Re: Talking Point: Is It Time for Sony to Take PS4 Pro Seriously?

mookysam

Most of their sales are for the base PS4 and probably will be for the rest of the generation. The base PS4 probably has a higher profit margin too and it's the one they can ruthlessly price-cut in time for Christmas. It will be quite interesting to see how viable these mid-gen updates have been, as I think the Xbox One S will still sell more then the Scorpio. I'm not sure Sony have a whole lot to gain from heavily pushing the Pro at E3 specially when its USP can't be properly shown over an internet stream.

I agree with @rjejr the Pro and Scorpio are all well and good but if games have to run on the original Xbox One then they're self-limited. Microsoft can tout its 6TF marketing line til the cows come home but I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they find it is the exact same games but in 4k - and really not worlds apart from what the Pro does. These machines are for a very specific audience who want the best technology now and have 4k TVs, everyone else will wait a few years for when the PS5 is out.

Re: Persona 5 Is a Commercial Smash for Atlus

mookysam

Brilliant sales. Reassuring as this surely demonstrates the viability of the genre outside of Japan. Japan's console market is practically dead but if developers know they have a strong audience elsewhere they'll hopefully continue making these sorts of games.

Re: Why Is Persona 5 Streaming and Sharing Banned?

mookysam

The way some people have been complaining on other forums makes me think this is a bit of a storm in a teacup. It's actually nice for a company to go out of their way to protect against spoilers but I'm sure they'll enable the share features down the line. It's extremely easy for a game to be spoiled nowadays even when you're not looking (on Youtube homepages etc) and I don't want a game like this to be spoiled. On the PS4 itself I've gone down to "trending" from the game tab and inadvertently seen spoilers for quite a few games I didn't mean to.

I do like to take screenshots for myself when I see something funny but can just use my phone.

Re: Review: Yooka-Laylee (PS4)

mookysam

I agree it's odd that camera would be an issue in 2017 and perhaps points to this needing some more time in the oven? I was originally planning to get this at launch 'cause I enjoy this style of platformer warts and all, but there's no way I'll have Persona finished in a week. In a few months Yooka-Laylee will be half the price.

Re: No, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Questionable Animations Aren't Being Patched

mookysam

People seem concerned about the quality of the writing and the voice acting seems poor to me. Both are very important for a Mass Effect game as the story and character interactions have always been the best part. Alarm bells are certainly going off. It's not just the rubbish animations, either. The characters are unbelievably fugly. It seems worse than the original Mass Effect and that came out almost ten years ago! This will not be a day one purchase, but I'll wait and see what other people think and may buy it when it's fully patched and half the price.

Re: Final Fantasy XV's Story Was Purposefully Left Incomplete

mookysam

The story certainly had its flaws. It felt like there was a lot missing and events just "happened" (Ravus, the Emperor, Prompto etc etc). Kingsglaive is practically required viewing to get a handle on the background of the game. I didn't care enough for Lunafreya because she wasn't in it enough for me to get particularly attached. The ending on the other hand was stunning and one of the things that I really liked about the game. It was extremely well done.

Re: Talking Point: Could 2017 Be Gaming's Greatest Ever Year?

mookysam

It's weird I was thinking this just this morning. There have already been so many great games released and we're not even halfway through March. This generation has taken a long time to feel like it's getting going but we're finally at that point. Will it beat out 2007? Maybe, though I imagine things will slow down significantly in the second half of the year. Sony may surprise us all and release God of War in the Autumn, but there seems to be an increasing habit of them releasing tentpole releases in Q1.

I'm still not too fussed about Mass Effect (despite loving the original trilogy) but Persona 5 is something I'm enormously looking forward to. I doubt Yooka-Laylee or Dragon Quest Heroes II will be critical darlings but I'm really excited to play them as well.

Re: Review: Danganronpa 1&2 Reload (PS4)

mookysam

I forgot this was coming out. I doubt I would rebuy as I don't know if I would like it as much on the TV, but for those who don't have a Vita I very strongly recommend it. They're brilliant games - especially the second one!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 156

mookysam

Lots of Zelda! Today I've mainly just been exploring, discovering forest critters (koroks) and inadvertently dying a lot. The game doesn't hold your hand and there is a lot to get to grips with. A big change for the series, but I'm enjoying it so far - apart from one really annoying shrine I encountered atop a mountain. There was a freaky bit involving the moon which was quite scary!

Tomorrow I'll probably get Dragon Quest Builders finished so I can get back into Pokemon Moon.

Re: Poll: Will Your PS4 Gather Dust Now the Nintendo Switch Is Out?

mookysam

I'm currently enjoying Breath of the Wild on my Wii U and don't have any plans to get a Switch until its library fills out. I might get one at Christmas once Mario Odyssey is released. Most of the games I'm looking forward to are coming out on the PS4 so I don't see the amount of use I get out of it declining!

Re: Talking Point: Should PlayStation Be Paying Attention to Xbox Game Pass?

mookysam

It sounds great at first glance, and I think makes good PR at a time when the Xbox brand is struggling, but I'm not sure the value is really there considering how old most of the games are. Looking at the picture, I have played many of them and still own them on disc. It is essentially an extension of the Games With Gold service, but costs considerably more. I would rather spend the money on new games!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 156

mookysam

Still playing Tales of Symphonia HD but nearing the final stretch. I really want to finish it in time for Zelda! If I can finish it this week I might start a new game but can't choose between Uncharted 4 or Dishonored - the latter of which I'd already played on the 360. Hmm.

On the handheld front, I'm continuing with Dragon Quest Builders. The cockney bodybuilders of Kol are quite funny.

Re: Talking Point: Are 'Live Games' Really What You Want on PS4?

mookysam

I'm not a huge fan of the model if it means we end up with less choice than before. Gaming feels like it's becoming more sterile and by the numbers and has lost some of its purity. More and more games feel like they're designed by boardroom committees I know this is largely down to ballooning budgets and publishers are having to find more creative ways of making money but do all games really have to cost so much to make? I feel that this stagnation among many western developed games is part of the reason why there is renewed interest in Japanese games.

I can't help but feel Ubisoft's tactic will in the long term just shoot them in the foot. Last gen many publishers shoehorned multiplayer into their games to attract more consumers and keep them playing, but I think this tactic failed because people tended to still only buy the same multiplayer games each year - namely Call of Duty. I think the same will hold true if more games becomes service based - consumers will still only play a few long-term. Ubisoft may even find they end up with their own games competing with each other for gamers' time. Not every game can be a Destiny or Overwatch. I don't think the prospect of continued support and a stream of content will necessarily attract more people than would have originally bought a game anyway.

Gaming for me is largely solitary, with occasional split screen multiplayer. The social aspect is centred on talking about games rather than playing them with other people. I don't have PS+ and haven't renewed my Xbox Live subscription for years. I've always enjoyed single player games and a variety of genres. The success of single player only titles like Skyrim suggests that there is still a market for these types of games.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 154

mookysam

I've been playing Tales of Symphonia HD. I haven't played it since the original came out on the GameCube so it is nice to go back to. I'm enjoying it but certain elements have aged a bit. The battle system in particular has been greatly improved in future instalments.

I've also recently got back into Dragon Quest Builders on the Vita after being sidetracked for the past few months. It's stupendously good! I love the script which is full of the usual Dragon Quest flair and gathering materials to build up my towns is addictive and fun.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 152

mookysam

I finally finished Final Fantasy XV earlier. I only need to defeat the adamantoise and get the flying car for the platinum but I might leave that for a bit. I enjoyed the game a lot - especially the battle system and exploring. Some of the boss battles are great spectacles. My only real criticism is that the story seems a bit patched together and certain things "just happen" with not enough explanation.

I might start Uncharted 4 tomorrow. I have a lot of games from Christmas still to play.

Re: Feature: What Do You Mean You've Never Played... Dragon Quest VIII?

mookysam

I bought this with my PS2. It's one of my favourite games of all time and a superb RPG. The world was so beautiful and fun to explore that I'd always play a bit more just to see what was round the corner. I think the orchestral score is the finest Dragon Quest music to date and was a lovely touch for the western release alongside the voice acting. It really adds to the sense of scale and adventure. The lovely cel-shaded visuals really bringing Akira Toriyama's character and monster designs to life. The game as a whole is very charming.

Re: Talking Point: Should Sony Move Horizon: Zero Dawn's PS4 Launch Away from the Nintendo Switch?

mookysam

Sony should release Horizon on time precisely because the Switch is launching. It's an opportunity to distract people from the Switch with a rather graphically impressive and massively hyped game and show just what the console can do compared to the competition. For non-PS4 owners who are on the fence it's an opportunity to draw them in - particularly enticing given how much cheaper the PS4 is than the Switch. Switch may have mindshare, but Sony won't want to allow Nintendo to dominate it.

People that have been really looking forward to Horizon will buy it anyway, Switch or no, and the PS4's audience is sufficiently large that I think it will weather this one. Even if launch sales are impacted, the title may be a slow burn throughout the year.

Re: Poll: Who Is the Best Final Fantasy Protagonist?

mookysam

I've liked them all. My vote goes to the warrior goddess Lightning. I thinks she's a great character and very physically strong. People think she's cold but given her burden I think it is understandable and she did grow a lot as a character over the course of the game. I liked her in the sequels too.

I would've picked Celes from VI if she was an option because I view her as the true protagonist of the game. XII is a bit of an odd one given that you start as Vaan but I found myself actually occupying Balthier but could have easily "been" Basch or Ashe or any of the others (apart from Penelo haha). It didn't really matter.

Re: Feature: What Do Longtime Final Fantasy Fans Think of Final Fantasy XV?

mookysam

I've really enjoyed all the Final Fantasy games I've played, and my favourites are X, VI, XII VII and IV - all of which I'd rank among the best games I've ever played.

I haven't played as much of XV as I'd like but I've really enjoyed what I have played so far. The battle system is fun and has a lot more depth to it than I initially thought now I've got to grips with it! The world is beautiful and a joy to explore, Yoko Shimomura's score is lovely and the lead characters are likeable. I didn't like the Duscae demo and wasn't terribly excited for a long time but I think Square-Enix have done a really good job here.
