One of those games I've always wanted to play, but never got around to getting it for my PS2. Will definitely give it a go.
A question, though: how open-ended are the stages? Are we talking Banjo Kazooie/DK64 stuff, with each stage being an open world filled with collectibles/stuff to do, or is it more like Mario Galaxy, with structured missions?
I'm surprised this isn't number one. It's an incredibly fun and well-done RPG. It's #2 on my overall list, behind only Splatoon. The graphics are incredible (probably the best I've ever seen as far as realism goes), the crafting system is fantastic, the combat has just the right amount of depth. I do own Bloodborne, and I don't think it can beat The Witcher 3 in a million years.
That all said, let me just throw my pet peeve out there: the story is really nothing to write home about. It's filled with typical fantasy clichés and dei-ex-machina which, together with the absolutely disproportionate power given to sorceresses, make it hard to take seriously. When it comes to gameplay, though,I stand by my opinion that I haven't played a single PS4 game that can touch it.
Good old corporate talk. I doubt he would ever admit they didn't end on a high note - although I honestly wish CEOs in general would be less slippery about owning up to their mistakes.
This is better, but still annoying. I'd much rather get the entire thing at once than have to wait for Final Fantasy VII-2 and subsequent ridiculously-named sequels.
To be honest, I don't think any game needs a CG trailer. I certainly have never been sold on a game because of one, and generally don't even bother watching.
@rjejr I'm definitely very hyped about XCX. I don't mind a cool story in my games; what I don't like much is games that are entirely built around a story, in a way that is, in my opinion, to the detriment of gameplay. For example, I've tried to finish The Last of Us on a friend's PS3 last year, and then again on my PS4 this year, and I just couldn't slog through it. For that reason, I'm not really thinking I'll be getting Uncharted 4, at least not until I can find it for dirt cheap.
As for open world games, well, I usually love them, but mainly when they're fantasy-based (such as The Witcher 3 or Skyrim) or when they're JRPGs (such as Xenoblade or Dragon Quest). What I'm kinda burned out on is those super Western modern city settings, such as GTA or Just Cause... their overall feel just doesn't seem to appeal to me as much.
It's all about the JRPGs for me. I'm honestly kinda burned out on western open world titles, and I'm 100% not a fan of storyline-driven linear stuff.
My most anticipated title I'll be getting for PS4 is certainly Final Fantasy XV. However, Yooka-Laylee, which I backed for a Wii U version, remains my #1 game overall for next year. I miss those open-ended, mascot-based 3D platformers so much.
May this continue to be the case when it comes to the inevitable Elder Scrolls VI. I played Skyrim on PC, but I'd really rather play those massive open world titles on a console.
I remember playing this on my PC back in the day. I loved the 2.5D schtick, and had tons of fun. I wonder if it would hold up okay if I were to replay it nowadays.
You know what the funny part is? The article talks about 39 million Xbox Live users active as of last month, which seemed like too big a number for me (given that I imagine the majority of 360 users have moved on at this point)... and then it dawned on me that users of Microsoft games on PC and Windows Phone actually count towards that number, which only adds to the muddiness of the actual statistic.
Man, Konami is trying super hard to just stick fingers on their ears and go LALALALALALALALALA while ignoring the obvious. Worse yet, they expect everyone to do the same.
The NES is not quite my favorite console of all time (that honor goes to the SNES), but it was the first one I ever played and the first one I ever owned, and as such it'll always be unforgettable for me.
Is this game available on PS4 in any way? I'd totally give it a try. I really do miss those open-ended 3D platformers. Good think Yooka Laylee is coming.
I'm still not really sure how much exploration there is in this game, and that's what will make or break it for me. Exploration is one of the joys of Dragon Quest for me.
I'm absolutely not a Transformers fan, meaning I don't really have interest in this, but I gotta say those cartoon graphics are amazing. I wish more AAA devs would go for stylized graphics these days rather than the same photo-realistic vibe.
@JaxonH At the risk of going off-topic, it's remarkable how much our gaming trajectories look alike in our adult lives. I was a huge gaming enthusiast as a kid, owned a NES, a Sega Master System and subsequently a SNES. But then I got my first computer and all but forgot about console gaming for a long time. I had a PS2 (because frankly, who didn't), but I wouldn't get back to gaming in a big way until I got a very late-generation DS. I followed that up with a 3DS, Wii U, and PS4, and now you could say console gaming has become my #1 hobby once again.
On topic... I was never really fond of Digimon. I always enjoyed Pokemon games (and watched the anime for a while, although I was never really a fan of that), and for me Digimon always sounded like a bad ripoff. I'm curious to see whether this game can change my mind and entice me into getting it.
@JaxonH I didn't play Hyrule Warriors, as a matter of fact! Zelda is also one of my favorite franchises, so the decision on whether to get DQH or not ia gonna be Hyrule Warriors all over again for me (except this time I have a significantly larger backlog, making the odds I bite somewhat lower... damn you, real life commitments!).
I'm still on the fence. I'm usually all over anything Dragon Quest, butI'm really not interested in Musou style games. Guess I'll give it a go at some point.
@Dodoo Oh, sorry about that. I mistook your genuine words for sarcasm, heh. I guess that's what the internet does: I'm often asauming people are being hostile instead of friendly. My bad!
@Dodoo Oh yeah, I'll take smart and challenging platforming over generic space shooting any day. But hey, that's me. You don't need to feel offended that not everyone shares your opinion when it comes to video games (I know, shocking).
@get2sammyb I feel exactly the same way. It reminds me of how I switch from loving Bethesda when an Elder Scrolls game comes out to just not caring when it's time for a new Fallout.
To be honest, I'm not really that interested in the social features of my PS4, and I also don't play online multiplayer (no PS+ and no general interest), so the changes don't really affect me. Sucks that they still can't get their stuff together though.
Great article. I went from being a diehard console enthusiast during the 8 and 16 bit eras to being almost exclusively a PC gamer during that generation, mainly because I thought those new polygon-heavy 3D games just had nothing on my SNES sprite-based classics (an opinion I hold to this day, and which helps make the SNES my favorite console of all time), so it's exciting to read reports such as this one and see history in the making with the power of hindsight.
I did come around eventually, learning to enjoy many PSOne and N64 classics in the process, but that remains the one generation I skipped entirely since I first got my NES and Master System.
I've never been a fan of the series... I'll probably bite with Uncharted 4, but this is gonna be a pass. I got lots of backlog to go through with my PS4 as it is, plus Mario Maker and Splatoon on Wii U still taking lots of my free time.
I mean, that old model is definitely worse, but I can't really say I enjoy the design they ended up using. He's just a douchy-looking guy with no memorable physical trait whatsoever.

Re: PS5 Could Launch as Early as 2019, Reckons Analyst
Wait, Pachter said it? It's confirmed, then: not gonna happen.
@Mattym92 Aren't PS4s sold at a loss, though? If so, it's all about software sales to make Sony a profit, not hardware.
Re: PS4 Owners Have Terribad Music Taste
Vengaboys and B*Witched? Sorry, guys, yours is quite worse.

Re: Point Your Pickaxes at an Hour of Dragon Quest Builders PS4 Gameplay
This looks like the game to finally pull me into the Minecraft fad. It also reminds me of Fantasy Life, a 3DS game that I simply adored last year.
Re: Feast Your Eyes on The Witcher 3's Final Expansion with These First Screenshots
That looks stunning. Not sure if I'll bite, as I don't generally bother with DLC for campaign-based games, but man it is pretty.

Re: Pachter: There's Nothing Xbox One Can Do to Catch PS4
Here's the only way Pachter ever gets stuff right: by stating the obvious.
Re: Uh-Oh! Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Be Episodic on PS4
If they eventually release the whole thing in one single package, I'm game. Otherwise, get out of here.
Re: Talking Point: Did PlayStation Experience 2015 Meet Your Expectations?
It wasn't bad, but there was way too much VR stuff that don't interest me in the slightest.
The one surprise that truly got me was Ni No Kuni II.
Re: Oi Square, Where's Our Final Fantasy XV PS4 Controller?
To be honest, I've always been curious how many copies FF games even sell on Xbox compared to other platforms. It just doesn't seem to fit at all.
