Re: Round Up: Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Reviews Climb to the Top

RaymanFan2

I really like Jim Sterling's review.
UC2 was great, but once you got to the monastery it really did just become a couple hours of fairly straightforward but very difficult gunfights, and Naughty Dog is above that kind of design.

UC3, while it might have inconsistencies and feel rushed in the story, does exactly what ND wanted to do with Uncharted all along - make a game that could be the dictionary definition of an AAA game.

Re: October's PlayStation Plus Lineup Is Going to P*** People Off

RaymanFan2

I've never found a platform to play Meat Boy on that had a satisfactory controller, so I'll happily play it on Vita for the first time properly.

Also I don't really mind 'paltry' selections on PS Plus, but I do miss the days of Sony giving us Bioshock Infinite like two months after release.

And oh dear, this comment section looks like it has gone places...

Re: First Impressions: Ratchet & Clank PS4 Is a Pixar Movie Brought to Life

RaymanFan2

Ratchet and Clank 1 is in my top 5 games of all time, and about this one I'm skeptical.
The whole reason I still like the first over the others is that, while the first is pretty clunky in hindsight, the clunkiness gave the game the pace of a platformer rather than a shooter.
I'm imagining Into the Nexus' game feel applied to the first game and it makes me think some of the charm will be lost. The writing, at the very least, is guaranteed to feel more like a Future game than the PS2 games, which is why I'm not that interested in the movie. Ratchet was never a boy scout - in fact he was the opposite in the first game - but it looks like that's what they've made him for the movie.

Should be pretty though, and I'm sure I'll still enjoy it.

Re: Don't Hold Your Breath for a New PlayStation Handheld

RaymanFan2

@get2sammyb Yeah, but the DS was an outlier that only the PS2 has come close to matching.
It's like saying the PS3 was a failure because it didn't sell as many units as the Wii. The 3DS and PS3 are marketed as relatively hardcore systems whereas the DS and Wii were gaming's first and only successes at being all things to all people. A good 50% of all Wii owners only ever bought Wii Sports, and a sizeable chunk of DS owners only ever bought Brain Training and Professor Layton.

Re: Review: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)

RaymanFan2

@ShogunRok Speaking of subjective opinion - I'm a huge fan of MGS, usually hate fantasy RPGs, and think that Witcher 3 is better than MGSV. And I adored both.

So in a year where that opinion is possible despite all my biases, I think the best course is to stop comparing games and instead appreciate just how awesome 2015 has been and continues to be.

Re: Review: Mad Max (PS4)

RaymanFan2

It really does sound like Ubisoft: The Open World Game, in that it (and all of them) focus on giving 'content' without giving any thought to making that content actually interesting.

That said, I felt the same way about Shadow of Mordor, and I fully acknowledge that if you're going to be derivative, that's how you do it, because it was enjoyable, just over-familiar.

Re: Round Up: Mad Max PS4 Reviews Hit the Highway

RaymanFan2

@get2sammyb It sounds like it has all the problems Just Cause 2 did - that is, if you do what the game points you towards doing, it's often pretty 'Open-World-101,' as you put it. If you just screw around and see what you can do with the systems it gives you, you'll get much more out of it. JC3 is my most anticipated game of the rest of 2015.
That said, Mad Max looks like it has far less systems to screw around with than Just Cause because of the setting, so, with no driving force (pun COMPLETELY intended) other than the main objectives, it'll seem much blander.

So in that regard it seems like it'll be more comparable to GTAV in that Avalanche seems to have completely nailed the setting, if nothing else.

Re: Review: Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls (PS Vita)

RaymanFan2

While I enjoyed the Danganronpa games, something about them just wasn't as compelling as I would have liked (that is, as compelling as Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, 999 or the Kyle Hyde games).
The exception being Monokuma, who would actually have to be one of my favorite villains of all time. I feel like shooting a bunch of him all the time would only cheapen him.

Re: Feature: What Do You Mean You've Never Played... Transformers: War for Cybertron?

RaymanFan2

Fall is even better, especially for fanservice.
But Joey might want to have a look at PushSquare's review for Dark Spark, done by Ben.
It's pretty much on par with War and got a 3/10. The critical panning of that game is pretty much the only time I've ever gotten annoyed by the general consensus.
Movie tie-in games aren't going to get better if critics don't recognize the good ones, because then what's the point in putting the effort in?

Re: Review: Bloodborne (PlayStation 4)

RaymanFan2

My main problem with 'the From Software game' (for there is only one) is that checkpoints (or whatever you want to call them) are so few and far between. If I've proven I can beat enemies x, y and z, I shouldn't need to fight them again get to get another chance at big boss x. That's punishing, not difficult. The difficulty factor in that equation is only in the fact that the boss is clearly hard because it couldn't be beaten the first time.

Re: The Last of Us' Ellie Is Poised to Become One of the Most Famous Characters in Gaming

RaymanFan2

@BLPs True, but I think GLAAD are vastly over-exaggerating how much Ellie's sexuality is going to play into her becoming more popular with a possible sequel.
I mean, they'll never manage to please everybody because there's so many varying opinions on the subject, but Naughty Dog will definitely try their utmost to treat the subject with care.

If it ends up riling some people up, we can at least take comfort knowing that, unlike some developers who just pander to whichever group is easiest to defend, Naughty Dog only have the best intentions, even if they aren't executed to everyone's ideals simultaneously.

Re: The Last of Us' Ellie Is Poised to Become One of the Most Famous Characters in Gaming

RaymanFan2

@BLPs While I do agree with you to an extent, I do think you should play TLoU to truly make a judgement.

That said, I agree with you that, while it was probably done with the best intentions of being inclusive of gay gamers by Naughty Dog, it came off as a bit OH LOOK AT US WE'RE SO PORGERSIVE.

There's myriad opinions and even some gay people (these GLAAD people, obviously) may have preferred the more blatant approach ND took (I mean, a straight couple kissing wouldn't raise any eyebrows, so a lesbian couple shouldn't etc), but the way the scene was played out seemed a far-cry from the "Oh look she's gay whatever" approach BLPs is after (which is more Bill's thing).
It was set up in a way that makes it a spoiler to talk about it - it was inarguably the biggest shock moment of that DLC. ND had already made their statement on gay people with Bill, so it came across as 'oh we don't have any big story moment in this DLC, what do we do?'
Would it be a spoiler to say that Joel is straight? No? Then there shouldn't be a big palaver about Ellie being gay.

The fact that I've contradicted myself shows that there are too many opinions on the matter to encompass them all and just be accepting of everyone without having to add some apologetic postscript at the end.

sigh I should probably stop haha

Re: Review: Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings (PlayStation 4)

RaymanFan2

@ShogunRok The problem with the combat for me was that you could just cheese smoke bombs.
Yes, you could stealth, but it was almost always faster to just cheese smoke bombs to either fight everyone without taking damage or escape really easily.
I mean, obviously it's not quite what Ubi intended, but it's bad game design, not bad player discipline that I never stealthed. It's all about balance, and the smart player will always take the unintended path of least resistance over the intended path of greater resistance if a developer makes an oversight in the balance.

Re: Review: Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings (PlayStation 4)

RaymanFan2

@get2sammyb I'd be more hard-pressed to give it a rating, but I'd say:
"Know what you're getting into. You're getting what amounts to about another sixth of Unity's running time, with little differentiation. If that sounds like something you'd find enjoyment in given the [$x] price tag, go ahead, but if you didn't like Unity's base gameplay, there's absolutely nothing here for you."

Were I paying for it I'd expect it to be another hour longer, though. I suspect when they decided it would be free they just said "screw it, finish what's 90% done and scrap the rest, get it out the door in a month or we won't be paying you with that money we aren't making"
