MS could have easily paid more then Sony and locked down exclusive deals etc, but that's not their business model, their model is to pretty much only let you rent games for a while paying a monthly sub, whilst also being blasted with endless ads to pay for it all. They don't want you to own anything.
Shame they are trying to destroy Sonys business model which is the opposite, and gives you a reason to own a PlayStation. Even if the games were on PC they are sold to you, not rented for a few weeks or months so long as you pay the monthly fee.
@Deadsea93 Well if you think about it, what Microsoft wanted originally with the Xbox One launch, they are finally getting under the radar. All digital sales, constant online checks required, and a Game Subscription service so you won’t buy any physical games. How long till they start making those Game Pass games digital only? The only thing missing is Kinect.
@Godot25 I wasn’t implying that the AWS / Microsoft cloud investigation has to do with gaming, I also never said using cloud to run games was the same as cloud gaming, although it is a link to a cloud only gaming future as it requires computers in the cloud to run it all. You seemed to have made a lot of assumptions.
My point was they are investing in cloud heavily, and if they do use the cloud to power their next console then it’s hard to accept their claim of winding down cloud gaming. It’s more of a case of they are going in a different direction with it I think. It’s obvious they want Game Pass to be the dominant way you play in the future. And PC Game Pass is meant to be growing last I heard?
@Godot25 And yet their next gen console will be using the cloud to boost processing power and games performance, according to the leaked court documents from this case. So yeah I wouldn’t pay too much attention to what they ‘say’, Microsoft and Amazon have both been reported for investigation by the CMA in the UK for cloud services and their monopoly, they own over 80% of the market between them. Cloud is HUGE business Amazon makes more money from its cloud services AWS then any other part of their business including the online store! MS are going to try and drag gaming into that world, Game Pass will be the only way how you play their games one day.
@Rob_230 Brad Smiths arrogant immature postings when the CMA blocked the deal was one of the reasons I’ve jumped ship back to Sony, shows their true colours.
……………………………………………….
I appreciated the CMA blocking the deal initially as no one else would, and COD will be on all platforms for 10 years minimum now.
I just hope MS leave them alone to do what they want, cause personally I found Starfield to dull as dishwater boring.
Sadly I expect this is a green light for the big boys to just hoover everyone up now, once a deal this big goes through, the rest will jump on the bandwagon.
I'm planning on getting a 2 terabyte drive, is the Western Digital Black SN850X still a good one? It is cheaper then the official PlayStation branded Western Digital drives. I did note that one drive was faster but will the PS5 need or use that extra speed?
Gotta say it's pretty impressive they will include your digital games. So if you are away you can leave your PS5 off saving your electric bill, and still stream your games. Very cool. Gives there Portal thing some more worth.
@TommyNL Exactly, but some like the idea, the slimmer digital model looks nice though on that vertical stand. Wonder if they’ve updated the wireless in it?
Still they should have priced it so the digital plus separate disk drive is the same price as the one with the disk drive, instead the combination is now more expensive.
I think it’s a sign though that next gen will be all digital only. Like with the new updated Series X coming out. But yeah I’m liking the new digital PS5.
Again as I said on the other article, if you look closely it has a clear plastic peg that holds it up when it's vertical. Cheap and nasty looking, don't isn't flat on the bottom at all.
If you notice, the one with the disk drive laying in its side has some cheap looking clear plastic leg holding it up. I bet that goes in the gap between those new panels, and comes in the box with the disk drive model.
Makes the already really ugly new disk model even uglier. So so so glad I just got an OG PS5 disk model..
He’s basically retiring so he can live in England full time and go and watch the football I’d imagine, and he is getting too old to do all the travelling back and forth to America.
@Sakai I don’t think much of his service games idea at all, and he did show some arrogance in the ActiBliz trials IMO, but he did oversee the fully successful launch of a new console during a global pandemic and has come out selling double the main competitor, ignoring Nintendo of course.
lol I literally posted my Series X to its new owner today as I’m moving to PS5 and I read this! Oh well I just about got over the last hack they had which impacted me.
@Martsmall Because nothing is given away for free. For the Game Pass model to work it either needs massive numbers in its user base or pride increases. It was only the first that we have had. MS doesn't have the numbers yet. When you are spending a couple of hundred million for big games to be in the service you need massive cash flow to make it a viable business model.
Sony are the same, but Sony seem to want their service to compliment PlayStation consoles, Microsoft seem to want Game Pass to replace the Xbox console and will eventually be Xbox, their next gen console is a test bed for that being reported as a hybrid cloud based system.
Also those rewards? A lot of them are based in you completing tasks in Game Pass games... thus another incentive to make you buy the service. And it is up to Microsoft's discretion to change how they work or scrap the rewards scheme if they choose. MS are currently spending billions on Xbox from all sides, it will want a return on that sooner or later.
And you wait, that Game Pass price will go up quite a bit, and you’ll get many more ads on Xbox now. Seeing as it’s costing millions to hundreds of millions per game they our in there. A lot of home truths about Microsoft and Xbox came out this week.
@Beerheadgamer82 The same argument can easily be turned around, if Sony can buy exclusives why can’t Microsoft? That’s all they needed to do, instead they are just buying everyone up. I like COD though and as clauses state it cannot go onto Game Pass day and date I have no interest in Game Pass anymore.
After the revelations in this weeks leak, I’d rather the CMA stood their ground and blocked the deal. Still keeps value on my Series X as it goes on eBay this weekend, But MS hasn’t changed one bit, still has grand daydreams of just owning everything and everyone, a total monopoly.
@EVIL-C Back in the day when I had the PS1, I bought a magazine every month with a game demo CD on it, now everything’s digital and hardly any game dares to release a demo, excluding Sony’s new paid for demo feature.
@EVIL-C I prefer demos, it’s sad Sony lock that to its top tier model, but I get to try a game before I buy and Sony doesn’t spend literal hundreds of millions to get the game on its service.
These figures are obscene and that business model is not sustainable in the slightest. They will have to massively increase subscriber numbers and the cost of Game Pass to sustain it.
@elpardo1984 What have Sony done? Paid for exclusivity, that’s all, they may have bought some studios but not many, and I think Bungie was their biggest purchase! And that was solely on the agreement all their games can be multiplat. There has been nothing stopping MS from out bidding Sony on exclusivity deals, nothing! And yet they year after year after the 360 just never bothered, and now to catch up they are just buying the biggest studios in the business with the biggest games titles, and if they weren’t forced to they would make them all exclusive too.
So whilst I agree Sony may have performed some questionable acts in the last, paying for exclusivity is a long way from buying the entire studio making the game! And a HELL of a lot more expensive. One way takes some games from other platforms, the other takes ALL games from other platforms.
My Series X is literally boxed up, waiting for me to package it in a brown box, weigh it for postage costs and put it on eBay, because I am sick of the forced ads on it and Starfield is just meh. Reading the news of a digital only online required only future with the brand just cements my decision. Think I’ll go PS5 and Nintendos next console. Quality gaming.
But also reading about the fact they seriously considered buying Nintendo do is frightening, it would destroy Ninty and cause irreparable damage to the entire games market and the consumers would lose out big time, hey but at least it would be a ‘career moment’ for Spencer right? Microsoft hasn’t changed at all, even with new leadership they are still as monopolistic as ever in their mindset.
I laughed when Apple showed this, love the iPhone etc but no, leave the big games off the 6.1” screen please, even the Switch Lite feels a much better gaming device then the iPhone does.
@elpardo1984 And the best way to support consumers is to block mergers, as they do nothing other then to reduce competition, impact innovation, and only line the pockets of share holders and executives more whilst losing talent from the industry as inevitably people are laid off after a merger.
So basically Phil has visions of having a total monopoly over PC and Console global gaming market. Kinda why I sided with the CMA and its stance against the ActiBliz buy out. But I do not think they will ever be allowed to buy Nintendo unless they force the share holders to sell and likewise with Valve, but this does give a glimpse of the monopolistic mindset they have. They seriously need to just invest those billions into their current studios, and make some damn games.
@Oz_Momotaro Well the PS5 is huge, do rat need a Peo, just the slim model like they have done for every generation. They don’t need to launch an 8” mobile device to stream your games to either but here we are.
Why don’t they announce the new PS5 already, the rumoured slightly smaller one with removable disk drive. Get a Christmas boost. And don’t choose the same day as a Nintendo direct as Ninty have a ton of first party games in the wings they can announce today.
Whilst Game Pass Ultimate paid for monthly is a lot more expensive, you can find deals that make it much cheaper for a year then Sonys service and even more so now. I've never seen deals on Sonys service though.
The market for this is so niche, I can’t see it lasting more then 2 years in production, we will see though. I mean I would say it’s totally pointless if you use your PS5 controller with an iPad for instance and remote play. I can understand why Sony hasn’t made another real portable system though, as it’s MUCH simpler having one platform, and Nintendo kinda dominate the mobile console space. I have a Steam Deck and a Switch Lite I just got second hand, and the Switch is instantly a better system for me, but yes you lose a lot of power then.
@SillyBoyJudas If it works over WiFi outside your home. That would make sense if it does. However as it’s WiFi only, I have a feeling it’ll be expensive. Because otherwise surely they would have priced it accordingly to offer a 5G version as well? If it does work outside the house on WiFi as you suggest then it becomes a bit more useful. Still it’ll be a bit bulky I think looking at that design and an 8” screen.
Looks awful looks cheap, literally like some modder made it and posted it on You Tube, hey look what I did with my Sony tablet and Dual Sense. And only PS5 games over WiFi? Why? It serves a minuscule market at best. Looks like a total waste of time and money in R&D IMO.
I had a Vita but sold it, it's alright but was a bit meh to me. I much prefer my PSP which I still have. But Sony totally missed a trick here, the handheld market is on FIRE right now and will only get bigger, and they came out with this thing? They could have easily made a Vita 2 and the world have gone nuts.
That was truly awful. Everyone expected Metal Gear and Final Fantasy, Spider Man 2 graphically looked like a PS4 game and they showed the entire game nearly. And who the hell is going to buy a PS5 only streaming device? Who??. Marathon was the only exciting game and that’s been know about for ages.
@thefourfoldroot1 Thats the beauty of Game Pass, it has a huge difference in genre of games. No one will play everything on it as it won’t suit all your tastes. As for big AAA games recently, that’s a trap, but the fact is they DO release them, all, day and date. Sony does not. And then it has all the Bethesda games on it for instance so Fallout etc.
Sony has a habit of closing its studios. It’s. It good at all them doing this. They should be using that studios talent for other things not firing them!
No, it isn’t better, it’s good I’ll give it that, but PlayStations service will only ever match Game Pass when they offer the big AAA games day and date, not a year later. Game Pass has had some incredible indie games on it Sony hasn’t got.
@Chaosbros Exactly, but sadly they are obsessed with making everything a service now. But I only really care about Gears Of War and State Of Decay. At least one of those is getting a sequel at some point, but I'll buy those games. All I've really played in Game Pass are brilliant indie games like Deliver Us The Moon or The Gunk. That's where I've found value and I haven't played a lot either.
I should add personally I have played a handful of games from Game Pass and they've been great, but none have been MS ones, I've tried Forza and Halo and then kinda stopped playing them. Gears is the one series I love and I played that one, it would be the one game to keep me on Xbox but there is no news of any new one coming.
Quick Resume has been Xbox's most redeeming feature to be honest. That works brilliantly. So I'll probably keep my Series X and get a PS5 Slim and find time for both. But I won't be buying another Xbox.
His last answer has nearly concreted my decision to sell my Series X and move to PS5. It's obvious he and Microsoft are fully committed to turning Xbox to a service now and not a platform, they'll put more resources into Xcloud and Game Pass. The reason games have been running better on PS5 is because Xbox introduces an entirely new development platform this gen. Sony just updated their old one. Add that to Phil's 'hands off' approach to studios including their own, and you can see what games have struggled, teams aren't experienced enough to utilise the new toolsets and platform but isn't providing the support they need to.
Sony is actively going to studios including third party ones and helping them optimise games for its platform.
And then he said we can't make a 11 out of 10 Starfield game. We want our creators to be creative! So they can make any crap they like and not chase decent review scores?
One of my favourite games this gen, and the one that helped nudge me towards Xbox is in PS5, The Ascent, and a lot of others I like too are so I'm going 'back' to PlayStation, I only have time for one console. Maybe a Switch too, and that won't be Xbox moving forward.
Read between the lines and look at Microsoft's business model and I doubt they'll have a console next gen. I also doubt here in the UK they will get ActiBliz either, but having learnt the huge share of cloud streaming services MS has a grip on I'm not surprised. MS must have known that and that it would be a stumbling block.
I would say they need to stop buying the biggest games studios and put more effort into what they have, but as Phil showed here that's not their business model now.

Re: Xbox Boss Admits Microsoft Can't 'Outconsole' PS5
@Chaosbros Exactly, but sadly they are obsessed with making everything a service now. But I only really care about Gears Of War and State Of Decay. At least one of those is getting a sequel at some point, but I'll buy those games. All I've really played in Game Pass are brilliant indie games like Deliver Us The Moon or The Gunk. That's where I've found value and I haven't played a lot either.
Re: Xbox Boss Admits Microsoft Can't 'Outconsole' PS5
I should add personally I have played a handful of games from Game Pass and they've been great, but none have been MS ones, I've tried Forza and Halo and then kinda stopped playing them. Gears is the one series I love and I played that one, it would be the one game to keep me on Xbox but there is no news of any new one coming.
Quick Resume has been Xbox's most redeeming feature to be honest. That works brilliantly. So I'll probably keep my Series X and get a PS5 Slim and find time for both. But I won't be buying another Xbox.
Re: Xbox Boss Admits Microsoft Can't 'Outconsole' PS5
Re: PS5 Pro Is '100%' Happening, Says Reliable Report
@Lexluther23 In August 2021 Sony announced the PS5 disk edition was no longer being sold at a loss:

I’ll be surprised if the digital edition doesn’t also sell at a profit now too.
