PC, they basically mean "as long as it's a launcher on PC, you can play it"
@nessisonett Oh please if anyone even tried to suggest Sony get back into handheld gaming they'd probably just be like "well you all have phones and Nintendo Switches right? You don't need us"
@Loftimus I mean I find "hate Bethesda" to be a pretty stupid solution as well
They were probably bleeding money from Fallout 76 and were more than willing to sell themselves off to Microsoft to get better resources and more money injected into their development for upcoming games. Plus Bethesda games to my knowledge always or mostly sold better on Xbox and PC compared to PlayStation so it's not like many more people will migrate over in light of this development
After the Nintendo Direct especially I expect Switch to probably wipe the floor with Microsoft and Sony for another few months in light of stuff like Metroid Dread and Shin Megami Tensei V
SONY ONLY HAS THE FILM RIGHTS AND DISNEY OWNS EVERYTHING ELSE RELATED TO THE CHARACTER, INCLUDING COMICS, TV, VIDEO GAMES AND MERCHANDISE
SONY'S ONLY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE PLAYSTATION GAMES ARE VIRTUE BY OWNING THE DEVELOPER AND HANDLING PUBLISHING. DISNEY STILL RETAINS THE RIGHTS TO THE GAMES AND THE LICENSE ITSELF
HOW MANY TIMES DOES THIS HAVE TO BE EXPLAINED. SPIDER-MAN IS NOT A SONY CHARACTER.
No Pete, I'm sorry that there are people who legitimately had the expectation Microsoft were actually going to keep your games multiplatform after literally buying you for more than Disney paid for Lucasfilm and Marvel combined
Really. We can be really dumb sometimes
This is really funny considering Sony allegedly tried to pay for timed exclusivity on Starfield for PS5 as late as literally months before Microsoft stepped in. I bet literally no one on this site would be complaining if that was the outcome instead because "pLayStAtIOn dA bEsT"
If it actually ends up happening I still think PS5 is the way this game is meant to be played. It's clear this PS4 version will probably be significantly cut down and scaled back to fit the hardware. It'll especially be paired back on how seamless the load times between entering different parts of each Archstone through the mist portals or entering a new Archstone from the Nexus
@feral1975 Actually even post-Microsoft buyout Double Fine committed to the game being multiplatform. The game was never going to be cancelled or delayed for PS4 owners. Microsoft also acquired InXile and Obsidian ahead of their respective releases of The Outer Worlds and Wasteland 3 as multiplatform games and they remained multiplatform, with Obsidian also given the go-ahead to continue development of the Switch port that would launch a few months later. The only thing that happened after the MS-acquisition was that when the game received its latest delay it gave Double Fine time to prepare a Series X|S version alongside the existing console and PC platforms
@Col_McCafferty If anything I think third parties are kind of reacting the exact opposite way.
It's fine if you personally don't use or prefer Game Pass or have your own personal reasons for disliking it but a lot of people probably wouldn't have even gotten into the Xbox ecosystem had it not been such a tempting proposition as long as new-gen games keep hiking in price and it's becoming increasingly harder to save up for specific games on a regular basis
This whole situation likely wouldn't have happened at all if the Xbox One actually stuck the landing and didn't almost completely decimate their reputation on day 1, but now it's clear they no longer just care about the hardware side of things since trying to best Sony in that regard would be extremely difficult with how much consumer goodwill and recognizability their brand has in comparison. Their whole strategy now is it doesn't really matter what way you play the game because if it's on a device that they have control over, you give them the money. Xbox isn't just the console anymore and that's more what third parties realize. Hell it's because of Game Pass Xbox is finally getting good JP content so they are improving in a lot of ways
@Col_McCafferty If boycotting is a solution you clearly think is going to work so well, go for it but considering Game Pass has the backing of third parties like Square, SEGA and EA you're probably not going to get very far
Game Pass isn't even meant to be a proper replacement for full priced games since they disappear from your console/PC as soon as you cancel, so it's basically just Netflix or Blockbuster for games. If you want to actually own your games you're still paying the same price you would for a PlayStation or Nintendo game. Game Pass just has extra convenience but it's not necessarily spelling the death of people putting their games at retail. If you want to buy a game like Psychonauts, Starfield or whatever else from Xbox's first party devs, you're still going to be forking over the extra cash
Sounds like you're only suggesting this out of fanboy spite
@Col_McCafferty Except they never use the term "free on Game Pass". It's only about playing it Day 1 on Game Pass alongside hundreds of other games since that's what people subscribe to GP for.

Re: Bethesda Apologises to PS5, PS4 Fans 'P*ssed' at Exclusivity
No Pete, I'm sorry that there are people who legitimately had the expectation Microsoft were actually going to keep your games multiplatform after literally buying you for more than Disney paid for Lucasfilm and Marvel combined
Really. We can be really dumb sometimes
This is really funny considering Sony allegedly tried to pay for timed exclusivity on Starfield for PS5 as late as literally months before Microsoft stepped in. I bet literally no one on this site would be complaining if that was the outcome instead because "pLayStAtIOn dA bEsT"
Re: PS4 Demon's Souls Discovered in PlayStation Database
If it actually ends up happening I still think PS5 is the way this game is meant to be played. It's clear this PS4 version will probably be significantly cut down and scaled back to fit the hardware. It'll especially be paired back on how seamless the load times between entering different parts of each Archstone through the mist portals or entering a new Archstone from the Nexus
Re: Psychonauts 2 Will Also Release on PS4 This August
Re: Psychonauts 2 Will Also Release on PS4 This August
Re: Psychonauts 2 Will Also Release on PS4 This August
Re: Psychonauts 2 Will Also Release on PS4 This August
@Col_McCafferty Except they never use the term "free on Game Pass". It's only about playing it Day 1 on Game Pass alongside hundreds of other games since that's what people subscribe to GP for.
