Re: 80s Synthpop Stars Heaven 17 Resist the Temptation of PS5's GTA 6

@Atreus97 A reasonable solution is royalties. Literally just royalties. They’re designed that way for a reason, the more copies sold, the more money goes out to artists. It’s their only way to have any financial security later in life. Streaming is already killing this, now we have chancers like Rockstar conning musicians.

Love Martyn, his voice is super important and he always tries to stand up for artists. The problem with this is that Heaven 17 don’t need exposure from a video game, they’re an 80s band with a large audience and so the only benefit they can get from this sort of deal is a monetary one - especially when royalties are entirely under threat. I sat down with my uncle when he got his royalties letter in a few years back and it’s dealing in fractions of pennies from Spotify plays, radio plays are still worth so much more. Temptation is a huge song but from what I gather, Martyn is more saying that all of the artists deserve at least royalties considering the obvious billions this game will make. The games would not be what they are without the soundtracks after all.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Star Wars Outlaws?

@VenomUK You think that one user joining a gaming site to defend a Star Wars game is part of a larger conspiracy? I mean, let’s be reasonable here, who’s funding this? Why wouldn’t they target a larger site like IGN or Eurogamer? Why would they only create one account for this purpose? Who’s handing out the orders? Occam’s Razor, it’s one person who liked the game, lurks a bit and felt that the game was getting a bad rap and so created an account to defend it.

@VeldinX Indiana Jones 2 is terrible but the first does deserve a remaster. I played the whole series through PS Plus streaming for the platinums and it’s only Lord of the Rings missing so I’d love a remaster of that, it would seriously benefit from a frame rate increase and especially draw distance as the world is pretty beautiful for a Lego game.

@Lavishturtle Fairly certain that France’s labour laws prevent Nacon from sacking the workers within at least the first 12 weeks of industrial action. I’d imagine that shutting the studio and making them redundant would fall under the same realm, if it can be proven in the courts that Nacon weren’t under massive financial pressure to do so. If they can only shut the studio either after taking a massive hit for 12 weeks or after a deal is struck, then I’d like to think that getting round the table will be their priority, especially with Greedfall 2 in active development.

Re: Kratos Actor Chris Judge Claps Back at Amazon Exec's Gaming Dig

@Digit2021 @Lavishturtle Two examples of opposite opinions that are both harming perceptions of these actors. It’s factually true that acting in video games has not yet reached a point of parity with movies and TV shows due to even modern mocap not capturing the full range of human emotion and subtlety that you’ll see on screen. Any attempt to claim that performances in video games are of a higher quality than what you’d get in a movie or TV show is fairly nonsensical.

At the same time, downplaying the acting as being B grade undersells the work they do put in. The industry is maturing faster and faster every year and voice work specifically is fantastic especially in games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Final Fantasy XVI and Disco Elysium, which all treat their script and cast with the respect they deserve. Pointing to Star Wars Outlaws is egregious considering that trailers have shown performances to be just as talented as 99% of Star Wars acting, while there are games with far more amateurish performances due to a much smaller budget or one of a million other factors.

In reality, performances differ across projects exactly like movies and TV shows but I’d argue that we’ve still yet to see the ceiling of full-body mocap performances in this medium, and that won’t change until actors, and writers, are given the same freedom, support and room for growth that the visual arts have been cultivating for over 100 years.

Re: Kratos Actor Chris Judge Claps Back at Amazon Exec's Gaming Dig

The issue is that there’s actors pouring their soul into these games and the industry doesn’t treat them with the respect that they deserve. Read a BBC article a week or so ago about the way that mocap actors on games are being pushed into increasingly horrible scenes like rape, except with far, far less protections and professionalism in place that you’d get on a film or TV set. This guy’s a moron but it’s less that we should just say he’s wrong and move on and more that we should see that his attitude is fairly commonplace and that there’s a lot of work to be done.
