Re: PS2 Platformer Psychonauts Levitates onto PS4 This Spring

One of those games I've always wanted to play, but never got around to getting it for my PS2. Will definitely give it a go.

A question, though: how open-ended are the stages? Are we talking Banjo Kazooie/DK64 stuff, with each stage being an open world filled with collectibles/stuff to do, or is it more like Mario Galaxy, with structured missions?

Re: Game of the Year: #3 - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4)

I'm surprised this isn't number one. It's an incredibly fun and well-done RPG. It's #2 on my overall list, behind only Splatoon. The graphics are incredible (probably the best I've ever seen as far as realism goes), the crafting system is fantastic, the combat has just the right amount of depth. I do own Bloodborne, and I don't think it can beat The Witcher 3 in a million years.

That all said, let me just throw my pet peeve out there: the story is really nothing to write home about. It's filled with typical fantasy clichés and dei-ex-machina which, together with the absolutely disproportionate power given to sorceresses, make it hard to take seriously. When it comes to gameplay, though,I stand by my opinion that I haven't played a single PS4 game that can touch it.

Re: Feature: 25 Games That Will Make PS4's 2016 Insane

@rjejr I'm definitely very hyped about XCX. I don't mind a cool story in my games; what I don't like much is games that are entirely built around a story, in a way that is, in my opinion, to the detriment of gameplay. For example, I've tried to finish The Last of Us on a friend's PS3 last year, and then again on my PS4 this year, and I just couldn't slog through it. For that reason, I'm not really thinking I'll be getting Uncharted 4, at least not until I can find it for dirt cheap.

As for open world games, well, I usually love them, but mainly when they're fantasy-based (such as The Witcher 3 or Skyrim) or when they're JRPGs (such as Xenoblade or Dragon Quest). What I'm kinda burned out on is those super Western modern city settings, such as GTA or Just Cause... their overall feel just doesn't seem to appeal to me as much.

It's all about the JRPGs for me. I'm honestly kinda burned out on western open world titles, and I'm 100% not a fan of storyline-driven linear stuff.

My most anticipated title I'll be getting for PS4 is certainly Final Fantasy XV. However, Yooka-Laylee, which I backed for a Wii U version, remains my #1 game overall for next year. I miss those open-ended, mascot-based 3D platformers so much.

I remember playing this on my PC back in the day. I loved the 2.5D schtick, and had tons of fun. I wonder if it would hold up okay if I were to replay it nowadays.

Re: Comparing PS4's Sales to the Competition May Be Tough Moving Forwards

ricklongo

You know what the funny part is? The article talks about 39 million Xbox Live users active as of last month, which seemed like too big a number for me (given that I imagine the majority of 360 users have moved on at this point)... and then it dawned on me that users of Microsoft games on PC and Windows Phone actually count towards that number, which only adds to the muddiness of the actual statistic.

Re: Review: Transformers: Devastation (PS4)

I'm absolutely not a Transformers fan, meaning I don't really have interest in this, but I gotta say those cartoon graphics are amazing. I wish more AAA devs would go for stylized graphics these days rather than the same photo-realistic vibe.

Re: Live: Come and See the Best Digimon Game in Years Being Played Right Now on PS4

@JaxonH At the risk of going off-topic, it's remarkable how much our gaming trajectories look alike in our adult lives. I was a huge gaming enthusiast as a kid, owned a NES, a Sega Master System and subsequently a SNES. But then I got my first computer and all but forgot about console gaming for a long time. I had a PS2 (because frankly, who didn't), but I wouldn't get back to gaming in a big way until I got a very late-generation DS. I followed that up with a 3DS, Wii U, and PS4, and now you could say console gaming has become my #1 hobby once again.

On topic... I was never really fond of Digimon. I always enjoyed Pokemon games (and watched the anime for a while, although I was never really a fan of that), and for me Digimon always sounded like a bad ripoff. I'm curious to see whether this game can change my mind and entice me into getting it.

Re: PS4's Curated Content Is Asking for Trouble

@Dodoo Oh yeah, I'll take smart and challenging platforming over generic space shooting any day. But hey, that's me. You don't need to feel offended that not everyone shares your opinion when it comes to video games (I know, shocking).

Re: Soapbox: From Pretender to Major Player - Remembering PlayStation's Rise from the Frontlines

Great article. I went from being a diehard console enthusiast during the 8 and 16 bit eras to being almost exclusively a PC gamer during that generation, mainly because I thought those new polygon-heavy 3D games just had nothing on my SNES sprite-based classics (an opinion I hold to this day, and which helps make the SNES my favorite console of all time), so it's exciting to read reports such as this one and see history in the making with the power of hindsight.

I did come around eventually, learning to enjoy many PSOne and N64 classics in the process, but that remains the one generation I skipped entirely since I first got my NES and Master System.
