Re: Talking Point: Have Sony's Third-Party PS5 Deals Made Up for Its Lack of First-Party Games?

john_c

I have never understood the desire to have first-party exclusives. There are more than enough games to play on the system to make it worthwhile to have. I do not care whether a game is exclusive or who makes it as long as there are enough good games to play.

The exclusives are the problem in the industry. It is the reason you have to pay for three, and maybe more, different systems to play the games you want you to play.

I only buy one system and if the game is not it then I do not play it. Simple as that. Whilst I am interested in other games I do not care enough about them enough to buy another system.

Death to exclusives and first-party titles. Give the players the chance to play what they want on what system they want.

Re: Football Manager 2024 Console (PS5) - Lacking Console Edition Is on a Losing Streak

john_c

As someone who has played FM23 console (150 hours) and FM24 console (5 hours) I have to say this review is not helpful and I disagree with a lot of it.
For a start you can click L3 and use the controller as a mouse. So you do not have to use the left stick, d-pad combination. The second thing is that the console game is the new version of Touch which purposely uses stripped down features - namely for us PC veterans who have tired of the many useless features of the full fat versions.
A lot of the in match things in the PC version are not very worthwhile either - winning is more about formations and tactics than talking to individual players which I have never used in all the years I have played it on PC before moving to console. When you get used to using the UI it is a better version of the game than the PC version unless you like doing pointless busy work.
I understand the subjectivity but I would rate this as a 8.5. Not perfect but better than the review score. Maybe it is because I know my way around the game. The new features have enhanced the game.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

john_c

I may be showing my age - but like Roy Keane - I think the need for good customer relations is a load of nonsense - just play the bleeping game and stop all this needing handholding nonsense.

When I was a lad you got zero customer relations - bought games at a market stall based on the reviews in a magazine.

Enough of this endless waffle.

Re: PS Plus April 2022 PS5, PS4 Games Announced

john_c

I'll pass on Hood - have zero interest on multiplayer rubbish.

Spongebob - looks okay and fun - will add it but not sure if I'll get around to playing it.

Slay The Spire - this is the most anticipated for me. Will definitely give this a go.

Re: Microsoft Buys Call of Duty Publisher Activision Blizzard

john_c

@ChadR I do not think it is a political decision but a money one.

If they can keep the current audience but add the extra they get from a female lead and promoting it then they are quids in.

It is the same with the Hollywood studios. They only care about money not politics. They see diversity making them more money than the old model.

Cynical from them but sadly true.

Re: Talking Point: What PS Plus Games for January 2022 Do You Want?

john_c

I have gone the other way. I get most of my games through PS Plus. There are very few games I am prepared to pay money for.

You see Greedfall and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider are decent enough games but I was never going to buy it full price and they are not even good enough for the sales. The only game I am looking to buy this year will be the FF7 Intergrade when I finally get a PS5. The only other new games will be from what we get from PS Plus - I haven't bought much this year either.

Knack 2 would be good as Knack was fun on PS Plus.

Re: Shin Megami Tensei Offshoot Monark Dated for February 2022

john_c

Looks like it will be a traditional JRPG. If the gameplay is sound then it will be fun.
Not too bothered about the graphics as they seem good enough for me.
Nocturne is a class above the so-called prettier games released so far this year - IMO - and gameplay is more important than graphics.

Re: Yakuza: Like a Dragon Sequel Announced and In Development

john_c

The problem with the real time combat in the other Yakuza games was it was so simplistic that even a duffer like me could master it with increasing ease.

Mash square for the goons and block, dodge, square and weapon for the bosses. There was very little variety for the combat and you didn't need the skill moves to win the fights.

Now with Nocturne you have to get your tactics right or you would lose the turn based battles.

Real time combat offers less challenge in my experience.

Re: Hands On: It'll Take More Than Sam Allardyce to Save eFootball on PS5, PS4

john_c

When you get past the frightful over-reaction on t'Internet if it is anything like PES 2021 when it is fully patched in November it will be a good game.

PES 2021 is a good game and I can keep on playing it. Downloading the game and the extras on PS Plus will cost me nothing. It is a strange thing to release this version but the last two years have told me not to over-react to things.

The Master Laegue DLC is the thing I am waiting for. It is cost me nothing so I won't get too mad.

Re: FIFA 22 (PS5) - Football Sim Makes Meaningful Strides on the Pitch

john_c

This is where E-Football (PES) may come strong. As with all there are certain modes In these games I have no interest in playing.

If the E-Football match engine is sound and I can add on the Master League for a reasonable price I may go that way. I do not want to pay full price when I only want to play career mode.

I wonder if EA would consider splitting its game into component parts. It may if Konami do well.

Re: FIFA 22 (PS5) - Football Sim Makes Meaningful Strides on the Pitch

john_c

A question about the Sim Match mode which was to try and be a Football Manager type thing in the career mode. Is it any better? There seemed to be very little correlation between the tactics you set or things you changed to what actually happened on the pitch. Is it any better and is it still only a 2D match engine?

Re: Rumour: PS Plus September 2021 PS5, PS4 Games Leaked Ahead of Official Reveal

john_c

Like others on here I do not understand why some people bitch and moan about PS Plus but the truth is some people live to bitch and moan about everything.

For me I have had 6 games I will play from PS Plus already and I will add Hitman 2 to the list.

For someone like me without much spare money about paying £35 for 7 games is good value.

Re: Former Sony Boss Fearful of Industry Consolidation

john_c

I think Shawn Leydon is one of the old breed of people in the industry who actually liked video games - including the guy who giddily announced the FF7 remake.

The industry is now more filled than ever with businessmen who see it as product no different to a lump of cheese. And that is a shame for gaming.

Re: Talking Point: Is Free-to-Play the Future for Sports Games?

john_c

A bit late to the parade on the new FIFA, which was covered yesterday I think, but do you know if the Career Mode Sim Match mode is going to get improved over last year? It was a good idea but could do with improvements to match Pes and Football Manager.

There is still no news about FM coming to PS5 I take it.

And I may be able to buy a PS5 before November - I am hoping

Re: Talking Point: Is Free-to-Play the Future for Sports Games?

john_c

For me buying the base and the Master League as a bolt on would be a better way to do this. I have no interest in a lot of modes such as online play and such. If they charged me £20 for squad updates and access to either career mode/master league I would be more interested than paying £70 for a game with lots of modes I will not play

Re: PS5 Games Are Still Selling Poorly at Retail in Japan

john_c

@ShogunRok: the better part of the article and most interesting angle is whether the units are going to scalpers. There is another interesting article to be had on the way that the physical market is diminishing.

The first week sales of the 2016 game (from this site) was listed as being 27,534 for a system with a higher install base (not sure if that is just physical or both) so 14,663 is not that bad in comparison when you add the lower install base as context. If the game was a cross-gen title would it have matched the previous game?

The article is written to infer game sales are bad but the above paragraph surely shows that this may not be as bad as the inference.

Re: PS5 Games Are Still Selling Poorly at Retail in Japan

john_c

@AgentGuapo No you can't. The split between physical and digital is growing year by year in favour of digital.

The latest split in the UK is 85% in favour. You cannot judge a game's success based on physical data alone as the split for any particular game could be 99/1 or 80/20 or 75/25 or 50/50.

It is not difficult to wait for all the data is available to make an informed comment rather than speculation. Speculation is bad journalism.

Re: Future Bethesda Games Will Ship 'Where Game Pass Exists'

john_c

Don't forget that Microsoft want Gamepass on Playstation and Nintendo. They asked Sony once before and Sony turned them down. This will be a play to get Gamepass on Playstation as much as anything else.

Jim Sterling made the best point when he pointed out that Microsoft will do what is best for Microsoft. They could mean keep it exclusive to PC/Xbox/Gamepass but also milking the former until they double-dip and sell it on to other consoles if they feel it will make them money.

Mircosoft are not as fuelled by the dogma of exclusives as everyone on here and will do what works for them best

Re: PS5 Sold Out in Japan, But Launch Numbers Are Dire

john_c

I think someone needs to go back to English comprehension classes. You cannot define something that has sold out all its units as being a dire launch.

This is sensationalist, click-bait journalism at its worst and the author should be ashamed.

Re: The Elder Scrolls 6 Being Xbox Exclusive Is 'Hard to Imagine', Says Todd Howard

john_c

@TheFrenchiestFry I am sorry I do not agree with you on this one. Time will tell of course but there is no way I can see it happening.

As I have said Microsoft may consider taking a hit on this deal in order to make Gamepass successful but they will lose money on this deal. They do have the money to lose though.

Supermarkets call this loss leaders

Re: Talking Point: Are You Worried About the Future of Western RPGs on PS5?

john_c

Western RPGS are bloated pieces of trash. I have never finished an Elder Scrolls game because I become bored halfway through. Assassin's Creed is just the same game every year with the same collectables.

The JRPGS, even the longer ones, are better paced and the levels are tighter. Give me Persona or Yakuza over them anyday.

The Witcher was the best of them because they didn't have the endless busy-work to bloat the game out.

Re: Gamers Will Happily Pay $70 for PS5 Games, Argues Analyst

john_c

Just like every other generation there will be a few games that I'll happily pay full price for. As someone who doesn't play online I can wait for the other games to drop down to a price I am willing to pay for it.

BTW if you are paying £70 for a game that gives you hours of enjoyment and also has replay value you have not been ripped off.

Re: Reaction: Spider-Man PS5 Debacle Shows Sony Is Out of Touch

john_c

Whinge, whinge, whinge. Moan, Moan, Moan, Whinge, Whinge, Whinge, Moan, Moan, Moan. That's modern gamers in a nutsell.

So I get to play the PS4 game I own on my PS5 for free but if I want to upgrade the graphics I have to pay - seems fair to me. It will have cost the games company money to develop the upgrade.

It is a bit like ordering a steak which comes with fries and peas. You then order the side dishes and expect them for free as you have already paid for the steak dish.

It is not only games companies that are getting greedy.

Re: Reaction: PS5 Price Under Scrutiny After Disruptive Xbox Series S Reveal

john_c

The other interesting thing was there were heavy rumours on social media that Sony was going to make a couple of big game announcements in the August State of Play. These may have been held back to counter any Microsoft price announcement. I think this month will see the release date, the price and these big game announcements in a September state of play to get the limelight back.

Re: Reaction: PS5 Price Under Scrutiny After Disruptive Xbox Series S Reveal

john_c

Nothing Microsoft can do will make me buy their console. They have no games I cannot play anywhere else or that I am that bothered about playing period.

After the DRM fiasco of the Xbox One they have now made an error of making system sellers like Halo still be available on Xbox One. What is the point in upgrading?

Their Gamepass is another stab at trying to kill the second hand games market.

There is absolutely no reason to buy an Xbox Series X/S apart from prettier graphics as the base game will be held to the limitations of the Xbox One. Unless there are Xbox Series only games I haven't heard of?
