Re: Sony Earmarks $10 Million to Support Indie Developers Impacted by Coronavirus

mookysam

This is a wonderful goodwill gesture. The games industry (like almost every other sector of the economy) needs supporting right now. The economic damage caused by COVID-19 could well wipe out many of the smallest developers. Indies are a crucial component of modern gaming. The other platform holders really need to help this sector of the industry too.

Re: Poll: Do You Think Ghost of Tsushima Will Be Delayed Too?

mookysam

It's extremely likely. It's not just finishing development or even logistics or shops being shut, but the fact that a lot of people are strapped for cash right now which is immediately impacting the purchasing power of vast swathes of the market. The global economy will be wrecked by the time the coronavirus crisis is managed. I think game delays will also contribute to the new consoles being delayed. Not much point launching new hardware if there aren't enough games!

Re: Rumour: Resident Evil 8 Will Feature PSVR Support

mookysam

I heard it will be controlled with the Guitar Hero peripheral and zombies are defeated with the power of rock music! It remains to be seen if Singstar microphones will be supported, but as a zombie-of-sorts (RIP Singstar!) it could work on so many levels.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 319

Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is beautiful and wonderful. It's brilliant to see all the changes and additions to the plot. It's such a different experience to the original - which is used as a basic plot framework - that I may have to replay the PlayStation classic once I've completed this. I particularly love how the roles of Jessie, Biggs and Wedge have been fleshed out. The boss of Chapter 7 is kicking my arse!

Also playing Persona 4 Dancing All Night and finding it great to be back with the lovely P4 cast. Last but not least lots of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which continues to have me mesmerised! I can't go out so it's nice to experience the cheery, nature-filled world of Mooksville.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

mookysam

This is totes why I'm buying a PS5. It's undoubtedly Sony at their most ambitious, revolutionary and amazing. I actually wept with joy at the beauty of this thing and how worthwhile it will make playing PS5 games over anything the competition has to offer - in fact anything on any console before. I just won't be able to go back to the sad old PS4. Life itself is pointless without DualSense. This brings meaning to our very existences, and for Sony to accomplish such a thing with a contoller is nothing short of breathtaking. The subtle curves, the cute black analogue sticks that scream "touch me" or even the low hum of the haptic rumble. Never before has a console been so exciting. I don't care about God of War, Horizon or Spider-Man. All that matters is the controller!

Re: Soapbox: I Wish I Was Growing Up with Games Now

mookysam

Gaming has lost that excitement it once had and it no longer feels like games are breaking new ground or creating new genres. That's not to say there aren't brilliant titles - many are better than they've ever been - but I'm grateful for growing up in the '80's and '90's and experiencing gaming back then. Today's internet culture has ruined a lot of aspects. Kids today, eh.

Re: Soundtrack of the Decade: #9 - Persona 5's Brilliant Sense of Style Gave Way to Quite the Soundtrack

mookysam

Absolutely incredible soundtrack. I love how thematically cohesive it is. Plus it has the best boss theme. Ever. P4 certainly has great individual tracks but something about 5's overall clicks more with me. In terms of how it all slots into the game, it's a perfect marriage of visuals and music.

@gbanas92 Persona 3 is another outstanding musical effort from Atlus. I love how strange and otherworldly the Tartarus tracks are.

Re: Random Twitter Account Claims Sony Is About to Reveal a 'Major Studio Acquisition'

mookysam

I've probably not revealed this before, but in the interests of full disclosure, perhaps it's time. One of my sources is actually my Mum's dog. Anyway, at the park he happens to sniff the bum of a dog who belongs to a friend of a cousin of a cleaner who works at Sony. So, fluent that I am in dog (Jack Russell dialect) I was able to translate the following: "woof woof bark woof grr woof woof woofwoofwoof pant pant pant". It means "Sony is in the process of acquiring multiple studios including Take - wait, what's that? A Frisbee! Oh, no just a bit of loo roll - Two. Damn it, throw a frisbee! Ubisoft are also on - oh, now it's a pigeon, I hate those things, all they do is poo on me and fly off instead of playing - the cards. Top secret! Now give me a treat or I won't stop panting on you!"

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS4 RPG of 2019

mookysam

Kingdom Hearts III. A game that made me smile more than once and cry a few times too. It was never going to be easy tying together the myriad of plot threads, but Nomura just about pulled it off in the end. A great return to home consoles; gorgeous to look at and listen to, the best combat in series, fun worlds (for the most part) and I enjoyed the gummi sections too.

Re: Interview: Talking Trails Of Cold Steel 3 and Bringing More Games West with Falcom Boss Toshihiro Kondo

mookysam

Nice, thanks for the interview. Not yet played the Cold Steel series but I'm finally on the cusp of finishing Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, which will free me up to move onto them. What's really great is how they all take place in the same world, so I'm really excited to seeing things from the perspective of Erebonia. The world building is incredibly deep and really drew me in, despite the basic presentation.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 279

mookysam

Started Bloodstained Ritual of the Night on PS4. It's so much like Castlevania, which is awesome It's great that Michiru Yamane composed the music so it even sounds like Castlevania. Normally bad voice acting would drive me up the wall, but here it just fits.

@wiiware The second boss drove me up the wall. 😂 I finally beat him earlier.

Also started Day of the Tentacle Remastered on Vita as part of my ongoing quest to clear my extensive backlog, but keep going back to Smash Bros. instead.

Re: Talking Point: Should Sony Introduce a Game Pass Subscription of Its Own?

mookysam

Guess if the focus is on smaller titles or older games that have largely exhausted their market potential then yes. It's worth pointing out that most of what is on Game Pass is quite old and it includes a lot of Xbox 360 games. Is the value therefore a little hollow?

The big question is what's the benefit for Sony? Their big first party games have been massive successes and presumably made them a lot of money. They would stand to lose a lot if people didn't buy them normally. It works for service based titles that aim to keep players hooked for years, but this thankfully hasn't been Sony's focus.

Game Pass always seemed a way for Microsoft to deal with their massive loss of market share this generation. Moreover they haven't focused on single player story driven titles in some years. Big titles like Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break bombed, and they closed Lionhead and cancelled Scalebound. Since then they've pushed more service driven titles which feed into the subscription.

@Knuckles-Fajita Yeah it's getting a bit much. In the console-less future (cringe) we'll all be paying multiple subscriptions even if we only want to play one game from the publisher - and it's going to be ridiculous.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 274

mookysam

Got Uncharted: The Lost Legacy for my birthday so have been playing that all week and am now nearing the end. Chloe and Nadine are great leads and demonstrate that the series can work well without Nathan Drake as the protagonist. I like that there is less combat compared to its predecessors. It's also absolutely gorgeous.

Re: Talking Point: Should All Games Have an Easy Mode?

mookysam

Absolutely yes. I'm physically disabled and often struggle with complex button sequences or when a button needs hammering. It's painful and frustrating. Playing on easy is therefore sometimes a necessity - mostly for action titles - and enables me to enjoy a hobby I love doing. If normal and hard options are still available then why should the existence of an easy mode upset anyone?

A great example is when I played Nier Automata. I started on normal and struggled, so changed to easy which gave me access to an auto-dodge. I didn't apply the other "easy chips" to the androids because I didn't need them, but that auto-dodge radically improved the experience for me and made battles much more fun. The game is one of my favourites on the PS4 and I loved the story, but that experience would have been markedly different if I didn't have the accessibility options - if I'd finished the game at all.

Re: Sony's Digital Refund Policy Takes a Welcome Step Forward

mookysam

Reasonable step. Going forward I'd say there needs to be a balance when determining what length of time someone will be able to play a game before receiving a refund.

We could potentially see a situation where people request a lot of refunds simply because they don't like something, rather than because a game is broken or defective (like Fallout 76 for example). Would it then be reasonable for Sony to say "hey, you're abusing this"? Further, although refunds should always be given when a game is defective, if someone played a game for 20 hours and then requested a refund, it would be reasonable to refuse on the basis that the customer accepted the defect.

Re: Game of the Year 2018: Robert's Personal Picks

mookysam

Nice list! And another reminder that I really need to get into Yakuza!

Dragon Quest XI is brilliant and my personal GOTY. I particularly enjoyed the subtleties of the story in the vignettes, the wonderful main cast and the comfortable, unfussy battle system. The presentation is also delightful and I love the monster designs. My favourite character is Hendrik - his lines (and delivery) are hilarious!

Merry Christmas Sammy, Robert and all the writers, as well as every member of this wonderful community! Thanks for making this a great site to be part of. Hope everyone is having a lovely day!
