It's baffling that there are some people here refusing to play the game because it doesn't have a PS5 version, or because Double Fine are now owned by Microsoft. I'm a fan of video games. I love gaming. I have and always will enjoy playing a good game. Seems some people are a bigger fan of Sony the company itself than they are their actual hobby....
Hmmmm with the direction PS is going in, I can't help but feel this may simply be a way to tie in new PS5 games with Netflix Series and Movies from the Sony Pictures side of things. The Last of Us Remastered Remastered Again launching alongside the TV series for example....
After a quick read of the headline, I thought for a second the Tecmo beat m up series was going to have a special edition with Peter Weller on the new consoles
@LiamCroft it's massively off topic but have you changed your avatar due to the Sammy E3 bet thing?! Either way an absolutely fantastic article. The best I've read on the site this year. Very good one!
Without wanting to sound like a grumpy old man, do developers make games for actual video game players these days or silly YouTube streamers and influencers?!?? All the "upload and capture" buttons on the new consoles. It's just silly in my rather old fashioned view.
At least the loading should be much quicker after dying on the newer consoles. What frustrates me in these games is just how long it takes to get back to the point of failure. Challenging, hard, punishing gameplay is one thing. Long load times, checkpoints spaced far apart (or not before a boss but with minions and then the boss) and the typical From camera issues does put me off these games somewhat.
@nessisonett I agree. If Sony had turned up the article would be about how Sony were the saviours of E3. The trouble is for this site is because of Sony's absence the editors and writers are focusing on the typically lackluster events of Ubisoft, EA etc... Rather than being able to see the larger scope like Xbox, Nintendo, Indie showcases and the like.
You guys really all need to read Aesop's Fable about the Sour Grapes...
Microsoft + Bethesda, Nintendo, Devolver Digital, Limited Run Games all had very decent showcases. The usual Ubisoft, EA ones were boring but there were a genuine ton of new game announcements that were unexpected and look to be genuinely fun. I realise perhaps from a PS centric website it could have been better for Sony fans but to suggest the E3 event this year wasn't any good is pure fanboyism. This year was a lot better than last year's for comparison.
@playstation1995 Salt and Sanctuary is one of the most under rated PS4 exclusives in my view. Absolutely phenomenal game! Also can't wait for Salt and Sacrifice, that was such a surprise announcement.
Very very surprised to see the scores for the Square Enix panel get lower scores than the Microsoft/Bethesda panel. With the SE focus on third person cinematic games I'd have thought it'd have catered a lot more to the Sony crowd than it appears. Good to be proven wrong.
As someone who is a multiplatform gamer I have to love the hypocrisy on show in the comments. Openly mocking more of Forza and Halo whilst citing Ratchet and Clank and God of War as counter examples 😂
Its worth mentioning that Insomniac Games regularly places in the top 100 places to work. That's not just video games, but work every in general. It goes to show that crunch really is simply a case of poor and lazy management within the gaming industry and entirely unnecessary. For my money, Insomniac Games is the jewel in Sony's crown, not Naughty Dog.
This is about as surprising as the news that Oddworld: Soulstorm is releasing on Xbox soon.
So many timed exclusives this gen that this is going to be a constant back and forth between the two companies.
Those with patience win in the end, as they'll all end up on both consoles anyway (true 1st party exclusives excluded of course)
As others have said, the scarcity of PS5's or at least increased challenge of obtaining one means that as quick as the PS5 sells, they'd always have sold even more if it wasn't for the scalping, parts shortages. Will be interesting to know if they were always intended for PS4 a la Miles Morales, or whether this is a mid development decision due to the PS5 situation.
The whole package just feels like a love letter to original fans. I'd give it 10/10. What was done to Mass Effect 1 really is above and beyond, all three games with all content improved... Definitely 10/10 in every sense of the word from me.
Real shame. Recently got into the manga with the excellent deluxe hardcovers Dark Horse reissued and it's absolutely amazing. He left his mark behind and will be remembered well
Ghostrunner was amazing. Great soundtrack, hard difficulty with quick respawns making it feel fair at all times, very cool setting... One of my favourite games of last year. Sequel news is excellent!
@Hopewell Nope. I have actually turned off trophy notifications for my PS as well. I just find it amusing that getting a platinum trophy is a "big deal" for some people, when it doesn't even require one to fully complete the game. Just reinforces my original belief that people should play games however they want and ignore trophies altogether. It's the idea that this secondary system has some idea of "gaming worth" when it's plain to see it's an utterly inconsistent system that makes me chuckle.
A PS5 platinum trophy. Seems to be worth as much as a bronze PS3 trophy. Why not just give you the platinum trophy upon purchasing the game, then people don't have to play it even once?!
Was only a matter of time before the superb Activision remakes of the last few years were shown to be a fluke rather than a change in direction. Appalling, bad for gamers, bad for the developers and a big negative mark on the stinky AAAA market gaming is turning out to be more and more. (On a postive note, Thank god for Sony taking what seems like a genuine risk with Returnal lately)
Still yet to pick up a PS5 or Series X due to these issues. It's at the point where come the end of this summer I'll be so fed up I'll take whatever one I can get ahold of first and wait a couple more years for the other.
A fantastically well written guide. Completely agree with all of it. Should a friend ever ask me about getting into resident evil, I'll save myself the conversational trouble and just link to them to this guide. It's not often I agree with every single placement of a game on a ranked list.
They probably saw the large sales influx of people buying games while they could, saw the revenue stream and then changed their minds. This is purely a financial decision (albeit one that benefits us gamers at least) Means voting with your wallet really does work.
A shame the games can't be directly installed onto the hard drive and have to be moved. Have to say both PS and Xbox seem to have gone backwards this gen with external storage options. PS4 and XB1 are miles better with being able to play games off the expanded storage. I know it's the SSDs holding it back but it's never good to essentially "lose" features on new consoles.
Unlike Films, Video Games are a rare medium in which sequels very often tend to be better and improve upon the original.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Days Gone but it was certainly very fun and a game where a sequel is almost necessary in order to further the ideas and gameplay it provided.
A real shame. Hopefully it's not too late for someone within Sony to convince the big-wigs that a sequel really should get the green light.
I think I can officially state that Sony no longer is attempting to cater to the niche hardcore gamer crowd. TV shows, Mobile gaming, remakes, no classic PS heritage appreciation...! At this state I just simply can't reward Sony for the direction they're going in with extra sales. Just a drop in the ocean and sure Jim Ryan doesn't care about one lost sale, but this is Xbox One levels of awfulness.
For all the people saying "why not?!", Because I'd prefer a new and interesting different game to get the funding and development. It's not the remake that's the problem, but the other game that will never end up being made as a result of this one.
Put Mark Cerny in charge. He's a proper gamer and actively plays games in the business that he's working in. It becomes painfully obvious when games companies are run by people who don't play games. Jim Ryan and Sony is an unfortunate example of this....
It's interesting how Oddworld has come back to PlayStation as it's new home. With Soulstorm being exclusive for now, and New N Tasty also launching first on the PS4.
Wasn't too long ago that it was Munch's Oddysey as an Xbox launch title and Strangers Wrath being exclusive to Xbox as well (that's the one worth playing of the two)
It's the PS1 classics I'm going to miss. Some of the physical copies of the PS1 classics go for well over £100+. Being able to pay £7ish for them has been brilliant and allowed me to play games like Ark the Lad Tomba, Klonoa etc... That I missed out for whatever reason first time around. Just porting these games over to the PS4/5 would instantly erase all fears and irritation on the subject and allow me to continue to give Sony lots of my money!
Sucks but being able to redownload purchased titles is a good move at least. Honestly, this could have been a lot worse. It's not a great move from Sony, and I'm not supporting it, but this is no worse than Nintendo did on the Wii and for that I guess we should be "relatively" relieved.
@deathaxe Sucks that Zen were bought, that explains the greed. As for a Pinball Museum, there's one in Berlin. It's called the Flipperhalle and it has over 50 tables. Most of the classics and it's just a £10 entry and all tables are on free play. Can't recommend it enough!
Seems fair. Surprised that Hades also won performer in a supporting role and narrative however...
It won't be a popular opinion here but I'm glad that the Bafta's have given Hades a larger nod. Last of Us Part 2 is a remarkable achievement, but I still don't believe that Video Games imitating Film/TV is the pinnacle of the video game medium and I'm glad Bafta agrees.
(I'm also super super happy to see Sackboy getting some double award love!!)
Considering the last Gen upgrade carried over the tables for free with the new game engine this is disappointing... Perhaps go the Wii U Virtual Console route and offer a large discount for those rebuying tables they've had before, to separate them from outright new purchasers. Like an upgrade payment option....
Whilst this is a very unlikely scenario, I have to give credit to the story in order to put pressure on Sony to do something about game preservation. Social Media clickbait or not, the issue for me is that Sony aren't taking the issue of game preservation seriously, and if this silly news keeps the pressure up on them in any way then I'm all for it.
Going the same way as the Wii virtual console. Would be nice if one could redownload purchased titles but I sadly don't expect to be able too. Time to back up and download all those PS3 games then... The timing if true of a July deadline is however appalling. Seems all I do is criticise Sony lately but I can hardly support them when they pull stuff like this. (Not the country, sure plenty of Aussies are well and truly fed up of all this censorship)
I still think their first ever game, The Nomad Soul, was their greatest. The switch to narrative at the expense of gameplay from Fahrenheit onwards has been good, but never as gripping. Also, David Bowie never cameos (and sadly never can now) in any more of their games.
