Everyone is acting like Grove Street went behind Rockstar’s back, made a ton of changes to the artstyle without their permission, then made the decision release the game unfinished. Grove Street were not the publisher. They would’ve needed approval for the artstyle change from Take Two, and it’s even possible they were forced to implement it. But Take Two and Rockstar also were 100% responsible for setting the November release, refusing refunds, and releasing the game buggy. They forced Grove Street to work hard in a crunched period of time, then kicked out their credit. That’s a dangerous precedent to the gaming industry and it’s wild people in these comments are defending it.
I think the best example of this is with their game announcements honestly. They’ve gone from announcing games like, 4 years out at some points and generally now the turnaround between reveal and release is a lot shorter. Concord came out a year after its teaser, Astro Bot a few months, Yotei seems to be a year after its teaser also. The only recent exception seems to be Marathon and Fairgame$ but those games seem to be in such fractured development with issues that recently popped up.
It sucks that the likely scenario from this is an acquisition from someone like NetEase or Tencent. However, leadership at Ubisoft has been so disgusting for ages now. We don’t live in a reality where just the top level is taken out, there’s always layoffs that affect lower levels. But something needs to change, and it needed to ages ago.
I’m so ready to skip the PS6 and get a PC next gen. This was announced literally less than a year from the original launch. If games are now taking 6-8 years to develop regardless, I can wait nowadays to play it on hardware that is a lot more flexible, doesn’t charge for online, and is more direct in what you can do with it. I still think consoles have a place, especially with physical media, but if Sony is also phasing that out like they seem to be with the Pro as well as just putting everything on PC, I don’t see why there’s any value in still being on this ship.
I know people will be like “Hah! That’ll show Square Enix” but this is a sequel to a story that has a lot of very passionate fans that hasn’t been properly followed up on in a while. I feel bad for the fans that could get blindsided by this.
I’m still only 45 hours into Persona 3 Reload. This has been my most anticipated game of the year but I wanna at least see the finish line of Reload before I buy it.
@ThaBEN February is the end of the fiscal year for most companies. That’s why February has been stacked for releases these past couple of years. It literally is not that deep.
I think a lot of the hate surrounding Yasuke and their depiction of Japanese culture has been fueled by just straight up racism and hate. There is no excusing a lot that’s been said about that character and I hope more of the gaming audience pushes back against those types of people. However, even as someone who thinks a lot of the critiques have been overblown I do feel like there was some stuff that was just really evidently awkward. Like genuinely why was there hip hop music playing during Yasuke’s gameplay? If you want to emphasize cultural mixing, do a blend of Japanese music from that era and one of the countless styles of African music from that era. I’m not really invested in how a $70 Ubisoft game turns out, but I hope they do things to turn the conversation around.
@DennisReynolds Tekken 8, MK1, and SF6 all have really bad monetization practices. They all have overpriced costumes and animations and stuff like that. Doesn’t excuse Capcom at all. However, just from the sheer excitement factor of the characters themselves it feels like SF has just kinda left MK1 and Tekken 8 in the dust this year.
Everyone’s saying “oh wow look at all these dumb companies not realizing they can make tons from single player games”. That’s not the lesson that’s gonna be learned here, there’s been countless of games that have proven that idea in the first place time and time again. There’s tons of good games that unfortunately don’t make the money they deserve. What companies are gonna learn, however, is to target the Chinese market more. The scope of this games success in China is unfathomable. Expect a lot more attempts from companies to break into the market.
Meanwhile SNK and Capcom are now exchanging characters left and right with now Street Fighter characters entering Fatal Fury. MK1 (and highkey Tekken 8 also) has had some rough DLC this year.
I’m surprised to see how much people are missing Jin. Obviously you have those dumb grifting culture warriors who see a male protagonist being followed up with a female protagonist and lose their mind, but there are a lot of rational people that miss Jin too. I liked his story and arc, but I don’t need it to continue. I’m really excited for the new possibilities of not only Atsu, but how the 400 year time leap can lead to new gameplay opportunities.
Who is that excited for Decapolice? Who is gonna be excited by the time this comes out in 2026? An unproven IP from a struggling developer that was supposed to be out last year. Genuinely what’s going on with their management. I wouldn’t be surprised if they shuttered beforehand.
General rule of thumb to consider marketing + distribution + international + ticket split with theaters is to take a budget and then multiply it by 2.5 to find the break even point. Borderlands would’ve had a break even point of roughly 287.5 million. Subtract the amount made, and that’s a loss of roughly 256 million. That’s bigger than what The Marvels lost last year and that’s one of the biggest Box Office Bombs ever.
We have barely gotten any PS5 games that really seem like they aren’t good enough in performance mode. Maybe FF7Rebirth but that seems like a Square issue that I hope they continue working on. I don’t think developers will be dropping performance mode anytime soon, especially with how it’s the dominant mode.
I mean they used like, one of the least liked performance modes on PS5. Of course it’s gonna look better. The fact that only one media outlet got this makes this feel like a marketing stunt more than anything.
I’ve seen a lot of character design videos around concord. There’s so much to learn about how much these fail. So many muted and blended tones, random splashes of color that don’t blend well with the rest of the color palettes, and a lot of extraneous additions that don’t serve to communicate gameplay function or express character. Idk how they’re gonna radically redesign the cast with them already being set for Secret Level, but there’s a lot of work that needs to be done to make them distinct and appealing.
I’m sorry but $700 without the vertical stand and disc drive is actually insane. I’m not here to tell people what they can and can’t spend their money on, but did anything in that video really spell out $200 worth of improvements? (And that’s without the vertical stand and disc drive of base model).
It took SFV the end of its initially planned last season to reach this same amount 4 years after launch. Hope Capcom invests in more FGs with this new money.
I don’t see how Fairgame$ is less of a disaster than Concord. Universally hated at announcement even more than Concord, most people already forgot about it, and people are gonna be a lot more distrustful of Sony live services.
Literally the fastest I’ve seen a game taken down. Even Hyenas had some time between its pre release beta and its release. It’s insane how literally everyone saw this coming from the very first moment of its official trailer. I hope the people at Firewalk are secure and they aren’t on the chopping block.
@Maubari The QA team wasn’t the one who chose to make it a live service. QA wasn’t the one responsible for most core gameplay mechanics and design. Layoffs should only be celebrated if they’re done at the very top.
It’s so amazing how literally despite so many cases telling executives why they shouldn’t do this, their first instinct is to always lay off QA. Congrats on either making your next project more buggy at launch or making it take longer to develop and squash out the bugs.
Let’s assume every copy was digital so we don’t need to factor in the cut from game stores and packaging. Let’s even assume literally everyone bought the $60 digital deluxe version. Taking into consideration the cut that Steam gets from games: That would be $1320000 and that’s with all the best possible conditions. I don’t know where the $100 million budget came from, but the budget was undoubtedly high. This is maybe the biggest bomb in the game industry ever.
$70 is the max for me, and that would only be for like 30-100 hour masterclass experiences. Persona 6 could launch for $80 and win GOTY and I’d still wait for a sale.
This game isn’t even on Gamepass like the previous Atlus titles. I don’t get the logic of Microsoft where they are definitely deprioritizing exclusives, but they still wanna do the marketing stunts that were very common last generation where they pretend like 3dd party games are exclusive. That’s not even considering that it’s Metaphor of all games. Is Xbox really banking on their notoriously Western audience to buy a $70 new JRPG ip?
Does the game have any launcher combos? That’s like one of the biggest things I feel like distinguishes games like DMC and God of War from souls games, and with everyone saying “actually it’s not a souls game it’s a character action game!” im curious what exactly they mean by that.
This might be jumping the gun a bit but im confident at this point it’s just gonna be the entire slate. If they’re announcing their big holiday title by one of their best developers and an acclaimed IP is coming to PS5 before the Xbox version even launches, I don’t think anything is off limits, especially with how Xbox console sales are just gonna keep going down with this move. I don’t necessarily care a lot about most Xbox titles—except for Blade—so it’s not like I desperately want them, I just think that’s the reality.
I feel like im going insane reading these comments. Genshin Impact is one of the most predatory games there is. Not even mentioning the cultural insensitivities alleged by some players—the entire gacha model is built off the backs of exploiting vulnerable people to give up all their free time and money into games of chance. This man became a billionaire off of predatory actions that have had very real affects on real people’s lives. I don’t think the average developer who has a passion for games and is just trying to do their job should face intense criticism. But this guy? Absolutely no sympathy from me.
Do people voting Astro Bot not realize the game comes out in like 2 weeks? The only far out PS5 game that we know of and I would love to see more info of is Expedition 33. I think a Marvel VS Capcom release date is a reasonable want as well. I would love to see announcements from Sony’s first party studios, but there’s enough games coming out at the end of this year to where I’m satisfied.
I can pick up the original at GameStop for like $10. This isn’t even a Last of Us case where it was a PS3 game, this is a native PS4 game that still looks good. I can’t imagine why anyone during a general economic downturn would spend $60 on this.

Independent teams are definitely still struggling also, but corporate security seems like less and less of a safe bet.
