@HonestHick That’s an incredibly naive take. Bad games do well in the same way that good games fail, what captures the zeitgeist is absolutely no indication of quality. By that logic, Candy Crush is a superior game to Shadow of the Colossus.
@Antbaze97 …why? People are losing their jobs. It’s a remarkably inoffensive game in every sense, the original concept was binned in favour of a fairly fun take on a crossover hero shooter, I don’t see anything in the final product to be that incensed over.
This is a shame. The project was a laughing stock at first but it launched to genuinely solid gameplay, just didn’t receive the content in time to consolidate. And now Black Ops 6 has annihilated any space in the market. A lot of people losing their jobs too, right before Christmas.
@Lastochka Degenerate is a very strong word that you’ll need to elaborate on given its use by the Nazis to tar certain groups. Bluesky is cringe but you’re verging on the obscene with a label like that.
Under cozy laws this cannot be a cozy game. Cozy games you can curl up with on the sofa and lose yourself in, without worrying about multiple currencies, battle passes, limited time events and the like. This is manufactured content designed to generate revenue, which cannot be cozy.
@MrPeanutbutterz Horizon was one of the main ones I was thinking about, I did every single question mark on the map like I normally do in these sorts of games because that’s what I consider as ‘finishing’ a game like that. So the platinum coming at the end of that grind (along with the inane trophies you mentioned) feels like a reward for having seen what that game offers. The other main one I was thinking of was Far Cry. I got the platinum in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry Primal, which felt like such a natural ‘done’ moment given how living and breathing those worlds are. However, Far Cry 4 and 5 introducing multiplayer trophies I have no interest in meant that I didn’t get that moment that made me feel done with the game, which did sting a bit as I enjoyed my time and still cleared the map but have ‘undone’ parts of the game that I have no interest in completing. So it’s a balance personally, between rewarding you for exploring the game and not ever feeling like you’re undercutting the player’s experience as they chase trophies to the expense of them actually sitting down and engaging with the game normally.
Wait I looked it up and Juice WRLD is indeed dead. What the f**k? So we’re having virtual concerts of dead people now? Is that not incredibly dystopian?
@MrPeanutbutterz I like trophies for the sole reason that it gives bloated open world games with no natural conclusion something to aim for. If I get the platinum in a game by engaging with all its systems and exploring everything it has to offer then that’s a good thing. If it has difficult trophies then maybe I’ll go for one or two but it’s not a big deal. The compulsion to trophy hunt just feels like you’ve turned games into a job rather than something fun, it’s the viewing of games as content rather than media.
@MrPeanutbutterz …I thought trophies requiring effort was a good thing? At least they were originally supposed to, dunno why anyone would want more brainless trophy lists unless they really just seek the minuscule serotonin hit. Tbh, it’s part of why I love RetroAchievements, I’ve mastered very very few games’ lists because they range from ‘complete the game’ to the most insane challenges I’ve ever seen. And that’s ok, it’s part of the fun.
I love that it’s compared to Getting Over It in the article offhandedly considering that the games are literally made by the same person. Bennett Foddy is a legend. Working with Gabe again is cool, I loved Ape Out.
@breakneck If a game’s development is funded by a billion dollar company then it’s clearly not an indie game. The difference in risk for developers is gargantuan. I have no idea how self-funded devs do it.
@breakneck None of the studios you’ve named are indie devs. None of the games produced by those devs are indie games. I’d love to see them even try to pretend to be indie devs in the presence of Localthunk, ConcernedApe or Poncle.
It would be nice to have exclusives to take advantage of portable play but any potential device would more likely be essentially a PS4/5 portable. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I’d definitely love more pick up and play games, a bit of a dying art with mobile games being rife with MTX and console games requiring a larger commitment.
Super super excited for this. Looks to be its own thing which is a great sign. But the PS stans will hate on it regardless. If it was just Uncharted then it would be a clone, but now it’s a bad thing that it’s first person, despite MachineGames proving they can do FPS games really well. I’ve played the Emperor’s Tomb and the Staff of Kings, them copying existing tropey gameplay and sticking Indy in them doesn’t end well.
@breakneck Bit rich to say Ben Starr has zero range when he’s had far more notable live action acting breakthroughs than Troy Baker. Voice acting is an artform but Ben Starr is a more well-rounded actor outside of just voice acting and that’s plain fact.
Probably a TV show that’ll end up being rubbish. They’ll either inexplicably start at the Viking games or it’ll be a whole season of pre-Ghost of Sparta for him to ‘earn’ the ashen skin.
I’ve played a few Lego games on PC but it’s not my platform of choice for them. Still, we shouldn’t bother questioning why it’s being ported as there’s literally no reason not to. If it’s on Switch then they’re fine with it being multiplat and at least if it’s on PC then it’s easily preserved for the future.

I’m not even old and this makes me feel old. I also thought Juice WRLD was dead, probably confusing him with someone else.

Re: Astro Bot Blasts Past Elden Ring, Currently 2024's Highest-Rated Release
