Re: Poll: What PS5 Launch Games Will You Buy?

Paranoimia

@Dr-M Oh, it's quite diverse, and I'm not saying they're bad games... there's just not much of real interest to me.

I used to like R&C, but got bored of them with A Crack in Time, so the new one isn't the 'must play' it once would have been. I might pick it up, but later when it's cheaper.

Similar with Miles Morales - I enjoyed Spider-Man, but I picked it up late and cheap in a sale; the new game isn't a system seller for me.

Probably the one game I would get day one (if I had a confirmed PS5) is Watch Dogs Legion as I enjoyed the first two, but again... I don't feel like I absolutely have to play it.

The PS Plus Collection would probably be my biggest day-one draw, but most of what I'd want to play, I already own on PS4, so not exactly a system seller; I don't really care about higher resolutions and frame-rates when I've already played perfectly good versions on my Pro.

If you want to see what games interest me:

Horizon 2 or something from Naughty Dog would have had me excited, or a sequel to Days Gone. For what's available at launch, I'm happy to wait. I didn't really feel we needed the next generation yet anyway - I could happily have waited another year or two. Plus, I'm still not entirely convinced we're going to see much improvement in games beyond 'prettier' and 'more frames', at least not outside of Sony's first-party stuff. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I refuse to get my hopes up, as the only innovation many devs/publishers seem interested in is how to cram more MTX into games.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Want to Know About PS5?

Paranoimia

Can you set the system to record gameplay footage to an external drive, rather than the internal SSD? If not, is there already space reserved for the recording so you don't lose more when you record?

Any indication as to whether you can shunt PS5 games to an external HDD when the internal storage is full, rather than deleting and re-installing?

Is PS5 any quicker at installing games from disc than PS4?

When you copy media to USB, does it copy at full speed unlike PS4? Can copies be done in the background so you can get on with something else?

Can you install PS4 games on the internal SSD if you wish?

With the system out in 2 weeks, why is some info still embargoed?

Re: Will PS5 Support 1440p Screens? Fans Are Eager for Answers

Paranoimia

@Arnna I don't. Up to this point, there's been very little need for one; I don't own any 4K movies, and there's precious little TV content either. That said, it's also never been an issue for me - I also only have a 1080p monitor for my PC, even though it's more than capable of 4K.

It was only ever going to be gaming which nudged me towards a 4K TV, and even now I'm thinking I'll hold off until next spring to get one, when not only will PS5's capabilities be better known, but there'll also be a wider range of fully compatible TVs available... and probably at lower price points than they are now. Until then, a PS5 will run perfectly well on my current 1080p Bravia.

I've considered a large (32+ inches) 4K gaming monitor, but they get stupidly expensive compared to 4K TVs, even though on the surface they're offering you less (no tuners, etc.); yes, I know there are other technical issues which supposedly justify the prices, but it still strikes me as ludicrous. I certainly wouldn't want to put a PS5 on anything smaller than 42 inches, so monitors are out of the running... it'll have to be a TV.

Re: Rumour: Share Factory Studio Coming to PS5

Paranoimia

@thedevilsjester This is why for the longest time, I've wanted info about how the system works with external storage.

Something like Sharefactory is the kind of app I'd want to shunt to and use from an external HDD, rather than have it taking up space on what - let's face it - is going to be some pretty expensive internal storage.

They said in the UI reveal video that PS5 will be capable of recording gameplay at up to 4K 60fps. If it's like the PS4 and that video can only be recorded on the internal drive, at around 20GB for an hour of video, that's going to chew through your internal storage rapidly even if you fully expand it. You certainly won't be wanting to keep many clips on the system.

And let's hope it's quicker than PS4 if you want to copy clips off to USB, too.

Re: Ripstone Deals Poker Club to PS5 for European Launch

Paranoimia

Personally, I've never seen the point of card and board games on computers/consoles.

The point of poker and such is the risk/reward of losing/winning cash, which I've never found carries over to a videogame.

For board games, the appeal (for me at least) is the tactile feel of rolling the dice and moving the pieces... and in some cases, arguing with family over the implementation and/or interpretation of certain rules... which again, you don't get in a videogame version.

Still, if it's your thing, more power to ya.

Re: Rumour: Share Factory Studio Coming to PS5

Paranoimia

The problem with Sharefactory was that nowhere near enough custom intros/outros/transitions were released for games. There were some great ones for Horizon, DriveClub, etc. Hope it gets better support from devs on PS5.

Re: Earning PS5 Trophies Might Net You Some Digital Rewards

Paranoimia

@ShogunRok "Sony's been leading up to this on PS4. Like people have mentioned, some games have given out exclusive avatars if you have the Platinum."

Will be great as long as they ensure that people actually get them, and that it isn't decided by region or by random. Never did get my theme for Horizon. It really needs to be an "everyone or no-one" approach.

Re: Sony Looking into Feedback on Roundly Criticised PS4 Party Changes

Paranoimia

Why would anyone want a party chat to be like Discord?

Discord is a mess in visual form - hundreds of people effectively talking over one another, with no way to follow a discussion. Why would you want that in audio form?

To my mind, small, private party chats were the ideal solution to the chaotic in-game lobbies where you could hear everyone talking/eating/drinking/singing/playing music. Baffles me who'd want more than 10 people in private party chat.

Re: FIFA 21 - A Step Up from FIFA 20, But Must Do Better on PS5

Paranoimia

Why is it that every single EA game which features 'realistic' character models always seems to have waxy-looking skin? Like a sheen on it - not sweaty looking, but more... 'polished'.

Is it just me, or do others see it that way too? FIFA, Madden, NHL... even NFS, Star Wars... they always have the same look.

Re: Devil May Cry 5 Takes Four Seconds to Load on PS5, 22 Seconds on PS4

Paranoimia

@SJBUK Well, we'll have to wait and see. The reason I'm a little pessimistic is that developers tend to play it safe and stick to what they know. That, and the fact that all many people seem interested in are resolutions and frame rates, which in turn encourages devs to play it safe and make the same again, but with minor tweaks.

If we're honest, PC has had the power and the SSDs for a good number of years now, but have games significantly changed or improved outside of graphics and frame rates?

Re: Devil May Cry 5 Takes Four Seconds to Load on PS5, 22 Seconds on PS4

Paranoimia

@thefourfoldroot Nope. He didn't have those. Haven't really been a fan of Wipeout since the original anyway.

I played EVE: Valkyrie, RIGS, the Star Wars X-Wing thingy, and a few others. I was impressed with the hardware itself, and there have been a couple of games I'd like to play (Robinson, Moss), but there's nowhere near enough games on it that I'd want to play to justify buying one for myself.

Re: Devil May Cry 5 Takes Four Seconds to Load on PS5, 22 Seconds on PS4

Paranoimia

@thefourfoldroot Nah. Used it twice in my life... the original arcade models back in the 90s, and a friend's PSVR. It doesn't do much for me. While it's visually immersive, I've found gameplay for most games quite basic and limited.

Plus I despise having anything on my head for any length of time.

At the moment, if I got a VR system, I probably wouldn't use it for gaming at all, but more for the virtual tour type stuff, to 'visit' places I otherwise may never see.

Re: Devil May Cry 5 Takes Four Seconds to Load on PS5, 22 Seconds on PS4

Paranoimia

@Jaz007 We'll see, I guess. But the things I'm thinking of... better AI, more interactive worlds, etc. could have been done by now.

The fact that R&C is the only game so far that anyone can point to kinda proves the point I'm making. The rest - so far - seem like more of the same, and don't really justify new hardware.

It's potentially an advantage which only Sony first-party studios may truly make use of, as others will still have to cater for other platforms; and we already know that one of those platform holders has a habit of requiring 'feature parity', potentially preventing developers from having features in games which their platform doesn't/can't support.

It's all very well saying "it allows developers to...", but it still requires them to actually do it. So far I've not seen much evidence. I do genuinely hope I'm wrong.

Re: Devil May Cry 5 Takes Four Seconds to Load on PS5, 22 Seconds on PS4

Paranoimia

Never been that bothered by loading times, coming form 20+ minutes on a C64 cassette.

Naughty Dog seemed to have it cracked, with an initial load and then nothing noticeable during the game.

Though others did begin to try my patience, particularly open-world games. Horizon wasn't great for loading, but the quality of the game made it worthwhile. GR Breakpoint gets very intrusive for the supposedly 'fast' travel... so much so that I tended not to use it, but rather find a helicopter and actually make the journey across the map.

Even so, when loading times are one of the 'big things' people are talking about, it's easier to understand why this 'next gen' is the least excited I've been in a long time.

I want something that's going to really improve the actual games I'm playing. The new controller might help a bit. Load times, 4K, and 60fps are not going to lead to better games - only more of the same, but slightly prettier. And that's not enough to get me excited.

Re: Western Digital Reveals First PS5 Compatible SSD

Paranoimia

@MarcG420 Smaller than they would be, perhaps. But that's not what was stated. If someone installs a game which takes up 100GB, I don't think they're going to be that bothered that it might have taken up 120GB on a HDD.

As the other article I linked states, savings from not requiring duplication of assets could be lost or even outweighed by the higher quality of those assets. So while it's certainly true that games may be smaller than they may have been if using a standard HDD, the assertion that they will be smaller over all isn't going to be true in all cases. In the case of Spider-Man Remastered, it's entirely possible that the game takes up less space because it shares at least some assets with the Miles Morales game; that would make sense, as it's the same city... plus you can't buy it as a stand-alone title.

Wherever you choose to look, the general consensus is that the installs are going to be large, and eat up the initial internal storage fairly quickly.

Re: Western Digital Reveals First PS5 Compatible SSD

Paranoimia

@thefourfoldroot No, I read it all. They're about the same size as PS4. That makes them not smaller.

If you only play 2 or 3 then yes, you'll be fine. I don't play that many myself compared to some, but on PS4 I've got a 1.5TB internally and a 1TB external, and I've still had to delete some to make room after various patches, updates, and DLCs.
