Re: Sony to Raise Money for Australia with a Month of Livestream Fundraisers

leucocyte

@FullbringIchigo - i disagree that "doing a stream takes very little effort on their part". it takes way more organising to get the WWS teams involved than simply putting a theme for sale on psn - which I do agree should also be a possibility.. i'd rather donate via psn than on a livestream, as i'm very unlikely to have the time to tune in.

Re: EA: The Things We're Doing on PS5 Will Blow Your Mind

leucocyte

this is the same blake jorgensen that said "We’re also very excited about Anthem. We think it’s a fabulous game.. I think our original expectations of the game were probably too low" before it came out. then the most recent investor call sort of forgot to mention it even exists..

Re: Days Gone Patch 1.61 Reduces the Game's File Size

leucocyte

i feel for the people on data caps that have had this from the beginning. regardless of how good the support has been, the size of the patches has been ridiculously excessive, and numerous.. must easily be 300gb+ of download for just one game.

Re: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Describes Dreams as a 'Ten Year' Project

leucocyte

@kyleforrester87 - Mm is a fairly small studio, so its costs in relation to most big AAA projects are nowhere near as substantial, it probably doesn't need to sell 5m+. but i think sony will need to market it heavily and consistently, to at least get the ball rolling.. where's the incentive to create something great if there's very few people around to play/experience it?.

Re: Rumour: Cyberpunk 2077 May Have Been Delayed Because It Runs Badly on PS4 and Xbox One

leucocyte

the game was announced in 2012, and the first teaser trailer was in 2013. so the game has been in development even before the PS4/XB1 launched, and while it's true developers generally get better at optimising for console platforms further into its lifecycle, the specs of those systems are a fixed resource which has been known all along - so seems a bit foolhardy to design for several iterative generations of hardware later and then be surprised it runs like crap.

Re: Poll: How Much Does PS5 Backwards Compatibility Matter to You?

leucocyte

nice to have but not bothered about it personally. in fact, even no PS4 BC wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. i'm not overly bothered about playing PS4 games again, and i have no backlog, don't really buy much stuff on psn, and i won't be getting rid of my PS4 pro anyway. i never had a PS1 or PS2, and just can't see me wanting to play games from those unless they were completely remade (not just remastered) for PS5. i have a lot PS3 games (far more than I do for PS4) so i'd find BC for that far more attractive, but unless it was improving performance of those games, i probably wouldn't use it much either. i still don't think it's at all possible that sony will be able to do PS3 backwards compatibility through emulation.. though the gaikai solution they have for PS3 games on PSNow is probably not sustainable for the long term.

Re: Innocuous Gag Drives Fresh PS5 Reveal Rumours

leucocyte

@Ken_Kaniff - so sony should basically just rush in to announce its plans to appease every rumour, report, hoax, outlandish claim on twitter, "the grapevine", or wherever else?. it does that and it loses all control of its message and cadence. for all these "insiders", etc. it's like feeding time at the zoo..

Re: European Survey on Next-Gen Suggests Gamers Want Better Graphics Above All Else on PS5

leucocyte

i don't really care on resolutions beyond 1080p to be honest, so i hope games will have more options on PS5, so that 1080p/60fps will be more or the less the default performance over resolution option. i don't need 2880p checkerboarded up to 8K to be then supersampled back to HD. really high frame rates like 120fps just look really odd to me, i just don't find it very realistic or immersive. i also think it'll be more difficult to show improvements in gfx, most trailers are on youtube or streamed events, which are already using quite a lot of compression for video..

A much better CPU than PS4 should help with physics/AI, but not sure we're going to see much of an evolutionary leap in AI. maybe if PS6 has tensor cores when developers have had a chance to get more adept with them...

personally, i'd like game development times to get shorter.. but that's extremely unlikely. but having studios work on the one game for 4,5,6 years is just not productive..

Re: The Last of Us 2 Job Listing Asks for PC Experience, Has Some PlayStation Fans in an Uproar

leucocyte

don't see anything there other than a generic job listing, and it's far from indication that last of us 2 on PC is imminent. also, PS5 won't be using AMD GCN graphics architecture, but AMD's new RDNA gpu architecture, so it's more than likely they're just looking for any graphics programmer with any GPU experience. i wouldn't be hugely surprised if there's a PS5 patch or upgrade buff for TLoU2.

Re: Poll: Will PlayStation Exclusives on PC Affect Your PS5 Purchasing Intent?

leucocyte

@Hengist - three bricked windows 10 installs after forced ms updates, it's been nothing but problems. i absolutely detest windows 10, it's a steaming pile of s***, but i'm forced to use it at work. i end up doing most of my work running a linux VM with virtualbox - so i just need to backup the VM to the network. that way when ms inevitably bricks windows 10 again, i can use the VM on any other machine, while the laptop gets rebuilt.

Re: Poll: Will PlayStation Exclusives on PC Affect Your PS5 Purchasing Intent?

leucocyte

@VGScrapbook "To whoever may be frustrated about games losing exclusivity to a specific platform, ask yourself how such a decision actually hurts you"

if as this survey suggests, 1/3 of people ditch the playstation platform, lower install base makes it less lucrative to develop for, so fewer games will get made/released for it. just look at this gen, PS4 has had almost double the number of games released for it compared to XB1 - sure most of the "big" games are released multiplatform, but in some cases developers have prioritised PS4 over XB1. a situation like that effects everyone who prefers to play on playstation. under no circumstance will i ever play games on windows, even if that ends up being the only place to play sony's worldwide studio games.

Re: Sony Slogan Change Gives Weight to Massive PS5 Leak

leucocyte

not sure i'd believe any of that, to be honest. seems like it's repeating a lot of rumours or educated guesswork. i'd be very surprised if sony announced the price 8 months before it launches, even if it they are targeting $499. october 2020, rather than nov 2020, might be an educated guess that sony will want to get to market first. HZD and spiderman sequels are unlikely to release in the first year of PS5, and i think insomniac and guerrilla will release different projects before either of those, so showing these at a PS5 reveal seems like wishful thinking to me. whilst a new IP from naughty dog is likely after TLoU2, i'm sceptical they'd show it off this early.. though they did so with TLoU2 at PSX2016. surely godfall is a multiplatform release?

GT7 revealed at PS5 event for launch. will actually arrive in 2022.

Re: Dreams Sounds Like the Next PC-Bound PS4 Exclusive

leucocyte

well i absolutely f***ing detest windows 10, so PC gaming is not remotely an option for me, so sony making any moves in that direction is entirely undesirable as far as i'm concerned. if every big game, or sony first party, came out on a different o/s it might be different.. who knows, maybe PS5 is going to get some form of steam integration - it and steam o/s are both linux based, right? and gabe's not a windows 10 fan either.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Receives Hefty 5 Month Delay

leucocyte

i do begin to wonder how well these games will fare launching so close to the release of next-gen of consoles - i imagine by then, the launch price will be known and people might be in saving mode, or people might "wait for the inevitable PS5/XBsX version". quite a few high profile titles late in the PS3 life didn't sell anywhere near as well expected.

it's weird because most ardent gamers have been clamouring for backwards compatibility on next-gen systems so there's fewer ports and not having to buy the game again, now it's confirmed and it's often stated in comments "will wait for the PS5 version", even though it's never been announced as being in development for it.

Re: Dreams Sounds Like the Next PC-Bound PS4 Exclusive

leucocyte

@BarefootBowser - so does the software of 3rd parties from licensing fees. sony probably makes more money from call of duty or grand theft auto than it does from half of its own worldwide studios games. if people are going to play the first party games elsewhere, they're sure as hell not going to buy a console to play the 3rd party games on it.

Re: Dreams Sounds Like the Next PC-Bound PS4 Exclusive

leucocyte

@AdamNovice - because consoles generally offer a much better bang for buck on performance than PCs. to get the reported PS5 specs on PC, you'd be lucky to find it under £1000 - there's no way sony is going to price PS5 at that kind RRP. but i do agree your point, having exclusives is important to building a brand, and retaining loyalty to a brand. if sony playstation became a service amonst others on PC, i'd be out.

Re: PS4 Exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn Will Come to PC in 2020, Says Report

leucocyte

sony is not the publisher of detroit become human or death stranding on PC, nor are they developed by any of its own studios.. so it's not really clear that it's going to be the norm, and death stranding never had the "only on playstation" branding in the first place. i just can't see guerrilla games wasting time porting this to PC in a time when i imagine the pressure to get PS5 first party content ready as soon as possible is on. if the idea were to try and attract more people to buy a PS5 for the sequel, it could be counterproductive.

Re: Feature: 10 Under-the-Radar PS4 Games to Look Out for in 2020

leucocyte

not particularly interested in any of these. one of the "under the radar" games that showed a lot promise for me was Atomic Heart - the russian fps set in alternative USSR where robots have rebelled. there was a 10-minute gameplay demo released early last year. though there are reports (and denials) that the game has fallen into development hell... it was originally scheduled for late 2019, now it's just "TBD". it was being developed for PC and PS4, but it's supposedly being built with ray-tracing and dlss (you can download the rtx demo from their site) so perhaps a PS5 release is not out of the question.

Re: PlayStation 2019 Wrap-Up Gives You an Awesome Breakdown of Your PS4 Gaming Stats

leucocyte

yeah, mine's not right either. it shows 6 games, 49 hours, and 395 trophies. i think the number of games is correct, but it says powgi wordsearch is my most played game with 32 hours. considering i played this only on vita, and i platinumed it in about 3. killzone mercenary is second with 4hrs. i platinumed both modern warfare and jedi fallen order, and still haven't finished death stranding, all of which would have had more playtime than any of my "top 3".

Re: Sony and PlayStation Will Not Be at E3 2020

leucocyte

i would not be surprised if sony consoles end up on the "showfloor" with playable games. after all, they don't "attend" the eurogamer expo etc. but you can still play games on playstation there, and i'm sure there'll be PS5s at eurogamer. i think that's the destination E3 is headed.. a consumer-driven "hands-on" game show, where the industry's big names don't feel the need to withhold game reveals/announcements for one day of the year. when as soon as the next conference starts splurging all its details, your news falls off the first page of websites.

Re: Sony Suggests E3 2020 Is Not the Right Venue for PS5

leucocyte

good, so E3 can be easily ignored for me. i'm only interested in the sony conference anyway, and it was always on at 2am or something UK time, so i never watched it live anyway.

not sure E3 really does the industry that many favours to be honest, media has changed dramatically over the years. it's not like years ago where companies were able to keep games pretty much a secret and then have a big blow-out at E3. even if somebody did know a game was coming, it's not like it was widely distributed knowledge. these days, a rumour is followed by speculation, which is followed by a leak, followed by a corroboration, followed by an image, followed by an obscure store listing in uzbekistan or somewhere.. which has gone viral all over the interwebs, pretty much forcing a confirmation from publisher, that E3 becomes pretty anticlimatic.

Re: Soapbox: Sony Is Not Anti-Consumer for Making PS5 Exclusives

leucocyte

sony could possibly have held back the last of us 2 and/or ghost of tsushima for PS5 launch and released it as "cross-gen" exclusive. that fact it isn't can be seen as good sign.. being delivered on current gen as promised, and not needing to be held back to boost PS5 launch. i wouldn't rule out an upgrade patch later on for PS5 to boost resolution/framerate when played through backwards compatibility.

Re: There Will Be Exclusives You Can Only Play on PS5

leucocyte

demon souls remake, GT7, godfalll.. would be a hugely unappealing set of "only on PS5" launch games for me.. so i'd probably pass on day 1, as i don't think 3rd party cross-gen titles will be worth it. i hope sony has a few other rabbits in the hat. could be a perfect opportunity to launch a new FPS, given that there'll be no battlefield, and CoD is back with treyarch, so who knows if it'll have a campaign, given they haven't had much time since BlackOps4. now that hermann hulst is chief of WWS, hopefully there's more amenable opinion / encouragement for FPS franchises on PS5, even if it's just new KZ or resistance titles.

Re: Poll: What PS5 Box Design Should Sony Adopt?

leucocyte

i went for transparent, not really that fused on the other colours, except the blue one, and it looks pretty much the same as the PS4. i think they'll change the shape of the box - i suspect it'll look very similar to how 4K-UHD blu-ray boxes look in the UK, but still be blue. it's pretty striking when you walk into a videogame store and see the big blue banners for the playstation section, a branding recognition it just didn't have with the PS3 imo.

Re: Feature: Our Most Anticipated PS4 Games of 2020

leucocyte

dreams and last of us 2 are the only two i'm interested in at the minute.

the actual gameplay demonstrations of cyberpunk 2077 looked hugely underwhelming to me, and no matter how detailed everything else is, that's a problem i find difficult to overcome. I ditched the witcher 3 after about 8 hours or so because i couldn't take anymore of its naff clunky combat.

i'm hoping that ghost of tsushima is something more than an assassin's creed in a feudal japan skin. the ship has sailed on samurai's creed, imo. it does look pretty, i'll give it that.

Re: Rumour: PS5 Will Run PSone, PS2, PS3, and PS4 Games

leucocyte

@kyleforrester87 - for first party games, a lot of the cell's power was used - there was a type of job-scheduler implemented that off-loaded a lot of GPU tasks, physics, etc. to the SPEs, and the teams got better and better fully utilising it.. the difference between uncharted 1 and the last of us for example is substantial. the issue is not the "power of the cell", but the architecture of the cell. cell/risc and nvidia rsx to x86-64 AMD is not a minor change. could they get PS3 games to work? possibly, but given it was no straight-forward job to port games from PS3 to PS4 with the source code in hand, getting PS3 native binaries to run is a more difficult challenge. but there was that tweet from an nvidia gpu engineer the other day which showed the PS headquarters.. who knows, maybe sony have them on board for a hardware emulation of the old rsx gpu. i'm still very sceptical that PS5 will play games from your PS3 discs. it would be great if it does because i have way more PS3 games than PS4 ones, just can't see it. sony would prefer people subscribe to PS-Now.

Re: PS5 Will Be Huge, Says Daedalic Entertainment

leucocyte

allegedly much the early days of PS3 when sony went around asking developers what they'd like from a successor (hence the switch to x86-64 architecture, and 8Gb of fast (for the time) RAM on PS4), they did the same during the PS4 era, and the most requested feature wasn't more teraflops but "SSD/fast storage". a lot of the comments i've seen from developers seem to focus on how much of a gamer changer the ultra-fast storage of PS5 is compared to power, ray-tracing, or anything else.
